I also notice that breathing in is like hard labor. I cannot breathe in fully since a very long time. I doubted whether it was hyperventilation syndrome but I think it is. I experience tighness in my chest and before heavy pains in the back of my head. I have taken effexor antidepressants but my doctor said these were activating antidepressants and certainly not for me so I withdrew from them. I hope this exercice will make the difference after years of struggling with pain. First I thought it was all about my nervous system, due to trauma. Of course all is connected.

Hi Fred. I am not Janet. But. Please see if on the breath in you can try and breathe as if air enters through your navel..it's a very quiet breath in and the breath out is "louder" so to speak. Although both are quiet. If you by any chance only breath in to the upper part or f ex raise your shoulders you increase adrenaline. If this is still painful try to calm yourself with 4-7-8 breathing before doing this one. Never use coffee or any stimulants before this breathing. I hope this helps :)

I've heard that if we measure the control pause 3 minutes after the end of these reduced breathing sets, that it should be slightly higher than at the beginning of the set. But what about the control pauses during the middle of the set - should we expect these to be longer/shorter/same as at the start/just before the set? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Janet, I notice that making the size of my breaths smaller increases air hunger (as expected because of an increase in co2 levels). But if I make the breaths super tiny (keeping the breathing rate the same), then the hunger drops off a bit. I'm just wondering if you notice the same thing and if there is an explanation for this. It's almost as though air hunger isn't just linked to minute ventilation rate but also the size of each breath. Does that make sense?

Hi, Air hunger is probably more related to how relaxed your diaphragm is than CO2 concentrations, so if tiny breaths work for you that's okay ( I usually call this 'sipping the air'. Other people find a longer slower slightly bigger breath works for them. These are both training exercises - slow breathing is easier to master for some and 'sipping the air' works with others. By the time you've 'trained up' and you're an 'expert' you can use either comfortably.

Honestly I have been surprised by this. I didn’t know what reverse breathing was and I thought my stomach moved when I breath so it doesn’t apply to me. I realised that I have slipped into dysfunctional breathing. I have been caught out by it. About 3 years ago I started to get anxious when I had to leave the house. It manifests in needing the toilet, then worrying about needing the toilet. I don’t feel anxious (I thought, am I going mad) but my vagus nerve is going into sympathetic mode like a runaway train. So if I don’t address it will continue to control my world, my life. I didn’t understand what you meant Janet when you said see if you notice any difference in your mood. I woke up this morning to do my CP and that’s the first thing I noticed. I felt good! It really surprised me because, I’m a happy person but this was different ‘subtle’. Thank you for you’re help. OUt of all the breathing excercises I have tried, the Butyeko method has proved to have the most success for me. One thing to note, is that I know you say to relax but my stomach finds that really difficult. It goes into a sort of contraction mode on its own during the feeling of air hunger. I cannot seem help that, despite trying to relax. My control pause varies. In the mornings it's around 27 but in the evenings it can really range from anywhere between 15-30. I'm an active person. Nykoooo1 - STOP! 3 breaths per minute is not healthy or helpful. You may need to refocus on how relaxed your diaphragm is during a daily 6 breaths a minute... better still work slowly and carefully to bring up your Bolt score. Having a low Bolt score probably indicates that you there are still some muscles which are tight preventing you from holding your breath. If you haven't seen them perhaps try these 3 videos .1. The Extended Pause 2. Walking with good breathing and 3.The Eye-lift reflex

Thank you for the videos. I have a question. Is this supposed to feel uncomfortable at all, or is it supposed to be relaxing, I feel like if I push myself more I can make it uncomfortable, but I’m not sure if that is the point or not. Want to make sure I’m doing it right

A little uncomfortable Justin, you are trying to hold a feeling of moderate air hunger between breaths. It requires concentration too!
