I can't wait for the build video. I've been looking for a way to replace the head unit in my truck with a Pi for a while now, but FM tuning has been what's kept me from doing it.
YESSS! NOVA I'm so glad u went with oap and I hope my comments helped encourage it my biggest reason I'm glad ur on board is because your just a pure genius when it comes to all this tech
Man, that dashboard is far way better than the crappy ridiculous out-dated Android-based one i had in my Nissan JUKE lol Looking forward to the build my brother
I believe I have worked out a way to get a standard reverse camera that used composite video for the standard app built in reverse cam menu via easycap capture card if interested I'll fill you in on my results of my tests later this week.
My car I put a Android Auto kit , I am happy with it but, If I get a beater, I might go down this route. A nice head unit is $400+ seems like we can do this for less with a possible better experience. Never knew you could "build your own car stereo" very cool
what if you have 3 sets of RCA's going to an aftermarket amp. I have a set for the sub a set for the front speakers and a set for the rear. I dont use any speaker wires unless its after the amp to the speaker.
I run 'AGAMA Car Launcher' on an old Huawei Mediapad tablet ... once the right Apps are installed it does what all other dashboards can do ... if not more ... job done ...
I have several questions. Can this software be flashed into a regular radio unit? Also does the stations get saved to the unit? Can i customize the ui with a skin?
The biggest issue I had is triggering shutdown in a safe fashion when the ignition is turned off. If you just pull power from the pi, you will corrupt the storage. Also, there is no battery to maintain the clock on the pi so the datetime is off on boot. I would like to see how you work through these issues. Thank you!
Great timing, I was about to start on something similar. I am jumping ahead a bit, but did you figure out how to get the backup camera input? Most camera built for this task have an analog output. My work around is a analog to USB, but that will be slower than if I had a connection straight to the CSI port... Keep up the good work!!
So I got interested when you first talked about this a few years ago. Now I am waiting for the build so I can start. Should be a great build. When I tried it a while back the Crankshaft was very buggy and some functionality was horrible.
I'm curious to see if there is any form of suspend/resume for the Pi So that it would be instant on instead of booting everytime... or at least investigate if boot time can be improved!
I'm curious about two things. How will that screen handle bright light from the sun? What kind of heat can the screen and raspberry pi take before they won't operate. Where I live it can get up to 140°F in the car when it's sitting in the sun.
How easy would it be to control volume with a trim pot? I love this, but I like having a few buttons too. Can you wire this to your dimmer wire for the display?
Dr Don - is it possible to have a second speaker plugged into the audio jack that's just used to generate feedback clicks/beeps for interface use (so to validate that you hit a button)? The reason I ask - it'd be much better to have that physically from the unit and "local" to the screen than coming over the main audio.
Does it use a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter? I use one in my car, but it stays powered up when my car is off. I worry about it slowly draining my battery. A USB adapter could be controlled by the Pi.
Does the hardware/software support USB DAC instead of an external sound card? Currently using my phone as my source, connected to an USB DAC, out to my amp.
Any suggestions on using a pre existing amp with this screen? I currently have an alpin head unit and a amp that sits behind it in the dash and wouldn't want to not use it anymore.
I loved OAP but found the PI4 to be too slow for my liking, now I have a beelink mini gaming pc running nobara because thats what happens to me with these types of projects
@@NovaspiritTech hey Don was wondering how I can contact you directly I wanted to run a few things by you to see if you might want to use them for your own personal set up and to see if the way I'm writing this script is correct anyways thanks I hope my comment on your original open auto video help you make the switch to pro lol I like to think that considering your thousands of followers haha anyways hope to hear from you Don and thanks for your time
I think it's pretty crappy that DB tech is getting more recognition than you for the open auto pro setup, when you did it first, did it better and have a better quality video.
Finally another project (other than pihole) that worth the use of a pi

use nrsc5 for hd digital radio that most radio station broadcast. crystal clear

So keen for this project, watching the channel intently waiting for the full build video
Thanks so much for the video and I'm really looking forward to seeing how you build this out. I jumped on that AMP and got the last one Amazon had.
wow it's already sold out?
Going to be following the build! Been wanting to do a set up like this for a while.
cant wait for the build video!

I thought you were going to go with open Auto pro it just has so many more features than crankshaft
This thing is sweet! Nice Video thank you.
Glad you made the decision to go with blue wave studio.

can't wait for more.
You think I could use something like this to make a tesla-esque vertical screen in my 350z?? Hardest part would be sourcing the trim+screen.
You would prob use 10inch screen and custom 3d printed trim
I'm working on a similar project for my car, on the radio i think that i will use a rtl sdr module usb connected to raspberry pi4 for fm and dab radio
I have several questions. Can this software be flashed into a regular radio unit? Also does the stations get saved to the unit? Can i customize the ui with a skin?
the website is down ? i cant buy

Yup I resolved all that with my method

Is carlink similar to this? My wife wants Netflix inside the Car on My widescreen Kia MMI but carlink cost too much
Will this run on anything other than a raspberry pi? With the shortages it would be great to use something else.
How about Automotive Grade Linux (AGL)? Nobody has done a video on how to get it running and connect to the car
I'm curious to see if there is any form of suspend/resume for the Pi
So that it would be instant on instead of booting everytime... or at least investigate if boot time can be improved!
Hey, does it work in vertical mode? I'd like to mount it like in Tesla cars 🤓
I noticed that "Hack 'til it Hertz" is back. Mistake, or on purpose?
trying to see if it will effect my views again.... so far i think it's okay

honestly i'm not sure yet but when i get to that point ti will talk about it
@@NovaspiritTech Great, thanks!
Following! Very interested in seeing what you use for the case .. I just bought a carpihat for my wiring..
I'd love to do this in my Forester. I'm getting more and more dissatisfied with my Pioneer head unit.
Thanks great video. Do you know if it supports digital radio or just FM?
Does openauto pro support gpio touchscreens? I'm thinking of doing this for my motorcycle as a heads-up unit.
i blieve so but not right out of the box. cause each model has its own driveers
Funny that I want to create a Pi Car radio and Don makes a video about it 🤣🤣
Also, will the OBD also work over bluetooth?
yes
Yes it will so does android Auto
How easy would it be to control volume with a trim pot? I love this, but I like having a few buttons too. Can you wire this to your dimmer wire for the display?
Can you share the part number, model number or a link to the USB sound card you are using?
How about adding a SDR to it I am looking at it for getting Fire Dept calls , plus openauto

Cool! It would be neat to use an RTL-SDR dongle to get CB, FRS, NOAA, and GMRS radio.
I just picked one up. Didnt get a chance to test it yet
@@NovaspiritTech Nice! Please make a vid! I'm hoping to tie everything together with home assistant for a truck camper but I haven't even started yet.
Wondering if it can be used in portrait mode?
CarPlay is something you have in mind to test? thanks, following this project.!
does openauto pro or crankshaft allow you to use your phones' gps for maps?
How to blow up your electric in your car Haha - Love yr channel Novaspirit!
Hey Don, nice & cool car solution based on RasPI... I'm also working on it nowadays. We can keep in touch about that.
Does it use a Bluetooth OBD2 adapter? I use one in my car, but it stays powered up when my car is off. I worry about it slowly draining my battery. A USB adapter could be controlled by the Pi.
i have both, usb obd2 and bluetooth. i'm going to try both to see which one is best

sorry, due to my condition, i have sold the car recently

Is there support for HD Radio in Well.io? The NYC has a few HD radio stations
Not too sure about that but I'm almost done 3d printing the bezel and housing
@@NovaspiritTech I hope you used ABS/ ASA or at least PETG because PLA is going to deform in a car environment on hot days
What are you going to use for turning the pi on/off? Mausberry? that seems to be the main name in the game for that.
I made my own
@@NovaspiritTech you gonna show how? Does it power on with the accessory panel and clean power down?

it should, i don't see why not

Is there any way to add something so a sims card could be added to the system and it have it's own service instead of doing Hotspot?
Late but I'm pretty sure there are sim card modules. Use another tutorial but you basically add the sim in the raspberry pi network config file
Who else heard the 'oof' at 3:35?
Yea haha I put headphones on and heard it to
Anyone messed about with ODBC on Fiat 500?
I didn't see any mention of GPS.
Android auto is the gps
Android head unit with Agama launcher waay cooler looking and much more slick!
I live in Tejas, I worry about the heat killing my pi.
Awesome!
Mostly interested for running CarPlay 😏

Try Android Automotive. Including automotive car UI.
It is not ready to be used in a moving car yet. Made by a student in a basement -) imho Thanks that shared
30 seconds? Jesus that’s slow
check openDsh on github
I was going to suggest this too, I haven't gone too deep in that one yet. Looks great though. Open-source is always sweet!
