One thing not mentioned is that the CR-V Hybrid doesn't come with or have space for a spare tire, while the CX-50 and the RAV4 come with a spare tire
CRV hybrid not having a spare tire isn’t a deal breaker to some like me. I’ve owned 4 diff vehicles in the last 22yrs and have NEVER used the spare tire!

I owned cx-50 meridian edition and rav4 xle in terms of gas mileage cx50 not the best choice especially the turbo trim but in terms of fun drive, rugged looks,fancy & decent looks i prefer the cx-50.I drove From ND to Texas then CA back to ND wow amazing performance no complaints. Highly recommended Mazda cx50.

I would wait for the Mazda CX-50 hybrid... I think Mazda makes a better-looking, more luxurious interior, more reliable, and more fun to drive auto... if they come with a spirited hybrid then the added fuel economy will just be icing on the cake... excellent comparison between the autos.
as long as they get rid of those stupid large wheels, that has no place on an SUV marketed towards adventure
@@LoveLikeaHurricane Yeah, stop forcing the 20" wheels on us when we get the turbo! It doesn't make sense.
Another big reason Mazda is much better here is the control knob for infotainment system ... It takes few months to get intuitive and once you do it is second nature and super logical and safer way to control infotainment.
So please don't bash something you did not give yourself time to get intuitive with ....I did and it is a huge reason why I would buy it .
Overall good summary of the three.
CX50 hybrid comes very soon if you really want it... for some reason .
Gas prices are dropping again and hybrid makes so much less sense .
I agreed I have a cx5, the controls are perfect no reaching over love it.

Last November (2022), I was comparing these three SUVs. The Mazda is definitely the best driver's car of the three, but I ended up purchasing the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid for the reasons so very well presented in this video.
Performance and style vs space and comfort. The CX-50 is tempting but I have to live with it. Throw in the hybrid and the choice is easier. You chose the RAV4 for which I thank you, but I would go with the CRV for space and comfort once more. I guess I'm at that stage in life. Thank you for another excellent presentation.
Im looking at these models also. I like that the Mazda is using a 6-speed transmission over a CVT. I also like that Mazda has a non turbo option. I appreciate the simple engineering. I Interpret the simple engineering as reliability. It doesn’t hurt I enjoy the interior design over the other 2.
I have a new CX30..........6 gears is plenty unless You're going racing........same thing for the basic non-turbo.......I have found that My CX30,"basic" has double the torque at 1500 rpm's as My 2.5 forrester........That forrester had to really rev to pull a hill..............My CX30 is more like a diesel...only quieter................Paul

I LOVE the interior color of the Mazda. It looks a lot like the Brown leather interior on my Forester Touring.
I bought the Premium CX50 day after Thanksgiving. This is a very spirited semi-sport oriented suv. Mine does have the turbocharger. I really like the upscale leather and soft touch appointments. The front seats are very adjustable for driver/passenger comfort. Because the cx50 is longer than the cx5 the back seats have a bit more legroom. The steering is on the heavy side but direct inputs from the driver puts it where you want it to go, no sloppiness here. Sound system is quite nice. I think this car looks better than most suvs. Yeah, right now the gas mileage is on the low side but I'm probably using that turbo quite a bit!! Great car so far!
I prefer heavy steering that you get in Mazdas versus others. Nothing wrong with a bit of an arm workout!

@@c.f.g.2837 it was funny, because the first CX50 I drove was a non-turbo, then I drove a turbo CX 50 then I drove another non-turbo CX 50 and then I even drove a turbo CX 5! I just kept feeling like the non-turbo was a quieter engine and felt a little less vibration. Plus it helped me keep the price under a certain amount😁

Your review was spot on! It’s exactly what we felt! We saw your video AFTER we test drove the cars and actually bought a car. My son bought the Honda AWD ( not the hybrid). It was the extra cargo space that tipped the scale. He mourned not picking the Mazda. We both felt the RAV felt…..kind of cheap in the cabin. I’m buying a car for myself in the spring. I will likely pick the Mazda.

@Heidi K keep in mind the largest cost to vehicle ownership is depreciation. And in that regard, the cr-v will hold it's value much better than the mazda.

Off topic here but I don't think the CX 50 should be compares with the Rav4 and CRV. The CX 50 is made to go up against the Subaru Outback. Mazda already has the CX 5 to go up against the Rav4 and CRV
I recently did this similar comparison shopping for my mother-in-law. We did not want the base model but the cheapest leather model. The Mazda was nearly 3000 less than the other 2 and they had a fair amount of them in stock where as Toyota was a 3-month wait for Rav4 and no leather CR-V in the area. Plus dealers are still adding on 1500 for dealer fees where as Mazda was able to remove that in our scenario.
Andrew I purchased the CX-50 and am quite pleased with the vehicle. I looked at the Honda and considered it a "boring" vehicle although it is known for reliability; but so is Mazda and Toyota. I have no regrets.
The RAV4 supposedly has better reliability according to J.D. Power. They rank them in this order: Toyota, Mazda, Honda.

I've owned CR-Vs for years. Great reliable vehicles. I currently have a 2019 CR-V and I would love to upgrade to a hybrid version. However with chip shortages, dealer shortages and mark ups, getting a hybrid for a decent price is almost impossible.
I'd look within 100 miles of your location tbh. I found a dealer 60 miles away, offering below MSRP for them. Not buying right now, but they exist

All I can say is Honda CRV hybrid is atleast available.. I checked at multiple dealership in Illinois and Toyota Rav4 hybrid wil cost 45K as all toyoa dealerships are trying to make money.. So I chose honda CRV hybrid 2023

Agree, I would definitely go with the Toyota Rav4 but I do like more the interior luxury of Mazda cx50. Toyota definitely need to improve design and material interior quality.

IF possible, avoid turbos and CVTs, but also get what is comfortable and affordable.
Good job. Suggestion: compile the quantitative statistics (HP, mileage, etc.), and also the qualitative attributes, for each model into a table.
I recently purchased a 2023 Mazda CX 50 Preferred Plus and I simply love it. I traded my 2021 Subaru Legacy Limited XT for the Mazda because I was tired of having to use sub menus to even change choices on the climate system. I, also, did not like the CVT transmission and the persistent "beeping" of the lane departure warning , the annoying driver alert system, and the stupid "on/off start" system which could only be disabled for one drive. I love the Mazda's knob and button climate system controls, the excellent ride, the and driving experience. I have gotten used to the infotainment system, which I still think is no more complicated than the Subaru's with all its sub menus with which one has to deal..

For me personally would be RAV4 hybrid.
I would go with Mazda because this 'hybrid savings' is only theoretical. Each CRV or RAV 4 requires good 2k market adjustment ,whereas Mazda offers 2k off their MSRP (negotiating turbo now) so it's 4k difference + tax , additionally Mazda offers 0.9% over 36 months vs Toyota and Honda offering 4% at best which equals 1800 usd extra cost at 35k car with 0 down payment over 36 months for Toyota and Honda, I was planning to buy a hybrid but it's just not worth it.
While fuel economy is definitely important, both RAV4 hybrid and CRV hybrid still have dealer markup on them (at least for the 5-6 dealers I reached out last week), effectively taking away the monetary benefit of higher mpg.

I am talking about US only, Pacific Northwest specifically. For CRV Hybrid, I was asked $6K in dealer markup/additions for Sport Touring trim and for $5K markup for RAV4 Hybrid Limited. This was last week.

I really do not understand why we spend 4 thousand dollars more than a single car for a hybrid car to save 4 thousand dollars in gas in 4 years😂 If we go 20000 kilometres year Therefore, if a normal car with fuel of 100/10 liters per kilometer with a tank capacity of 60 liters and an average price per liter of 1.5 $ CAD we spend about 3000 dollars a year on gasoline And for a hybrid car with the same size of gasoline tank, you pay about $2,000 for gasoline every year So it's around $1,000 a year, but remember that you paid the difference initially for seven years.😂😂😂
Great review Shari, personally I would buy the RAV4 if I am going to keep vehicle more than 10 years. CX-50 is best up to 10 years of ownership. The CRV is a strictly a lease option. Hondas are not what they used to be, reliability has been suffering as complexity is high on Honda line up. Turbos and GDI are Hondas problems.
What bout Acura Rdx compare to crv? Lease as well?
@@user-tb4do1oq3k it’s the same garbage. One has the Accord engine and the other Civic engine. Acura should be abolished in North America if Honda is serious about rebuilding the brand with absolute reliability.
Look, Mazda knows what this game is all about when you are struggling. They focused on building a reasonably reliable platform of a 2.5 litre engine and sticking it into their entire line up.
These guys are serious and I think partly because Toyota own part of Mazda.

I would consider the crv hybrid so it has more combined power and does not use the turbo engine.
for real tiny 1.5L turbo charged engine and a CVT!!!! Honda is messing up big time
I think I might wait for the 2024 CR-V Hybrid and hope it adds some more options (360 camera, HUD) and works out any potential issues that a refreshed model might have.

Have a 2011 Mazda CX-7 with 270K miles and bought it brand new. No issues and love it. However, these new models from Mazda decrease the leg room since that center console has increased over the years. A simple 4 hrs drive to Las Vegas becomes a challenge with that reduced leg room. Test drove the CX-90 and it has the same issue. Good vehicles but not for me at this time. My Ford F-150 with the front bench offers me all the leg room I need for long drives.
Love my Rav4 hybrid! You can’t go wrong with Toyota reliability.
Mazda is also Japanese reliability. Toyota actually hires Mazda for certain parts of their engine technology
Toyota also gets its engine tech from Yamaha for many of its cars.
Toyotas low end cars, like the Rav, do not get their renowned reliability like the 4Runner, LC, Prado, and Lexus

I own a cx-50. I hear a lot of reviews about the poor mpg. My buddy has a 2022 rav 4. After about three months we have the same average mpg. We both do basically the same driving during the week with commute and all.

This is true, I own the cx50 and dad owns the rav 4 both of us get around 25mpg.
Yeah some manufacturers over estimate and some underestimate.
Our Forester is averaging just under 30 mpg combined. Many of the miles are going over 80 mph. We love our Subie!

Have u heard about Mazda 2.5T oil consumption problem? Don't go for any maker/model w/ turbo.
You need a hybrid in a RAV4 not only for the fuel economy but a bit more refinement when accelerating. Also, good luck finding one at MSRP. For this reason I think Mazda is a clear winner.

My Toyota Matrix rusted out BEYOND REPAIR, before it hit garage kept, 50,000 1 owner miles.

I put Michelin Cross Climate tires on my 19?Forester Touring. They’re Awesome on all road conditions, (snow, ice, wet, dry ), and muddy off roads. It’s the perfect tire for our year round use.
For more serious off road, we take our 4X4 pickup
Cross Climates are excellent tires, but further up north dedicated winter tires make a huge difference. Michelin X-Ice tires are unstoppable in winter weather.

Mazda is the winner when comes in design and power, in my opinion CRV is the most balanced in terms of design and pricing, the ugliest is Rav4
Hi guys anyone has any inputs regarding oil comsumption on honda crv? rav4 or cx5 with higher mileage?
i have a 2020 toyota rav4 with the trd off road package and that package i can tow 3500 lbs cause of heavier duty cooling.
Love Mazda’s driving dynamics, but I hate the fact that they went with a torsion-beam rear axle for the CX-50 and as a result the ride is rather firm and one can easily loose traction during those mid-corner bumps.
Anyway, keep up the great work Shari!
Except Mazda's torsion beam design & overall engineering design/driving dynamics is still yielding better results than most other companies using more sophisticated suspensions on their vehicles.

Personally, the trade-off of a better looking vehicle, more standard accessories with an interior bordering on luxury, and a much more spirited vehicle to drive for poorer fuel economy is well worth it to me. Mazda for the win! But I respect that for many, fuel economy is their #1 priority, and just need a reliable Point A to Point B vehicle which the Rav particularly delivers. The CRV is simply overpriced for what you get.

@@paulholterhaus7084 I noticed when you go on their build site there’s several model trims that aren’t even available it says it right underneath that particular model. So I would try to find like a preferred plus trim level. It’s a shame that the premium trim level on the non-turbo is not available either. I have a feeling next year Mazda is going to pair down the amount of trim levels to choose from. There’s really too many of them

Mazda CX 50 for me 😍
I really wanted to like the RAV4, but it's just so cheap looking inside, and the exterior is def a love it or hate it style. I'll pay more for the much more polished interior of the CR-V Touring Hybrid, with physical knobs and buttons (vs the all touch setup of my previous first gen HR-V) and far superior drive vs the 1.5T ICE, with a couple of features that I can live without (Pano roof, 360 degree camera). Seriously considered the Venza, but not willing to wait 8-10 months for delivery.
It's a real shame that Toyota has cut corners on its interior materials, because the Rav4 is a terrific vehicle.
Ya…these review need to throw the Forester into the mix because it fits this category and is a legit choice for buyers looking for a vehicle in this class.

We have both 2021 CRV and 2021RAV4 Base models since 1.5 years. I would buy Toyota in future over any other brand. This review felt more like biased where you got to drive only one vehicle. I will stay away from the vehicle that is costly to buy and cheap to sell over time. Only downside i found with Rav4 over CRv was only space. In all other domain Rav4 is clear winner.
We will get CX-60 in Australia and also come with Hybrid option. Lucky! I haven't decide yet CRV or CX60....

You made a mistake. You said the CX-50 is based on the Mazda CX-5 platform. This isn't so. It is based on the same transverse, front-wheel-drive platform as the fourth-generation Mazda3 and CX-30.

In Feb. 2022, Consumer Reports rated the Mazda the #1 most reliable brand.
Non turbo mazda engines are very comparable to toyotas in terms of reliability. They're very refined and coupled with a very solid transmission.

I've decided I'll be getting a rav4. Suits my preferences the best with having a little more of a rugged look. Mazda looks nice but don't think can beat the long term reliability toyota has, and my exes new husband bought her a Honda CR- V so definitely not taking that route! Lol

I think you need to do a lil more research about Toyota, Toyota reability is not what use to be these new Toyotas are garbage and low quality, my wife's uncle 2018 Rav-4 broke down last year with only 33k on it, ecu took a crap. Mazda in the other hand are better built, hight quality and better reability than Toyota.

I think the Rav 4 looks ugly though it’s dependent on the trim, but I like the CRV (best looking) and CX50 for looks. I’m thinking about purchasing a new car next year and it will be between the new Outlander PHEV and Honda CRV (when it releases in New Zealand).
RAV4 looks the best. I work in Honda and I think it looks alright, kinda conservative.

Rumors have it that Mazda is coming out with a Hybrid soon and it could possibly use the same engine that's in the Rav 4. The CX-50 and Rav 4 are both produce out of a Toyota Plant in AL.
A similar hybrid system used in the rav4 I believe. But mazda is mating it to their own 2.5 skyactiv engine.
@@know916bound That would be even better Matt! The Mazda Skyactive 2.5 engine is bulletproof. I'm a car guy and we have 4 Mazda's in the family. Two of them have the Skyactive engines in them and both have way over 100K miles with no issues whatsoever. Change the oil, belts, and spark plugs eventually and drive them 300K miles. The newer Mazda designs and interiors are so much nicer vs. the competition, and they handle much better as well. I know the RAV4 and CRV would both be pretty reliable, but the driving experience and the cheap interiors are not on par with the Mazda's.
I prefer the mazda cx50,for me the looks and reliability but I understand 👍 what cr v brings to the table , actually a tough 🤔 call overall.
To me a CRV screams I'm old and retired, look out.
In Canada, you may wait 6-12 months for Toyota RAV4 Hybrid so dealer says but can get Honda CRV gasoline or hybrid in 2 months , Mazda end of summer maybe…tough choice, $50,000 for hybrid CRV with their reliable 2.0l engine??

That's a beast.
In my life time, my wife and I owned 3 Hondas, 3 Toyotas, 2 BMW, 4 MBZ, 1 Mazda, 1 GM, 1 Ford, 1 Nissan. Let me just say that our next cars will either be a Prius Prime or Tesla 3. And when I have to replace my Mazda CX-9 (15 years old now - the only car I kept that long), Rav4 Hybrid is the one.
Why would you trust Tesla without any experience with the brand
@@stachowi my sister got her S when it first came out. Five of my cousins and 7 of my friends all got their Tesla for more than a few years. They are 90+% happy. So 4 months ago, we also got our Tesla when they dropped the price. And yes, we are happy with Tesla, especially whenever we drive by a gas station with $5 a gallon price tag.
I had rav 4 for a short period as a rental. I supposed it was base model but, man, this was a sorry looking interior and one noisy cabin at high speed. It sounded like a tin can, when driving over gravel you could hear stones hitting the floor pan.
Don’t know how long ago that was but I don’t find my 2022 noisy at high speeds. Can’t speak to gravel roads! But the underside of Ravs are totally enclosed with hard plastic panels.
I've had a rav4 for a year and a half. I am currently waiting on a Sportage hybrid to replace my rav4. I cannot stand the noisy ride of this vehicle. I pulled out all the seats and put dynamat in to help. While it did reduce some noise, the wind noise is still incredibly intrusive. It sounds like the car has a window cracked and has been wrecked before and you are driving with crumpled panel openings. I complained about it to the guy who sold me the car, he rode in it and said it sounds like all the others do.
I cannot recommend the rav4 for that reason alone. I usually buy a car and use it for 6 years, then trade up. But I am running away from this one because of the terrible NVH. Toyota has been riding on the reliability train for too long and they think that makes up for them ignoring everything else (NVH, and infotainment). That worked great when new cars were $20k, but not now that they are charging $40k and other MFG are cheaper, just as reliable, and a better "Get what you pay for" standpoint.

We had a rental Rav 4 and found it clunky, especially when the engine cylinders shut down in eco mode…startled me at first. Would not buy.
I would get a top of the line Venza for value and features.

The top of the line Venza was on my radar but it was going to be about five or 6000 more than my Mazda CX 50, Plus I don’t know how long of a wait there would’ve been to get one!
In Feb. 2022, Consumer Reports rated Mazda as the #1 most reliable brand.
They all have pros and cons. Why Honda don’t have a better engine and a better price, it’ll be the one to pick. Just put the 2,0 in the crv at reasonable price and you have the best of both world.
Thanks for your input on the Mazda CR-50. I was wondering about it. Hopefully it will have a hybrid version soon. Fuel economy is a big factor. No question that the Rav 4 and the Honda CRV are the best vehicles.
I’m hearing that insurance is quite a bit higher for the CRV due to it having one of the highest theft rates in the US. Insurance rates probably should be compared before choosing.
Yes they should. I wish I could factor insurance rates into these reviews, but there are way too many variables that go into calculating rates. Location, driving experience, driving record, etc.

Toyota and Mazda worked together to design the modern Mazda so either Toyota or Mazda are reliable. But this is my 2021 knowledge binge I did so take it with a grain of salt

i actually prefer the rotary knob to the touch screen for the infortainment, its undeniably the better option than leaning over to touch the screen, can we all just stop acting like its 2008 and the iphone just came out? its ok, you can survive without touching a touch screen.
I purchased the Rav4 Hybrid due to Toyota’s reliability reputation, the fact that I traded my 2020 Toyota Highlander which was super, and the fact that Toyota was first in the hybrid technology and have perfected it every since. I am getting 40MPG average. I only tow my bike in my bike rack so towing doesn’t make a difference to me. All of the materials in the Rav4 and other Toyota cars are made to last versus being the best looking, etc.

I ask you to do a little more research. I have been looking at CR-V vs Rav4 for 6 months now and was about ready to buy a CR-V when I found all sorts of information regarding "Oil Dilution" where gas goes into the oil. This has been a huge issue for Honda on 4 cyl engines in the CR-V, Accord and Civic. There is even a class action law suit against Honda as they have refused to address the issue or correct it. I would suggest no one even consider a Honda 4 cyl engine until proper corrective action occurs.

Any make/model/trim using a belt/chain design CVT or turbo engine is likely-problematic crap (IMO) that I am not interested in purchasing. That sums it up for me.
2025 Mazda CX-50 is coming out with (in partnership with Toyota) the Rav 4 Hybrid powertrain making the CX-50 the best option overall

CRV uses Turbo and CVT. Mazda doesn’t. Scotty K advises against both of of those systems for reliability.
@@davidld10 I would avoid CX5 because it has cylinder deactivation which may cause carbon buildup. I would wait for a few years and get a CRV Hybrid. Generally new vehicles won’t last long cause of electronics

@@chongminwang It is true for 2018 and newer for naturally aspirated engines. The turbocharged engines don’t have it.
Rav4 by miles
I was thinking about the Mazda so I’ve been watching a lot of vids about it. But the stitching in the middle of the seat is the deal breaker for me. So many youtubers have complained about that. If it’s that obvious, I wouldn’t want a wedgie each time I drive.
Go drive a CX-5 instead. No stitching in the middle of the seat and a great reliable car, just a little smaller.
My RAV 4 Adventure edition tows 3500lbs.
