  • Welcome to GruncleWorx! The channel that explores Everyday Gear for the Everyday Guy!
    Today we have a Timex Expedition Scout Solar watch Review in Black with Genuine Leather strap.
    The watch is 'light' (solar) powered and utilizes any source of light to help charge its battery, including artificial light i.e. light bulb. It can store enough energy to keep working for 4 months just in case you live under a rock! ;o)
    An excellent watch that offers great aesthetics and functionality at a bargain basement price with the added bonus of never having to change the batteries!
    Perfect for off grid or EDC / Bug out settings. No nonsense, easy to read, class looking and well built.

    Just got this watch and opened it right away. It has a very solid feel to it and the leather strap seems well done. I have owned solar watches in the past and love them. I'm done with gadgets and just need a watch that is easy to glance and read. Very clean design.

      @@GruncleWorx is the watch quiet? I have a normal timed expedition and you can hear the ticking quite loud.

    I have 1. 1 second lost in 4 months. It never dies. No batteries needed. It is ship chronograph accurate. I put mine on a Bond NATO strap. I own many high dollar watches. But when I need a watch that is a standard in time keeping,I pick up this one.

    I've had this watch for over a year now, and in the smartwatch age I honestly don't wear it too much anymore. I still love to grab it when I just want a watch on my wrist to tell time, and it's been faithfully ticking away on my nightstand without losing charge or time. Everyone should have something like this as either a backup or if they're just looking for an inexpensive watch that requires no thought to batteries or mechanical movements. Mine seems perfectly happy sitting near my bedside lamp or catching a bit of sun during the day. Under 60 US dollars as of this writing...just grab one.

    Thanks so much for putting the solar watch next to the expedition chronograph.I almost bought the solar one online (on sale for less than $40) .I have the other one and I love it. However the small size of the solar watch is a DEAL BREAKER ( I knew it was smaller but not so noticeable) You saved me some $$$ .Better to buy a watch I really like .Keep the good work !

      @@GruncleWorx Too bad this happened to you.I might as well pass on all solar watches (not to mention that I learned to change regular batteries myself) Solar watches are not 100% solar because they still use a battery that needs to be replaced ( and it's usually expensive).Regular batteries from most Timex watches last a long time.And Casio 10 year batteries are even better (some even last way longer ) Keep the good work !

    Great review. I'd like to know how loudly it ticks. So many Timex's tick loudly it is definitely an important factor for me. Thank you.

    • @OnTheRocks71
      @OnTheRocks71 2 года назад +2

      In a completely silent room, I can just barely hear mine ticking away from about 2 feet away if I make an effort to listen for it. I don't really consider it distracting personally. Any ambient noise drowns it out.

    I have an Indiglo Expedition and can tell you that using that feature drains the CR2016 battery rather quickly. Although l like the look of the Indiglo, to have luminated hands and digits is desirable in my opinion.

    Great Video! After not owning a watch in 20+ years I started my research into what watch to buy. I feel about watches the way I feel about Sunglasses as I would prefer to buy and own the very best at any price but as soon as I do I would loose them... So I try and find the best I can find that will function great, look good and will not upset me if I loose them.
    After a few weeks of research I decided on the TIMEX Expedition version with the Indiglo as I have always wanted one from the 90's and never purchased one but ran across the TIMEX Solar versions and got me thinking. Looks like the norm for a battery watch that's not solar is about 2 years, perhaps more but 2 years on a battery. Now if I use the indiglo lots just how long would that 2 year rated battery last me?
    Enter the SOLAR Timex. I was having a hard time deciding if I could live without indiglo but this video truly helped me as I think I will be able to see the hands better on this solar non indigo version so time will tell as my new watch ( same watch with the tan leather strap ) will arrive in a few days.
    The idea of a good looking inexpensive watch that I won't need to find a shop to replace a battery any time soon if ever, looks this good is a win! After lots of research and thought this was my choice of watch! Thanks for the video as it helped me decide...

    Very good review. I just bought the Expedition North 41mm solar in gunmetal green. I don't ( and still can't) find the model you are reviewing. I prefer the color and better contrast between the hands and the watch face in this scout at 40mm, unless you erred and its the 36mm. If I could find yours I'd return mine.

    So, how solar works? How does it receive Solar power?

    • @GruncleWorx
      @GruncleWorx  3 года назад

      The watch face absorbs the light and charges up the internal battery. I am having some issues with mine so I am going to send it back under warranty for repair.

    Is the watch PVD coated? Does the coating hold up to bumps and scrapes?

    • @GruncleWorx

      Thats a good question, not sure on the actual finish but it has held up well to use, the only bad part is that the solar mechanism is no longer working so its been sent back for repair!

      That is a great question! Mental note taken for the next video! ;o) It's not loud at all, I have to place it by my ear to hear it and its a light 'tinny' sound as opposed to a really strong audible 'tick'. Hope that helps.
