I always respected Ace's solos; sometimes you don't have to be flashy or a speed demon to sound good. Even Ace admits himself that he is by no means a shredder...it doesn't mean that simple solos (compared to a Randy Rhoads, etc.) are lame. Great lesson and thanks for posting it !!!
He doesn't have to admit he is not a shredder. We all know it. Shred really didn't even start until Eddie Van Halen and beyond. Ace kind of uses a lot of commonplace licks used by a lot of guitarists of the time in his own way.
I called Aces sound blue collar garage band on steroids. He created his own style and didn't try to sound like Eddie, when alot of others copied the great Van Halen. I remember a sign held by a fan that read " Ace is God". Gene and Paul were insanely jealous of him when critics said Ace was the most talented instrumentally of the 4.
You said it! A lot of shredders suck as musicians and sound the same as the other shredder. No personality, style, depth, mileage, feeling. Just number exercises. Ace tells a story in his solos. It's like a song within a song. Not just numbers regurgitated out over a tonal template. Music is communication. Listening to someone talk as fast as they can without being creative or innovative is really annoying as well as being forgetful.
I’m a dad who is fulfilling a childhood dream of playing and also gives me a touchstone with my youngest son who is very talented. This video helped me a lot! Breaking into sections was wise.
love your teaching method.....I've been looking for a great tutorial with tablature. You get right to the point without drawn out words cause we're so eager to get on with the lesson. Much appreciated believe me.
Unfortunately we will never know the shredding talents of the best up and coming shredder ALS took his ability to play but not to create . Jason Becker you will always be a badass guitar player.
watch?v=dhUXUKkFPFg Interlude followed by solo sections start around 2:00. Learned it a while back from that guy. Hes no Chris but it has all the info you need. Check out part 1 for the rest of the song. Rock on mate!
Thanks for the Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you heard about - Riddleagan Blossoming Solo Remedy (probably on Google)? It is a smashing exclusive guide for mastering guitar scales minus the hard work. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my m8 got amazing results with it.
Great lesson!! I have done several KISS covers but have struggled with this solo... I was trying to learn it strictly from tabs like I have all of Ace's solos. This video made it click for me. Thanks!! Ace did some great solos back in the 70's. Check out Rocket Ride or Save Your Love.. I have a cover video for Save Your Love posted on my channel.
A bit late to the party I know, but many thanks for this tutorial, which is probably the clearest one I've seen, and yes I've watched the great man's lesson! I first heard this Xmas 1982 when I got 'Alive II' on cassette and I've wanted to be able to play it ever since. Thanks to you, getting ever closer! Question is, do you intend to do the live extended solo version from 'Alive II' at some point? Cheers!
Hi Chris. Nice job. I’ve always enjoyed Ace’s flavor of vibrato. Anyhoo big fan of your teaching. Like to talk to you with lessons about connecting scales across the board.
Chris, you're a mind-blowing RUclipsr, many thanks for all the videos I've wanted to learn a solo from Highway Star by DP, could you make a vid on this one?))
ace's solos may not be technical but his melodic ideas is what makes him better than jimmy page according to marty.everybody has their own opinion, personally not a big kiss fan but adding different content to your channel is always a good thing though.
Forgive me, but it kind of blows me away how much explaining it seems to require for people to learn guitar today. In the 1980s, we had very few tabs available like they are today (although most of them suck) and absolutely zero youtube vids to work with. We just kind of used used our ears to figure it out. I would think if you can see the vid and see the tab and hear the sound, that should be enough without all the verbal commentary. Maybe just play it with the tabs at slow, medium and full tempo and leave the person learning it to work with that? No? Does it really require this much verbal labor for people to learn now? Especially with Ace Frehley, who uses a lot of common licks (in a good way) heard in many 70s guitarists.
@@chriszoupa7898 "Because of how it makes you feel when you listen to it!" - E X A C T L Y ! Well said, mate - what else _is_ there, at the end of the day ? Why else even _listen_ to music ? Thanks, man. Brilliant job on the lesson - but to me it sounds like a different (?) version of 'shock me' - the one I'm most familiar with was the 'b' side of the single "Christine sixteen". Where does this one come from ? (solo is mostly the same, mind you)

Just want to say a huge thank you for what you have been doing over the past years, you're the reason I have never given up on this instrument...
That's an amazing thing to say to someone. Thanks heaps!
The version of the solo on Kiss Alive II is actually pretty great. Thanks for the vid man.
Chris, you've nailed it here. I've loved this song since seeing them live in Auckland, 1980.
Most excellent breakdown. My favorite Ace Solo for sure and you are spot on!

You're an excellent teacher. thank you for making this doable!
I found this clear than Ace's own lesson on the track 😀 Thank you for sharing.
I'm just about done learning it. Now working on my vibrato areas. Love this lesson! thanks Chris!
Your lesson is even better than the one by Ace Frehley, thank you
Greggery Peccary that's a lovely thing to say. Thanks brotha
One of my all time favorites!

Yes i would love that solo
I don't think I have ever heard Ace Frehley's and Randy Rhoad's names mentioned in the same sentence before, until now :D Thanks for the great lesson!
So perfectly done I had to sub. Bravo!
Just the right touch.
Thanx a lot for the lesson and BRAVO !!
Always wanted to play this as a kid !!! :-)
Ace was KISS. He is a very tasteful player in the vein of Jimmy Page, Clapton and Kossoff. It's his best solo next to "Strange Ways."
Great lesson!! I have done several KISS covers but have struggled with this solo... I was trying to learn it strictly from tabs like I have all of Ace's solos. This video made it click for me. Great lesson, thanks for sharing........were you using fingers and no pick?

marty friedman said that he thinks ace frehly is better than jimmy page
I will have to take Ace's work more seriously if that's the case!
ace's solos may not be technical but his melodic ideas is what makes him better than jimmy page according to marty.everybody has their own opinion, personally not a big kiss fan but adding different content to your channel is always a good thing though.
who really gives a fuck who is "better"? is music about expression or is it a competitive sport?
You can sing aces solos..that's what makes them great
PLEASE THE DUAL BY DETHKLOK
\m/ BRUTAL \m/
Redo One
Mastodon, Roots Remain. For the love of all that is cheeky.
Any guitarist that thinks kiss is easy to play play creatures of the night album and guarantee most gutarist cant play it.

It’s pretty surprising to hear you say you thought KISS is lame. Especially, considering how much Dimebag worshipped at the feet of Ace Frehley
David Emmons I'm learning these things now!
He did a George Lynch solo even though he thought it was silly. I am way not surprised he thought KISS was lame.

Thanks for the lesson Chris but honestly I can't see why this solo made you a fan of them, it's kinda mediocre
Because of how it makes you feel when you listen to it!
