Jermaine Pennant recalled on Goals on Sunday how he was out partying until 6am before scoring a hat-trick on his Arsenal debut.
Pennant was not expecting to play in the match in May 2003, so decided to go out the night before.
However, the next day he was included in the starting line-up, much to his surprise and shock, and then scored a hat-trick as Arsenal won 6-1 against Southampton.
Explaining the incident, Pennant said: "I thought I'd be on the bench, maybe come on for five minutes…so I went out the night before. I was advised not to by friends, they tried to lock me in but I climbed out the window and got in their cab.

We also had a lot of promising non English young talent that failed miserably, quincy owusu-abeyie, Fran Merida, God wannabe Bendtner, Nordtveit ...etc but as far as I know most of those players that were dropped out had some kind of successful careers at mid-tables teams or in other weaker leagues. Wenger was very compassionate, for example the only reason that he kept Alexander Song despite the fact that we had Gilberto Silva, Fabregas, Flamini and Abu Diaby ahead of him is that he was taking care of his 28 siblings. Eventually it paid off though as he had unbelievable season in 09 or 2010, I forgot.

Never heard something so ridiculous in my life, blaming his up bringing for not getting into the England squad. He didn't get into the squad for two reasons: 1) there were far better players in his position at that time, 2) his attitude was awful. I'm tired of these failed footballers who had all the talent in the world, p*** it up the wall, then blame their unfortunate circumstances. Pennant, like Joey Barton and Stan Collymore, had a difficult upbringing, but so did Pele, the original Ronaldo, and Messi until he went to Barcelona. Maybe the greed of knowing, at Arsenal, Liverpool and others, he'd be earning thousands per week (?) just for being there didn't help. But countless people gave him chances, and he didn't use them. The background stuff is sad, but everyone has agency for what they do in life.
