Made me wish I was surf fishing on a Florida beach! That pompano may have been grazing on sand fleas...all those other fish, the whiting and croakers, will munch sand fleas too. Thanks for sharing--you're living the dream!
Dude, surf fishing the beaches of Florida is one of the best experiences a person can have, besides the mangrove fishing, but surf is just a little more relaxing. Thanks for sharing, it helps that fishing itch! I'm looking forward to finally moving out to FL in the next month or two from landlocked AZ and can't wait! Tight lines brotha!!!
I really need to surf fish other places! These whiting look verrry similar to California Corbina, which are super fun catching on light or ultralight line here in the SoCal surf. I wonder if the same/similar tactic could work on the beaches out your way: size 4-6 mosquito hooks, sand fleas (aka sand crabs out here), 18-24" leader of 4# flouro and a 1/4-1/2oz bullet or egg sinker/bead/swivel above that. They usually will slide up the beach when the sand crabs are shallow in the sand, waiting for the shore break to dislodge an easy meal then feed on them and swim back out into the trough to wait for the next wave to push them back up, so if you pitch your bait into the zone where the wash is (even though it may seem counterintuitive) oftentimes you'll induce a strike. What I like about fishing this way is that it's super lightweight, mobile and forces you to look for different areas where there's structure - plus, it's always good for me get some exercise in and walk the beach. It's a lot of fun fishing for them and a lot of guys end up sight fishing them too. I'm guessing the whiting out there have the same/similar feeding habits?
I used to surf fish for blues with a gator spinner w a treble hook /leader back when i was a kid 11-14 yrs old and never really knew how dangerous wading way out there could be while doing this .I caught a lot of blues /amberjack some pompano's and one time a bonita tuna .But do recall seeing sharks chasing schools of fish in the waves as the sun hit them right ,also a turtle popped his head up about a foot or two away from where i was chest deep casting my lure beyond the obvious run of blues . I'd imagine people take more precautions now ? This was back in 77-78 and a lot of things were going on unchecked i guess ?
About 10 years ago when I'd make my yearly Florida trips to visit an old friend, we'd fish nonstop and would always be wading out into chest deep water. So it still takes place. But after a few years we realized (in the areas we were fishing anyway) it was actually more productive to hit the first few troughs which we could normally cast to from thigh/waist deep water.
whitings always bite shrimp but will be less apt to bite sand fleas (sometimes they do but not as much as shrimp) and the pompano love sand fleas, you can try small fiddler crabs too
I havent had much luck at Round Island park. Maybe I should go further south to Avalon! although the other day i did catch a hardhead catfish. good video!!
@ 50 secs. that's a pretty big whiting. I've just started fishing in FL. in the St. Augustine area. Tell us your secrets ! Do you peel your shrimp? Do you cut them in half and put the head on one hook and the tail on the other? Do most fish prefer the head over tail?
I don't get it. I just moved to Ponte Vedra and planning to learn how to fish. You are catching and releasing...why? you are releasing because they are too small? or cannot keep it in PV? need a license to fish off the beach?
If you are on the Treasure Coast and want to specifically fish the surf call Rich at pompanorich.com. If you want to wade fish Google Jayson Arman Land Based Fishing Charters to catch snook, trout and redfish in the Indian River.
that Spot was not a Spot..looked like a Pinfish but not sure, i just know it is not Spot. Pinfish look like that but the spot they have is usually near the gills like a Spot..and Spot do not have a complete dorsal fin like that.
Why do you use all of those colorful things? Do those actually help you to catch pompano? I just started my channel. Making videos is a blast. We caught 65 whiting the other day. What part of Fl. are you in?
Yes, I think they do help attract the fish to your bait and keep the bait off of the bottom a few inches. I'm in St. Lucie County. Good luck with your channel.
Hello LG. Orlando is surrounded by great bass lakes within 30 minutes of you. That would be your closest and easiest opportunity to get some fishing in. If you head an hour east to the ocean, the cocoa beach area has great surf fishing and intracoastal fishing opportunities. Good luck.
@@fishyourassoffcom do you think that using a smaller bait/hook i could get more of them. I even set a close in rod with the regular pomp stuff on it hoping to get more of them and less hard heads.
@@fishyourassoffcom Seriously? Damn, you sound like you're from Redondo Beach or something. Maybe there's a generic "beach" accent I'm picking up on, lol.
Fishing in Fl sucks. I've fish all over and you can spend hours out and not catch sh#t. I noticed that people never say where they are and what time, and tide they are fishing.
Use squid if you just like to catch fish i use it all the time in st aug and it's really hard for it to come off the hook i also like to use live shrimp . Fishing the incoming tide seems to be better dont fish at the vilano beach pier i have been out there several times and never saw anyone catch anything go to mickler's beach in ponte vedra and when you get on the beach walk down about 400 yards to the right i have had a lot of luck out there
I'm certainly not going to subscribe to your channel ... or even watch it again. If you're not going to keep a fish, is it gonna kill you to walk your dainty little tootsies a few feet into the water to release the fish beyond the wave backwash ... instead of just throwing them down on the practically dry sand to get beat up by the next incoming wave!! And no, I'm not some vegetarian nutcase, I'm an avid saltwater and freshwater fisherman who believes that if you're not going to keep what you catch, at least release it humanely so it has the best chance to survive.
@@musicmaster92 : I'm not a 'hater', just an ethical sportsman who, I'll admit, came on a bit too strongly with that comment - though tossing the fish in the sand did bother me.

Nice fishing. Gotta love fishing in Florida! Lived there a few years back! I'm catching sheepshead here in NC right now.
Thanks. I can't imagine not fishing.
Hello from Australia, nice fish, we catch whiting in the surf too but they are a different species, cheers.
Hey Steve. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.
Always love your videos! Thanks.
Thanks. I appreciate that.
I like beach fishing when I go on vacation. I subscribed.
Hahah the croaker slam. You caught an atlantic croaker AND a striped croaker on the same day.

Try using shrimp fishbites you may have a bit better luck for pompano
Great video!

nice soccer kick to get that bait on the shark pole.
Whiting are a great tasting fish. Just gotta catch them large enough

it's the whitin better shark bait than the croker
I have never used a whiting for sharks but I am sure that a shark would love to eat them. Thanks for watching.

Here in Brazil this fish, first fish, call "papa-terra" or "betara". Beautiful fish!
It's called Ground Mullet where I fish the Gulf o' Mexico. Just like whiting, but with great pattern and colors.
Wade Patton yea we call em channel mullet here in Grand isle Louisiana
I added about 150 yards of line to me reel and when I surf fish it always runs out of line in my casts

The fish Ive always called spots are different than your spot. The ones I catch look similar to croakers but they dont have the sharp gill plate.
mole crabs are best for pompano

Try fishing on south Africa its amazing
Just don't use Google maps to get their.
Are you using a swivel on your rig or are you trying straight to your main line? Thanks
Yes. The swivel helps a lot with minimizing the line twist. See more fishing tips here www.fishyourassoff.com/how-to.html
Whiting are a type of drum
What type of fishing line would you suggest for this type of fishing? Thanks
Hey. I think that I was using 8 lb mono for this video and my rigs were made up of 20 lb mono.

It sure will. Learn more here www.fishyourassoff.com/how-to.html
