    Of all the commentary that I’ve heard - John, yours is the best. I don’t say this to blow smoke your way. I say this because you come at this from a position of love and not fear. It’s indicative of the way we should all think and that is to take the time to leave our egos behind and be starkly honest with the notion that positive changes can be made.

    John I truely appreciate your thoughts and words. As a retired psych nurse I have seen everything you describe first hand year after year. Yes the FBI dropped the ball and so did the community. This young man has been sending signals for a long time. Blaming a weapon for this horific situation is not the answer as we know. We as a community need to be proactive and you are wise to put that out there again. Thank you.
    Not many people are aware that Las Vegas hotels have started installing little black boxes at access points to prevent future disasters. My question is why haven't we heard of any schools doing this. Doesn't it seem reasonable to keep the guns out of all schools except for those authorized, any education level. Some would say Vagas can afford it but if every school in the nation purchased them the price would drop significantly. Just thought.
    Thanks for being a leader of the sanity movement,
    Peter Jurow

    John, after watching scores of your videos, I finally have to comment. Not to complain, argue, or correct, but to thank you for your professionalism, respectfulness, and approach. I follow you not only because I like the lessons and videos you share, but more because you display those traits in all your work. Thank you for that, and for sharing your personal experiences, especially in this video. It's refreshing to hear a sound, logical, heartfelt argument devoid of political rhetoric (from either side). Keep up the great work.

    I've spent almost 30 years as an ER nurse and have witnessed 1st hand the failure of our mental health "care". We've held adolescents for more than 10 days under watch, on a hold and have a court ordered Psych clear them from the ER because no placement was available, ANYWHERE. Great content!

      I agree for 15 yrs 1998-2013 I worked as a healthcare security officer. In that time i spent many weekends and week days on welfare standbys for mental health patients in the ER because there were no beds available in the inpatient psych units. Worse was watching children stuck in adult ER rooms because many of the child psych units closed.

    John, thank you for a well-reasoned and presented assessment of the situation. I rapidly tire of the rabid mouthings of radicals on both sides of the case. Your suggestion of providing both a deterrent and denial of access for soft targets is useful. The ideas can be used for any soft target in our society, but I think the focus should be on schools and other places where our children are.

    Well said John. Thank you for your frankness and honesty. I hope others on both sides of the issue can reach a common ground and solutions as you have suggested. And I applaud your willingness to contribute to potential solutions of training our educators and administrators to defend our kids. I will add that as much as I’ve read about this tragedy, I have not found much information to understand how this murderer was able to reach the areas within the school unnoticed. I think the level of perimeter security is at best inadequate at most of our school campuses. I know of simple measures local to me...such as adding a gate guard...only recently obtained funding for just the high schools.

    John, I've never heard anyone else ad-lib an analysis as good as this one. Your points on the bump-stock ban, (and how ineffective it was), and your points about mental health were excellent. The BIGGEST point, (and I think the best), is avoiding one side shouting-down the other. It does no good... zero. Starting from common ground starts good discussion. You're very insightful. We all know the answers will not come easily. Thanks, Man.

One other point: The media does not help because different people watch different channels with different presentations, and that's all they go on in their arguments. I'd encourage people to get to the truth, and accept it, then work from there. Thanks again for all your videos. I hope both sides can quit shouting and start using logical conversation. I'm glad most of the comments here are respectful.

You also put forward a solution, which if anyone does any research into the matter, would actually prevent a lot of violence, and help a lot of people.

    John, so well done, appropriate, eloquent, and a bunch of other words that I can't find right now. You are so far from being alone with friends, co-workers, or family struggling with mental health issues. How could it be to lofty a goal for this divided nation to zero in on this aspect of the problem. If only thing could have gone correctly in the field of mental health for this destroyed human, if it can't be his family, this may never had happened. This could be said of the kids that are killed in south Chicago everyday, and their murderers. But the world is full of tortured lives and most of them never make a headline or cause this death and destruction. If just a few more men and women could say they will try to make some difference, with work, education, contact, or at least an effort in their own family then that would make the difference. It must. At least this is what I walk away with from your video.

Like you said ALL of us want our children/families to be safe at school, and I would add at places of worship too. So, it's going to take ALL of us to help prevent this from happening again, and it starts with respecting others, differing viewpoints or not. We must learn the lessons, apply them, reassess, adjust as necessary.

    I suffer from mental health issues. Anxiety and depression, panic attacks, and the cause is still not officially documented. I almost certainly would be dead today if it hadn't been for my medication over the past few years. Finding good ones with bearable side effects has been difficult, but I have had a support system that had my back the whole time. If I ever start to fall, I have built my network of loved ones to save me. And honestly, if giving up my guns would potentially save someone from dying at the hands of my health problem, then it would be worth it. I would like them back at some point, but that is up for a doctor to decide. People also need to keep in mind that therapy is an amazing tool. Drugs can't stand alone forever. Right now, I'm between therapists, but I'm not going to try to live on my 20mg pill every day and pretend like my life is peachy.

    • @harrod19
      @harrod19 6 лет назад +4

      Daniel Hoover similar here. Benzodiazepines saved my life then SSRIs stole it again. I never found one with "bearable" side effects. 6 years I tried and 9 of 10 times the sides were FAR worse than any good. Like you said, counselling was FARRRR more beneficial. As is my support network. I threw the SSRIs away 3 weeks ago and life has never been better. Benzos and beta blockers with therapy and family are working amazing. Good luck to you.

    John, most people dont say SSRIs make normal people murderers. It CAN increase the risk greatly in people who are susceptible to violent tendencies. It says that on every insert for these drugs. Are you telling me you as a range instructor know more than clinical physicians?

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  6 лет назад +3

      I am telling you that I know more than almost anyone who isn't a clinical psychiatrist about SSRIs. Seriously. And warning labels on all drugs are for ANY known side effects of ANY severity and ANY frequency. And when they cause mood swings they're almost always suicidal, not homicidal, and almost always immediately upon loading of the drug. They're simply not present upon stabilized usage. Simple as that.

    • @col.cottonhill6655
      @col.cottonhill6655 6 лет назад +1

      Active Self Protection Extra I Will agree with you it ticks me off too when people just say these drugs CAUSE homicidal tendencies in anyone who takes them. It just feels like you didnt acknowledge the fact that in people with certain cases of extreme schizophrenia they can cause an increased risk of violence. It is more rare. Especially compared to the amount of suicidal tendencies in those tsking SSRIs.
      No disrespect meant sir, im a big fan of your channel. And i know if I made a comment about something to do with self defense or something that i was mistaken about you would make sure to correct me so others can also learn. Keep it up and God bless ✌

    • @col.cottonhill6655
      @col.cottonhill6655 6 лет назад

      Janelle McKinney I think it would just be dishonest to say they do not factor whatsoever in violence for people already susceptible that end up on them. Even if its super rare, like most people i know would probably hurt themselves not another innocent person. That doesnt mean there arent super rare cases just because its not common. There is a scary theme though if you look at the amount of psychos and mass shooters there is a scary re-occuring theme with mood altering drugs.

Therefore, I concur with everything John said about mental health. This case is such a tragic loss because someone actually noticed his behavior risks and called the FBI. Praying for everyone involved. Also concur with comments about the breakdown of the nuclear family unit and the lack of a respect for the value of human life.

We need to allow teachers and faculty to conceal carry on campus - with the correct training, if there was even 1 other person with a firearm there that day the body count could have been a lot lower... thanks john, keep up the good work.

    I think most will agree this process needs to start at home. The nuclear family has deteriorated and this has contributed greatly to catastrophes of this sort. We need moms and dads who are engaged. We need to stop trying to be our children's best friends, and start being responsible parents. Teach your children respect for authority and the value of life. EVERY life is important. God created everyone equally, and loves everyone. He hates our sin, but loves the sinner. We have so many fatherless homes. Studies show children need a father. I know that's not popular in today's society, but it's true. The Bible says " spare the rod and spoil the child. " That doesn't mean you should beat your children, but they have to understand actions have consequences. We need to realize the value of a family. It's an uphill battle, but we have to start somewhere. I say we start at home.

    Really good stuff, John. Thanks for being a little vulnerable here, as well. Your thoughts are rational and not emotionally driven. You are spot on that we need to find common ground with the "other side" so we can have civil conversations. Mental health system in the US needs a lot of work and having well-trained, licensed CCW teachers in our schools and more police/armed security would be a deterrent to these types of attacks.

    if your suspended from school or fail to graduate you should not be able to buy a gun until your 23 years old. The guns have always been there, something else has changed. We have a social breakdown problem, NOT a gun problem...

    • @sethtenrec6476
      @sethtenrec6476 6 лет назад +1

      The government does need to fix that, there's no reason that people with mental issues like this should be able to legally buy a gun, it's only pure greed from the gun industry and their puppet the NRA that allows that, Trump administration allowing psychos to purchase weapons.

    • @sethtenrec6476

      seth tenrec "Trump administration allowing psychos to purchase weapons"
      Are you referring to the Obama gun ban that would have prevented people on social security who need help handling their finances from purchasing firearms? That is not a mental health diagnosis and falls far short of being adjudicated mental defective.

    • @jeffprice6421
      @jeffprice6421 6 лет назад

      @seth tenrec You clearly didn't watch the video. Or you didn't process it. Please watch again. Objects do not injure anyone.
      Medical malpractice kills more people in the US than firearms. Should we ban medicine? We need to work hard to eliminate the aberrations, but we need to recognize that they are aberrations.
      States with higher rates of firearms ownership have lower rates of crime.
      So the "puppet" NRA is reducing crime. How does that jibe with your world view?

    • @TheSuburban15

      FightlessFighter. In the 1700s people traveled by boat or horse and communicated with quill pens and manually-operated printing presses. "It is the current year."

    Here’s an honest thought I had while I was watching your video and thinking back on this event.
    With the rise of the non-denominational megachurch, more and more people outside of Christ are lured into these more relaxed “worship” spaces. Their message puts more emphasis on Jesus as a cool friend and God as a cool father who is there when you need him and turns his back when you want to party.
    These places are not salt and light. They are Christian convenience stores where you can pick up what you like and dismiss the parts you don’t. These places are not the distinct, holy groups of Christians called for in the 1st century founding of the church.
    When reasonably smart people are shown “church” as not meaningfully different than the life they’re in, they will choose to stay out. Why join there when it’s just like my life now but with more expectations to give a contribution to the band up front?
    The biggest periods of growth in church history were when they were plainly different than everyday life. Not easy to slip in and out. Actually taking care of widows and orphans. Less emphasis on a superstar “pastor” and more on the God of the Bible.
    We need a renewed emphasis on church as distinct from everyday life. People will seek that out and it will give us something to tell others about. Not just, we’ve got a band and free coffee.
    More true, dedicated, peace-loving Christians. More inherent moral goodness. Less political correctness. Less crime.

    Totally agree with everything you said John. Mental health does need to be taken very seriously, especially in children where mental illness has the highest likelyhood to throw someone off a course of success in their later life, where it will just multiply in severity.
    As adults, we can often times look past tough times and keep ourselves out of mental illness. For children, this isn't a possibility. If they fail a few years in school becasue they're depressed, the world crushes them in pressure which only makes it worse.

This has helped me understand that people on both sides need to stop talking past each other, I have been guilty of this. This is a touchy subject because I live close to the school and I have friends who were there in this shooting and seeing everyone trying to push gun control and ignore the underlying issues that you need to research to realize is terrible. People are ignoring the serious problems like mental health while attempting to push things like gun control which will just make the problems worse.

    Oh my goodness! This is exactly what I have been saying for some time now. If you know someone has mental disorders, they should have their guns removed. Whether it be temp or perm. I work in a special needs school in Florida similar to a school this guy went to before he went to Parkland. He had emotional behavioral disorders (EBD) and, in my opinion, should not have had access to firearms. I work with kids like him and know how they react to certain issues, and they can be very unstable.

    I take a SSRI for anxiety, I wouldn't be violent without them, admittedly, but I function on a level that I just wouldn't be able to without them. They have saved my life. I would never deny or shame anyone for medicine they take for a physical illness, this is no different. I'm loving the swing towards being really open about mental health. When I first got ill last year I took the decision to be really open about how I felt I was so surprised how many people were relieved to be able to talk to someone who understood. So that's my mantra now - be open if you can, it's just so important that we talk.

    It is refreshing to hear what I consider to be a truly objective take on this situation. I’m interested to hear your take on the new information about the armed officer that did not act. I’m very torn about expecting someone to run toward an AR with bad intentions, but was that not his job?
    I hope we as a community can convey that most important point; If turning in every firearm I own would put a stop to this, guaranteed, I wouldn’t hesitate. I wish those on the other side of this argument would see that there is no sliver of a chance that would be effective. It would only make us all less safe.
    So let us all avoid these high emotions and show some empathy. You can see why someone who operates on compassion alone would think that making this gun disappear would solve it all. Can you calmly convey to them why it won’t?

    John, very thoughtful and moving analysis. As a former LEO, I will add that local LE must bear its share of responsibility in this instance with the FBI simply based on the sheer number of interactions they had with this subject. I only wish at least one of those responding officers, who I am sure had substantial awareness of this boy's "frequent flyer" status had thought to go the extra mile to try to get him some help. Perhaps they did but it just has not come to light yet.
    One thing that I am almost certain you are aware of by now (revealed officially on 2/22/18) is that there was in fact an armed school resource LEO on campus at the time of the event. Inexplicably, 54 year old Deputy Scott Peterson, who has resigned as of today, chose to take up a position outside the school and not enter nor intervene, despite his training to the contrary, according to an official statement by Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel today.
    I truly don't know what to think about this officer's failure to act despite what seems to have been clear knowledge that innocents were being killed and that it was his job to try to stop it. Ironically, press reports tonight indicate that the ex-Deputy has requested police protection for himself and his family apparently due to fear of reprisals from families and friends of the dead. This is one of those pieces of information that is important, but you really wish you did not know, especially if you've been a cop and know what he was trained to do versus what he did. I suppose that to stop a bad guy with a gun, we need a good guy AND a gun, and in this case, our "guy" wasn't up to the task. I keep praying some fact will come to light that will show why he could not go in, but I'm not that hopeful. I don't envy him having to explain this.
    I join you in your concern for the issues of mental health you outlined, and in prayer for the victims and wisdom and guidance for our policy makers. Best wishes.

      I'm in the next county to the south, Miami-Dade. I'm hearing as of today that there were three additional Broward officers who took up positions behind their cars with guns drawn, but who did not make entry, for a total of four BCSO officers remaining outside. Apparently this sparked a complaint from the responding Coral Springs officers who DID go in as soon as they arrived, and who claim that the BCSO guys remained outside even after they arrived and made entry.
      Apparently this sparked a heated confrontation between the Coral Springs town manager and Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel on the evening of the 15th at a vigil for the victims. Local news says today that a report on the responding officer's actions is expected to be released sometime next week.

    Yea spot on assessment coupled with compassion for those with problems that can lead to this kind of atrocity. I too knew a vet who once pulled from under a bridge did well for a while then committed suicide, not a "bad guy" but just probably in a way didn't want to change or somehow couldn't as a result of mental disorder. Really broke my heart. This condition is certainly a contributing factor that can lead to violence. God bless for pastoral support in your community, we need more of this........
