I left our Congregation last night at our transition break between meetings because I left my water in my car. When I went to go back inside I found the door was locked and I was so happy! It was long overdue IMHO. The brother was sitting in the foyer where he could see the auditorium and the doors. We also have CCTV outside monitored inside. We meet twice weekly and I'm ready, I carry every where, every where. I won't ask anyone for permission to defend my life or those around me. So sad it has come to this....
SuZet Rides an Andalusian I just do not go to the Post Office any more. Our School Zones in Wisconsin are Gun Free Zones, and carry the force of law. Its irritating to me that I am NOT ALLOWED to carry in my own car concealed at my Son’s school. The most important thing to me attends that school, and the Government does not want me to have the ability to protect my family. Its absurd.
I'm an agnostic young man, but I grew up in the church and still visit more than many "religious" people I know. Even before finding out that you are a pastor, I (for lack of a better phrase) saw the light of God in you. The uptick in church attacks has me troubled; less for myself, and more for those who seek communion and fellowship at what should be a safe place. I'm grateful you made this video, and though I expected you to make something akin to this, I am pleasantly surprised at the depth of this video. I'll be sure to share this. Be safe, and keep helping others.
Saudude I’m an atheist and never felt comfortable the few times I went to church as a child. That being said, I think the most positive thing about church is that it creates a sense of community. The lack of community today, which is caused by various reasons, is one of the greatest flaws with our current society. I believe that is one of the reasons why crime rates are much higher in larger cities than most small towns.
Active Self Protection Extra love your channel so informative. I live in Floresville 10 mins away from SS. I actually saw the shooter last Monday in all black tactical gear at another church but didn't think anything of it since Halloween was the next day. I remember thinkin his vest had a bunch of loops like to hold clips and whatnot. This is the first time I've heard he was wearing his helmet. This makes me 100% sure it was him. I only heard he was wearing his mask during the massacre. When I saw him he had his helmet in his hand he wasn't wearing it.
Great video, John. I'm only just thinking about CCW, and your videos have amazing depth and common sense perspective. It's really helping me in my analysis of whether to carry. Thank you for all you do.
You answered some of the things I've been thinking about, particularly about an attacker with armor. 2 to the chest, then switching to the abdomen/torso sounds sensible.
Excellent video, John!! You need way more subscribers, will definitely do my part to help spread the word about your channel. One of the best I've seen so far!
Lesson #1: Carry your firearm with you EVERYWHERE, laws be damned. Lesson #2: Carry your firearm with you EVERYWHERE, laws be damned. While the force disparity between a pistol and a rifle are quite substantial, imagine if 10 CCW'ers had mounted a defense against the shooter - that coward piece of shit would've run just as he did when Mr. Willeford showed up with his rifle. As John says so often, your tools can only help you if you have them with you...
I suffered for years with depression, anxiety, and PTSD. I finally decided to get help, and I'm glad I did. But, I was and am worried that my decision to get help may wind up costing me my ability to defend myself, my family, and our home. I am a second amendment absolutist for this very reason. Good people need something to blame when tragedies happen, and as gun owners we preach that the gun is not to blame. So the next item down the list is mental health. but we have to be careful with our words when it comes to this topic. Those who wish to take our means to protect ourselves will jump on the chance to start with people who have sought help for mental health issues. They have already gone after people who use medical marijuana, as if these people voluntarily gave up their right to self preservation just because they chose to seek relief from something other than man made chemicals. I know that all mental health issues are not created equally, but I think that we have to demand that if someone is going to be stripped of their God given rights, that it must be through due process. Our court system is already clogged, but this is important. We can't just have arbitrary laws that say that automatically prohibit a person with one condition or another from exercising their rights. From that point, it's just too easy to add more and more conditions. And, more people would continue to suffer as I did in order to stay off of whatever list there is of people with mental illness. Be careful please.
Thanks John, you are so convincing! I applied for my CWC yesterday and hope I will be proficient to protect my family. I did not know before watching many of your clips how dangerous the world is.
Wow John, I really like the idea of being able to check to see if someone I plan on selling a firearm to is legally allowed to posses one. (Personally I wouldn't sell to anyone I don't know for this very reason) That is something I think could really help and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention.
If you don’t know the person, you shouldn’t sell them a firearm. If you really must, then go through a FFL. It’s really simple. Personal responsibility is a wonderful thing.
I use 2 defensive rounds in my 9mm pistol. One is capable of piercing armor. MAC did a test on it and he was shocked it went through a level 3 Spartan Armor product. I use this round because I like it but after seeing this animal wearing body armor I'm glad it can penetrate armor just in an extremely rare case I run into somebody with body armor. Another great video!
The reason why this man had firearms wasn't because everybody didn't have access to the NICS system. But because those who are responsible for reporting to the NICS system failed to do so. This man was a monster, not a victim of "mental health". I'm sorry but how does someone strick a child so hard that they fracture the child's skull and not get charged with a felony? If we cared more about detaining aggressive and violent people and less about trying to treat them for some "mental health" problem. We could keep people like this from harming other people.
WaitWait NotReady yes, he shouldn't have been free. The child thing alone was completely despicable. He should have been locked up indefinitely where the prisoners would have escalated matters when they found out what he did.
Stephen Bray- hahahaha wow so your a liberal I take it? Only people wearing metal badges can have a gun....yes of course I am. I have been doing it for about 2 years and never had to take it out of the holster because of a threat. Did you get the answer you wanted out of me troll?
TJ Jones I live on Cape Breton Island, Canada. I own five rifles and I would never take a gun to Mass, but I don't live in a country that is obsessed with firearms and people that think they are entitled to be above the law. My doors are open my keys are in the car, I'm unarmed, unafraid and I have free healthcare.
Stephen Bray-Well I hope you are as safe as you feel. You wouldn't and couldn't understand my way of thinking unless you lived in the USA. Where I live is very safe but the town in which I work is less safe.....its not dangerous but there is a good deal of heroin and other drugs people are addicted to. Usually there aren't major problems maybe a few burglaries a year but not usually murder. It is better to have a gun and not need it than not have a gun and need one. You would think churches are safe but not now days. But isn't it against the law to use your 5 rifles to shoot an intruder!?!? Do you need to store your guns part way disassemble? I was talking to some friends that live in Canada and like you they thought it was crazy. If I remember right they say they are not allowed to shoot a person trying to harm them and if they do the courts come after them. One said they keep a bow under there bed though for selfdefense......i rather have a gun. They even said aren't you scared to go outside and live in America. lolol I said no I don't live in fear. They said I should move to Canada....i said thanks but I wouldn't want to. Free health care sounds nice but the way it actually works doesn't sound fun. The right to bear arms is a God given right that no country should be able to take away or limit for upright citizens of society.
Opening the NICS system is such a smart idea! I'm sorry your were directly affected by this massacre. I heard a surviver say something like "you should be safe in church but the devil never sleeps". It's the sad truth.
In Texas we can carry at our church as long as it’s not posted. Our church does have armed guards but I take my family’s safety into my own hands and choose to carry there. I typically avoid places where I can’t carry like the plague. Great video and keep up the good work.
Virgil Parks Just going to say this and that's it. Jesus of Nazareth was one of the most documented people in history. And do you know where he was from? He most certainly was more darker colored than white which doesn't even matter. Don't bash something if you don't know Jack about it.
Good question! Once you've done Basic Pistol and CCW, I would recommend a Defensive Handgun class with a regional-level trainer or quality, certified local trainer.
I've sold a handful of firearms over the years to individuals. I've always required them to have a CCW to protect myself. The idea of opening the NICS system to the public is a great idea.
I am 64 years old and retired from the Army. I watch your video diligently and learned a lot from them. This just might help me if I ever have to defend myself from home invasion.
Thank God we have several police officers in my church ! On top of that my great city made it mandatory years ago to have armed security at our churches ! God bless our country and churches !!!🇺🇸🙏😇
Good morning Stephen, I attend a moderately sized church in the Indianapolis Indiana area. In my state you are permitted open and concealed cary.. During the week My church also provides school. As a result there are signs posted at each entry point stating no guns allowed. When i asked the security team leader about this he informed me that since the church is also a school, guns are not allowed.on church grounds. Only the security team is permitted to carry. Should i carry even though there are signs posted?
Amen, brother! Jesus never promised his people peace on earth. Rather, He promised us suffering like He endured on the cross for our sake, along with personal testing. Since He already knows us from before time, the testing is for us to see ourselves as He sees us. May our Lord and Savior add years to your ministry. Chuck
I'm always worried that when in a shooting incident like this and you run to the help with your firearm that people might miss take you as one of the active shooters and police or another legally armed citizen might shoot you in the process. Would like to see an Active Self Protection extra on that, if there isn't already one. Thanks John, your videos are awesome and very educational.
Thanks for clarifying the difference in mental health, never heard is put clearly that way. It would be easy for the government to declare many citizens unfit for fire arms owner ship just on the type of medication one takes.
It's pretty well known that Britain has extremely strict gun laws. However, having a mental condition isn't a disqualifier as long as you stay on your medication.
I think having one trained and competent parishioner carrying a concealed force multiplier should be standard and part of an overall security plan in addition to having a secured environment once the service starts. It makes common sense today. I also think church leadership should strongly manage and communicate to parishoners that a security plan is in-place and discourage anyone other than designated individuals from bringing a LOADED force multiplier into a place of worship.
Thanks for the reply. I had no idea you were a pastor! I work with a campus ministry and am regularly involved in my local church. You hit on an issue that I was thinking of for weeks. Thanks for the recommendations on practical action after the shooting.
Hey John I love your videos. This one in particular though is my favorite. Lots of crazy and emotional responses come out after events like this, people say lots of things that make them look crazy or heartless or politically devious. I really wish everyone would take a lesson from you and wait to give measured informed comments. I also wish people wouldn’t broadcast the murderers picture and name all over the place. Regarding guns in church, does your church make known to your parishioners that there are armed security protecting everyone, or do you encourage every week attendees to get their CCW and train etc like you just said in your video? Or Both? My church is very hush hush about their security which I understand. I think part of the reason is that we are in a Chicagoland suburb and many of the attendees would feel squeamish knowing the person they are sitting next to could be armed.
It makes me so angry to live in Michigan where you can't carry in church unless the leadership grants you permission. I can't attend often anyways due to my work schedule, but I certainly won't be returning if my pastor won't allow it.
I would like to just able to do a transfer at a gun store. I live in Arizona and I couldn't believe that calling shops about this and they basically say you're on your own because the state doesn't require background checks for private sales. Don't make it mandatory, but available.
Great information. I appreciate your close connection to this tragedy. I am in Texas so this shooting hits close to home I was involved in some of the legal aftermath of a murder spree in 2013 by someone with even a longer, violent criminal record than the Sutherland Springs Atheist madman. I have great respect for my local DA and those judges that I have experience with but so left leaning or simply lazy politicians, judges and prosecutors make our judicial system into catch and release for far too many career criminals and those with known violent mental disorders. If you don't go after the criminals, more gun laws simply make society less safe but there still don't seem to be much appetite for improving the NICs system data or programs that are proven to save lives such as Project Exile that locks up violent criminals that use guns which do not require new federal laws. The Texas Carry License is actually very thorough which is why the shooter in this latest shooting was rejected so that is a great check if you are selling your private firearm in Texas. I like the message that we all need to be responsible for our and our families safety.
I understand the need to make such a long shot in your church. My sanctuary is rather large as well. With having the need to make such a long shot is there a particular gun that would be more effective at such a distance? AR-15 pistol? Etc. If anything larger than a handgun isn’t feasible to conceal at church, would he need to make a shot at such distance make it necessary to use a red dot or RMR for a hand gun? Any suggestions for the need to make such a long shot? Thanks :) - Rob
Hi Rob. I think handgun is the only thing that is likely to be on your person and so the best tool for this job. Irons CAN get it done, but a RDS on a pistol makes it much more doable. It's one of my motivators that got me to make the switch to a RMR on my daily carry gun.
God Bless John....what do you think about fight or flight response. Just seems odd that not many if any people ran out or launched some kind of counter ambush even if it was one or two guys bum rushing him while he reloaded. I know you have talked before about not just staying under cover waiting to be next...it hard to address but maybe worth a mention.
thanks, John. good discussion. i work in an ER, and it’s astounding how severely lacking the american psych system is. better than lobotomies and ECT, but not much better.
surprised he didn't have a couple of mags or at least 1 loaded and ready to go. he had said he grabbed a handful of rounds didn't know how many and just loaded a mag so luckily he didn't run into more attackers or he would have been short. glad he was victorious and won despite not being fully prepared.
How many of the dead were fully prepared at home though? You could have an arsenal and all the gear yet get shot by some random , even if armed in public. The black guy who sniped people from the boot of his car as they drove past a few years back, that's random and you can't defend against that. The best way to avoid getting shot is living in a community where everyone's on the same page and looks out for each other. Unfortunately we had another instance where a mentally unstable person was able to get powerful weapons and nobody noticed.
I'm with you up to the point where your talking about this system for immediate back ground checks. We need to use the legislation that currently exist and had those rules been followed this guy would have never had a gun. Use and leverage the laws on the books to our advantage before creating more laws that won't work. Whit that being said that still would not have prevented this animal from doing what he did. Bad people that want to do bad things are going to find a way to do them. It takes a good guy to stop a bad guy and this case is absolute proof positive to that truth. Love the vids John.
Thanks for all you do John. Q: Would you say this is an active shooter or a terrorist attack and why? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the Wal-Mart shooting that took place in Colorado.
Active murderer. Until we establish motive, we don't call attacks terrorist attacks. Terrorism is a defined term. If we establish motive that he wished to incite terror in the general population or in Christians in particular for some political end, then yes it will be classified as a terrorist attack.
News! Good news. I JUST HEARD THAT MY CHURCH IS LOCKING DOORS AND TAKING PRECAUTIONS! IT IS A START! Praise God, there is good starting to come from the tragedy! John, however, recovering at home, my neighbor had an MI and died and I had misplaced the Pastor's cell number but it was church time. My husband hurriedly went to church to find doors locked. He knocked on the doors and.....a child who was going to the bathroom opened the door for him! Good in this case. However, the adults are taking precautions. How do we explain to the children to not open doors, to get an adult? How do we explain it to their questions? Truth? Praying here.
Well said, I totally agree the stigma over mental biology vs physical biology is very bad thing. If you have an issue, physical, mental, spiritual.... go get it fixed.
Thank you so much for following the 72 hour rule. I wish some of the major political figures would do the same thing. ThAnks for helping with my spiritual fitness and as always protecting my ASP
One of your best, thanks for sharing your thoughts! My prayers to your connections at Southerland Springs.
".....an asset, not a liability....."
I carry at my Church.
Thank you John, be safe.

Locking the door is the most obvious. Having a designated usher for the service then provides that extra level of security.
Yes. Certainly not the be all/end all, but at least a good early warning system against an attack.
I locked the door at our church, and then let people in when it was safe, but then I got in trouble for it ) :
And I'm not old enough to carry either

Very nice !!! Well thought out !!! Great message !!!
Thank You, John. Very informative on all topics. Praying for all those souls lost, injured and family of loved ones lost.
Thank you

I'm in California and we have to do all PPT at an FFL with the same 10 day wait as buying a new gun.
Ryan Matheny I had to wait an hour once, I wasn't sure I could stand it but I powered through.
Christian here with a CCW and carry to church every time. Always hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Also, always be ready to meet the Lord!

I don't know the legality of whether it's a school during Sunday's services, but you run a risk if you choose to carry there.
Ok,
thank you for the quick response. Ill check on that.....we are actually considering changing churches due to this...
In case someone want to watch stephen interview search for it at louder with crowder yt channel.
Chuck
I have always thought a church collection was an easy target for someone to rob.
I hear you but don't think it's a huge problem. Police identify themselves. Good people don't shoot innocents.
Informative. Im sorry you lost friends
At 14.50 you cited statistics about training. Where are you getting these numbers?

I appreciate this video man. In what capacity do you preach on a Sunday?
As the pastor of the church I attend.
Smaller churches are generally less hush hush about security than larger churches.
It makes me so angry to live in Michigan where you can't carry in church unless the leadership grants you permission. I can't attend often anyways due to my work schedule, but I certainly won't be returning if my pastor won't allow it.
I had a frank discussion about this with my pastor, who thankfully agreed to allow carry so long as the weapon remains concealed.
I would like to just able to do a transfer at a gun store. I live in Arizona and I couldn't believe that calling shops about this and they basically say you're on your own because the state doesn't require background checks for private sales. Don't make it mandatory, but available.
Just let us go in a shop and do a 4473. Charge whatever you want I don't care.
Buy TRAINING!
I'm taking some force on force scenario training classes ASAP!
These are normal, good folk.
John, great video, keep up the good work. More people need to see this.
thanks, John. good discussion. i work in an ER, and it’s astounding how severely lacking the american psych system is. better than lobotomies and ECT, but not much better.
ECT is still currently being used today. I've not seen a lobotomy. I feel confident lobotomized people are around though.
scott goodman yes, but primarily for severe depression, and it is elective.
surprised he didn't have a couple of mags or at least 1 loaded and ready to go. he had said he grabbed a handful of rounds didn't know how many and just loaded a mag so luckily he didn't run into more attackers or he would have been short. glad he was victorious and won despite not being fully prepared.
It worked for him, but man that would have been tough.
If some of the people had been allowed to carry their side arms in church they could of shot back... Make it not illegal to carry a gun in church...
Daniel W ... Is it illegal to carry a gun in a church or Hospital in the state of Wisconsin. ..
OFF TOPIC... what Ammo would you carry...
I carry Federal HST.
Well said bud.
How is this the first I am hearing about this incident?
Dude, it's been humongous national news all week.
+Active Self Protection Extra I guess school has had grasp on my mind.
Can you sell through an FFL ?
Sure, but it's a pain and costs money.
News!
I think it's something to talk to the church family about.
I have a mental illness, but I am not a sociopath. However, my state law does and it prevents me from legally carrying in public places.
I guessed correctly on the black vest. Maybe because I heard u tap it idk lol
Was the Coward/murderer shot down with a shotgun or rifle? I heard two different things.
The defender used an AR15.
Well said, I totally agree the stigma over mental biology vs physical biology is very bad thing. If you have an issue, physical, mental, spiritual.... go get it fixed.
