Interesting Arrival into Busy Airport

- Based on the weather observations and forecast I departed Janesville, Wisconsin (JVL) VFR. As I got close to Chicago Aurora (ARR) airport I picked up a pop-up IFR clearance to descend below the clouds. I then entered a busy air traffic control tower pattern. After a couple 360's, extended downwind, abandoned base for a Saberliner and rejoining the final, I landed safely back at the home airport.
The intro external views are still being fine tuned for regular use in future videos. :)

Bad case of being low and slow, glad you made it down. appreciate the videos!
Thanks for the view of the Beach 18, and yes, that would be a cool flight, hope you get to go !
Amazing to be above the clouds ⛅️
that beach 18 made a great skydiving airplane back in 1968 i was 16 yrs old. i think i got 85 jumps out of that plane. then the dc3 .what a rush keep the great vids coming thank u
Nice flight getting Dizzy . Great flight
Kevin! Thanks
G'day Kevin,
Kevin here from Australia.
Great video the centre camera position and split screen towards the end was awesome. The busy landing made for great entertainment. But im betting a bit stressful for you.
Anyhoo thankyou for sharing stay safe and stay well.
✌ Peace man.
Great video. I have some B-18 time from long ago. Cargo hauling in Michigan. A great pilot I knew put one down in a field fully loaded with cargo after losing an engine one time.
I used to fly skydivers in a Beech 18......I hope you get a video made with that guy!!!
Very entertaining approach, although it may have been just a bit concerning for you at times . Thanks mate
WOW it's a cluster
"Not my best."
The airplane is reusable, right??? Great landing!!!!
Great shot from the underneath on take off! Keep up the great videos love your channel.
Interesting approach for sure. Also, a little taste of what the external cameras will show!
Boy that was a little crazy Kev , I don’t remember it being that busy there .. great flying !
A surprise video!!!! When you come to Arizona I would pay to fly with Kevin any day of the week and twice on Sunday if he would let me.
Reminds me of the last time I flew into Aurora. And the Tower could not remember my call sign. It all worked out though.
Thanks Kevin for the great videos! I remember when Aurora Airport was just a dirt road in the cornfield and an old barn in Sugar Grove. It's great to see it so modern for you pilots! Nice flying! From a fan in Albuquerque.
Was slam dunked into San Diego years ago (in a 172). Tower put me in front of an MD80. Tower also wanted my best forward speed ...lol. MD80 went around ...
There are some SHITTY Controllers!
@@scottp6539 All human.
"Oh hey Kevin" made me chuckle more than it should.
Love the cotton ball sky's. ✈️
Tower: "when you get through touching down turn left...." 😜
My grandparents both worked at the Beechcraft factory in Wichita, KS during the WW2 timeframe. They were part of the assembly crew for Beech 18s.
They were probably C-45s at that time. It would be awesome if you had pics of them at work.
Wow Kevin, bit of a stressful approach. My guess is that Jaime was happy she missed that flight. Thanks for the mid-week video
I had never heard of a 'Sabreliner', Had to go look it up. They made 100 of them between 1982 and 1990, not too many. Lot of firsts for a small biz jet, interesting. That Beech is more my speed, very pretty!! Thanks for the video Kev! 8) --gary
I noticed the right engine start to slow down a bit as you contacted arora
My bucket list plane is a 1946 Ercoupe.
What keeps me subscribing? It's the 771 Bravo Charlie departure anthem:
fuel flows look good
air speeds alive
60
70
80
90
rotate
pump the brakes
gear coming up ...
Hi Kevin, great video, very interesting and kind of scary after that aircraft that became a threat! Couldnt see it thru the go pro. Very eventful approach that time!
That was nerve wracking
Nice flight Kevin. Just cannot get along without an IFR rating. I always found it to be the best rating to have. By the way, what video editing program do you use??
Saberliner 1097 we have 33 this would be a touch and go.
Tower. Negative Saberliner the pattern is full.
What the President?
Tower. No 1BC
Tower. 1BC, You're cleared to land.
Thank you., 1BC
Very very interesting I wonder what Jamie would have been saying lol
This is a great video. Thank you. I peed my pants just watching it.
HA, HA... Our last video we needed to do a 360 for a Gulfstream IV in to Jabara . . . .
The tailcam gives an awesome view! At first, I was like, "That looks like a flight sim."
Seems like it would if been a good day to have your wife with you, she seems to have eagle eyes. Not that you didn't do a great job but it would've been a lot less tension.
Glad that was not me! I need simple!
... mid ‘70s at Little Rock AFB trying to wedge my Aeroclub 172 in between a pattern full of C130s. “Fly 360s in the vicinity of Base Gate. I’ll call your base.”
Nice! I remember taking lessons in a C172 at the Aero Club at McClellan AFB in the mid '90s and will always remember the tower telling me, "Runway 16, cleared to land, caution wake turbulence from the landing C-5 Galaxy." I had an instructor with me and I'm pretty sure we extended out downwind for a while to let it dissipate. But it was pretty neat sharing the pattern with a C-5.
Hey Kevin, really like the tail cam footage. Looks like you got your money's worth on your approach to Aurora this time.
Super tail shots!! Hope you will use them again. I normally pucker up when you take off and pull the gear when one foot off the ground...well, that's the way it looks in the gopro. Rear tie down camera angle shows the truth!
Wow, that’s some nice flying you again are doing, talk about your head on a swivel ❤️
If you were already in the landing sequence why didnt she send the sabre around?
Big planes have priority. It costs them a LOT more to go around than it does for a small piston engine airplane.
@@quinnjim the "big plane" wasn't even landing, just shooting approaches.
Kevin,
Whew 😅, that was intense‼️
Great camera views at the start‼️
Big Saturday coming up- Dawgs eating the Pachyderms‼️ Smart vs Saban‼️
‼️GO DAWGS‼️
Always makes me nervous when they forget to tell you that you’re cleared to land, especially when you’re on short final. Nicely done!
Hey Kevin, thanks for your reply on your last video. I put it to the test on Saturday when I flew from St. George UT over to Page Az. But I still did all I could to hold altitude. Smooth air made it a nice flight and easy to maintain
Never under estimate the 'draw' of that Aurora airport eh? Were they giving something away that day or something? Surprised they didn't start your final out over Lake Michigan.... Interesting 'clear weather' you folks have over there in Illinois... OK, I'll stop.. Great video/flight as always... You handled it all as the true professional that you are and yep, you should have gone with your gut but you were fooled by the ATIS for sure.... Floated that landing a bit but that's ok. You can't grease em all...
Hey Kevin.. Should of had one more cup of coffee at breakfast.. Stay safe.
Awesome! Aurora was really busy! You handled the compounded stresses pretty darn well.
“The Landing Rodeo”
I learned a great deal thanks; watched 4 times each time picked up something new…. The ATC must be worn-out by end of shift 😊
Stay safe and thanks as always for bringing us along for the ride! =] Wow. The professionalism of all involved is inspiring.
Saberliner Jockey should have done a 360, instead of touch & go, allowing you clearance to land safely.
The X-Plane you could not see @ 1 o'clock, same altitude ,gave me the willies. Wonder if he even saw you?
Busy in the cockpit, left seat to say the least. Bet you wished Jamie was in the right seat>>>>>>>>>>>>
Well, that was fun.. great job Kevin, you dealt with all the goings on like a pro. Thanks for the ride.
Like the camera's outside the plane so we can see your take off and landings.
Why didn’t he just make the saber lighter stay outside the pattern until he got some of the aircraft in the pattern down. It seems like he moved everyone out of the way just to allow him in for a possible touch and go.
Another great one! Always good getting some breakfast and enjoying a morning flight.
Sounded like the ATC was busier than a one legged miget in an ass kicking contest!...love the new cam under the tail!..btw,did you get new seats?or recover them?..I don't remember them looking as they do.. stay safe!
This may seem like a dumb question but what did the aircraft say when you first dropped the flaps. It sounded like it said more power.
I did not realise the steps fold up with the gear.... that’s pretty smart 👍🏻👍🏻
When the title said arrival into a busy airport, didn't think you meant Aurora. Great job as always.
tool
Did the engines sound weird on take off or was the GoPro vibrating?
Like the tail cam and the also the cam showing the gear during takeoff and landing.
Jeez... You made me think today was Friday. ;) That was an interesting one! As for the "clear skies" ATIS, Microsoft Flight Sim is like that ALL the time. LOL! - Lauren
Not only are your videos fun to watch, they're actually great for training! If you ever get into ECG, I'll give you the deluxe tour. (USCG Aviation Depot).
Hey, watching from EC. Former HH3F AD3, retired HSC.
Kevin,
It looked like that ATC had his hands full, but as always, you maxed the situation:)
Cheers,
Rik Spector
This video came out on Tuesday, is this the bonus video. We get another on Friday?
Hey Kevin, do your 310 props ever hit the sound barrier? Lot's of single engine Cesna's around here and I here them hit it all the time...
Noob question: why did the controller give you a new squawk code when you got your IFR, even though you were already in the system under flight following?
VFR flight following codes use 0100-0400. When you change to IFR, they pull one out of the computer (which will _not_ be in that block).
Hey Kevin...
Love the channel, Thank You...Great Times!
As a recently retired controller myself, part owner of a Dakota and occasionally crew on a BE20 and a CJ3, have time also in a C402 and C414, BE58 and C310 I am considering buying a C310, doesn’t fly as good as the BE58 but is way more comfortable and... yes, Cool!
Soo Sexy!
Every twin I have flown, the owner wants it to be flown a certain way... engine management stuff. I would LOVE it if you do a episode detailing what why and when you are doing with your mixture, CHT’s, EGT’s and fuel flows... and anything else you can Opine on.
Thanks!
Why not ask the twr to call you base when you couldn't find the high wing experimental? Just wondering...
Probably could have stayed vfr and gone through a hole in the broken layer. I don't know if that would have helped, but you really only went through one cloud that I saw and it wouldn't have been hard to avoid. Better safe than sorry though.
Dang... never seen Aurora so busy. Stressing me out Kevin!
Just putting it out there. Low COVID numbers and mild restrictions in coastal Mississippi. Just sayin...
I enjoyed this flight. I especially respect the cooperation, temperment restraint and cool confidence of our pilot. Another fun hop of vicarious passengerhood. Thanks, Kevin.
Didn’t realise that the boarding steps retracted as well on the 310!!... very nice!!
That was an interesting arrival!.. Keep you on your toes :)... love your plane, never flew a twin engine..210 cessna was the biggest one for me, but usually 182, 172, ect...I had a cessna 140 for kicking around in, wish i had kept it..great video, take care, be watching..
Now that was kind of a very interesting where'd they go ,and when can I lower the gear ,and land this thing ,and that Sabre Liner .......Wheeeeew ....Ahhhhhh Terra Firma . You're the best Kevin, and safety first. I love the tail dragger Beech 18. The later 18 with the nose gear just doesn't look normal to me ,sorry... The original Sky King Songbird Tail dragger T-50 I think . I could be wrong , Then the beautiful 310 Cessna.. Stay safe..
Man... that was a helluva mix of airspeeds in the pattern. Did you log two landings at Aurora lol The BE-18 was GORGEOUS!
LOL same thing happened to me going into Henderson and this is after we can beat up on our desent to the airport. I was not happy at all😞😞
You guys could fly into Alma Michigan and we’ll cook y’all a good dinner.
...aaah. ..the famous and iconic Beech Super G18..made from 1937 to 1969....around 9000 built in Wichita...
A beach 18 is on all most everyones bucket list. That would be a great opportunity for you.
" shouldve gone with my gut"......I know the feeling ! Nice video.
Watching from Scotland and really getting into your videos. As someone who really hasn't a clue how the whole thing works, may I ask what may be a dumb question :-/? Do you get charged for every airport you use? If yes, then is it just a nominal fee or do you get a hefty charge? Hope I'm not being too forward in asking you this. Anyway, keep up the good work - really enjoying them :-)
Some of the larger airports have a landing fee. Any of these smaller airports like the ones you see here are free to land. Hope this helps you. Kevin may still answer your question though 😁
That was an interesting approach into KARR. What did you mean by "the numbers" you had leaving the other airport? Thanks for sharing. non-pilot guy in Ottawa, 🇨🇦
Telling them he knows the active departing runway, the wind speed/direction, and the proper altimeter setting.
An inexperienced pilot would have shat his pants eventually on that arrival. Nice flying, just as well you knew the locale.
Hey Kevin, Beech 18 is on my list too but a ride in a Staggerwing would be the ultimate. Beech sure knows how to build beautiful aircraft.
Beech 18's are true classics. Great planes on par with the 310! Great video, enjoyed the busy adventure.
Hi Kevin great move on the pop up IFR to get down, Take a look at airnav,Com for breakfast at Union Hills Cafe with private owners airport 5LL8 by Dwight which has a Jet stays there. Call owner to get permission to land, 2 block walk; and food was great and we go here often. Runway 9/27 right pattern @ 122.925. Love channel w great trips too. Thanks
I don't know how to land a 310 or any airplane, but ive heard pull power back before rotating to land. My question is for take off, what happens if yo3 already rotated & flying & you have a mishap, what do you do? God forbid that happens to anyone!!! Go Kevin 310
Automated weather observations can really be misleading - bring back human observers!!
Literally one of the best videos on entering a busy airspace I’ve ever seen! Fantastic job Kevin! I was in disbelief that Saberliner did that.
Wow that sounded like Oshkosh...!!
My first airplane was polished. That saved a lot of weight but it seemed I was always polishing. Very pretty. Share your love for the Beech 18. Too bad Beech did their best to kill it, or at least it seemed that way. They did the same to the Starship. Now I understand there is just 1 flying.
Is "floaty" a technical term in aviation? 🤔🤣
Thanks Kevin, enjoyable video to wake up to. That's why I always recommend to students, learn to fly at the busiest airport you can. No better way to handle traffic if it's part of your flying from day 1.
I'm having flashbacks, I worked ARR tower from 1977-1979 and RFD TWR/APC twice 1975-1981. Weekends at ARR often had hourly traffic counts of 100+. I recall having 10 in the RWY 27 pattern when a Lear showed up on final! I often used an overhead pattern to work in fast aircraft like yours. I'm also a PP and flew new Cessna's back from Kansas and around the area for Luminair. Those were the days. Thanks for your videos. FH
The landing was.... I even closed my eyes! at some point. Good that you're ok!
Kevin...I got to fly right seat in a Beech 18 with a buddy of mine, who was flying air freight for Blackhawk Airways out of JVL back in the 70's. We flew all night, carrying parts for GM plants in each city. We went JVL, STL, ORD, STL, JVL. put the bin full of parts into the plane, tied it down, then crawled over that bin of parts into the cockpit! I was amazed how busy these airports were at 2 in the morning....especially ORD!! Great fun pulling that all-nighter!!
I’m always listening for you when flying into/out of ORD. Yesterday (10/20) was the first time I thought you worked us. We you working UA 2777H at 1430? Always look forward to your adventures. I use them to convince my wife we “need” an airplane. 😁
Is the Beach 18 the same plane from the Slaughter video " Fly to the Angel's "???
Holy shit, you had to extend downwind half way to Chicago.
-- @ 0.10, I wanted to put down my camera, climb down off the tail fin, and knock on the rear window to make sure you didn't sneak out for some skydiving during the flight.
