I had a brand new Bolt EUV for about a year before trading it in for an id4. The build quality is night and day. When you close the door on the EUV, you can hear and feel the window shake inside the door. The first thing i said out loud on my test drive of the id4 was, "wow, this thing feels like a tank!" It is so solid and has a great, quiet and planted feel while driving.
For the front door gap, it's what vw/audi doing since many years to avoid rock ships and damages due to raod hazard. It's the same on my 2004 golf, 2009 rabbit, 2009 a4 and 2013 a4. At first it look strange but after 180000miles you can be sure that it really helped.
I have one since March. Overall a great car, although we do have a very minor squeak from the steering column. It is an extremely quiet car, much quieter than my previous BMW.
Hmm... Interesting. Yeah - I have to say out of all of the cars I have owned, this is the quietest...though I haven't owned any luxury cars. I'm pretty happy they were able to get this thing rattle free. I had some rattles with my Model 3 about a week into ownership but we were able to solve them.
I am planning to get one, my question is that I live in a very warm place; is there a way to connect the phone to the car and precondition the A/C to make it cooler?
My last car, a 2018 Audi Q5, had MAJOR electrical issues (that arose around 7k miles and would leave me stranded!), and I was a little nervous about running into problems with my ID.4. While I have a couple glitches here and again with the infotainment system, such as Android Auto not connecting my Spotify correctly every once in a blue moon, I don't worry about the car itself at all. Thanks for your take!
Thanks for the build quality report. It's what I've noticed from VW at least in terms of body alignment and solidity. I have a friend with a Passat and it's ICE and has some maintenance required. But the overall solidity is Audi-like with only a superficial rattle that was fixed. I hope the car stays reliable for you and the biggest thing VW has to work on is the software in this vehicle, getting the speed up and perhaps updating aspects of it. For me, build quality is important. I'm used to a Volvo and that type of body solidity and it's noticeable when I ride in cars what cars feel solid and which ones are less solid. VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche all have a very high level of solidity.
I have never in my life heard a single word about panel gaps in a vehicle until recently now are examining each new car with a magnifying glass trying to find millimeter level gap discrepancies. I don't really get it. Nobody is going to notice such tiny inconsistencies.
The reason is that the major player in EV's is Tesla and they ARE known for serious panel gap issues... So people seem to bring it up in other EV reviews now also. Some of the Tesla's are absolutely HORRIBLE on the panel gaps.. some are perfect. I've seen some with the top of the door so tight it's almost rubbing.. and 8-10mm gaps at the bottom.. on one side of the car.. and the other is perfect. Really wierd stuff.
Panel gaps have long been a measure of vehicle assembly quality. Many of the original Lexus commercials focused on this. As do many of the automotive restoration/build shows. Poor panels gaps may lead to more serious issues like wind noise and water entry from seals that are not sealing correctly as well as problems with doors opening or closing correctly.
@@BrianMiller Exactly, also when you see bad panel gaps and assembly issues it kind of makes you wonder what else might be wrong with the car hidden under the dashboard or some place that you can't get to?
I use panel gap to easily tell an accident car from a non-accident car when buying used. Panel gap is an indication that some internal parts are not properly put together. It’s weird for a brand new car to have panel gaps.
there are small problems: " looks like they don't give a f*** when doing quality control"; Bigger panel gabs mean also more noise, because the air is not flowing as smoothly around the car, theorectically also giving you higher consumption, but by not much of course. But the big one is: If some gap is too wide somewhere there is likely a too narrow one somwhere else. And that is not good, the body panels can rub against each other and grind away the paint, which will lead tto rust. Cars are a bit flexible so the body panels move a tiny bit, but the issue is a bigger problem for doors or the boot, the hood etc... my sisters car (has missaligned panels because it was in an accident before, seller did not tell that...great) has rust exactly on the spot where the door is touching the body when you close the door..
Lol 1st 2min sounds like a Tesla owner getting wowed by quality control. I'll give them props for their software, but they have much to go WRT building a car. The ID4 is on my shortlist. Thx for the review
Haha, thanks for watching. I just wanted to call it out. People told me before I bought the car that VWs were not put together well, so this is just as much about that as it is being a well built EV that's very solid.
Yup we have one and it a great car, we ended up buying 2 and trading in our model y. We were leaning toward the mach e until we saw the ID4. such a great car.
Years ago Audi (I believe) said that they made the trailing edge of the doors just a tiny bit high to reduce wind noise. Otherwise the gap can create a whistle.
Looks great, exactly what I want to hear I'm eagerly awaiting mine. I'm still stuck on the first stage of ordering nearly a month after the initial deposit.
Yeah, things seem to be moving pretty slow right now, unfortunately. However, people are canceling all of the time and production can get better. Fingers crossed you get it early spring!
I have an ID.4 with 4,000 miles. Mine DOES have rattles that are heard when on pebbly roads. The sounds seem to come from the front dash area and from the rear seat area.
Hmm. Interesting. Do you think it is cup holders? If I have anything at all in there you can hear the little hinges rattle, but I don't hear them if the cup is secure.
I am planning to get one, my question is that I live in a very warm place; is there a way to connect the phone to the car and precondition the A/C to make it cooler?
Thanks for your update! I love your interior/exterior color choice. It's exactly what I'd order. I'm of the minority, I also love the white trim from the 1st Edition. Maybe that'll be part of the Gradient Package or some new trim Package for '22. I detest dark interiors. Still waiting to test drive an AWD model before I decide to order one. I'm not sure about Gradient Package, though. Primarily because of the 20" rims eating into range.
Thanks! With the 20 inch rims, you only lose 10 miles, but you definitely still get the 250 miles advertised for them for normal daily driving. Of course, highway driving exacerbates the loss. My preference has been the 19 inch wheels which weren't available, but it depends on whether there is anything in the gradient package that you like.
Given the lead time for orders, now out to summer 2022, if you want the AWD in 2022 you might want to just order one now while waiting for the test drive. I test drove the First Edition and ordered AWD in August, 2021 and just took delivery December 17.
Nice to see it's well put together.. I honestly would not expect anything else. Seems really only Tesla has panel gap issues. 10k miles is not really that much.. I drive that much in 3 months.. I want to see 100k reports... I know it's a new car.. wonder if there are any high mileage ID3's out there.. same drivetrain. That would make me feel a bit more confident.
Agree - I'll of course do a video when we get there, but I wanted to make this one to help assure buyers who are new to EVs. There are all sorts of news stories going on out there and very few of them are "these things are nice to drive and typically, reliable!" so wanted to add a data point, even if it isn't super long yet. Thanks for watching!
Gosh you make me want an Id.4 so badly. Unfortunately in Canada we ha e had no deliveries of them yet. I am putting my name in for two of them. Currently have a Tesla Model Y that I will be trading in or selling.
For me, it's 3 things: one pedal driving (I have a rotated hip from an accident and it's a slight numb pain to hold my foot on the brake), the sound system could be a little better, but we listen to podcasts on road trips and things and you can hear voiced pretty crystal clear, music just doesnt have as much depth as high end systems, I just wish it was an option and the CPU having a little more processing power so it could play netflix/hulu while charging. :)
One pedal driving more than 360⁰ camera most of them can be off for some reason or another even not clear enough. Just give me one pedal driving to a complete stop.
I'm curious to know what the three fluid reservoirs are for under the hood. I only have wiper fluid on my Tesla. I've got an ID4 on order so I've been enjoying your videos on them and have been learning a lot.
Thank you! Oh dang, that is crazy! I would say hold strong until at least the end of Spring. Who knows what can happen with the car market by then. Maybe you will get lucky! It is a great car is going to be worth your time. :)
Just heard on CNBC they're sold out for 2022 but people can still put in their orders to get in line for whenever Chattanooga gets up and running at full speed to catch up.
Ordered mine in Netherlands in Jan 2021, took delivery a few weeks ago in December. Long wait, it kept being pushed back. But very happy with the car now that I have it.
any problems with tailight buldge? I have seen a lot of Id4's with that issue. I really hope it is solid. I have one on order, but looking at a Toyota BZ4x as well.
No - I just looked that up and have seen nothing like that and we live somewhere very hot most of the year. Perhaps when I took it in for the 30 day or 10,000 mile service check they addressed that and didn't say anything. They didn't give us any paperwork on what they looked at or anything like that. Otherwise, yeah it looks good to me!
Glad to see you've had a great experience.. mine has been in the shop for 7 weeks (and counting) for a battery issue where they had to replace several modules. I really like the car but not sure I'll be able to trust it again.. not sure if I'll go the buyback route yet or not.. especially since there is nothing readily available for me to buy..
how was your experience with the charging on long trips!? I have seen videos of the UI recommending a 10 hour charging stop on a 3 hour trip?!! Has VW upgraded the User Interface and the Charging Software? Can you look up the version of the UI that is installed on your Car and report it here?
Sorry for the delayed response! You cannot use VW's navigation for road trips it's horrible. Instead, you must use an app called "A Better Route Planner" or similar to manually input the route and your starting charge etc. It's very clunky but doable. We have still not received any update to the ID4 since we purchased back in April, therefore, we are still on the initial software "0792" which is equates to "version 2.1". We received information (email) from VW on the next update, version 2.3, but it was never released.
Have had a 1st since last June. i do hear a few squeaks around the windshield on cold northeastern days. I expected to hear more road noise having 2 Minis with Runflats. Can someone explain the inside door handles because I'm not sure if the double pull on the handles is a new feature or design flaw?
You don’t double-pull them to open. Do you know how you reach down to open some vehicles hatchbacks, and it’s a small rubber covered electric switch that you pull? That’s how the door handles open on this, and it feels pretty natural after the first couple times.
i have 5000km on mine and when I'm driving over rough surface there's rattles coming from the rear hatch area and the infotainment center its starting to annoy me i traded in 3 year old bmw 320d and I'm begging to regret it
I drove one of these a couple days ago, a 1st Edition (only demo in stock at the dealer). I am a Mustang Mach-E owner with a second one on order and I want to drive some comparable cars before I take delivery. It's a nice car. Gonna go drive a Polestar 2 today if I can. Good review, both on the car specifically and as a primer for new EV buyers. Thanks for your work.
Thank you. I like the Mach E also! However, the ID4 came first and the dealer did not try any funny business with price. Unfortunately, the Ford dealer was adding markup. But we bought the ID4 before attempting to haggle. That said, would love to get a Mach E when things calm down with the market issues. Congrats on your new car!
Polestar test drives are apparently pretty hard to get. Can't just shoot up to the dealership, have to sign up online and wait to be scheduled for an "event". Not encouraging. Compared with the relative sparsity of dealerships, it gives one pause about the overall quality of the purchase/ownership experience.
I agree, but there are a lot of stories (and concerns) about EV reliability so I'm just hoping to add a data point as I go along to help ease potential owners. I have no issues with the paint quality at all!
What I want to know is: has VW put old tech in this EV that will render it substandard after a few years? My VW e-Golf is only 6 years old and VW just sent out letters saying that the VW Car-Net service is closing for my car because it doesn't want to continue to support 3G any more. Gee, thanks so much VW.
One pedal driving would have made sense. Not sure why they chose to go another route. They claim it's because their implementation is more efficient. But the comfort and convenience of one pedal driving is going to be a must in the next 5 years.
@@evhelphub it is a matter of Taste...I personally hate one paddel driving. Even on my PHEV Passat GTE I do not use the B Mode at all, since I do not like to keep my foot down just to keep the speed instead of just coasting. And another factor ist the "wife factor"...my wife told me to switch this off, since the breaking is that unusual that she got seasick as passenger
"build quality", well it is no longer just plastic, software should have been reviewed much deeper - it is too laggy for me. How long does it take from open the door til the car rolls? And how much did you pay for maintenance? It so unfair that in Norway I have to pay for check of something that is "guaranteed".
VW has a nasty habit in pushing products onto the market, which have not been fully tested/developed yet. Just wait a couple of years and then the EV's from VW will hopefully give less trouble... (and have a lower salesprice!).
@@evhelphubWHAT!! Why is that? Also can you change it to be even on your next set? That's crazy! But hey I'm looking to get the 19' for the range. I hope they don't do that trick on that version of the pro s.
so there are reliability issues, software and infotainment. shouldnt be minimized its a production car not a prototype. volvo got lots of heat for its poorly performing software and knocked it down a few notches on reliability score. Nonetheless nice option if looking for an ev. i like the fact this car looks 99% like a traditional car without crazy design features.
Reliability in the sense that, the car always turns on and always drives and has never failed when driving or charging. I think that's important. Yes, the infotainment system isn't amazing, but that doesn't make it so the car can't be driven which is the most important thing to me. I had a Mazda 3 before this and the infotainment screen on that thing was horrible, but I had it for 5+ years and over 150k miles and never once did it breakdown, so I would use that as the equivalent of being "reliable" in this case - even with software issues.
@@evhelphub That the correct thing to look in a car. Ever since Tesla arrived people get hang up on their Infotainment systems. Those things aren't what makes a good car. Its nice to have a non laggy navigation system. But in the scope of things its way more important to have a car that drives well, doesn't break down, has good safety features and doesn't cost a lot of maintenance. And yes I had a Mazda 3 as well and recently upgraded to the new Mazda 3 because it delivered so much on being a god car that I just got then next one. And guess what the infotainment system got better as well. It is still not a fancy thing but it is fast and does all things you need it for in a easy to use way that doesn't endanger you while you drive like for example a Tesla with its all touch screen interface does.😀
Beg to differ with you..... id4 owner from 2021...... software is very poor. Failed to start at least twice and had to let sitting for at least 15 minutes so the car would go to "sleep." Sporadic issues with car software...... randomly while driving, the car's sensors or safety equipment will report failures and stop working. Resets on the car seem to resolve it. Random GPS quirkiness will occur where the gps will forget where it's at and report you somewhere else entirely. Guess what? All of these problems, others have to. What's vw doing to fix it? Nothing. I've talked to VW corporate at least 6 times. They simply DO NOT care.
the technology, battery types and infotainment are outdated throughout the VW concert. the only thing VW can do is make a nice car. but all that you can not see is obsolete.
Lol this video shouldn't even exist..we all know build quality problems don't usually show up on German made cars..they only show up on American made cars...mhmm (Tesla)
Plastic keeps weight down. Some of the quality of plastics is more perceived than anything else but we like soft-touch better than hard and scratchy. EVs certainly need lightweight materials.

Does your car make any braking noise when you slow down the car to a full stop?
When I apply the brakes I can often hear them, especially when coming to a full stop. Nothing too unusual, however.
Is the screen laggy? That seems to be everyone’s big complaint!
Not if you got the latest updates......
You did not mention the software or self driving
I'll make a separate video on these things - it is a bit too much to put in one video.
insurance... can u share with us how much yearly premium i am expected to pay?
170$ monthly
The car is too new to judge reliability. Build quality is impressive. How is the paint finish? My XC40 Recharge has too much orange peel.
Gee, thanks so much VW.
p.s. ID.4 is probably a great car, though I would want stronger regen.
The tail light doesn't align with left side fender though.
What part of the video do you see this? I can take a look and see if it is just the camera or lighting.
@@evhelphub @8:00 , you can see the tail light is slightly higher on the hatch side than the fender side.
Wait you don't rotate your tires?
Ah - meant to mention in the video: the tires cannot be rotated, the two in the back are larger than the front. I asked VW directly.
Volvo's Android system? The Android system definitely is buggy and not implemented completely. It's much better in the Polestar 2.
Tesla can't get their act together with major gaps everywhere imagine how bad quality they are .
Not enough techs to handle recalls.

the technology, battery types and infotainment are outdated throughout the VW concert. the only thing VW can do is make a nice car. but all that you can not see is obsolete.
Lol this video shouldn't even exist..we all know build quality problems don't usually show up on German made cars..they only show up on American made cars...mhmm (Tesla)
Plastic fantastic.
Yeah, I'd like to see them include more soft touch plastic next go around.
Plastic keeps weight down. Some of the quality of plastics is more perceived than anything else but we like soft-touch better than hard and scratchy. EVs certainly need lightweight materials.
Downvoted for misleading clickbait title.
