Sometimes, when an episode diverts from the usual formula like that, it means that a writer has a good idea. Not always, but it can create some of the best episodes.
For example, two of my favourite episodes of MASH are the one where its a news documentary about the 4077th, and the one where its entirely from the first-person view of a patient.

It’s funny, so many people say that it’s such a great episode but honestly, I really didn’t like it. I didn’t like that they strayed so far from the format of the show. I don’t mind shows being innovative but this episode didn’t sit well with me. It’s one of my least favourite of the entire series, perhaps even my least favourite, with perhaps the last episode of season 20 being worse.

To recap, McCoy, Kincaid, Briscoe and Curtis witness an execution. Van Buren rightfully declines. At a neighborhood bar,, Mccoy recounts his upbringing by his NYPD father, which was not all sunshine. Curtis, after an early end of his day at the precinct, meets a young grad student who he keeps himself company at her home while his wife calls. Briscoe's lunch with one of the daughters is cordial despite the revelations of his abandoning their family. And as Kincaid tries to make sense of witnessing the execution, she contemplates her life and career visiting her step-dad and visiting with Van Buren.
Despite not dealing with a single case through the episode, Aftershock is the best Law & Order episode.

This is very sad at the end when a car hit them both.
Could I ask that maybe in the future that you release opening clip when tow police officers pull a car over and ask the driver for his licence when one of the officers go to look at the back off he notices something then he see the driver pulls a gun out and was about to shot his partner but the police officer at the back shot the driver dead then open the back of the car and find a body

How Ironic can it get? Claire Kincaid driving a drunk Detective Lennie Briscoe home, got T-Boned and killed by A Drunk Driver.
The incident that made Briscoe clean and sober as he forever blamed himself for Kincaid’s death.

A tough subject and episode, but people always have something to say about capital punishment until it happens to them. Some people have NO remorse, and others believe that justice is served.

I must be missing something. For me, this was one of the worst episodes of the entire series. However, I must say that a LOT of people hold this episode in very high regard. This is entirely subjective so I totally get that what’s the best episode to me will be different from any other person and that my opinion is very different from a great many people. To me, the episode just doesn’t speak. I don’t like that they strayed so far from the format of the show and dealt with the private lives of the characters. Honestly, I didn’t really care about their upbringing or their family lives. I liked when those aspects were interspersed within a normal episode (ex.: Curtis’ wife’s MS) but showcasing them in a single episode, for me, wasn’t a good call. I’m not sure what everyone sees in this episode and I could very well be missing the point but I consider this a bad episode. Maybe someone can explain it to me.
