Dr. Haas, played brilliantly by the late Jan Maxwell, was one of L&O's more memorable villains. Cloaking her greed in medical feminism was a unique twist and McCoy was spot on when he told Claire that the only reason she objected to prosecuting Haas was because Claire couldn't accept that a woman could do the things Haas did to another woman.
Jan Maxwell sadly and ironically died of breast cancer.
She played a corrupt judge in a later episode. Another memorable performance and story.
@@GoGreen1977 Which ep was that, if you could tell me? I'm genuinely curious.
@dmadd4643 s14e7 "Floater": she's Divorce Court Judge Alexander, who takes kickbacks from lawyers, then issues rulings so favorable that her co-conspirators' clients can laugh about how they were illegally overcharged for their services; a court employee who caught her rich husband cheating (he's initially arrested for murder, but the case starts to quietly unravel after police and hospital records confirm his claim that her "scuffle" injuries were sustained in a car accident a few days earlier) uncovers the scheme, threatens to blow the whistle if they don't her case, and gets into an argument with Judge Alexander which turns into a homicide when the woman drowns in the Hudson.
Yea, feminist tend to be full of themselves and stupid like that. Sounds about right.
It's noteworthy that when Dr. Haas is asked about a patient of hers who died, she cares more about sorting through her mail. A very nice touch by the writers and director.
“Try various cemeteries, they’re all dead”
*Awkwardly puts notebook away*
LMAO
😂😂well it was the truth ! Dr Donothing killed them
Old L&O had such a way with dialogue!
"So he represented me. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?"
"If it was part of a scheme to defraud the courts, you're going to wish you were in China!"
Jesus. She’s like the fireflies in loU. But at least it was the post apocalypse and they were desperate to find a cure. Didn’t have harvest people’s brains. But still
Doctors and nurses are very, very good at being deadpan snarkers. And they can even do it while sounding as pleasant as a church pastor greeting folks.
Everyone cashed in their chips.
My mom got “the big C”. It was minimal, noninvasive, no symptoms. She still got a full mastectomy, which ended up being a very good thing because they found a two little sneaky tumors hiding out undetected, one of them actually WAS invasive. My mom doesn’t miss her chest in the slightest, she actually loves that she can wear smaller shirts now, and that there is less back pain and neck strain from the weight. I know not everyone is like this, and would definitely feel insecure if something about their body changed so quickly, but the moral I’m trying to say is that sometimes change is worth it. If my mom got a lumpectomy, or waited longer, the invasive tumor that was undetected by scans would’ve grown bigger and possibly spread to other parts of her chest. Recovery sucks, but it’s the tiniest fraction compared to how much life you could live afterwards.
I hope your mom is still doing well! I’m pretty sure I would have done the same thing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
When I had my hysterectomy, my doctor suggested a DNA test for mutations. Turns out, I have a genetic mutation that gives me a 50/50 odds of developing breast cancer. And provided nearly every menopausal woman in my family developed breast cancer, I'm more likely than not. But it does help get me a pre-emptive mastectomy covered by insurance.
That's pretty delusional and not minimal or "non-invasive" at all.
@@kishascape The cancer that they found originally WAS non-invasive, meaning it wasn't a cancer that was going to spread. The surgery and recover were invasive and definitely not minimal, but that's par for the course. Are you saying I'm delusional or the doctors, I can't tell, sorry😂

I really miss this version of Law & Order. Mike and Lennie were my all-time favorite detective duo.
Mine too :( I heard they got rid of Mike because his and Lennie's personalities were too similar and they thought it would be boring to the viewers
That captain lady also ended up with Cancer later on in the series too. The boss guy man told her to be more careful with weed use so she doesn't get caught and gave her the number of a good supplier he uses.

She actually got the big "C" at he end of the series. She ended up beating it on the finale.
I was holding my breath when she got that call

Man, this was *SUCH* a good era of the OG Law and Order.
This is, straight up, one of the very best episodes of this show. Jack McCoy's premiere. He showed up in fine style.
It was never one of my favorites. The opening scene, however, was.
I suppose that's why I place it so low as it never seemed to live up to that opening.
Sadly, the actress who played Dr Hass, Jan Maxwell, ended up dying from breast cancer in 2018 at the age of 61.
She was on L&O 4 times, each as a different character.
So 😂
Had a dear friend who went through breast cancer treatment. Years later they found stage four bone cancer. She chose to do nothing but enjoy the time left with her husband and kids because there was only prolonging the inevitable while being too sick to do anything in life. They traveled as a family, went to sport events with the kids and she had a couple of terrible months at the end but not a year or more too sick to travel with her sons hockey team or going to her daughters dance auditions.
Good mother she was. It's too bad about her family though. I'm betting they would do anything to hug her at least one more time.
My Aunt is going through the same thing, though its lung cancer in her case (not smoking related, but still terrible). She's on her last legs now - we're probably going to be saying goodbye within a month or so.
This will be the 4th member of the family we've lost to cancer. It's truly an insidious disease.
@@dmadd4643 So sorry to hear that, dmadd. Multiple members of my extended family have died of cancer as well.
My grandfather died of cancer when I was two-years-old. He was only fifty and had a twelve-year-old daughter. It's likely that his cancer was a result of his service in Vietnam and his exposure there to Monsanto's infamous Agent Orange. He was diagnosed and dead within a month's time.
My uncle lived through lung cancer ten years after surviving a major stroke, but less than two years after he went into remission he caught a bad case of the flu, which turned into bronchitis and then pneumonia. He'd had a lobe of a lung removed to fight the cancer and with his reduced lung capacity he didn't make it, dying while in the hospital hooked up to oxygen and a nebulizer. The cancer didn't technically kill him, but it might as well have.
My mom passed away 7 years ago from cancer
Dr. Rodgers: "This ain't a homicide."
Lennie Briscoe: "Okay, but we still have 23 minutes left in the episode..."
Claire Kincaid: "Let's go get milkshakes!!"
Almost lol'd thinking about the scene playing out that way. 😂
“More coffee?”
“Another cup of that, they can autopsy me.”
Ironic the Lieutenant's statements since later on, after Lenny died, she DID get cancer.. and she kept working.
The words "natural" and "organic" are so abused, you might as well ignore any references to them. Almost all radioactive isotopes are "natural" aka not man made. The same is true of many deadly plant based poisons, which technically are also organic, although not in the chemistry sense.
The people who also use these terms also leave out some natural treatments from their term. They complain about chemo being 'unnatural', but conveniently leave out common chemo drugs such as paclitaxol which is made from tree bark, and also notorious for the bone and joint aches for a year or so after.
Cat pee is natural and organic.
So is tobacco :/
A bunch of people pushing organic plant based products- when i tell them Im allergic to x y & z they say"but it's natural"... people are allergic to various plants and pollens etc etc.
Lots of snark in this episode. Loved the Logan and Briscoe duo. The doctor was a quack ripping off desperate women.
I remember the episode. This 'doctor' who was treating her was a quack. Granted, being a female, I certainly wouldn't want a mastectomy if I could 'safely' prevent it. But given the choice of living or dying, I would definitely choose life. Which would probably mean having a nasty, but necessary surgery.
Gotta love Lenny:
*"Another cup of that they can autopsy me."* ...😁😅😂

Eventually Capt Van Buren did indeed battle cancer.
The one thing I can't stand about Law & Order.... every. single. witness. they. interview. is too busy to stand there and talk. They all have to be doing something else, be busy with other things. Two cops show up asking you questions and flashing a badge? Hang on, I have to keep stocking my bodega while I keep walking past you and talking out the back of my head. Hang on, I really need to check my mail, oh my god my life is so busy. Sure, I'll answer some questions about a murde-- Jimmy, stop running through the hall and get into the classroom while I talk to police officers right where everyone can see and hear me!
The moment someone stops, faces the detectives and gives them undivided attention... it's like a facial tell from LA Noire. Guilty, or hiding something.
It's NYC. You ever had to deal with the cops there?? Trust me. You WANT to be doing something other than looking at (and smelling them).
@@LSSYLondon Born and raised in NYC. And while the detective corps had their fair share of hairbags I never saw anyone who couldn't stand still for 3 minutes to answer a few questions. I'm sure it happens, but L&O is literally every single time.
If I had to guess, I'd say the show's producers were watching old Dragnet episodes and how painfully boring those interview scenes were, and they were determined to do anything to make it seem more dynamic... any excuse to move the camera around.
Yeah, but it makes it more dynamic to watch.
They do that because it’s more interesting than watching a bunch of people stand around and talk. Nothing is more boring than that. Watch some shitty movies. What do they always have their actors do? You guessed it, they stand around and talk. That’s death on screen.
@@TheGeorgeD13 Having the detectives follow someone around while they casually discuss a crime while talking over their shoulder is not only jarringly unrealistic, it is (especially in terms of this show) entirely predictable. It's "dynamic" in name only, since what they're doing usually has no bearing on anything except as a hamfisted visual cue as to their backstory.
Good scenes in good movies rivet you with the quality of the acting and the dialogue... not the fact that the players are constantly fidgeting and trying to look busy.
Jill Hennessy was so beautiful
And her hair on this series was always so perfect. I aspired, as a kid, to have that the curl in my hair (when I had a shoulder length bob) to achieve that level of perfection... but could never achieve it.
Yes. Out of all the female ADA's on the show, I liked her the best. They were all good but Jill was my favorite.

I wish Rogers had had more screen time. She was a cool character.

Her role was bigger on L&O: Criminal Intent
I enjoyed her eventually being at odds with Robert Goren. On L&O C.I.
It was a joy when she was a part-timer on three shows at the same time. Must have been wonderful for her bank account too.
My family is a 'chop them off i am still a woman' type. If the husband has an issue with you losing your breast than he doesn't love you for you but for the boobs. My dad already tole my mom that he would demand that she get them removed as while he loves that part of her body, he loves her more and would rather have her then the boobs.
Logans suit combo here i love, the green suit with purple tie. The green suit works amazing on him
There was a similar case in Daytona years ago where the coroner was found to be responsible for multiple death certificates being intentionally botched. Murders were being ruled suicides, etc. He was found to be working directly for the police departments and the insurance agencies and the suspect of a murder. A body was moved to Georgia where the true cause of death was listed. The corner met his death as well and probably in a similar manner as some of the victims that ended up on his examine table. Be very, very careful of a first read and ALWAYS hire an independent lab. One is often surprised at what they actually find when you allow the “blinders” to come off. My comment is based on very real historical facts. A trace of cyanide without a cause of it being in the blood should serve as a red flag. Someone should be checking for other cases that have presented with the same/or similar levels within their bloodstream.
What's disturbing is how often when the ME finds something they try to shut them up. Look at what happened to Dr. Bennet Omalu after he tried to warn people of CTE and the NFL.
Unfortunately later the lieutenant actually had breast cancer in real life but she did Beat It
Wish the Jerry Orbach years were available on iTunes!
