Drummer Roger Hawkins passed just a couple weeks ago, He was a Muscle Shoals legend who played on some great classic hits, He played a nice steady rhythm here, Nothing flashy or complicated, Just simple and direct.
How cool! I got to play jazz flute behind Chris Wood when he was on the sax! I think I MIGHT have been qualified to carry his second-hand reed in a silk pillow. So talented, so gifted, so much, so young his passing! Well, he lives as a living spirit for me, anyway. I taught myself jazz flute and it was Chris Wood who I did then and now use as inspiration.
@beaverteeth92 David Hood was playing bass on that gig. You can also see Roger Hawkins on drums. It's the same rhythm section as on "Traffic on the Road" from the following year.
LOL i do this all the time... i cant leave till whatever song im listening to is over ! lol.... as long as its not like "Child in Time" or "Stairway"... those are too long and id def. be late !!
I'm 61. I thought they were great and fabulous in 1970. I appreciate them more now. I think this song is about the Freedom Riders of the early 60's. I didn't realize that in 1970. I was a stupid 18 year old.
A lot us 18 year olds were stupid/very naive that time so don't feel bad. Life was just plain simple, easy and uninfomed yet we grew up so much stronger to face adversary cos we found our own way to do it. We are grateful to have the opportunity to appreciate even the words and the music now. Please keep exposing your younger family to this amazing and awesome era. Peace and love you all stacks! ;*)
the best version of this song .. and a rare one with Steve on B3.. I much prefer this to any version with him on piano.. also love the way he sings the title twice.. way better than the studio version!
Actually it's Rebop Kwaku Baah on bongos. Story goes he was fired on the 1974 tour for singing throughout but then kept turning up so they kept him on!
I was at this show with a bunch of my buddies...all of us blazing away on LSD! It was a great show! We caught Traffic every time that they came in to town!
DEFINITIVAMENTE TREMENDO VOCALISTA ME GUSTA SU GRUPO TRAFFI ES UN ESTILO TIPO YAS POR MOMENTO LIGADO CON ROCK ESTA CANCION MUY BUEN GRUPO creo año 1970
I think this band onstage were the tightest ever....Steve Winwood guides the band through this one like a conductor for an orchestra, not to mention he plays 4 instruments in this concert...Chris Wood was the best goddamn flutist, saxophones, and piano/organ player at the time, and lemme tell you that is a friggin huge list of masters to top. Capaldi was the swaying, playing, and lava lamp flowing percussionist, drummer, teeter tottering rocker ever, doing his huge bit to perfection. And Rebop, what more can I say? Those who know the name can dig what I'm getting at....think there was any pressure on the bassist and drummer, when they truly took a look around them that first night on stage, with all that I just stated? Call me weird, but the 'new' Traffic was just as kick ass as the OG Traffic line up, just a bit more mellow easing into the 70s...Thank you God for this gathering of musicians
How is that sax miked? There's a thin cord mounted at the reed almost. Wouldn't think you could get a good sound that way.. I always loved Steve's Hammond work.. Always wished somehow he would have been the guy in YES rather than Rick Wakeman..
saw 576 views of same song, felt left behind. this is a great heavily played tune. Love Steve and his versatile musicianship .. he keeps kickin for us, we must do the same for him
I was set to see the show,I got busted 4 days before they played in S.M. Thank God for this youtube thing and all uploads,,,,,,,THX to all who did this....
@freedumb2003 Um, I meant just now I was playing behind him to the YT sounds. I could never have played at that level, since I was young then and now am too old.
Never mind the Traffic version from Woodstock 94.. This is REAL DEAL here... Winwood/Capaldi/Wood/Reboop!! Jesus Christ I'm 68 & ONLY NOW seeing this Gem Of a Video from 72 for FIRST TIME!!@@
I wish it were "Freedom Writer!"...even if a few words that were written stealth; cryptic!...(but who pays a toll wen oui is just a hitchhiker!)...Rock n Roll!
I believe it to be one of the first "Barcus-Berry" pick-ups and was fitted to the mouthpiece. (a transducer unit) Brass instruments were fitted in like manner, with the pick-up transducer installed to the mouthpiece, and, by God, it WORKED !
john dubé Strange but not strange. I also associate this song with this time ( Nov. 4, 2017 ) of year. More specifically a certain rural area/region where someone I know used to live. Wonder if writing this will make "something happen" ????
I love Chris Wood’s flute and sax in Traffics music. It gives their music a real magical edge.
Stevie Winwood, the most versatile musician on this or any planet.
Drummer Roger Hawkins passed just a couple weeks ago, He was a Muscle Shoals legend who played on some great classic hits, He played a nice steady rhythm here, Nothing flashy or complicated, Just simple and direct.
Jon Dickman Didn't know that. Wonderful drummer. R.I.P Roger! Thank you for the music.
Smooth and steady, doesn't even look like he's moving, fluidity of a smooth running creek...
Look at that beautiful Acoustic amp with the big horn!! Don’t see those anymore...🔊
As usual Steve Winwood is burning up that Hammond B3 ! Best jazz and rock organ ever .
Patrick Rogers He is great but he doesn't equal Ray Manzarek.

true musicians completely immersed in their music. Flute in rock and roll proves it

Yes, Mussel Shoals rhythm section. I was at the SF show, same year.
So cool! Anyone who disagrees is just a fool. Steve Winwood is awesome.
I remember that I wouldn't buy a CD player until Traffic was available on CD.
This the type of song that will have U late 4 work while listening to it @ 8:45am on the parking lot.
LOL i do this all the time... i cant leave till whatever song im listening to is over ! lol.... as long as its not like "Child in Time" or "Stairway"... those are too long and id def. be late !!

Chris Wood was so great . Super talented & waaaaay underestimated . Such a loss .
DO CACETE ESSA BANDA, ESSA MÚSICA É UMA ODE. MISTURA DE ROCK, SWING, PROGRESSIVO ETC, ETC E ETC.
That's awesome...the kind of music that makes me wish I was born 30 years earlier!
the percussionist's name is Rebop Kwaku Bah, this entire band was super tight, Winwood, Jim Capaldi, Barry Beckett, Chris Wood. Enjoy it!
TRULY AWESOME manipulation of Hammond drawbars. And I'll pay top dollar for the shirt that Steve's wearing in this!
What a time in our history, as humans everything changed. I'm glad to be part of that era.
no kiddin..for the folks who lived it, much more memorable
Before mtv
And there you have the genius of Mr. STEVE WINWOOD
@roserosepat this and all music will continue to live on so long as people continue to share treats like this over the internet
Fu*king Chris Wood!... God Rest his Talented ass !

That’s a shame as the studio version is the hillocks man
the best version of this song .. and a rare one with Steve on B3.. I much prefer this to any version with him on piano.. also love the way he sings the title twice.. way better than the studio version!

Remi Kabaka also played with Stevie and Jimi and the Stones.
Good he stayed ,and they had the common sense to keep him.Really great player.
Awesome song. John Barleycorn is one of my favorite albums.
I was at this show with a bunch of my buddies...all of us blazing away on LSD! It was a great show! We caught Traffic every time that they came in to town!

Surprised at all the green they wore then.I know avocado and gold were popular in the early '70's,but it seemed to be EVERYWHERE then. Orange, too.
@freedumb2003
Um, I meant just now I was playing behind him to the YT sounds. I could never have played at that level, since I was young then and now am too old.
Steve and Chris=Traffic!

who are the bass player and drummer?
Käsittämättömän Hyvää Musiikkia!!
More level on the voice and flute mics was needed ! Apart from that great set they played so good 😊
Top 5 of all. Time. A kobe with a guitar should be. 3 time. R N. Rolln. Hall-of-fame.

By the time you hear that siren sound
Then your soul is in the lost and found
For-ever
Would be required listening for today's youth,so they do NOT get in trouble. Or,sadly ,your soul is in the lost and found forever.
I wish it were "Freedom Writer!"...even if a few words that were written stealth; cryptic!...(but who pays a toll wen oui is just a hitchhiker!)...Rock n Roll!
How unbelievably talented is Steve Winwood...???
When was this? 1980? I remember this music being played around that time,Chris Wood dead by 1983.
1972
Surprised Chris wood doesn't have a Selmer in his hands.
I always remember this song about this time of year!!!...:)O(:..
Charles Chandler interesting comment I relate to
I believe it to be one of the first "Barcus-Berry" pick-ups and was fitted to the mouthpiece. (a transducer unit) Brass instruments were fitted in like manner, with the pick-up transducer installed to the mouthpiece, and, by God, it WORKED !
If anyone disliked this, they would have to not like music. Just awesome concert and wish to thank all responsible for having it on here.

where is dave mason?
In and out of Traffic like a revolving door. My guess his ego couldn’t take being second fiddle to Steve Winwood.
Who is on drums?
Roger Hawkins: American drummer best known for playing as part of the studio backing band known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section of Alabama...
and Aretha Franklin. etc.@@julianozain
That is just soooo good
