Welcome to the addicti... I mean hobby! I've got a few corrections:
1. Membrane keyboards use rubber or silicone, not plastic
2. Linear switches do *not* actuate at the bottom, basically no keys do. Most actuate half way down at 2 mm.
3. (Not much of a correction, but still) While Cherry MX might be the most famous, they are not considered the best.
4. That would be a 95% keyboard.
5. The sound of that keyboard is not a click. Clicks are generated by the switch using a click-bar or click-jacket. That sound is considered a bottom out sound. Some call it a clack.
Other than that, good video, hope to see you dive deeper into the rabbithole! :)
Thank you! This is very helpful!
Yep. Couldn't have said it better myself. It's an addiction. Er. Hobby. So, up until a few years ago, Cherry MX was really the only player in the game. There were a few competitors, but the good ones were limited to only one brand of peripheral (think Razer) or they were Cherry MX clones that were slightly better than cheap knockoffs. Even though Cherry MX's patent expired back in the 80's, it wasn't until about 5-6 years ago that other companies started to really compete well with them. In 2000, Gateron switches came out and over the past few years have become more of a go-to for enthusiasts than Cherry MX. In 2014, Logitech released their Romer-G switches that are quickly becoming a favorite for enthusiasts. My next keyboard will probably end up being something with Gateron Browns in them.
@@NateNakao Take a good thicc look at Zilent V2 switches, man. Suuper tactile and smooth, without a click!
Hey, have you used Anne Pro 2? How does this one compare to it? Other than the size, of course?
Also, do you know what they mean about scratchiness in Cherry MX? Will Red / Pink have less of it than Brown?
once you go clack, you never go back
Starting to understand why
Cherry MX Blue useers b like
@@bnorrish chiclet is faster I'll give that. I type on a very light keyboard so I have a similar experience
One correction: Most mechanical keyboard switches, linear included, don't actuate when you press them all the way down.
Thanks! I was also corrected in another comment. My head is still spinning from all the info.
Michael Soledad I had to watch your video based on the title alone. It was a reminder to me that generations have come along after me that have never used a mechanical keyboard. I learned to type on a typewriter, not an electric, but an old mechanical Underwood. I’m a dinosaur to you. 😂
They're amazing. I won a brand new mechanical keyboards a couple of years back. I can say I love it and would never do back to a membrane keyboard.
These vids... such quality!
I have just went back to mechanical keyboards my confident and typing speed went up dramatically because I could feel each button better with more precision. I was already a fast typer but now I get so much done and I will never go back. I only remember them when I was little but never typed that much and did not care. I wish I came down this rabbit hole a lot sooner than this year.
I read a year ago somewhere (I don't remember where, maybe Reddit) you can email the company to buy/request a command and option key for the Mac.
Michael, your channel is one of my favorites! Love the aesthetics and your reviews! Keep it up my friend! :)
I appreciate that! 😊🙏🏼
Love your new lighting setup! opened YT just in time for your vid!
Thank you! 😊
Love the broll man!! Keep it up. Im happy youre doing tech like I once told you too👀
Haha, thanks dude! Not as good yours though! 😆
Nice video! I got so much inspiration out of your workspace tour.. you deserve so much more audience than you already have.. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much!
such a quality video, thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!
Yeah I love these keyboards they are the best
Seriously considering getting myself the "slim" mech-keyboard the Logitech G915...
As a person who types a lot and always looks for the Laptop keyboard experience, the G915 feels like the first real option for me.
It's also full-sized, so no issues with getting used to keyboard layout.
Maybe try to get your hands on one of these too! Would love to hear your thoughts about it.
If i do end up getting one ill be sure to share my thoughts 👍🏼
The intro did it for me. Jammed my thumb slamming on subscribe button. Great quality editing and verbal content.
Haha! Thank you and welcome!
Super cool review man 💪glad to see you liking it and seeing how big of a rabbit hole it is lol
Haha, that rabbit hole sure took a chunk out of my day. Thank you!
@@MichaelSoledad I guess we will see if you stick with it and how far down the rabbit hole you go 😅 if you get a chance definitely check out other switches! 👍
Nice. I ordered my first one in the last few days. Am fascinated by the scene but also a little scared!
Nice!
I know what you mean. It’s a bit intimidating and confusing but I think you’ll enjoy it.
@@MichaelSoledad Go check out Taeha Types on Twitch/RUclips if you want to see peak Mech keyboard
This is epic
I’m almost ready to dive in that rabbit hole since I just went back to coding ! Also couldn’t help but to recognise the music from one of Daniel Schiffer’s video about the pizza ad I think. Anyway really like your work, specially love your desk setups !
Thanks so much! I use epidemic sound for my music so I'm guessing Daniel does the same lol
@@MichaelSoledad He sure does, anyway keep up the great work man !
From someone who used mechanicals most of my life, and just the past few years became exclusive with scissors, now I hate it when it's not close to a magic keyboard.
I’ve recently switched to mechanical keyboards for my WFH set-up, but still prefer my Apple keyboard however I still refuse to connect my Apple keyboard to a PC.
I like the clickiness, but I hate the key travel, which is why I still prefer my Apple keyboard.
IT'S A TRAP!!!
...but it's worth it ;)
I can see why lol
You take B Roll serious, love the quality of your videos 👌
Thank you, David! 😊
This is a really deep rabbit hole :) I just jumped into it a few weeks ago
Question about Broll - do you use a slider or someone helps you with camera work?
Haha, right?? I use a motorized slider that I just got. Still trying to get used to it actually.
@@MichaelSoledad the slider clips look really good. Keep using it 👍
hhaha This review is hilarious. It captures my emotions perfectly from casual membrane user to keyboard review watching fanatic. Trying to figure out if I should get a blue or brown MX switch...
Browns are scratchy “linear” (technically tactile but not really) , blues are tactile clicky switches. I say get blues or something non-cherry MX. If you want actual tactile switches get MX Clears but they are heavy (hard to press).
Bro I got 5 minutes into this video and the overwhelm got so high that I actually put my phone down and said “bro I Can’t do this” 😂😂 great video
Totally get it lol! Thanks for getting that far, Tom!
join the rabbit hole...i'm about to build mine hopefully next week
Just discovered your channel through youtube algorithm and im glad it did. As a newbie youtuber, watching your videos are refreshing and inspiring. Keep safe!
Thank you! 😊
@@MichaelSoledad was thinking about building my own mechanical keyboard but same as you, i was overwhelmed with all the info. So i settled to buying a pre built one. Maybe someday. Haha
Lol I got addicted to keyboards within a month after I heard how a keyboard sounded after bandaid mod and lube and know I am literally modding a while a keyboard to make it perfect so I hopefully won’t end up with 20 keyboards
Thumbs up for the teal backlighting
It’s my favorite.
This is the most sensible review I've heard about mechanical keyboards.
But the obsession is real, and be prepared to pay more for mech keyboard than your pc lol.
That’s what I’m afraid of
I'm old-er. Like, old enough to recall when the only kind of KB was mechanical (and when you had to actually load DOS in the PC manually). I was glad when the technology evolved, and now that I've been an Apple Fanboy for many years, I'm not sure I would want to go back. But I appreciate that there are folks who do. However, that space gray keyboard you're no longer using caught my eye. ;-)
Does it store the RGB color profile? IE If I plug it into computer A with red RGB, and then unplug and plug it into computer B, will the rgb still be red? If not what is the default RGB?
I would probably compare it more to cars than cologne. For lots of people a car is a car. Even then there are people who enjoy a nicer car. and then there are people who are enthusiasts or hobbyists where its not just about the utility. it really is about the community and hobby of caring about a small aspect of life and getting enjoyment out of it.
Good analogy. I was actually going to liken it to cars but most of my past analogies were of cars.
Do the white keys stain over time? at the moment, that's the only hesitation i have with the keyboard.
Liked and Subbed... well said Sir.
Thank you!
When one makes a video of a mechanical keyboard, one must include a type test/sound test
Got a fact wrong: both tactile and linear switches do actuate (register) before the switches bottom out (depresses all the way).
Ah, i was bound to make a mistake somewhere. Thanks for the correction!
You went in deep $$$ wise for your first Mech KB. Typing before watching. Hope it is better than thumbnail appears to insinuate. Lol.
Well, this one was sent in as a tester so I got lucky
I went down the ergonomic keyboard rabbit hole about fifteen years ago, and now I'm wondering if I got suckered.
see I'm a simple man I see browns, I click away
does the f96 have native macOS support? meaning, volume, media playback keys (back, play, next) at least? I can do without brightness and the rest
Yes, they support those. Although I haven't tried the back/play/next keys.
Would be great if you could, let us know if it works. You’re the only reviewer who uses it on a mac. Thanks!
Ahh. It is always an amusement to my eyes seeing someone fell down this rabbit hole i got into. Welcome to this dark and clacky corners of the universe.
I’ve fallen in it unfortunately. Or maybe fortunately. Thank you for the welcome!
@@MichaelSoledad I would recommend checking Taehatypes and Taekeyboard's yt channels. You will learn a lot from theme.
Another grEThe main reason for an experienced typist to go mechanical, is performance. An experienced typist will always be faster on a mechanical keyboard. The clackety-clack sound gives audible confirmation, which adds to the person’s speed and accuracy of typing.
Finally, I like the nice word play on IQUNIX, being IQ and the UNIX Operating System, which OS X is an Apple custom version of BSD UNIX. That’s my justification for pronouncing their (product or company name?) as, “IQue NIX”. 😎
200 mechanical keyboard is expensive but 140 on desk mat gets no mention
Get a mainstream branded mechanical keyboard they’re all good !!
1st xD I'm still watching it, but I know it's going to be a top quality video ;)
Thank you!
Where did you get your desk pad?
From Grovemade. Updated the links in the description.
And then you discover the mechanical split keyboards and...
I had to leave the subreddit because I could feel my wallet slowly getting thinner.
@@MichaelSoledad I have a limited card for Internet shopping now :( for that reason xD
Last longer. Until the start to double click T_T
The only con in mechanical keyboards: typing on anything else makes your hands feel gross.
Yep, I hated myself for using a rubber dome scratchy keybaord for a long time. Used my gat milky yellows for a few months and tried to type on my old keyboard again. I have never been so mad and disgusted at the same time.
Damn! you did a lot of homework! Hehe glad you've already joined the Keyboard Universe!
Haha, thanks! It was no easy task
cherry mx has more than 4 types of switches.
06:23 well actually you use that guy to replace the switches, which means the keyboard is hot-swappable, i.e. you can have both brown and red and blue switches on the same keyboard
Holy smokes, you're awesome! Thanks for this.
Sorry this is incorrect, that keyboard is not hot-swappable. You would have to de-sodder the switches to change them. The tool shown is in fact a keycap puller as is stated in the video.
cool but too expensive
Why do Apple fans buy their products just because "ApPLe"? He realized how bad the ergonomics are for their keyboards. Wait till he uses a real mouse like the MX Master, he'll want to throw that "mouse" to the trash in a heartbeat. Anyways, great production quality!
I don‘t get it, never tried it, not interested. The clicky sound is SO annoying to me! I love typing with NC headphones on my already quiet Surface Keyboard.
I also don’t like the bulky look of mechanical keyboards.
Is it really that satisfying?
look up a few videos from :3ildcat and taehatypes, you'll understand why after listening to a few type tests. It's extremely satisfying to type on.
You really have to try it yourself for you to find out for yourself. I also thought at first that I wouldn't like them coz of how people described it and how it's a lot more expensive compared to ordinary keys -but I gave one a try for myself last year. I must say, one of the best decisions I ever made.
You could have linear switches or find variety that are silent to reduce the sound instead of choosing tactile or clicky switches. Not only that you could always try out smaller form factor like 60% or 75% which have a smaller footprint. As for the bulk, there are low profile switches and smaller cases that you could try and it's all up to personal taste. That's what makes custom mechanical keyboard so great, you could make it as personal and fitting to your needs as you'd like.
Also on how satisfying it is? It's really satisfying :')
quick edit: there are also extra mods you can do to make it more silent: different keycaps, o-rings, lubing stabs/switches, clipping stabs, band-aid mod, foam padding, etc. The list just goes on and on.
Quite few people in the community like the click sound, though. The modern ideal for a keyboard is a modest "thock" sound.
Something like this, which is quiet, but still gives some feedback letting you know that you've hit the key. ruclips.net/video/ZvSuMLM3grY/видео.html
Best is to try one out. If possible try out the different set of switches. Personally I love the clicky ones but everyone has their own preference and in the world of mechanical keyboards, the options are endless. You’ll definitely find one that suits you best.
1. Linear switch feels like you're pressing a marshmallow.
2. It is called mechanical because each switch have spring then soldered on PCB
3. If you got annoyed with the compact layout, there are I guess more than 30 layouts to choose from custom keyboards
4. Most users opted for custom keyboards because they can choose what switches, materials, layout, keycaps to use. They are programmable too! Its not about the price, but to obtain the best feeling, sound, feature on a keyboard :D

How awful it is to use a keyboard that dont has Apple symbols??
for the first time???? wtf dude. you used one in elementary
How do you know I wasn't using an Abacus when I was a kid?
@@MichaelSoledad lol that too. They kinda click as well.
