    Thanks for this! I've been researching irrigation set-up and it has seemed overwhelming. You've really broken down in a way I can easily understand. I don't feel as intimated now.

    Awesome video series Laura! Just wanted to share a couple things about irrigation though. I have found it necessary to put a metal clamp on the joints so they stay secure long term (maybe your tubing is different from mine but I have had them pop off). Also, I always leave a valve at the end that can be opened up in fall so the tubing can be blown out as it needs to be winterized. If the water stays in the tubing and it freezes and expands, it can crack.

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 4 месяца назад

      Yes, there should be an end cap to flush debris out periodically.

  • @hollyb8993

    Hopefully in one of the following videos of the series you also let us know how to winterize drip systems since they are so close to the surface.

      Disconnect the hose from hose bib and let the tubing empty completely. That’s how we do it.

    The back flow preventer is required by the water department in Virginia Beach. So, I would recommend you check your water department when installing an irrigation system in your area. Great DEMO!!

    • @vivianlott6563
      @vivianlott6563 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the info, from Alexandria VA. Do you know why they require it?

    • @mariafolch8067
      @mariafolch8067 5 лет назад

      @@vivianlott6563 They want to ensure that debris does not go into the city water. The backflow allows water to flow in one direction but never in the opposite direction. Its sole job is to prevent drinking water from being contaminated due to backflow. If you plan to apply fertilizers or pesticides using your irrigation system, then in most cases you must have a backflow preventer- regardless of the water source.

    • @greenthumbelina7331
      @greenthumbelina7331 5 лет назад +1

      Our little town of 800-900 people (which is referred to as "City", LOL) also requires backflow prevention on all outside irrigation.

    • @silverfeathered1
      @silverfeathered1 4 года назад +1

      Or... Just use one regardless of a law that had to be made to prevent people from hurting or killing their families.
      "Professionals" might skip it because they play an active role in thier irrigation system and fully understand how it works. A DIY'er will normally have minimal basic knowledge... and take advice from RUclipsrs telling them it's no big deal to leave it off (even if they half-heartedly recommend having one without saying why it was okay for them not to).

    • @taden2007

      If ur system is on a water timer won’t that prevent the back flow? When system is on it would be under positive pressure so not sure how anything would go up pipes?

    Thank you so much. I never realized the setup was 'self contained'? I just always thought there was an 'end'. Never would have thought about connecting it to itself. So glad I saw this. I never thought I could do or afford a drip system. In the last 10 years I've really gotten into 'plants', have way more than I can handle, say every year I'll cut back and then I swear I do even more. But I don't keep up with the watering or fertilizing like they really need and the don't do as well as I'd like. I am now a believer! This is what I need and I know I can do it. Maybe not all at once, but I can start.

So if you’ve tapped into your main sprinkler system @ home to convert it to drip in certain areas for flower beds, please show us how you did it & how the pressure is regulated for drip instead of underground irrigation.

    Hi Laura and Aaron! Another very helpful and well explained video! We put in 2 raised garden beds last summer for our vegetables and ran a hose to them to set up soaker hoses for watering. We use a timer and both the pressure reducer and the back flow preventer. Maybe we didn't need them, but they were inexpensive and may save us from having problems down the road. I do think I will go with the drip hose for them next year. Also, we used a "Y" at the faucet so we could hook up another hose for hand watering the containers on our decks. Thank you for sharing! I'm new in our channel. All your videos are so helpful for someone like me; you make everything so simple and easy. I wish I have the same skills as you do on planting :)

    This will be on the list for NEXT YEAR because I don't think I can work in our 100+ heat this year. Just as soon as it cools down....I'm doing DRIP & investing in nice big established plants. It will make it easier to sell if we get the itch to move again.
