I don't normally comment on youtube videos, but this is perhaps the most informative video I've ever seen on here. I was getting into the weeds trying to figure out how to add a drip irrigation system to my vegetable garden, and there's like a million videos for each particular product. This just gives the general overview I needed all along. Thanks for this. I can't wait to watch the other videos in this series as I get more advanced with it!
So many how to on youtube just repeating the same stuff over and over, not here ! I took notes and felt like i got it the first time. Great video thanks a ton.
Hi Jim. My first post. After reviewing several you tube videos on installing drip irrigation systems, i finally worked up a flow design. Very simple in nature but more importantly, i found the confidence to do it myself. Ordered everything i need and I'm now just waiting for the items to arrive. Appreciate your easy to watch instructions.
You have made drip irrigation TREMENDOUSLY more simple than reading the instructions that came with my system. I think I can actually get this done now, haha. Thank you!
I have been watching videos on setting up a basic drip system for my small home garden. This one is the best. I wish I had seen this earlier. Choice of a main line with 1/4 inch drip line with built in emitters is an excellent recommendation. Keeps it simple with very few parts. Thanks
FINALLY!!! Somebody explaining and showing a proper drip irrigation system/setup that is not PVC pipe with holes drill in them ... folks that is not a drip system ... a spray system of some sort but not drip!!! Great video!
This is amazing. Thank you for the detailed information. I have been watching videos on drip irrigation for weeks and this is the first time I am actually able to understand well enough to make a list.
Hi Jim.. I'm two years late to this video but it contain the contents that will never go old or suspended.. I'm starting to get my system up and running thanks for your tutorial. Stay home and be safe.
This is so very helpful! Thank you for the clear instruction. I've watched the videos and I"m now rewatching right before we go outside and install ours today!
Same! I’m at the point where I’m ready to install the drip system. It’s my first time and my husband has absolutely no clue what he is doing! I’m watching YT videos and trying to freshen up before I purchase everything I need and install it. This video series was by far the most helpful
People planning to feed drip lines directly from their home plumbing (eg, via an outside hose bib) and leave the connections in place indefinitely and unattended also need to look into setting up some kind of code compliant backflow preventer assembly (eg, a pressure vacuum breaker, a doublecheck valve assembly, etc). Most municipalities legally require it.
Thank you. I feel more confident about my options for water irrigation after this video. Taking time explain all the tools, fitting and tubing names to the point. This is the best video about irrigation in You Tube!!!
I appreciate this video so much! I have drip run to my containers but want to also run some to my flower beds. You cover every detail perfectly, thank you!
I just came across your video as well and have to say I was very intimidated at the beginning of the video looking at all the pipe/tubing but by the end I feel confident I could explain it (along with the notes I took) to someone else. I know it will still take me forever to plan it out and lay it in our very small yard, but I finally feel like this a doable task now. Looking forward to watching your next videos. Thanks for taking the time to create and share this info with all of us! I appreciate you!!
Great video. Now I have a plan for my garden boxes, They are 4 x 8 x 2 boxes with 1/2" threaded pvc pipe in the middle pointed up coming from a valve that I can add to my controller. So my plan is to put a regulator with filter on first, then the adapter for the 17 mm line. Loop that down to the dirt in the box, close it. Tap into the 17 mm line for my drip line. Put an on off switch in and run my drip line!
Thanks for the info. I. Want to take a vacation and I just didn’t know how simple it is to put down for my veggies. I know my neighbor won’t have a problem picking them while I’m gone LOL. You’re easy to listen to and follow. Again thanks!
Thank you my friend I was going to hook that 18 inch to my veggies. I wasn't sure about the 1/4 tubing. This is my second year doing this. Last year I ran punch hole with with those bubbler in my vegetable garden. I wasn't happy in the performance. Now that i'm restarting over again you answer my question..God bless You. Happy Easter..
I’ve watched dozens of videos to better acquaint myself with this type of drip irrigation. I have to say your series is the only one that appealed to me. I’ll be watching these on repeat again. I’m wondering if you have a comprehensive list of the sizes of your pipes and tubing and all of the punches and fittings so that I know what to look for. I wish I had a hands on mentoring session, but I think I can do this with your videos.
I studied Horticulture at my local community college about 10 years ago and remember taking notes and sketching diagrams while the instructor was lecturing & demonstrating this! I can visualize my notes w/ all the parts you've mentioned.
Good info...especially the tip about the necessity to change the imitters on hanging baskets throughout the season. I would have never known that. Thanks Jim.
If you have your timer at the end of a hose be sure and put the pressure reducer before the hose. Most hoses are not able to withstand constant pressure without eventually bursting or the fittings blowing off. I learned this the hard way.
My connectors and tubing was way harder to connect than yours. Fingers got a bit sore haha. I ended up using a torch to soften the 1/4” tubing before attaching connectors or emitters and it made a huge difference.
Appreciate the clear and detailed info, Jim. After years of manually watering our vegetable plot, I've decided to finally install this in our garden this spring. Looking forward to watching your Part 2 in this series.
The o-ring gaskets are replaceable, so you could try that. But otherwise, something might be damaged and preventing a watertight seal from forming. Leaving water inside those parts overnight during a freeze could crack them, among other things.
I have only watched the first 3 minutes, but the way you're explaining it seems like itll be easy for a beginner to do. I have lots of plants in large pots, will i be able to add water with the drip system as well?
Take a clean yoghurt container and put a sewing needle through the bottom. Fill it with water and see how long it takes to empty. That will give you the time it will take to empty and you can work from there to decide how big a container you actually will need--a pint, a quart, a gallon, multiple gallons, etc.
I was just wondering what PSI regulator do you recommend for drip tape? You’ve got a 25 PSI on your parts list. Wondering if that’s too much for drip tape.
Can someone PLEASE tell me how long (hours/ minutes) you run your drip? I’ve ask Laura and every other gardening channel I watch. That’s the big mystery, not all the bits and parts. Well, that was a mystery at first but videos like yours certainly helped!
Do you recommend a 2 way splitter from the timer for 2 areas? If so, which one? Would I need two pressure regulators attached to each side of the splitter? Thanks for your helpful video.
Jim, Amazon don’t have this drip irrigation kit anymore and don’t know when they will get it back in. Could you look and see if they have another one that you like? I’m new to this and I don’t want to waste money on tubing that will rot.
I want to have the emitter lines water the garden for germination of seeds and for plant growth of vegetables in a small garden, I'll use the hose, timer, pressure reg. and filter and then distribute through the emitter lines. Can that do both the germination of seeds and the growing stages?
I have had 2 kits for 3 years - still in the box. I have a in-ground sprinkler system. I want to convert 2 out of 4 to drip. I can’t figure out what I need to hook up the water. Do I need to dig up down the line like before the first sprinkler and add a regulator somehow? This is my holdup.
Hi.. I see this is an older video. But you make it look easy. So I'm following what you're doing. 😊 It's my first time setting this up. I have all the parts as of today. You talk about a filter and pressure regulator. I don't have those yet. Here's why. I use a lot of worm casting in my garden. I have 9 Rubbermaid bins of Red Wigglers. Every summer, I put an RV Water filter on the faucet and then hook the hose onto that. So the chlorine ect ect bad stuff is filterd out the water. So doesn't kill everything in the casting. My question is.. Can I just attach my ½ hose to the RV filter ? Would that do the same as the filter and pressure regulator you have . I don't want to spend $$ if I don't need to. 🙂
What brand model etc is the pressure regulator you show in the video? I can't find one that looks like that! And, that fits directly to timer (hose thread) to distribution pipe (pipe thread).
What about the winter? Do you have to dis-assemble the whole system over the winter? Or how do you drain the last little bits of water so it doesn't freeze in the tubing?
I want to install drip irrigation in my flower gardens before I go in Vacation. I have a question, Do I use 1/2 inch drip irrigation tubing & 1/4 inch drip irrigation emitter lines (the one with the holes in it) so that they will fit into each other?
Thanks so much for your efforts. Very good explanation. Pls, I wanted to know how much it would cost me to have a vegetable farm of an acre irrigated using the 6 inches spacing and considering that I have nothing else but just a water source.
Would a rain barrel be able to provide enough water to run a drip system? I'm just looking for a very hands off solution to watering my landscaping plants. I would use a 50 gallon barrel to water around 20 plants.
Can we bury the hoses underground? I need to irrigate some trees in my yard, and I am having an issue watering the trees too much because I have to water the lawn. I am trying to figure a way to water the trees and lawn separately. This seems like I might be able to do it with the bubblers for the lawn and drips for the trees unless you have a video for another idea? I can't afford an entire sprinkler system, so looking at cheaper methods.

ha! Just read the rest of the comments on this video saying the exact same thing. Someone nominate this video for a webby already!

How do farmers water again? You are a moron.
This is amazing. Thank you for the detailed information. I have been watching videos on drip irrigation for weeks and this is the first time I am actually able to understand well enough to make a list.

I added irrigation to my landscape last fall and this spring and is well worth the relatively small upfront cost and time it saves.
Very true.
Your explanations and directions are clear and very helpful for a novice. Thanks
I'm glad. A little nervous when there is that much to say. The next videos will hopefully be easier to understand with that explanation behind us.

Wow. This was so helpful. I've been searching for a intro video like this. Thank you!!!
Thanks Jim, for an easy no nonsense instruction video.👍🏻
Thank you! Very good tutorial -Exactly what I needed to understand and repair our drip system in the Darden and for containers.
Sir, thank you for this video. Very thorough and well described. You have saved me some time and headache.
Your presentations are clear, concise and better than most! Highly recommend! Thank you.
Thank you very much.
I feel like I can do this myself after watching!! Thank you!!
This series is coming at the perfect time for me and i am very excited about it. Thanks!
I'm glad. Thanks for watching.
He makes it sound so easy , I'm exited about building my first drip irrigation system ,I hope I nail it ,thanks for the video .
We just did one this year with 5 zones. It's as easy ssd here makes it sound.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. I'll be watching the rest of your related videos.
Good info...especially the tip about the necessity to change the imitters on hanging baskets throughout the season. I would have never known that. Thanks Jim.

Your informative video is exactly what I needed. I'm making my shopping list as I watch your video. Thank you so much!
Awesome, glad to help
Great video! I really appreciate the tutorial. It was worth the commercial breaks
Thank you! Newbie gardener and this was just what I needed
My connectors and tubing was way harder to connect than yours. Fingers got a bit sore haha. I ended up using a torch to soften the 1/4” tubing before attaching connectors or emitters and it made a huge difference.
I would always lay it out in the sun on landscape jobs to soften it up
Very through. Thank you! I use this timer and these lines. Dewitt has great landscape staples, very reasonably priced.
thank you so, SO much for this series!!
Thank you. Best educational vid about irritation I’ve seen.
Very helpful! I was very intimidated to try adding a drip irrigation and I really appreciate your details
Thanks for watching. I'm about to start a new series soon
Best video I've found on explaining drip irrigation setup. New subscriber here! Enjoying your videos!
Great job. I'm looking to install drip and this answered my questions. Really good channel.
Very nice video. I can't wait to start my garden with the hose setup.
great succinct explanation of an amazing product. excited about this summer.
Soooooooooo happy I didn’t just try to wing this on my own. Awesome, easy how-to guide.
Thanks a lot for a detailed explanation on each of the parts involved in the irrigation system. I am new to this and your video made my day.
Brilliant! Thank you for your detailed explanation!
Appreciate the clear and detailed info, Jim. After years of manually watering our vegetable plot, I've decided to finally install this in our garden this spring. Looking forward to watching your Part 2 in this series.
Wonderful Jim!, thanks for taking on this subject! Also really appreciate the amazon links.
I always get leaks at my swivel connector on the timer or the hose/tube connector, is there a fix?
The o-ring gaskets are replaceable, so you could try that. But otherwise, something might be damaged and preventing a watertight seal from forming. Leaving water inside those parts overnight during a freeze could crack them, among other things.
Excellent presentation and lesson.
Really informative. Thank you so much for this video.
Great video. Thanks. I am trying to work my drip irrigation now. Very helpful
Great combination of good instructions plus well done videos.
you are awesome. Thanks for laying this out so clearly
Great video tutorial,,, love the color of the tubing as well, this upped my level of confidence in trying this. The birds sounds are awesome!
Thanks Brian.
Your explanations and directions are clear and very helpful... Thanks
Unbelievable!!!!!!! Thank you, sir!!
I have only watched the first 3 minutes, but the way you're explaining it seems like itll be easy for a beginner to do. I have lots of plants in large pots, will i be able to add water with the drip system as well?
This is the best video ever
How durable is the distro hose to long life under wood chips? Also, what do you do for winter to prevent water freeze/brust?
Take a clean yoghurt container and put a sewing needle through the bottom. Fill it with water and see how long it takes to empty. That will give you the time it will take to empty and you can work from there to decide how big a container you actually will need--a pint, a quart, a gallon, multiple gallons, etc.
Excellent video!
Great overview, thanks!
I'm wondering if you have tried connecting into a 1/4" soaker hose? I'm thinking that would work the same. Thanks so much very helpful!
The Rainbird Starter Kit you recommend has not been available for months. Is there another starter product that you would recommend?
Pretty sure I saw them on Amazon. However, it may be less expensive to simply get a list of the needed items and buy them individually.
Look at drip depot dot com, I think their kits are well built, come with what you need and are customizable.
Carpathen drip irrigation systems. There on amazon i just ordered mine under 50 for everything beside timer.
Very good video. Well done!
Really useful video thanks. Looks like I need some 1/4 drip pipe!
Thanks for the video,
1- how do you change the drip emitters?
2- how many bar pressure regulator do we need?
Typically the pressure regulators are set to 20 psi (1.38 bar).
Thanks so much! Helped me greatly!!
I was just wondering what PSI regulator do you recommend for drip tape? You’ve got a 25 PSI on your parts list. Wondering if that’s too much for drip tape.
OMG you sound just like Kenny Powers / Danny McBride !! Love it - Gardening voiced by one of my fave characters LOL
Can someone PLEASE tell me how long (hours/ minutes) you run your drip? I’ve ask Laura and every other gardening channel I watch. That’s the big mystery, not all the bits and parts. Well, that was a mystery at first but videos like yours certainly helped!
Very clear instructions.
Do you leave the hose Bibb on so the water constantly flows? Won’t that increase your water bill if you leave your hose Bibb on?
Do you recommend a 2 way splitter from the timer for 2 areas? If so, which one? Would I need two pressure regulators attached to each side of the splitter? Thanks for your helpful video.
Jim, Amazon don’t have this drip irrigation kit anymore and don’t know when they will get it back in. Could you look and see if they have another one that you like? I’m new to this and I don’t want to waste money on tubing that will rot.
We love you Jim . .
I want to have the emitter lines water the garden for germination of seeds and for plant growth of vegetables in a small garden, I'll use the hose, timer, pressure reg. and filter and then distribute through the emitter lines. Can that do both the germination of seeds and the growing stages?

Super helpful. I think I can do this!
Thanks great information 👍 I really appreciated 👍
Hi.. I see this is an older video. But you make it look easy. So I'm following what you're doing. 😊
It's my first time setting this up.
Do I need a different(bigger) poker tool for the 1/2in barb for shrubs and trees?
What brand model etc is the pressure regulator you show in the video? I can't find one that looks like that! And, that fits directly to timer (hose thread) to distribution pipe (pipe thread).
What about the winter? Do you have to dis-assemble the whole system over the winter? Or how do you drain the last little bits of water so it doesn't freeze in the tubing?
SO GOOD!!!! THANK YOU!
Thank you! I appreciate the video. Can’t wait to set my drip cuz I’m tired of taking my hose everywhere (:
Would a rain barrel be able to provide enough water to run a drip system? I'm just looking for a very hands off solution to watering my landscaping plants. I would use a 50 gallon barrel to water around 20 plants.
The pressure may not be enough to force water evenly out of all the holes
Can we bury the hoses underground? I need to irrigate some trees in my yard, and I am having an issue watering the trees too much because I have to water the lawn. I am trying to figure a way to water the trees and lawn separately. This seems like I might be able to do it with the bubblers for the lawn and drips for the trees unless you have a video for another idea? I can't afford an entire sprinkler system, so looking at cheaper methods.
Thank you so much for the info I now totally understand 👍🏼
If using only the drip emitter line can it be left out during the winter?
The line, yes. But it should be winterized first (ie, drain all water out of all the lines).
@@rgzhaffieThank you!
Amazon has a brass barbed hose adapter, but not sure it’s what you used, or if it’s the correct one.
Mr. Putnam, Is there a better size of hose?
1/4 inch versus 1/2 inch?
Can you reply back with a link to your hanging basket irrigation video? I'm having some trouble finding it. Thanks!
Hey man great videos
Thank you !
Can you do this using a rain barrel as the water source?
