    Bonham was the glue, that held it ALL together! My Nephew is getting into playing the drums. As a former drummer I gave him the most honest advice I could. I told him, the guitar player, can have a bad night. The bass player, can have a bad night. The singer, can have a bad night. But the drummer, can NEVER have a bad night! I've heard many of Zeppelin's shows, I could count on one hand the amount of times Bonham had a bad night! I have to say that, because he was human, he just played like he wasn't! Keep 'em comin Jose!

    Plant's voice from 1969 to 1971 was the greatest rock performance ever. He blew his voice out through not taking care of it , or managing it and the sheer volume of shows. He obviously approached every gig like it was his last and it cost him. The Royal Albert Hall concert is a great example of his power. Hey JCM, how about about a video dedicated to that show? Can't really go wrong with 1973 live Zeppelin as they were on top of their game then. I really enjoyed the San Francisco transition to the vialion bow. As a suggestion for another episode would be to focus on the avant guard / experimental stuff that Page did. Things like the hurdy gurdy from the song remains the same and the Lucifer rising session. I know that you had covered the death wish soundtrack but a deep dive on the textural avant guard would be fabulous. Thanks again Jose

    For another epic Bonham night, check out the legendary For Badgeholders Only show on 6/23/77. Jcm was saying that Germany brought out great shows in Zeppelin. In my opinion from one of the very first shows they ever played at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go straight through those legendary badge holder shows in '77, Los Angeles brought out the very best Zeppelin shows: Blueberry Hill. How the West Was Won, Deepthroat, Badgeholders. But for my money, 6/23/77 captures a magical night of percussion on a night when everybody's firing on all cylinders. The way he follows Jimmy almost note for note during parts of the No Quarter solo is fricken sublime. From the opening TSRTS straight through, it's ridiculous. This is the night that Keith Moon is partying with them through the whole show and comes out in the encore to bash on the tympany and one of the cymbals during a medly of WLL/RnR after lecturing the crowd about how "there's very few who can actually tupper and tell you what rock and roll is all about!" with Planty tooling around on Bonzo's kit behind him.

    I say we do a deep dive into the Hamburg show. Somehow it seems to get overlooked. Vienna, Offenburg and other dates seem to get the glory for some reason. I love how they stretched and contorted I Can’t Quit You out to barely recognizable conditions on this tour. It really showcased their mastery of the Blues. Without John Bonham…the whole thing would’ve been an absolute disaster. His keep of the time was so very CRUCIAL to the Zeppelin operation.

Haha the middle solo section of OTHAFA, the artillery barrage of Nobody's Fault, straight machine gun fire of Achilles', the phased/flanged hammer of the gods in Kashmir and that sublime interplay with Jimmy during the extended No Quarter solo (having replaced the epic D&C on the '77 setlist as the drawn out instrumental number that left the most room for exploration and improvisation)

    These '73 German shows in Europe have always been some of my favourites instrumentally ever since I began collecting Zeppelin boots back in the mid '80's...but this deep dive again highlights how Plant was, in my eyes, the weak link in the band from '73 onwards. The vocal decline in just one year from 72 to 73 is shocking.

      @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories  4 месяца назад +2

      Same here! I had a box full of CD-Rs with the German tour, after these shows it was so damn hard to get into 1975 you know? Yes, Robert's vocals really changed after 1972, it was all but the song remains the same for him unfortunately!

    • @carlscarlet
      @carlscarlet 4 месяца назад +1

      @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories totally agree..I could never get into the 75 shows, and I had/have them all, but after immersing myself in the live boots of the US tours of 1970, '71 and and '72, Germany '73 (instrumentally devastating), Japan '71, Copenhagen 71, etc, the 75 shows didn't cut it for me. Ditto '77. Yes, they looked amazing, the set list was amazing on paper, the whole Showco presentation, the dragon suit..but musically, and especially vocally, the 1975-77 shows made me realise why some people didn't dig Zeppelin. None of the other bands I listened to had such a vocal decline as Robert had; Paul Rodgers, James Dewar, Frankie Miller, Gregg Allman, Steve Winwood in Traffic, Jon Anderson in Yes, Gabriel/Collins in 70's Genesis, Rod in the Faces, Marriott in Humble Pie, Daltrey, Gillan, Jack Bruce, Steve Walsh in Kansas, Dio in Rainbow, Macca in Wings, Terry Reid, NONE of them slid off the vocal scale in a few years like Robert did. All these singers were able to do justice to their back catalogue throughout the '70's, but for me, Robert lost it after the US tour of '72. Even Japan '72 had more in common with the vocal cracking of '73 onwards than the glory days, vocally, of 1971.

    I would imagine that touring Europe, requiring the crossing of international borders, less illegal substances were carried. That and a less rigorous schedule contributed to sharper performances, in my opinion. Touring America on a whirlwind schedule, drugs, groupies and the lot has a tendency to leave a band jaded, strung out and exhausted. Of course, America is where the biggest and most lucrative gigs are.

    Leave it to Bonzo to help out his great friend Plant, who vocals aren’t in top form. Things like that, are one of many reasons they were the greatest ever.

    It’s amazing that for the majority of their career, Plant’s voice was wrecked. He should have had a vocal coach, fewer gigs, and the band should have been looking out for him by changing the keys.

      @@RockChick63174I disagree I’m afraid. It was well within the power of JPJ and JP to work out what RP’s new vocal range was and adjust accordingly. If they didn’t spot the damage then they clearly weren’t as professional as they thought they were. I met up with members of my school band a few years back and the first thing we did was adjust all the keys to suit our singer’s adult range. It’s not difficult.

      I think part of it (and the whole LZ thing) was taking it over the edge… pushing to excess, over the limit… hence Plant screamed until his voice broke up! Can’t compete with explosive drumming and guitar playing otherwise!

      I mean that to keep up with the other band members, Percy HAD to shred his vocal cords. Example… Immigrant song… can’t croon over that bludgeoning soundscape!

    The article shown near the end basicly outlines,
    that the concert was typical, in so far as it showed the decline of a Live band that was once at the top of the game. LedZep were victims of their own image and a sad parody of themselves. They were musically fatigued and every musician was on an ego trip. Also the PA was way too small and Percy's voice was distorted with delay The acoustics of the Olympiahalle were known to be one of the worst in germany and the 7500 people were most ecstatic when they played an old Presley Song. He goes on to say that LZ , like most other big rock bands of the day, had fallen into the habit of endless soloing to display their prowess but that there was no discernable form behind it and that it ended up being boring. He concludes that they didn't believe in what they produced before but at the same time were not capable of evolving.
    If he says that about this concert... just imagine how stellar they were when they came out!
    But seriously I guess there was some funk going on back then. People and artists just got exhausted and drugs contributed in both the highs and the lows.
    I've gathered a lot of great memories of the Olympic Park in Munich. Many concerts ;)
