Berserk has been on my radar as a story I needed to review for years. On top of it being one of the most requested stories I should review for the longest time, the fans surrounding the series have proven to be some of the most passionate.
Unfortunately this year saw the tragic passing of one of the best manga artists of the last generation in Kentaro Miura. His work has touch the hearts and minds of millions across the world and so this is chance to give back to the community of Berserk in a small wall.

Just to be clear, the berserker armor does NOT amplify the wearers strength, it just numbs you to pain and gets rid of your mental barriers. Guts percieved super strength is his own strength without limitation or regard on how it will tear his muscles and bones apart, which is why the armor has to hold his body together the way it does. I feel like that is a very important clarification to make about what the armor does.
Crazy how so many people miss this point. I was waiting for the panel where the armor digs into the bones to keep him going and the skull shape it starts with and the fact that the skull knight knows the witch.
He missed some other points too but al of them will be clear later anyways so I’ll let him figure it out later.

@@bjsuits What honestly disappointed me the most while watching this was when he talked about the berserker armor he concluded that segment with seeing how the berserker armor works and how it fucked Guts up so bad, he called it awesome, badass and great and completely missed the narrative/emotional beats of it. Everyone is welcome to enjoy Berserk how they see fit, but to do an analysis/summary and so blatantly skip these points is disappointing and makes it feel like this was rushed and not really given the time it deserved. I'm certain he cares and like you said he'll figure it out, but that was just so disappointing to see him totally miss it.

Afraid this isn't true. In the last chapter, guts doesn't have the strength to wield the Dragonslayer without accidentally having it slip from his hands due to grip strength, he literally states he is 'useless without it' when talking about the armour giving him the strength. It absolutely amplified his strength

By far my favorite aspect of the Berserker Armor is that, even though it is a magic item that makes Guts way stronger, the power still comes from Guts. It only allows him to push his body past its limit, not grant him strength he doesn't already have. Guts's strength is still entirely his own and, above all, entirely human.
The difference between Miura and other mangaka is when Guts goes _even further BEYOND_ we become concerned.
We NEED a proper Beserk anime that gives it the recognition it deserves.

Dude I always say this. Every adaptation so far does not do it justice. It's so well loved and known, yet it's never done as well as it deserves. I would think the publishing company has the money to do it from Berserk's success, AND the the anime would be popular. Weird how is hasn't happened.
I heard Castlevania Team is interested in making a Berserk adaptation and the director of Castlevania Adi is a Big Fan of Berserk
Last year I watched the uncensored blurays of the 2016/17 anime. It wasnt fantastic but it wasnt bad either. It was fun and satisfying.

I love that moment where Guts first hears "The Band of the Hawk" coming out of the Apostles mouths, it's like the ultimate disrespect to his comrades. God damn why did Miura have to go so young.
The Berserker Armour is easily my favourite powerup and I love that it's not something he can just effortlessly master because he's the main character, he would have died several times over if not for Scheirke because ultimately...he's just a human.
Ultimately, the purpose of berserk armos is to kill his owner. It was shown in one of last chapters (that with smith).

You're right about him being just human. Actually i think that Miura's subtle changes to Gut's appearance are a masterful way of showing the effects of the armor and his lifestyle - His hair start to grow white, while still being crazy muscular, he seems much thinner than he was at the black swordsman arc. It's a stark contrast to your typical shounen protagonist, where they get beaten to near death and always bounce back stronger. It's not the case for Guts - he might seem to be as strong (if not stronger) as ever, the life he was leading up until now takes its toll on his body. No fight and no injury magically disappear - it's all there, eating at his core.
I feel like it's a great allude to people growing older. It would seem like even though you have wrinkles now, you're still the same, but inside you can feel that you've changed, and that you'll never be the same both physically and mentally. Could this change also be Miura's mirroring his own aging and changes in health? Who knows.

the death of this stories creator is a tragidy that going to sting for a long time to come. so much lost forever, artists are truly special people who can touch generations and this i hope will be no different even though it sadly was left in complete, such a terrible loss.
This makes these hard to watch for me. Mark is absolutely enjoying all these little details of this sprawling world & story and the fact that (just like HxH´... Mark chose some finished series please) we will never actually experience the conclusion of this story, that's just rough...

I have grown numb and disenfranchised with Miura as an artist. I knew the rate he was going he would never finish it in even my lifetime much less his own.
A part of me is happy knowing there isn't going to be a next chapter because I know it won't be delayed for literal years due to his otaku obsession with other animated characters
I had grown to actually hate him for how much I loved his story.

Something about Guts assaulting Casca is where he’s at his worst.
For a brief moment, he gives into his temptation and hurts the very person he’s to protect. It honestly feels like a betrayal for how Guts was shown before.
His actions shouldn’t be justified, but he does learn from this. Him finally accepting Isidro, Serpico and Farnese shows he’ll learn from his mistakes.
Honestly, it’s a integral moment to show how human Guts is.

Had a business “convention” in the mountains last week so it was basically just 4 days of getting hammered at a rental home with 11 co workers from different offices on the east coast. I knew 4 of them personally, knew of 2 others, just me the rest.
So we’re kickin it and playing drinking games, getting to know each other and all that. It eventually gets to us telling about the most important or impactful thing to happen to us recently.
Mind you were a few hours deep into the drink and some are giving heart felt answers, others not so much. So I go on to talk about Berserk and specifically how Kentaro Miuras death basically destroyed me and my ass starts openly weeping. Then it turns into me explaining what the story is and what manga is and all that for the next 20mins.
I turned 25 last month and everyone there was 40-55 years old.
So yeaaaah.
When I sobered up the next day I just felt like crawling into a hole lmao

A passion for stories is timeless. Stories are a part of human tradition and the human condition-Berserk happens to be a legendary one.
I’m 26 and finally read this manga during a really dark time in my life. Just one of those moments where you find the right story at the right time. This manga got me through so much and bro I openly sobbed when I heard about Miura’s death. There’s no shame in loving stories and being impacted by them. There’s nothing wrong about caring. You know what it means to you even if others don’t get it.
I love the Berserker Armor, imo it's the most balanced powerup in fiction. In a series like Naruto for example, we get stuff like "oh damn, the nine tails' chakra is literally _flaying_ Naruto's skin off" but then it never really feels like a big deal because he heals in two seconds after the fight and it's never brought up again. Other characters tell him not to use it--or the rasenshuriken later on, for that matter--but _we_ want him to because it's just cool to us. With Guts, you can see what this armor's doing to him during and after each fight; I won't spoil anything here, but it has very lasting drawbacks. I can't think of any other powerup in any story that made me go "no no no stop, don't use it, oh shit, oh god, he's using it, oh god." It's the perfect balance of being really fucking cool but coming at a heavy cost. Love it

@@mc-snack3316 As devastating as Gon's adult transformation was, he did ultimately heal from it in two seconds (offscreen, to boot) thanks to Alluka. He was still out of commission for an arc though, so it's more than Naruto's injuries at least

Honestly, I would rather fight Darth Vader bare handed than even meet Griffith. There are things about Griffith that go way beyond any other villain for me.
Griffith is a bitch, not in power, but he's an asshole, great villain, you hate his guts much and more the story goes on, Darth Vader at least was a cool father and great redemption.
Of course, this _isn't_ Griffith anymore. But your point still works for Femto too.
@@pious83 I don't think that Griffith's transformation into Femto or his reincarnation changed who he's always been inside, just untethered him from mortal constraints. It's still Griffith, just a Griffith that isn't bound by mortal or human concerns, which is different than from when he was mortal but it doesn't change who he has always been.
@@SpaceLemon. It hasn't really changed who he was. But it was Femto reborn onto the physical plane. Much in the same way, Skull Knight remembers who he was but isn't the same being anymore.
@@coleabraham4350 Darth Vader was a father in title only, and his "redemption" was shallow and unearned. I think he is a cool villain but he doesn't hold a candle to the existential dread Griffith conjures in me. Griffith, after his reincarnation, is a human with no bounds, a being of want who has the complete freedom to achieve his wants. Ascended Griffith's existance makes the reality around him feel less like a real world with natural and relative concerns and desires and more like a toy set for him to play with, and suddenly you are just another part of that set. Darth Vader will kill you if you get in his way sure, but he doesn't have the will of the universe and the destiny of reality (causality) on his side. If you were to meet Griffith and were aware of how he came to be, you would have to accept that this really is his world and you're just living in it as fate itself decreed.
Mark I think you may have missed that when the Egg Apostle swallowed the cursed child, it was to the end of it becoming the vessel for Griffith's reincarnation into the mortal world, which means Griffith and the child are of the same flesh. If I'm remembering correctly, Griffith protecting Casca is remarked as an influence of the child's instinct to protect his mother.

No, the Egg was the vessel. He just swallowed the child so it didn't have to die alone, and it happened to fuse with Griffith's essence.
Casca is literally Griffith's mother in some sense, you are right.
The Berserker Armor is one of the best manga/anime “power ups” ever. Because it isn’t even a power up in the traditional sense. It basically just makes Guts numb to the pain he causes himself and others cause to him. On top of that, without Schierke, he would’ve been consumed by the armor itself. Killing him in the process. So if not watched over with a keen eye, the Berserker armor can become more of a liability in battle than a power up.
I’m about to commit blasphemy here with my comparison but I love both series, Berserk is better, but I love them both so I’m gonna do it anyways. Reminds me a lot of how Deku at the beginning of My Hero breaks his limbs everytime he uses his quirk until he’s able to divert power throughout his entire body. Him diverting power isn’t exactly a traditional power-up either because it just makes it so he can use whatever percentage he can control without breaking his body but he does significantly less with his quirk as a result. If Deku’s mastery of One for All was inspired by the Berserker Armor, I can totally see that.
But yeah. I just love that on one hand, it finally gives Guts a TRUE fighting edge against apostles and higher powered entities. On the other hand, he has to fight the armor itself from consuming him and potentially getting himself or his J-RPG party kill all while fighting his foes.
Idk. I just find unconventional power ups such as these to be incredibly interesting and it helps make the action even more interesting as well as the character drama happening during the fight scenes themselves. The armor came at such a great time in the manga when I personally wasn’t as invested in the Guts fight scenes.
Nah dude both the Berseker Armor "from what I understand because everything past the og Berserk series I'm getting from Mark" and One For All are pretty similar at least in terms of how they function use to much "tear yourself apart and all that" although I'd compare One For All to the Kaioken both are just so similar, practically the same thing if I'm being honest and that's not a bad thing

I dropped around that point it was boring af. The monster stuff in berserk is shit it's the human conflict and interactions which I cared about. Hence why golden age is peak berserk and it goes downhill apart from the art and guts's development.
I was glad when you first picked Berserk: I respect your work as a reviewer and this is by far my favourite story (not just manga), so it is really nice to see someone experiencing it for the first time.

Seeing Guts willing to risk hurting himself again by accepting new comrades-in-arms after acknowledging his utter helplessness in taking care of Casca was beautiful
What made Guts' new group stand out from the previous one is because of how _broken_ they are as people and that they're able to mutually heal through their own scars by simply sticking together
The 2 page spread that miura does for guts when he gets the berserker armor are some of my favorite pieces of artwork ever done. Because its both beautiful and terrifying in his display of power.
I love how the Editor hinted at knowing more than Mark in that the Cursed Child and Griffith are tied together as one.
I haven't seen berserk or read it, but mark has really sparked my interest with these videos. Glad to see it's return, keep it up!

Love that these are coming out again. Thanks for the great content and kudos for hanging in there during the dark month of December. I remember when I first absolutely fell in love with Berserk definitively and it was during this arc. The character writing was absolutely on point. Also, I remember looking this up a long time ago when I first encounter Schierke. Its a German rooted name that is pronounced "sheer-kah". I could be wrong as it was a while ago.

Really enjoy hearing your take on all of the characters at this point in the story.
If I remember correctly, this is where Miura went to ask for help. Starting from middle of this arc, Umino Chica (Honey and Clover and 3 Gatsu no Lion mangaka) started helping him with character writing, dialogues and even some art.
Schierke is the perfect example of Chica's influence in Berserk, as her appearance coincides with testomony of Miura going to meet Umino Chica. Her character is very similar to what Miura sees in Umina Chica, and something she has used to fuel her two long running series, as well as impacting the writing of the other characters in a way, in Miura's words, he felt trapped in.
Fantasia might never be finished by his design, but the early part of the arc feels like a step above somehow (as if Berserk wasn't already incredible enough), and with multiple interviews of him, he seems to credit her.

I dont think Griffith got tortured becuase of this things he did to charolette lol, he got tortured because the king wanted to sleep with his daughter lol.
It's both. But even if the King didn't have the hots for Charlotte, Griffith would have probably just been executed
its not even that griffith raped her (which he PROBABLY did, people argue about it), its that 1) the king's a freaking perv and 2) the king doesn't like the idea that a mere commoner like griffith touched his daughter (who the king incidentally also wants to fuck because, again, gross perv). SO regardless of griffith's actions, he was punished because ultimately the king was an asshole
Griffith was totally captured because he slept with charlotte. The king was mad because it was a commoner and his daughter was defiled before marriage. Griffith had it good. With the way things were going all he had to do was just wait and he probably would’ve been able to marry charlotte and eventually succeed as the king the right way. The kind didn’t start acting all demented until Griffith messed up.
I don’t think that I have ever been so entertained and influenced to buy a sponsered product than I was for G-Fuel during this video

The page of him acknowledging his new friends is when I realised I'm witnessing the greatest character development in all of Japanese fiction.

I really loved the fact that Guts finally got a group of friends again it made me smile man
this is my absolute favorite part of Berserk. Muira reinvented the series here and it was a really positive, refreshing change. His loss is so keenly felt. :(
The art in this arc has some of the best in the series and all time. Also the Berserker armor is such a fascinating/dope power up because it acts as a cursed object.
That shot of Griffith standing menacingly with swords surrounding him is my favorite panel in the entire series
You know I’m watching game of thrones right now for the first time and I’m starting to think if they made a live action remake of berserk on the scale of game of thrones it may be the best thing ever
They wouldn’t be able to pull it off. It’s too high-fantasy. But in a hypothetical world where it can be perfectly adapted with a nigh-unlimited budget and extremely faithful writing, yes, it would be the best thing ever. Especially if they could find someway to give it the grittiness and realism that’d come with live action AND also find a way to convey the complexity, emotion and beauty that Miura’s artwork does. Not sure how they could all that but it’s fun to imagine.

In a previous review, you said you typically don’t talk about the fight scenes in a story, since they’re usually just eye candy and not story significant. But I’m so happy you brought up Guts vs Zodd! That fight is incredible in every way, and I’m so happy you made an exception for this one. Also, the music transition and sword clang right before were so good, they nearly gave me a stroke from pure hype. So good!

This arc was when the art was at its peak
I think the style of the art was definitely at its peak, the art itself was still fantastic however. Just look at the panels when Schierke and Farnese enter Casca’s subconscious. One of my favorite panels in that part of the arc in all the story.
I have been needing this series again like a man in the sahara needs more water.
I have not read this myself and only seen "quick" series wide reviews where each arc was not focused on.
2016/2017 Beserk covered some stuff but clearly not enough. And well that's where the anime ends. At a point that may be a spoiler to mention since I type this at the beginning before watching through.

I can't understate how much I love Farnie. She's the ultimate mom-friend to Casca. Never before have I read a character who does such a massive 180 in such a short time. Especially when it's so perfectly realistic. At no point in time does it feel rushed, wrong, or out of place.

am I the only one who think the chunk of story he covered is condensed a little too much like this should have been longer considering the amount of story we just covered. I feel like he missed alot of good character development moments and some pretty big plot points. not a bad vid by any stretch just feel we missed alot

I won't mention anything about the story that you haven't seen just wanted to say that outright. Mark some good points here and I know this is just a brief synopsis of the story but you missed so many vital points and are completely misinterpreting some parts of the story. Firstly Griffith didn't save Casca those were the actions of the demon child, as they now share the same body he was acting out of protection for his mother as he has displayed many times in the conviction arc, it's why Casca was reaching out in longing towards Griffith, she could feel her son, This isn't Griffith, it's not a "mind game" that is beneath Griffith at this point, what purpose would it even serve. And Griffith left the battle because he realises his body harbours another soul he says as much. And why are you just glossing over vital pieces of Information like the beating heart of the boy that Griffith feels? And Miura even adds the panel of Griffith saving Casca from the debree alongside Griffith thinking about the boy to emphasise the demon child's interference. Did you not understand that the demon child became the vessel for his incarnation? Miura hints that the demon child is influencing Griffith here.
And I don't think Guts's relishes killing demons and being in that dark place, but that was his way of coping with his trauma, he was feeding his rage and revenge he was blinded by it, but he realises it was all for nothing and what matters is Casca and he hates himself for leaving her. He didn't just "decided to care" as you put it and cease his violent acts. You talk as if that's who Guts really is but he's not at all, he always cared about Casca, but the eclipse traumatized him, it led him down a dark path mentally, and the beast of darkness is the leftover vestige of that trauma and pain. It still resides deep down without him, revenge is still there and will always be there. The beast is a mental thing personified for the viewer.
And I wouldn't really relate anything to gambino, Cascas fear of being touched, specifically comes from the eclipse not what Guts did, she is afraid of male touch due to the events of the eclipse it's shown when Guts first tries to touch her. I'm still watching the video as I'm writing but damn you are sprinting through the story. It seems you are just talking about whatever you feel like. You completely skipped Qlipoth and slan and the implications of her manifestation and those entire eventts you didn't even mention flora and the huge knowledge we gain about the Berserk world from her and everything in between. And you didn't mention the Berserker armours intial form being a Skull helmet and Skullknights connection to the armour, and the helmet changing form into the beasts shape is a huge hint at what the armour is.
And it's never stated she will be born anew or anything SK doesn't mention how bringing the old Casca back will affect the current Casca. And what SK says he's referring to "What you want may not be what she wants" it means she is like this for a reason and if you try to force her out of her recursion and the recesses of her mind it might be a negative for Casca she may not want to come back she might not want to accept what happened. If you try to fix something that is broken it may never be the same again is the implication here.
Okay so you didn't see the connection between the little boy and Guts and Casca. I don't blame you it's kinda subtle I guess. But I think one character says "they look like a family" and of course Cascas instant connection with the boy.

you missed a huge part where Griffith says something like it must have been that child that fused with my vessel. It explains why Griffith would even attempt to save casca and was spelled out for you then, otherwise youd have to make leaps to even figure out why Griffith as a character would even do that.

My personal favourite Arc. The world of Berserk expanded A LOT. Griffith re-appears. Guts gets the Berserker Armor, gets a lot of character development etc.
