From the comments, TIL I learned that stun-timer and the like are new additions, but seem to be quite well accepted! JMR and N0tail are a lot of fun to talk to, I wanted to hear more N0tail PUB-grief experiences though. That's the experience that binds all of us together - we all got griefed in PUB's (we're never the griefers)
Similar to outposts, bounty runes, water runes, neutral items etc. - these changes made the game easier/harder and people debated if we need these mechanics in dota. Just like the fountain hook - amazing to watch, but could be done by handful of players. Got patched out the next day Navi won an important match with it in TI. Also zooming out was possible for a long time (and could still be) by modifying the console. As I know, it is not bannable, because a lot of people did that for years and nothing ever happened to them. Valve could have been removed this feature, not sure.
grubby, have you checked out jocko talking about making calls in high pressure/stress situations? in his case in real combat as a seal commander, but it's right up your alley imo!

@JMR Luna thanks for the reply! It's the first year of the podcast so of course everyone is learning. Being nervous is natural, anybody would be. Keep it up, we'll keep listening
@JMR Luna I believe you know how to "read the room" perfectly. When you have more introverted guests, you handle it accordingly and when you have guests with stronger verbal skills you let it flow. Don't read too much into negative comments about it being otherwise. Enjoying your weekly podcasts!!
The reason I love Dota 2 was the ability to explore, symphony of skills and great individual or team plays. I always put winning last and rather just enjoy the game.
Great episode and the discussion about enemy mana bar visibility is interesting and reminds me a bit about the controversy that surrounded the stun/root/silence/disarm status bar that was added 5 or 6 years ago. A lot of players thought it was dumbing the game down a bit by showing these effects, but after some time I think we all can agree that it's great because it just adds some much needed clarity to a game that is so chaotic when fights are occurring - and it just makes it more easy for players, casters and spectators to see what is going on in these hectic moments. Also when they introduced status resistance, this status bar is very helpful, as it is otherwise impossible to know the exact time some heroes are affected by the various status effects. Showing the mana bar would be nice and I don't think it will take anything away from the game, because in many situations you will still need to click on an enemy hero to see the number values of the mana bar, before you make a decision to engage in order to see if the enemy has mana for his spells.
Mana bar will definitely impact the game and affect different heroes in unfair ways. The status bar is helpful because it's something that was not there before and introduced. So, not only do the team that is stunning the enemy know how long the disable will last, the person getting stunned knows exactly how long they will be stunned. It was a piece of information missing for either side and was introduced for both sides to take advantage of. Mana pool is an info already available for allies but not for enemy. And it will affect the game. It will affect heroes like Storm. Sure you check to see his mana pool even now, but glance value is a huuuge deal. The half second it takes you now to look at his pool now will be available even if he quickly passes in and out of vision. A lot of spell casting supports will get affected too. It's not really a question of dumbing down a game. It's a question of introducing new features that could unequally affect heroes.
@@lalfakzualahnamte2021 it is dumbing down the game and make it more accessible to new players since olayers are leaving league massively because of 'too much dumbing down of the game'. dota is the masterace game. Keep it that way
4:05 The thing about this that notail is talking about is that every player sees the game differently and an individual player not seeing the same thing as you will lead to really bad results if you try to force the play you want out of them. Which is pretty true if you think about it in the context of even just a pub. I think the simplest example is a team fight initiation or pick at various ranks. If you see a good engage opportunity, but your ES or Tide doesn't blink in for it in that micro second, it's already gone and you can't communicate it in time. They simply have to be able to see the opportunity and go in on their own AND also have the knowledge that their team is paying attention and will back them up. The game is dang stressful and taxing on your conscious brain power. Imagine that there's an ES with blink. Everyone has seen a "good engage" on paper where the ES echoslams like 4 guys and a bunch of creeps, but then he doesn't have enough damage to kill them all and gets 5v1ed into oblivion in half a second after the stuns wear off and then the ES goes "gg nob team". When the ES technically had the information to see his allies dispersing or not being near him, but hasn't practiced checking for where his allies are and what THEY want to do in that moment. ES might want to go in, but AM might want to finish his heart first. Ember has no mana and needs to base first. etc.
really love when grubby talks, his vocabulary usage is up notch. I can hardly remember anyone from non-english speaking country that have that many of words to describe a situation, not to mention that detail emotion description. He can really thrive in psychological area.
Funny how you mention zoom. In South Korea, they did not play dota 1 as much because there was a spin-off (still a wc3 custom) called Chaos with many of the same heroes and spells, but it had zoom out capability. That’s why so few players play dota 2, they just never had a big dota 1 community.
29:06 i mean its true for all ppl when u criticise doesn't mean all plays are equal and all plays are equally bad and some are worse, you can criticise someone correctly, it is more so that all ppl can criticise each other at the same time, and some thing can be more easily fixed which is easier to get angry abt and why getting angry has more sense

Players get upset about literally everything. You build an item they don't like, they rage. You choose your own ability build, they rage. Butttt when you apologize for being inexperienced or making mistakes, players suddenly become very supportive and accommodating.
I honestly think as games scale down their difficulty and increase their ease of access they become less successful over time. When you simplify the gameplay loop it becomes monotonous and unplayable. A correlation to this theory I believe has to do with community as well. I use WoW as a prime example, the downfall of the subscription/game albeit still hugely successful can be correlated to diminishing gameplay difficulty around Cataclysm times. People didn't have to 25 man raid anymore. Removing a big difficulty gameplay loop of having to interact with people to get things done. This is also the time Blizzard was bought out. 2 years later what is one of the hottest game's in the industry (Dark Souls, yes Demon's Souls did come out first in 2009 unironically) and is now a hugely successful franchise all in the name of being difficult, subversive and punishing game play. That would be the Souls series. I think game companies are strongly forgetting that a lot of the magic in these games is difficulty and community. You give people challenge and camaraderie and support and foster that. You'll have a game that grows consistently and stays around forever (Counter Strike is a solid example of this however has their faults).
Zoom out - not a fan, camera control is a fundamental mechanics that should remain the same. Like turn rate, it was a constraint initially, but grew into major competitive facet. Mana bars - why not. Clicking on enemy heroes will still exist in the game bc items need to be checked. Stun/silence bars were added and they are fine.
I watched alot of videos that tells me how to individually Play better in Dota, or how to play teamfights better, but no one put emphasis on communication and I think its great advice to not micromanaging people but say look at mid/at some hero and let them do rest.
So that was always what was the hardest part of dota 2 against something like LoL for me, the zoom in is high and you have to be aware of things that are 2, sometimes 3 screens away from you, in LoL there was nearly nothing that could hit you outside one screen. I dont take it as a bad or good, but zoom out would make dota way easier.
Why not make those Zoom-out and Mana on all heroes be just in spectator/coach mode or whatever they use for casters? You can do both sides then, pander to the lack of content by adding the mana for watchers, while still keeping the base skill floor by not implementing it to the actual gamestate. Maybe it's just not codeable without another overhaul because of Valve spaghetti code...
#Grubby Hey yo! Pro-tip here, You can assign a button to showcase recent event (ping by teammates) on a specific hotkey, like in WC3, it used to be a "spacebar". So next time when people ping like crazy and say "rapier/gem" just "spacebar" to center view on it!
Nah, I don't think Dota 2 should make the opponent's mana pool visible. There are just so much skills ingame that could turn the tide on one snap, and it's the player's responsibility to check on their opponents by actually clicking on them, and then making the decision for flight-or-flight. This is a game that you're forced to multitask anyway
What a great interview, big fan of Grubby and you guys got some cool topics out of this interaction... Then Grubby started throwing shade at Pineapple Pizza haters, and I realised we must RISE UP AND DESTROY HIM MY BROTHERS. The insignificant choice of adding pineapple to pizza CANNOT be tolerated.
I stopped dota for more than a year. Yesterday I reinstalled and had thé same impression than the camera was "too much" zoom in. Also I told my teammates at start of an (unranked) game I was coming from a year break. Some juste answer that was a excuse to be Bad, and keep blaming until we lost. So much to rely with what grubby is saying this podcast lol.
It would be awesome if unranked had more tools available to simplify the game for new players. Like Grubby mentioned seeing mana pool for example. Finding some extra areas that could simplify the game for new players would help dota in a long run. We used to have the AOE circle that people could set as permanent visual around the hero (thanks AdmiralBulldog), or zoom out option. Both of these were possible adjustments with console. But removed after a while or adjusted globally for the game. Now imagine its allowed in unranked and in ranked it has set restrictions for tools like that. For the game of such mental capacity, it will make it more "fun" for people to get hooked into it for sure
Also autocast spells. And automove the hero. And auto lasthit creeps. Woukd be a great game. Press F to Dota. Wow! He pressed F! What a play... he Dota'd so hard, the best F presser in Eu.
Mana is simple for me: The information is already there. If i am supposed to have information, make it accessible. It would be different if you couldnt see Mana at all, but clicking on someone is not interesting, maybe not even skill. Its just apm. But theres not really a mental aspect to it, you dont need to think about how to obtain the information.
Not seeing the mana bar was the norm but it felt "cheaty" or "unfair" watching grubby streams and there's a mana bar visible after I spent years having to click the heros. Very similar to the stun duration bar, spent years timing my stuns with other heros for max efficiency without it that now its feels unfair
its not cheaty, its an improvement, lets say you mastered that specific thing for years and when the game makes it easier, new people is gonna learn it for months or weeks. its just unfortunate for peole like you but its easier to access specially for new players
not going to lie i've been a huge EG fan (screw them) and always thought what fly did to OG was messed up. I used to think OG was the enemy but over the years I've gained so much respect for them. Family first, trust each other, win together. Notail is a legend and they will always be remembered as legends. I hope they get back together and make another run for it. Monkey Business has made me a huge fan of OG.
I dont like saying its sacrifices i disagree to that Idol Notail. Its just PASSION JOB OR JOB FOR NEEDS. When you're grinding its already doing what you love then if you're already on a team you'd dream of that right? Its because youre a Champ you think differently. Everyone who ranks Immortal or divine they always play but they dont see it as a sacrifices. Enjoying this game is different
Zoom out being accepted in the west is what killed WC3 watching experience for me, the mana bars being visible also feels sucky and I wouldn't like it in Dota. I'll be the first one to say I SUCK at both WC3 and Dota but these "worthless" skills is what makes me awestruck watching the pros. The devis is in the detail as they say
If you want the largest player base, make it easy and flashy, because midwits and simple minded are vast majority of humantiy and are easiest to entertain. Always harping on about getting new players might not be a good thing. Unless of course you're just interested in making more money and not about making a great game.

It would be different if you couldnt see Mana at all, but clicking on someone is not interesting, maybe not even skill. Its just apm. But theres not really a mental aspect to it, you dont need to think about how to obtain the information.
I only play unranked too.
@@harlex1175 no. Get good
I imagine a team of +30 Dota veterans and Grubby in a TI - maybe '24 or '25.
rub the grub to climb in your elos
Do one with gorgc
i see grub(e) klic
If you want to have fun with dota again play ability draft. It's hilarious but 90% of the time the games are very one sided.
not going to lie i've been a huge EG fan (screw them) and always thought what fly did to OG was messed up. I used to think OG was the enemy but over the years I've gained so much respect for them. Family first, trust each other, win together. Notail is a legend and they will always be remembered as legends. I hope they get back together and make another run for it. Monkey Business has made me a huge fan of OG.
Dude, everyone moved on already. You should too.
@@pluckyleon6640 I have. I’m just saying loving the content OG has been putting out and have much respect for their org. J is an incredible leader
Crit left OG on amicable terms WTF, it was Fly and s4 who left right before ti 8.
W Grubby.
can johan please coach me for 2-3 games? maybe i would finally reach archon. :)
Is the same like in the kitchen this make dota 2 so cool!
Pudge not a tank kek.
🙏great content as always
Dota is a weird game
Zoom out being accepted in the west is what killed WC3 watching experience for me, the mana bars being visible also feels sucky and I wouldn't like it in Dota.
I'll be the first one to say I SUCK at both WC3 and Dota but these "worthless" skills is what makes me awestruck watching the pros.
The devis is in the detail as they say
FAKE 5 LIKE PUPPEY LOL
Can you from now on ask them nicely to not use the word "like" every other 3 sentences.
If you want the largest player base, make it easy and flashy, because midwits and simple minded are vast majority of humantiy and are easiest to entertain. Always harping on about getting new players might not be a good thing. Unless of course you're just interested in making more money and not about making a great game.
