I made this according to the recipe, except: 1) I added a bit of salt to the topping mix, and 2) added nutmeg to the topping mix. The result was outstanding. Next time I make this, I’ll amp up the cinnamon. This is a real winner.
"You're gonna definitely wanna let this cool a little bit. I mean, that's really between you and the first two or three layers of skin on the roof of your mouth."
This turned out amazing. I made 2 batches, one made this way (Except for the store didn't have grape nuts, so I substituted granola and chopped pecans) and a batch of peach crisp made with the raw fruit/cold butter method. This allowed for empirical testing. The pre-cooking of the apples in the sauce is genius, it makes the consistency perfect. I added too much water, and it didn't matter, it just made it necessary to cook the apples and sauce a bit longer. Chef John never disappoints!
Love the sound of your voice and the efficiency of your teaching! Tried this recipe and although I was skeptical about the grape nuts, it was indeed the secret to crispy/crunchy! Thanks for sharing this recipe. By the way... GREAT video quality!
I had grape nuts a few days ago for the first time and it made me think of this recipe. They were served for breakfast on top of natural greek yoghurt with honey and sliced bananas. I dont know where the restaurant got them from because we're in the UK but it was delicious. I can see why they would be great in an apple crisp.
I loved the...voice over was it? Idk but you sounded really cheery and casual, it made the video so enjoyable to watch. I am going to try this for fall!
Don't have access to grape nuts so I just doubled the oats instead , and it was still delicious and crispy. This was the best recipe I've tried yet for apple crisp. Thank you, Chef John!
YES! I thought I was the only person who adds Grapenuts to her fruit crisp topping. I have to try your trick with the apples too (nothing is worse in a beautiful apple crisp than uncooked apples). Thanks Chef John, and as always, we enjoy!
That casserole dish has gotten a LOT of use over the years.😀 Made this today and it is so good. Added a pinch of salt +more spices with a little less sugar. didn't have any Lemon so used a little Apple Cider Vinegar. Might try and soften the grape nuts a little the next time as they are really really crunchy.
Today I made this, for the second time this fall. I doubled the recipe each time, and that works fine. Today i put in fresh cranberries, along with the apples. I did not saute the fruit in the pan with the sauce. 40 minutes of baking for the double batch cooks the fruit just fine. Yum.
OMG I made this yesterday and was in HEAVEN!!!!!! SOOOOO GOOOOD! My kids loved it and I will be making this again for the holidays, but for now, happy happy joy joy!!! mmmhmmm!
Hi Chef John! I'm from Portugal so I couldn't find the grape nuts and I didn't wanted to use just the oatmeal so I decided to go for GRANOLA ! I was a little reluctant but surprisingly it came out great :D Also I had never ate granola or any type of recipe similar to this one, but I've got to say that this is my favorite dessert right now!, although caloric but who really cares ? So delicious! Thank you so much :)
Cool, on the grape nuts! My mother used to eat that cereal and I tried some and I felt like I was chewing on rocks! But she got on a kick of making that grapenut pudding, and that is really good😍 thx John!
Thank you for your excellent channel. I have tried several of your recipes with great success. In my version, I didnt have Grape Nuts but used granola instead. Great crunch! Also added a 1/4 cup of dried cranberries rehydrated in brandy and water 50/50. Also used brandy in place of water when cooking the apples. Fantastic results. Thanks again Chef John.
Made this instead of ambrosia at Thanksgiving....the family has me bringing the apple crisp forChristmas !Thank you for your tutorials... Merry Christmas 🎅
I substituted raw sugar in this recipe since I'm both a confirmed foodie and health nut. The only problem I came across while making this recipe was the caramelizing of the raw sugar. After heating the sugar for awhile I became impatient because it wasn't reverting to the sauce like texture shown in the video which ultimately behooved me to learn about the science of sugar caramelization. The problem I finally realized was that I wasn't heating the sugar on a high enough setting to allow it to essentially decay from the hard candy form to its subsequent sauce form. At last, I was able to properly caramelize the sugar and finish the recipe which was I must say Applicious! ;)
thank you for taking the time to share your great recipes with us! I will definitely be trying this out very soon ... apple crisp is the best dessert in my humble opinion :) Thank you chef john
Several days of snow coming our way and I thought, oh well, it's time to make apple crisp. You did not warn me to not test the topping, because if you do, one might eat more of it than you should because its sooooo good. Grape Nuts, I'm glad I live in America where we grow grape nuts. I tried to see how much a box of grape nuts cost 10 years ago. I never got my answer but I did see that there was a grape nut shortage back in 2021.
I did make it for Thanksgiving, and it was delicious! I followed the recipe exactly and we served it with some vanilla ice cream. My family wanted it again for Christmas dessert =]
Chef John, I iust simply love your recipes. Just finished baking the apple crisp and can't wait to try it. Thanks a bunch Chef for your efforrs. Rosemary
This look so yummy. Not sure if I would use the grape nuts myself, but it still looks tasty! I would love it if you would do an empanada filling recipe, I usually Find the dough at my local supermarket but I would love to see what you would d with the filling!
Thank-you Chef John I was having a sad day your voice & humour add great recipices cheered me up enormously. Going to try it with some local peaches 🍑 Thanks again Best line ever between you & the first two or three layers on the roof of your mouth
i've been watching your videos for the past few months and my friend and i tried your recipe for the first time. it was AMAZING! thank you for the recipe! :D
Yes, Chef John is an amazing cook. But..idk what it is about him. I could be in the worst mood ever and hearing his voice brightens my day. For that, I LOVE you, Chef.
I do a Chef John apple dessert mashup. I make this apple filling, but top it with the cobbler topping from the Crisp Peach Cobbler. Don’t get me wrong, the crisp topping is really good, and on a deeper level it’s pretty dang impressive that he turns Grape-Nuts into edible food, but that cobbler topping is perfection.
I made this tonight and it was excellent or better: as good as it looks in Chef John's video. I also experienced the accidental candy and like it very much. Thanks for a great lesson. Ron in Boston
Mmmmmmmmm DOGGY! I *finally* got around to trying out this one - it's been on my short-list forever and ever. I made the whole thing in a 4.5 qt dutch oven - no pan to clean up later. With it with some added blueberries, about 2 Tbls of very finely minced ginger (yes that's a lot) and crushed up sprouted wheat and cornflake cereal (closest I had) instead of grapenuts. KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK! By the way, for recipes like this where we're combining white and brown sugar in the same stage, I love just using white (or raw) sugar and adding a Tbls or two (I usually go a little heavy cuz I love it) of molasses. :D
Check out the recipe: www.allrecipes.com/Recipe/220785/Crispiest-Apple-Crisp/
This was the best apple crisp recipe on RUclips hands down , and I been on here all day watching them lol
I made this according to the recipe, except: 1) I added a bit of salt to the topping mix, and 2) added nutmeg to the topping mix. The result was outstanding. Next time I make this, I’ll amp up the cinnamon. This is a real winner.
I’ll do you one more, I add 2 tablespoons of wheat germ for extra richness
"You're gonna definitely wanna let this cool a little bit. I mean, that's really between you and the first two or three layers of skin on the roof of your mouth."
🤣🤣
And like HOT pizza, it STICKS there long enough!!
This turned out amazing. Nice to know that.. coz i was also wondering to use Granola as i couldnt find grape nuts at store
Yeah. Grape Nuts is a non-starter for me. Finely chopped nuts is a good call.
Love the sound of your voice and the efficiency of your teaching! Tried this recipe and although I was skeptical about the grape nuts, it was indeed the secret to crispy/crunchy! Thanks for sharing this recipe. By the way... GREAT video quality!
Sounds like Chef John channeled his inner Homer Simpson with apple candy piece he grabbed.
lol "Mmm, accidental apple candy."
Sounds like something Homer would say.
Indeed...Mmmmmm
Sounded like Homer Simpson
I love watching your videos as they are educational and inspiring for anyone who loves food. Your commentary is great too. Thank you!

Just made this seeing as apple crisp is my favorite dessert, and the family went nuts. Great recipe

Don't have access to grape nuts so I just doubled the oats instead , and it was still delicious and crispy. This was the best recipe I've tried yet for apple crisp. Thank you, Chef John!
The grape nuts makes this exceptional!! That crunch is amazing even in leftovers the next few days.
YES! I thought I was the only person who adds Grapenuts to her fruit crisp topping. I have to try your trick with the apples too (nothing is worse in a beautiful apple crisp than uncooked apples). Thanks Chef John, and as always, we enjoy!
Such a great idea! What about adding some chopped sweet and spicy pecans?
I just made this two days ago, delicious as always! I was requested to make another today. I like having an excuse to wait your videos!
My mom used to make apple crisp using a jar of applesauce! It was the '70's after all. ;)
You always make me smile ☺️
I really love your personality!

Thank you for your excellent channel. I have tried several of your recipes with great success.

This is a great recipe, John! I doubled the amount of cinnamon and excluded the grape nuts and it was really good!
@humannaturedj My pleasure.
Made this instead of ambrosia at Thanksgiving....the family has me bringing the apple crisp forChristmas !Thank you for your tutorials...

Ya know... I don't really like cooked apples. Apple pie, ect. but Apple Crisp is actually pretty good. And this looks real tasty.
Honestly thank you so much. Made at x giving here in Canada and was a knockout hit! Big follower of the channel. Thanks for everything you do/post

You are the best you tube channel on any planet
This Apple Crisp is delicious, not overly sweet. The topping is my new go to crumble topping.
I substituted raw sugar in this recipe since I'm both a confirmed foodie and health nut. The only problem I came across while making this recipe was the caramelizing of the raw sugar. Looks scrumptious!

This look so yummy. Not sure if I would use the grape nuts myself, but it still looks tasty! I would love it if you would do an empanada filling recipe, I usually Find the dough at my local supermarket but I would love to see what you would d with the filling!

I bet peaches were really good, especially with homemade whip cream! 😋
Mmmmmmmmmm, this looks soooooo good!
i added walnuts to the crisp and it came out beyond amazing!!!!!!!!!
+marthacvd That seems like a better idea than grape nuts.
Just made this!!! MAN!!! It was sooooooo good. Gotta try it people.....:)
I FREAKING LOVE GRAVEL! Best breakfast cereal ever. Why didn't i think of using it in my crisps?....Thank you chef. Thank you.
Brilliant! I'd only suggest subbing steel-cut oats for rolled to add to the crispiness.
This looks amazing ! I will definately be making it.

I LOVE grape nuts - esp on oatmeal, to keep it crunchy! Great plan to use two or three apple varieties to maximize taste and texture.
Chef John, it doesn’t matter how many times you say it, but i always take a bite immediately after it is done :)
My mouth is watering.
Who would dislike chef john's videos? I really wonder...
I don't waste time anymore, I hit the like button before the video even starts.
*_Accidental Apple Candy_* was my college band name!
