    If you want more young people then make it affordable. The activity is losing thousands of talented young people every year. Thats what's up!

      DCA has already been much more affordable than DCI corps. For instance, I paid $1250 for my DCA season this year as opposed to the $5000 that some of the top DCI corps are charging.

      I'm not sure if they plan on ever competing in DCI all age, but I know northern lights has been working on keeping dues low, they were $150 this season but only went to two venues, so idk what their future would look like financially.

      @@morgannowlen8375 I probably paid around 6k in 2019 if you sum the travel costs of getting to camps. They also really like to require that you have a $100 Hammond Design mouthpiece that was never mentioned in the contract (among other fun extras you are pained to pay for after draining your bank for tuition.)

      @@Jekkinour fees are only $500 and that includes 5 competitions, DCI and DCA World Championships, 3 HBCU Band Competitions, and more totaling about 16 performances, and 4 out of state trips. Govenaires in MN only charge $400 as they have a similar funding model with high assets and minimal debt with sustainable funding.

    I really like this. After people age out of DCI, many people if not all, feel deep melancholic feelings about it all ending and the abandonment it comes.

    Really hope DCI invests more in all-age and keeps it around. Getting all-age corps around the country to make it more doable would be a win win situation for a lot of people, both young and old. I’m in Florida and know I’d kill to March all-age if he had a Florida corps

    I think it's a cool thing... there are hardly any senior corps left compared to 3 decades ago. For corps that don't have the potential to tour bigtime, this is a great start. DCA corps are still better than most college marching bands & the marching talent pool in general gets wider every year.

    • @anthonykaiser974
      @anthonykaiser974 Год назад

      College marching band and DCs are two very different operations. I marched 3 years at Purdue early 90s. We reserved slots for drum corps folks because they had lived and breathed the job all summer, if not several. One primarily exists to support the football team, consists basically of members of the student body (though technically that could be their only class), rehearses maybe 2 hrs/day weekdays, and plays two different field shows each game, one that is new every game. The other for its own sake, can get talent from the whole country, maybe the world, and basically does one field show all season, and your entire life for the summer is marching and playing. We had zero music majors until recently.

    There should’ve been more support for All Age and Sound Sport a long time ago. But yes more people would love to join including me if it was more affordable than what it is now.

    Hopefully DCI can get corporate sponsorship to help the all-age groups. It would be great to get more youth involved and finals before they head to their high school or college marching band camps.

    When will DCI announce how they plan to schedule Open Class, World Class & All-Age Class championships? Many of us have already ordered tickets for next year without any mention of the All-Age prelims/finals. I can't see anything happening on Sunday as the Colts (FB) have home pre-season games every other year the day after DCI.

    For Mr. Carr to say that in the past the average age of DCA membership was 50-55 shows that in at least this topic he has no idea what he's talking about. My DCA career started in 1972 when I was 16 & extended thru 2000 competing on the field & up till 2011 in Mini-Corps. I would estimate the average age from when I started till mid 80's to be mid 20' to 30's with an increasing percentage of younger membership. I don't mean to sound like I think Mr. Carr is incompetent I'm sure he's worked very hard to keep DCA afloat but just not accurate in this regarded. I really don't like the direction they are going but I understand it. Something had to be done & I'm sure many thing were tried behind the scenes that few know about. Just always remember that back in 1970 +71 when the top "Junior" corps minds came together to try & make something better they looked to DCA & said this is our model, this is where we start. The "Seniors" led the way just as they did in the 50's & 60's. If I could I would be in Rochester this weekend to say goodby to a huge part of my life. I wish nothing but good things for the new DCI All-Age Division.

      Yes I understand that. But my original thought which I really didn't want to mention but I guess I'm going to is if he got that wrong, it makes me wonder how long has he actually been associated with DCA? That's NOT to infer that someone that might be relatively new to DCA couldn't do a good job at the helm. I would think if that was the case he would be voted out at the annual election. @@gloriouslyimperfect

      I went to prelims yesterday. Made a one day round trip from central Ohio. 6 plus hours one way. Made for an early morning bedtime today. As a former member, I went knowing that it will be the last true DCA-like inals show . It was an older crowd for sure. Somewhat reserved. I think for 2 reasons. One, the top groups are dci lite so to speak. Very good, and the younger crowd should dig them. Two, I think reality is setting in that this type of weekend will never occur for most of this crowd. They more than likely will not go to Indy to watch a Saturday morning show that will play below second fiddle to everything going on in Indy on a Saturday.

      You beat me to the punch with your observation. I started marching in senior drum corps in 1966 at the age of 15. From 1972 thru 1976 I was a member of the Hamburg Kingsmen competing in DCA. We had just a handful of members who were over 30. The bulk were in their twenties with a few teens.

      Yes, I think if I was running DCI right now, I would concentrate on keeping the activity stabilized and try to grow more corps, not just Soundsport and the like. Losing SCV and knowing that some other corps are not as financially stable as they should be can bring them down as well.

      Drum corps is historically brass, that’s why it’s called “drum and bugle corps” not marching band. To add woodwinds would kinda defeat and all together end the history of drum and bugles corps.
