Casio Protrek: The ABCs

- I’ve not really found any good full histories of the casio pro trek range, so its seemed rip for the illuminating watches treatment. This video provides a relatively comprehensive view of early sensor watches, the first triple sensor with the ATC-1100 and DPX-500 and the whole pathway to today where we have quad sensor, smart watches with the WSD range and the much more compact triple sensor version 3 in the really coole PRW-30 range (I recently bought one with the STN-LCD display - its ace!). I try to pull out some of the mountaineers, climbers, kayakers and even astronauts that have worn Pro Treks, and alluded to a few cool film references (Robert DeNiro wears one - you’ll have to see the video to know the film…).
I’ve relied on some amazing resources to pull together this history with a particularly notable one being the Casio Fan Mag website as well as obviously the Casio Protrek website (including heavy use of web archive). I’ve looked to provide references throughout so let me know if any issues with images / video snips used and I’ll look to address.

Wow! Great!
Good grief... I never knew that the Pro Trek series had such an illustrious history. Must have taken ages to research this! Definitely deserves a like and a sub!
Ha ha Thankyou. Nothing like a bit of over research!!
Phenomenal work as always Gordon. A comprehensive guide to your selected subject, excellently researched and communicated in such an accessible and enjoyable way 👏👏👏👏
The Pro Trek range was a total blind spot for me, but not anymore! I wasn’t expecting to see such variety. There are even analogue Pro Treks! Who knew? 😂
Thanks man! Yes was a total blind spot for me too which is what motivated me to do the video.
Really love these very well researched deep dive videos you do of my favourite affordable watch brands I grew up with back in the 70s and beyond
Thank you so much for the super thanks!! That’s massively generous of you!
Outstanding video mate, new sub from Mexico
De Niro with fish Casio. Hell yeah!
Sensor watches like the Citizen Ana-Digi temp area what got me into watch collecting. Nice to see a lot of my collection in context throughout the years. My personal favorite is still the PRW-2500. No other watch has so much info available at a glance from the home display.
Oh cool. I’m a bit of a late comer to sensor watches . Still never owned an ana digi temp!
Finaly some one made video about protrek. 🤘🤙
Ha ha my pleasure! Quite a few people asked so wanted to deliver!
@@IlluminatingWatches ofcourse. I try to find reviews of prg 340. No one did that thing. Protrek and Edifice are criminaly underated. Everybody just want gshock and so many jewels are overlocked.
I've watched this probably about 30 times. Definitely helped me wrap my head around this wonderful line of watches!
I have an SGW 300 and 1000, which i got very cheap second hand.
After much research I just ordered a PRG 240. Seems a pinnacle of the protrek design.
Thanks for a great video!
Would love to see a video about protrek appearances in films!
Thanks no much!! I do have a tendency to make he videos very fast paced so occasionally needs a rewatch to fully absorb. A great choice I think!!
Aww yeah sweet finds ! Out of the 3 you got, do you say which is the least favorite?
@@0scNeu I still like the look of the 240, but it's so slow compared to the 270 which i have now, so i end up wearing the 270 the most, that newer computer is just lightening fast compared to the old one, for barometer readings and such.
One can never get "lost" when watching your videos! 😄 Brilliantly narrated and researched as always. I have a green NOS version of the watch on the right at 1:37. Unfortunately module is completely dead, but I have seen a working module for sale on eBay. Maybe someday I shall purchase and restore fully.
Thankyou as always for stopping by and taking a look. Pro trek was a big gap in my knowledge so has been a good excuse to learn the back catalog!
This was an outstanding presentation, very thoroughly researched. So many rare and unheard-of-watches uncovered in this in-depth dive.. mind blown. Impressive 👍
Thanks so much! That’s kind of you to say. Lots more where this came from! New video up soon
Wow. A detailed and well summerized video.
I can't imagine the research you've done, that's dedication.
I've always liked G-shock for it's 'tough attitude' but when it comes to Pro-trek, it's more of the adventerous 'do it all' brother.
Props to you sir.
the PRT-1400 is one of my favorite watches, very beautiful and cool
I think that may one of the few I’ve left out - d’oh
@@IlluminatingWatches ok, there's the protrek ALT-7000 this is the rarest protrek in my opinion and there are so many awesome watches from both this line and the G-SHOCK one that anyone would go crazy, even I would
Nice!! I hadn’t seen that one!
I love this video and after watching it, I realize that I am much more of a hard-core G-Shock fan than a protreck fan any day of the week. Ty.
Glad you enjoyed! Well now you know at least!
I am amazed by your effort to research into the history of watches! Well done and keep it up!
I personally have the PRX-7000T and several PRW 3500 and 3510 watches and is so happy to hear the history behind them!
Thankyou so much! I’m relatively new to the world of pro trek . I just have the prw-30 and I absolutely love it.
@@IlluminatingWatches I think your videos will inspire me to find those old sch casio! Keep doing your videos! 🔥
Lovely content as usual! Always looking forward to new videos!
Thankyou! Need to decide what the next video will be!
That was an awesome video so many of them never realised. Keep up the great work 😊
Another subscriber because this is the best Dam Casio Protrek video on youtube!
Ah wow Thankyou! Sounds like there is a need for more protrek videos!
Thanks for such an informative video.
Hats off to Casio for being such an innovative watch maker !
really wish there was a shockbase equivalent for PRO TREK watches
Would have been very helpful for this video!! Love shockbase
@@IlluminatingWatches You should do a review on the PRG 30. I can't find any videos on them at all. Which is a shame as it looks to be a very practical and subdued watch design.
Great idea. I’m not that good a reviewer though! I’m more about nerding out about history
@@IlluminatingWatches Go for it buddy. You will be fine
As a newbie to a watch, my last watch was 30 years ago, when I was 10 😂😂.
I found this video very helpful but too fast, so had to watch this few times.😅😅😅
Hats off to you & well done Buddy🎉
I finally found a Protrek PRT-50 like the one pictured in the vid.
Wow When U Say U researched is an UNDERSTATEMENT.Truly appreciate all the work U put into this.Thank u so much.Seriously needed to know as I am after a Twin Sensor & this has Answered all my ?
Aw I’m glad to hear the video helped. Yes I like the research! 🤓
Great video. I did not realise my first protrek that I bought in 1998 actually came out 2 years earlier. Around the same time I also bought the version with the step counter but I never used that feature in the end. It was not practical. I have a few protrek watches but Ive yet to get another of the ones with the slimmed down sensors. My favourite protrek is prw-5100. It's great for my travels.
Love the old protreks - but difficult for me to pull off in the every day setting with my skinny wrists - so the new one is perfect! Thanks for watching and really glad you enjoyed!
Amazing video with lot's of valuable info. Thank's for that!
Really appreciate that. Thankyou!!
Though I have little use for most of the functions, these watches are still as cool as can be. Thanks for the overview. Awesome video!
My pleasure sir. Having an outdoor activities watch just another excuse to get a different watch!
@@IlluminatingWatches I know right? Just bought a Speedo with a heart monitor thingy I'll never use, hahaha
Superb work as always dude 👍😎 i looked many many times at protreks but always more drawn to the gshocks - maybe now is the time to scratch that abc itchy spot 🤪🤪😎😎
Thanks man - get one in your life :) rude not to !
@@IlluminatingWatches yup I concur... so now which one... LOL 😎😎
Fantastic review of the sub-brand
Loving your work! Bravo 👏
Thankyou! Lots more videos where this one came from!
Great video!
THANKS!!! SO COOOOL!!!! I LOVE ALL THE OUTDOOR JOKES IN THE BEGINNING!
Great video again, still not be able to decide between a Protrek or a G-shock, thank for sharing
Thankyou! Overall I’m more g-shock , but I love my prw-30 protrek
That is an impressive and extremely informative video. Thanks for putting it together.
However, I'm surprised you missed out on one of the earliest watches to wear the Pro Trek name.. it might even be the first. The ALT-7000 (module 991) It's a twin sensor in a stainless steel case with brass pushers. My future wife gave me one for Christmas in 1994.
I'm not 100% certain but I believe this was a JDM watch. I still have mine. It works and I'm wearing it as I type this.
Great knowledge! There are highly likely gaps in this one as there was a serious lack of any end to end history online on protrek, so I was somewhat having to piece things together myself. Much appreciated and sounds like a very cool watch!!
Great research and video as usual, thanks for sharing! Protrek is an outstanding Casio line, and with the recent "downsizing" as you mentioned, some of us can begin to consider pulling the trigger on one of the recent models, they pack a lot of cool tech, and very useful for people with field related jobs like myself
Thankyou! Yes the PRW-30 is excellent !
i love them protreks and the outgear models too.if i were to pick one for myself it'll probably be one of the smaller ones like the prw/prg30 but the sgw100 is the most likely budget friendly candidate.. the prt-b50 is sometimes on sale for around $100 and that's amazing for the price.
good job with these videos, they look like a lot of work to research and put together..
i think the new prg340 was on a presale "sale" for $160 on amazon yesterday but it sold out fast..
I love the PRG-30 so can advocate that! Thanks for watching my video!
Great video, thank you!!
Thankyou! I’m glad you enjoyed
Wonderful work, thank you very much, I have a special affection for the Protrek line and for me at the height of G-Shock. I have a Prt-400 in very good condition and I am in love with the Prw 6800 that I will buy one day, actually I like many more models 😅😅😅.
I’m glad the video delivered - I know you were waiting for this one !
I love my PRW-5000T (yellow one), simple but sturdy!
Awesome watch!
Shoutout to the guy (me) for giving the idea for this video. Would appreciate it.
No problem! Done :)
Excellently Researched Interesting Video👏👏👏
Another stellar vid!
Thanks man! Need to check out your latest
Love the video
I'm new to protrek there is any cheap legendary watch in protrek lineup like f91w / dw5600 equivalent?
Not in the protrek range - but the closest thing is the casio sgw-100 which people often call the protrek lite
I have two of the hackers watches. Love it so much i dont want one to die so if one goes i always have a back up. They stand out wayy more than modern watches but the only thing that works is the compass. Just found a good deal on ebay for the 240 so its on the way. Hope i made a good decision because i want one that will last a long time and also stand out as much as my 1100s but also be fully functional unlike the 26 year old watches lol.
Nice! Yes that is a unique watch and a real piece of history!
Would you make a video about twincept types?
Thanks
I did cover quite a bit of twincept in my video on history of 90s casio. Of course it’s a possibility for a more dedicated video!
I love protreks. I currently own: Prw-30 (like yours), Prw-60 Titanium. Prw-70 Titanium (amazing features and the only one I own to have sapphire), Prw-61 (green), Prw-6600y and my next purchase is looking to be a PRG-340T-7CR (I'm a sucker for protrek titanium). I will own more proteks in the future but only if they are titanium or I can get them on those ultra comfortable combi bracelets now if I can help it. I am currently looking for an affordable way to put my Prw-30 and 61 on combi bracelets. What casio charges for OEM bracelets is criminal. 😩
I have owned a prg-650/600 safari and a prw-3000 but I traded those in to purchase other protreks. 😂 I have to say I'm a huge fan of casio solar watches and most of my watches now are either solar protreks or solar gshocks these days. Atomic time is nice but I'm just happy to get tough solar and triple sensor where possible.
Best video❤
I owned that very first watch... with that thick temp sensor.
what about the outgear line?
Hi, I need some help. I can't AC reset my PRT 35. I hope somebody can help me. There's nothing on the internet
Sorry wish I knew! Hope you can find a solution!
😮Can Anyone recommend?
Looking for a Gshock or Protrek with analog+digi, solar, 2or3 sensors
Humble thanks😅
Got an alt 6000 and 6100 still working just have to change the sensor and use ipa
Niiiiice!
Отличное видео, с удовольствием смотрел до половины. После прт-240 протреки закончились или скорее пошли не туда.
я рад, что вам понравилась половина видео
@@IlluminatingWatches видео мне понравилось целиком! просто мне нравятся более старые модели. 😉
@@Planeta-Shelezyaka ha ha oh good!!
Hello i am from Argentina, i need manual of CASIO PRT-30 please!! Very good this video ,thank you
Welcome to the channel! Hello from the UK. Sadly I don’t have a copy of the manual :(
Why the wsd f series did not continue?
I’m assuming it wasn’t a profitable line
Hackers is pretty dated now, with some real eye-rolling "tech speak," but good popcorn entertainment.
I love eye rolling tech speak :) may give it a shot for the culture
Not sure what good a Pro Trek would do for someone orbiting Earth! (Altimeter/Barometer = Sea level? Compass = useless traveling at 17,000 mph.)
My PAW 1300 still works great from 2008. Wow, I forget sometimes how many watches Casio has made over the years. Does Casio have a sample of each one?
Hackers is essential 90s core.
I’ve still not watched it. I clearly need to!
1:44 this watch was in johnny mnemonic
Okay, now i have more questions i had before watching thia video.🤷♀️🤦
The ProTrek line was originally approved by Dennis Buchinsky.
Always impressed with your references!
I have a PRG-500T, Im gonna guess it not fully Titanium and no 6 band radio.
4:06 Le Raid Gauloises would be pronounced "Rad Gall-Ways."
I’m terrible! Pronounce most things wrong!
Am in a sleeping bag on the cliffs by the ocean with my triple sensor tide model
Man that is so awesome . Something satisfying about being kitted out for the outdoors with the right watch. Jealous!
I have Casio protreak PAG 240 b
Great watch!
@@IlluminatingWatches yeah
Hackers is delightfully absurd and worth watching with that in mind.
I definitely need to watch
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰😓😓😓😓
Algorithm.
The vocal fry makes you difficult to understand.
😮Can Anyone recommend?
