- LaVette proved to give the powerhouse performance of the evening at the Kennedy Center Honors in December when she sang her unparalleled version of Love Reign Oer Me as part of the Who tribute.
The way Roger and Pete reacted...they were so moved. In awe.
Saw this live 10+ years ago. Have never forgotten it. Just electric.
We saw it live at Cafe Carlyle and I was never the same.
I just noticed at the end, Streisand turns to Townsend and says "Fantastic!". I've seen Bettye in person, and she's incredible.
This has always been my favorite song by The Who, but, I swear, Bettye LaVette makes it her own....Roger Who? Just WOW!! What a voice...what soul...what talent!!
Her singing makes my soul tremble.
This is one of the most memorable moments of the Kennedy Center Honors and I've seen many. Fantastic!
03:33 Babs (to Pete): "You wrote that?" Pete: "yeah I did"
Bettye Lavette was the Queen of Kennedy Center that night. She showed everyone else how it's supposed to be done.
One of the greatest covers I have ever heard.
Every time I hear Bettyes voice I get chills, , Such an swesome voice!
Roger demands that Love reign with a youthful arrogance. Betty begs for it with the wisdom of age. Just proof that once you have a great song, it can go many ways.
Someone's a poet. ✨
What an incredible performance!!! Her version is incredible. Impossible for me not to get chills over this song. Thank you so much Ms. Lavette, and thank you for not giving up on your career.
Love that Streisand said "that was fantastic"
I am totally amazed! One of the most moving performances I have ever seen in a live setting.
Doesn't get any better than this.
I’ve seen Bettye 4 times and she is always perfection!
Perfection.
Bettye is wonderful
great performance!!
At this moment, Pete and Roger knew exactly how Otis Redding felt, the first time he heard Aretha sing "Respect:" "“I just lost my song. That girl took it away from me."
I clearly remember watching this performance when it was first aired. I cried. Absolutely beautiful.
The one thing that gets me upset about this video every time I watch it is that she did not get a standing ovation! I got to see her perform live here in Detroit and she is absolutely astounding. She is my idol. She was very good friends with my grandad who was one of the Spinners. I have yet to meet her but I know I will one day!
she gave me chills
Where has this woman been? She shows up here and at the Lincoln Memorial concert and steals the show both times. She is amazing.
I love how at the end of this video Barbra Streisand leans over to Pete Townsend and asks him, "You wrote that?"
I guess Babs never thought to sing a Who song... Bettye is the bomb!
Saying "this shit sucks" shows how watered down music has become. This is from the heart BLUES music the way it was meant to be. Pete and Roger know the Blues when they hear it.
Amen. She's heart-stopping.
Oh my soul
What a great tribute to The Who having one of the greatest singers ever perform at Kennedy Center. Just saw her at the Hollywood Bowl in a tribute to Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra. Legendary.
Bettye LaVette is a singers singer.
Beautiful!!!
Incredible
Gorgeous!
right on!!!
loved it!
I am a huge who fan and I think she sings that song better than roger
Who ever says this is bad music, he must be having hearing problems. :P
shes been around since the sixties (before I was around) she's great isnt she?
She's the business! She's just performed at Barack Obamas Inaugural Celebration, "WE ARE ONE" at the Lincoln Memorial - hope we get to see some footage of that!
LIsten to her tune let me down easy, the original tune - check it out on you tube or "what condition my condition is in" on you tube too and THEN tell us she sucks.
what those dust bags couldn't stand up? awsome!
They were stunned
Anyone know anything about this guitarist? I just watched this after seeing the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zep and this guy played on Stairway To Heaven on that occasion.
I think it is Shayne Fontayne, he's English but been in the States for a long while
Shane Fontayne, now working with Graham Nash. A fantastic player.
Bettye is much better known in Europe than she is in the States. So Pete and Roger may very well have known who she was.
Where is the full version of this?
At the end you could see Barbara Streisand say to Pete Townsend "that was fantastic". I'll bet she was po'd that Beyonce sang her tribute song...
It looks like she said "You wrote that?"
I'm to old to pick a youtube fight. I started it first so fine. I'm done. LaVette has a beautiful voice and everyone at the Kennedy Center seems to be enjoying it. Everyone has their on taste in music. I also listen to alot of different music. Pop, rap, country, etc....
and you have bad taste! nothing wrong with that.....
