  • I've never used a battery powered rotary mower...until now!
    I know that sounds crazy but it's true. Today I test drive the Milwaukee M18 Fuel Self Propelled Dual Battery mower. This is brand new to the market for 2022 and I received a mower to test out and use in my yard. In this video I show you how it cuts in mulching mode, high lift mode, side discharge and bagging, and also how it mows through some thicker grass with ease.

      I would be kind of worried about using those though because they have active noise canceling. What it does is to counteract the noise it shoots out ambient noise and that might end up hurting or hearing.

    I just got the EGO Select Cut XP after my old Toro died. I've had such a good experience with my EGO trimmer that I figured I'd take the risk and try the mower. I did go ahead and get the beefed up top model, because it would have annoyed me to have something under powered. Honestly, I've been amazed with it. It is significantly more powerful than my Recycler was and the cut quality is noticeably better while mulching and I didn't even sharpen the new blades yet. The battery life seems to be great too. I have about 5500sf of lawn and I can mulch it all and have about 40% of the battery left at the end. We'll see how it lasts long term, but they do put a 5 year warranty on the mower and the battery, which is nice. I looked at the Milwaukee too, but from the research I did it doesn't seem like it outperforms the Select Cut XP (maybe does slightly worse even), it would've been a another battery platform to run, and most importantly, it's $300 more at $1099 compared to $799 for the EGO. Didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I'm happy with it so far!

    I love how Ryan always does these random things to his yard to share various outcomes with us. He planted different types of grass on one side of his house and today he cut a strip with a reel mower and then cut with the electric next to it. I know he is going to enjoy all of those various sections he put in his new property!

    One of the reasons I love the EGO mower I use is that it wasn’t just a regular lawn mower with an electric motor. They redesigned the mower from the ground up. It folds up more nicely. The height adjustment is easier, it has headlights, you can store it on its back, etc. I have the first generation and it is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

    I got mine about 3 weeks ago. I got the high lift blade as well. I didn't think that the blade was very sharp either but after looking into it, I found that new blades come powder coated and it takes a bit for it to wear off. Once the powder coating wore off, the blades work great. For those that say that $1,000 is too much, you need to keep in mind that the batteries are $250 each. The double rapid charger is $120. That's $620. The actual mower is really only $380. It's definitely worth that. If you count the taxes in the batteries and charger then the mower is even cheaper.

    Thanks for this latest video, Ryan. The timing was ironic in that I was seriously considering purchasing a new battery operated mower. As I did my research, I gave the battery operated mower(s) a fair evaluation. In the end, I purchased a new gasoline mower. The primary reason? One battery replacement was $200.00 and the mower required two. $400.00 in batteries when the mower actually cost about $400.00 - you may as well just buy a new mower and dispose of the old one. With that being said, I was impressed by how far along the battery operated mowers have come along. The manufacturers just need to work on the price point of the replacement batteries. Thanks for sharing.

    I've used two mowers with rechargeable batteries since 1995. The first lasted 17 years! Instead of replacing the battery, I bought a new one. I like not having to keep gas and oil, although I still need them for the snowblower. Sometimes I need to recharge the batteries before I'm finished, but I always need the rest.

    Bought an Einhell brand mower last year. My gas mower was having issues with oil leaks into the air filters and other problems so was time to replace it.
    I have about 3800 sqf of lawn to mow in a yard that has lots of planting beds, so am needing to maneuver around a lot and down pathways.
    Without being fully sure on battery mowers decided to go for an upper mid-range model. It has 17 inch deck, runs on two 18v batteries, and the 4amp versions will usually cover a single mow. Wet grass or mulching longer grass can sometimes use up the two batteries just before finishing.
    I love not having to deal with oil and gas, I like that it’s SOOO much better for the environment. Gas mower engines out pollute several cars driving 55 mph.
    I’m satisfied with the cut I get. I can use the batteries to power my angle grinder, hedge trimmer or sawzall; Einhell makes their batteries all interchangeable with all their battery power tools.
    4amp battery is their mid sized battery, and they cost around $50-60 per. They sell fewer and more amp batteries at different price points with shorter/longer run times.
    Mower cost around $400.

    What a great mower Milwaukee produced for their entry into the lawn mower world. I haven't heard many drawbacks and it really seems like they took a lot of features kn the market and added to this model. The battery segment is unique in the fact that you tend to stick within brands, so this is great as the M18 line is already a part of my arsenal of lawn care machines.

    Yep, agree with your Timemaster thoughts. I own an Echo 58V mower as well. The Timemaster is heavy, hard to maneuver, won't climb hills and has a ridiculously small gas tank for the engine size. I have to fill up 3x to get my yard done. Its one saving grace is just, like the name says, how much more quickly I get the yard mowed with it. With my Echo I'd use all 4 of my batteries and it takes forever...so I trim/outline with the Echo 58V now, then blast through the yard with the Timemaster.

    I purchased the Toro 60 Volt unit at the beginning of the 2021 mowing season. Big mistake. Cutting at 4 inches I had to cut the grass three times and I still had grass blades uncut all over the lawn. And the self propelled functionality really did not work well in 4 inch tall grass. Dealer had no idea what to do. Torro Rep said cut lower. I have Tall Fescue. I don't cut under 4 inches. The grass won't survive in the summer heat. Two months later I purchased a Hustler Dash 34 inch zero turn. One pass and the lawn is perfect. That was a good buy. I can't even sell the Toro. Nobody responds to my ads....no matter how low I made the price.

    I have over 15 Milwaukee battery powered tools, shop and lawn, so I really wanted the Milwaukee.

    The problem with Eletric mowers.. right… now, they do not have enough suction. While they cut grass nice add in leaves and “fall things” they fall apart. I’ve tried over 5 Eletric mowers in the fall time in Minnesota, they all lack the power of a combustion engine.

      @puvlea83 2 года назад

      5? How many leaves are you mulching? Most companies have a leaf blower that uses the same batteries. Or a rake would solve the issue. Not the mowers fault.

    • @JifferRiffic
      @JifferRiffic 2 года назад +1

      @@puvlea83 We just has a hail storm and clumps of leaves, I wouldn’t normally blow those because there are not many, just mow over them. However Eletric mowers can’t pick them up. Combustion engine suck them into the mower. Clearly you always blow leaves in the fall before the mow but you still may run into a clump or some leaves and it just blows them around with Eletric mowers.
      The real problem companies face is this. Battery life, suction, runtime. You could totally get crazy suction power from these Eletric mowers but only for a short time before the battery runs out. Combustion engines run all the time at the same rpm. Toros Eletric motor tried to solve run time by lack of suction= longer battery life and it created uneven cuts and almost no suction. But you could run long times, maybe for a second pass. Lol Dewalt has zero suction power, in fact dewalt lawn mower was the Top number one machines in returns last year 2021. You couldn’t give me a dewalt mower they are horrible. Honda is currently making a new Eletric mower that is suppose to solve these suction issues but until it’s proven it’s just all talk.

I’ve got about 2 acres to mow and would never even consider a battery mower.

    • @JifferRiffic
      @JifferRiffic 2 года назад

      We are at least 5 years out from better battery technology that can keep the mowers moving at a consistent RPM (creates suction) for longer periods of time. Until that time comes the best cut you would get is from a combustion engine in my opinion, keep in mind maybe if you lived on a small plot of land with really no yearly weather change or leaves you might get away with a ev mower today.

I thought I would never like my battery powered Weed Wacker and leaf blower and when I think about it, I haven't touched my gas-powered tools since.... but I'm still not sold on a battery powered walk-behind lawn mower and especially not a battery powered zero turn! Working in the automotive industry for too many years, I know that batteries have a life span and yes today's lithium batteries and brushless motors have come a long way, they still can only take so many chargers in their life span before its depleted. I work on Lexus hybrid vehicles on a daily basis, and I know around 150,000 miles a customer is going to be hit with a $6,000-$8,000 bill to replace the hybrid battery. I am sticking with gas. I get the push to move to electric but for me I know I can trust the tried and true tech and grew up working on and around gas mowers. I have non ethanol has stations right by my house and that prevents a lot of issues with the gassers. The batteries are also very expensive. Anyway, good to have options no doubt about that.

    • @andrewclary872
      @andrewclary872 2 года назад +1

      While the batteries are still ridiculously expensive, the tech has been improving dramatically over the last decade or so. I quit using gas mowers around 7 years ago because I got tired of having to winterize it, change the filters, plugs and oil, and store gas. Not to mention anything mechanically that can go wrong with a gas motor. The battery ones are super low maintenance and I can push an entire half acre lot with my singular 80v 8Ah battery that came with my Kobalt 21" mower, and the battery still shows at least 33% left. When it's done, I fold it up, tuck it away, and put the battery on charge next to my Dewalts. You say gas is tried and true, but I really just think you mean to say "it's been around longer". The maintenance on small engines alone is worth the switch.

I also struggle to get accurate oil readings based on the dipstick design. That said, I think comparing the Milwaukee to the Timemaster is fairly trivial as the likely user base, as you point out, is likely different based on lawn size alone.

    Nice review. I'm a fan of battery mowers. I use the Greenworks 60v and love it. I know you and others love those reel mowers because it gives you that look of a ball field cut but when you did the cut on the side for comparison I feel the reel mower cuts are so low that it takes out all that lush green of the grass. Just my opinion I like cutting a little higher. many of my neighbors will have a nice green lawn then they cut it so low and it goes from that nice dense green to a pale green.

      I think that way for a car but not for a lawn mower. I have Honda HRX217 and love the Milwaukee mower. So much easier to move around, you are able to feather the self propelled so it does not hop like Ryan said, no more oil/gas and so much less noise. Also moving my edger/trimmer to the Milwaukee quick-lok system as well. It just makes so much sense for me as I mow just under 50 times a year.

      Sounds right. My lawn is ornamental, KGB full sun longer cut out front and about an 1/2 inch shorter KGB under a maple in the back. I have used a TroyBilt 160cc push ~2014 MTD unit / Honda engine for about 9 years and have been spoiled with tremendous and consistent vacuum and cut quality. I bought an M18 on a Monday, main reasons 1" height of cut, and self propel for a front yard slope. I returned the M18 for a refund Saturday after the second use. This mirrors what I saw when I used it at 1-1/2" and 2". Very uneven cut quality on dry turf, - I bought the high lift blades thinking this might correct it. These were installed prior to second cut on the Saturday. The high lift blades did not correct it. When the cut is complete the M18 looks like someone rode a dirt bike over the turf (heavy wheel marks), there were many stragglers and it was very uneven pass to pass. When thick and healthy - the lawn should look like a just vacuumed carpet when you just finish cutting it. The M18 is 85lb and the TroyBilt is 64lb, and I found the M18 cut quality also suffered on slopes/grades, and the +33% weight of the M18 is far more difficult to move at the ends of a run. You might read / watch reviews that say this mower is light. Often those reviewers are used to a 144lb Toro TimeMaster or 240lb Toro GreensMaster reel mower. So in that context, yes - the M18 is light. Everything is relative - and I was able to clean up the cut quality by running over the front lawn with the TroyBilt, just before taking the M18 back.

    Here's my deal w/ battery powered (anything)... Sure, they want you to review it out of the box when the batteries are new. But 3-4 years down the road, how many times are you going to have to re-charge before you can cut your entire lawn? I own several battery powered lawn tools. But, depending on your lawn size, a mower will need to run a long time, and I don't want to "take a break" to recharge before I finish mowing.. or have to own 5-6 batteries. A gas-powered mower will run all day without complaining. AND the power doesn't decrease over time.

I've been using a EGO Select Cut mower myself and I have lots of trees in my backyard, and the one disadvantage of the EGO mower is that its blade is rather thin and soft (for battery life I suppose....). This results in a blade that is quite easily notched and dulled and I have to sharpen it 2 to 3 times a season. I'm curious if this Milwaukee has the same flaw. Thanks.

      Although not the Select Cut model, I too have an Ego mower, going into it's second full-year of use (bought August 2020) for a .38 acre lawn, and I have to agree the blades dull fast and leave blades uncut on the ends. So I tend to do a touch-up once a week to ensure clean cuts. They also chip easily--as the mulch dug out from squirrels into the lawn or fallen tree branches have proven multiple times.
      Hoping for a new blade from Ego or a replacement blade that will fit the mower, but higher quality.
