GarageGear, I already had looked at that model of Ariens Razor Lawn Mower. I looked at two others, too. There are literally hundreds of negative reviews for this mower - even from people who said, "I'm a loyal Ariens customer who always purchased Ariens products. But this new mower is terrible and I will never buy another Ariens product again." To give you an idea of how bad it is, there is a professional review on RUclips where the man explains the "Description" of these Ariens mowers have a "Side Discharge" feature. But, there is clearly no form of "Side Discharge" on the mower. This mower is said to have a low level of quality so that it loses power right in the middle of mowing, has wheels to fall off, and is difficult to pull the mower backwards. This is similar to the reviews of the 2024 model of Honda. So many people say, "Honda is a brand I was always loyal to. But this years model has severe problems with the belt and can even catch on fire while mowing. I will never buy another buy another Honda again." The website called Chickanic outright said, "Do NOT waste your time on mowers from YardMax, YardForce, Senix, and other foreign models with poor-quality engines." I agree. I bought a YardMax from Wal-Mart and it was TERRIBLE! It seems as though the mowers available today are simply awful and very low quality. If you know of a different model that can be bought "New" at a store that allows mowers to be returned after they were used in case there are problems, please let me know. I have also considered the fact that the 2024 models are simply poor quality. After an extensive search I ended up with a Ferris FW15 walk behind mower. I added the mulch kit and oil drain hose. None of the other homeowner or commercial mowers in the 21-32” cut range could handle my mowing conditions (hills and tight quarters). It replaced my Toro Super Recycler push mower-the self propelled version lacked enough traction for the hills. With its Honda engine I’m sure it will become part of my estate… In the mean time it has excellent cut quality, handles the hills, is reliable, and a pleasure to use.
I love my FW15! I've had it for 4 years and use it commercially. Excellent build quality, fantastic cut, great stripes and power galore. Thing is, its a commercial machine and priced accordingly so likely out of reach for alot of homeowners at $3800. Still, if you can swing it, its an excellent machine!
Bought an Ariens Razor 10 year ago and sold it last summer to help a local guy start up his lawn care business. I ended up going Honda since Ariens was no longer selling mowers in Canada at that time. I have had great results with my Honda but always wondered if the new Razors would have been a better choice. Your video has settled that debate I’m glad I went Honda. My 2 stage Ariens compact that I’ve had for 10 years isn’t going anywhere and still looks and runs like new. My Honda HS720 has done most of the work however
I bought the honda hrx217 last year. It handles everything I throw at it. Extremely uneven side lawn, exposed tree roots, tight corner areas. Still has my vote for one of the best mowers out there.

Glad to see a follow up. I just bought an Ariens snow blower and was quite tempted to replace my 17 years old craftsman mower with Ariens as well, but I guess I'll be sticking with the old craftsman for now, such a shame.
JB ,thanks I asked you months ago about Ariens mower since they make an awesome snowblower. I’ve had a Honda Hrx217hza for over twenty years it’s awesome. Since they went out of the lawnmower business (I have the luck that this is the year it dies without any chance of resuscitation). Toro is out of the question,as well as now Ariens . I hope you find one as good as Honda . Love your channel find our new best mower keep up the great job. Dan
I bought an Ariens snowblower and love it. After your first review of this mower I bought a Honda instead and love it. Thank you for the great honest reviews.
Upgrade to exmark or scag for solid build quality . They come in 21 and 30 inch models. Sure, your going to pay a premium, but your getting everything the Ariens lacks.
I have a 1977 year old 3.5 Briggs side discharge. It cuts at 2.75inches, the perfect height for my northern lawn. I have a couple of years old new Honda that cuts at 2.5 or 3 inches. Which I find too low or too high. Also has the Honda fight to back up going on. Pretty sad (I'm in that golden year age, by the way) that I'm still using that old Briggs and, enjoying it more than the Honda! I know how you feel. Cheers Bill
What I've come to understand is that these B&S 190cc run rich rather quickly. Another thing some people are doing is enlarging the jets on the carb. Clamming it makes a difference.
I have a few push mowers I will make a video of them at some point Im sure you want to see them running. The Airens is Brand New from 35-40 years ago with a 5hp Tecumseh, I believe it sat on a showroom floor or was in a box in a warehouse. Blade has original orage paint. I also have a brand new snapper from 30 years ago has never cut any grass whatsoever, I have the original documentation for it connected to the dipstick tube with the original ziptie. My Honda HRA214 has like like 1 hour on it also in nearly new condition but not showroom floor like my Airens or Snapper, its still a Beast with the Shaft drive to the rear wheels!!!
The grinding noise could be from the pawls in the recoil starter. I had that problem with a Briggs and determined that a bit more slack was needed in the pull cord so that the pawls wouldn’t expand as the cord moved going over bumpy terrain.
Had the same issue with my Honda. Every once in a while I heard that exact same rattle/grinding noise and it drove me nuts until I realized it was the recoil starter. Adjusted it a bit to give it some more slack and I haven't heard it since.
Wow. Great review of this mower. I was picking up some parts and saw this mower at the dealer and thought….Hmmm wonder if it’s worth it…. I’m going with your opinion on this one. Thanks again for sharing your video. ✌️
Bought the 190 CC Razor 3 weeks ago. Love it. Real Powerful. Replaced my old Honda where the rear wheel drive mounts had finally broken. I think your wrong on this one JB.
Mine shredded the front wheel gear system multiple times. It looks like it will be a continuing problem. I love how the engine runs and cuts but replacing wheels will be expensive one or twice a year. It's unfortunate as I love the snow blower line.
Wow! LOVE THAT MOWER! no...not the Razor...the GREEN one in the background at 4:40...but you already know that...as for the Razor... couldn't agree more ...looks like a lunch-bag letdown...Too much plastic around key parts (wheel height adjusters)...inferior copy of the Personal Pace (which is a love/hate thing anyway - just stick to the simple drive system bale like on the JD - you can easily one hand that!) The cut quality out of the box - ATROCIOUS! At the beginning of your video (after sharpening the blades) - honestly, looked good B+/A- (think a Super Recycler still does a better job mulching)...But credit where credit is due - probably better than a JD mulching (C+)...overall construction - looks average at best...good review JB! Cheers
Haha hey Kirk! Definitely a lunch bag let down! There are so many good things on those old JDs that everything else seems inferior. Thanks for watching bud!
Thank you for the video.. I'm looking for a new mower and was considering this model. However I might just wait a bit longer until they get their bugs out ..
Good video as I was considering one. I'm trying to find a Honda. I really want the entry-level HRX for the bag size and engine size, but I will consider an HRN as this is what I am replacing about 20 years old with a large yard and weekly workout. Most of these mowers I see look cheap, and with inflation, it's real a shame. Keep up the reviews!.
Thank you for all the reviews that you do. My toro AWD system went out on me. I replaced the belt, but did not work. Granted I got this thing used 4 years ago at a pawn shop for $100 I’m not complaining. I feel like living where I do now I have about 13,000sqft to mow give or take. This yard is really nice, but man does it bog that thing down even with the side opened on it. I believe it’s a 150cc, I’m scared to go electric especially with how thick this yard can be. Any advice would love to hear from you! Thanks for the content!
Hey JB I’m glad ariens reach out to you! It would be great if you could mention to them that a self propelled system like Hondas would definitely be great Personal pace /reflex I feel it’s not great for tight spaces Thank you!
I had bought a hrx a few weeks ago but had some issues and I had to return it to HD. I still have my old mower, I will just keep using it for this mowing season and if Ariens makes some upgrades I will definitely try them out ……You are absolutely right, Ariens could benefit since Honda is leaving as long as they make the right upgrades and we as customers will be able to have some great options I’m sure your input will definitely help!!
Good video! I just went to a local dealer and this is the only push mower they have. I want to support my local small business, but not sure I want to spend over 500$ for brand new issues. It’s worth noting that Briggs got bought out a couple years ago after filing for bankruptcy. My guy over at the local equipment dealer said he hadn’t noticed a change in quality. Hmmmm.
That rattle sound that you referenced sounded like the dogs inside the recoil trying to engage with the flywheel. Obviously that would wear them out quickly. Quite possibly something else that Ariens should recall. Love your videos. Highly informative and definitely a channel I would recommend to others. Keep up the good work!
@@GarageGear oh. Ok. I just bought mine the other day. Don’t know if it’s exactly same model and haven’t tried it yet. Just seen that it has check marks and x’s on what to use with bag, side, and mulch settings.
I have the same mower and had the same problem with the rpm’s dropping, my dealer could not figure out what the problem was. A sales rep from Briggs and Stratton went to his store and watched the videos I sent them of the mower acting up. The sales rep said it was the atmosphererical vent inside the carburetor. Last years was plastic and the new one is an aluminum button piece, it has fixed 98% of the problem but it still does it every now and then for about a half a second. Have you heard anything from ariens about the mower.
Thank you so much for saving me some frustration. Also, it can’t be all that bad - there’s an attractive suburban house wife using it in the advertisement at 9:50 😂
How do I check for these recalls?? I bought mine brand new from a large store. Also, the blades are ripping my grass apart. Has anyone found replacement blades or what should I do?
As an Ariens snowblower owner I thought maybe I made a mistake buying the Honda HRX217 last spring instead of saving a couple hundred bucks and getting one of these. Sounds like it was probably worth the extra money! That said, hopefully Ariens can work out these kinks for their future mowers.
Fantasizing about getting a battery ppwered mower, having a difficult time deciding if and what brand to get, etc, due to many variables. Not enough run time, sucion isn't sufficient for fall leaf clean ups, leaves grass clippings, no service centers. What say you good man? I'm still rocking the 2019 Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission, but going electric is alluring 😂 Then committing to a potential ecosystem also.
That’s a bummer but I had a hunch given the price. I really liked the old Ariens you mentioned, particularly the vacuum capability and the Kawasaki engine.
7:25 rattling sounds like the starter coil. I have the one size smaller engine and the gas cap doesnt stay on anymore. I need a new gas tank and cap. The rubber flapper on the back of the mower also came off and got chewed up in the blade. 2020 Toro Super Recycler
Just bought this mower, if I could I’d take it back I would immediately! It’s almost impossible to pull this mower in reverse, plus it leaves high and lows in the grass, have to mow twice to make it look good! If I was you I would look at something different!
Thanks for the follow-up video. Do you think i could try the cable adjustment on a super recycler? I've noticed my dads is difficult to pull in reverse.
I have this model 911609 of the Ariens (bought this year). I’ve only used it once. They claim you never change the oil?? That blew my mind and will not follow those guidelines. What everyone’s thoughts on this??
If I’m upgrading from a POS Poulan Pro (Husq off brand), is it still a huge upgrade from that? I don’t necessarily “need” an incredibly serious mower, just a good one to get the job done well.
Here’s my problem I’ve been researching mowers for weeks. I still can’t find the perfect mower. I really wanted the Toro super mulcher, but that handlebar system is a no go and I’m not convinced on Electric at all
Bought the Honda HRN…with the green dot on box. Took the extra warranty probably was a waste of money, but I don’t trust the big box stores. I appreciate your videos and your opinions now where is that 30 minute set up video at lol
All the brands now have low quality parts and bad gimmicky ideas that ruin mow for the user. Everything is disposable these days. I have mowers that are up to 30+ years old and run as strong as the day I purchased them. Unfortunately I think those days are gone. I also feel the quality of gas mowers is going down to push people away from gas to a different platform...🤔 I just replaced my drive delt on my SR4 super recycler and finally noticed the reverse issue. I'm thinking once the belt "breaks-in" it shouldn't be as bad. Never had the issue before until now. Great review as always JB! Keep up the great content!
Wow I expected much more from Ariens. I got to tell ya it’s not for me and I am staying with my mid 1990’s Toro Super Recycler. JB always enjoy your honesty.
I have the same issue with my Honda self propelled we’re the front wheels will stick when I go to pull it backwards. I stop and tilt back to lift the front end up and squeeze to self propelled handle to engage the wheels and release and I’m able to pull it backward as the wheels are no longer locked
Great review JB! As I unfortunately expected, Ariens completely dropped the ball here. After doing extensive research on this mower, I can say that consumer confidence on this mower for this price range is bad. From the Briggs engine issues, to the plastic crap that covers this mower. I mean, if MTD garbage can put a Kohler Command PRO on one of their flimsy crappy decks, where does that put Ariens? Unreal. I really hope Ariens is REALLY listening here and not just doing the proverbial "deal with it" attitude alot of OPE companies seem to be doing lately. I am personally sick of it. Ariens, do better. EDIT: Would like to point out that I contacted Ariens regarding this mower and all the issues over a week and a half ago through their "Rapid Care". I received literally no response in regards to this mower. Can't say I'm surprised. Good customer service over there, Ariens. I've moved on, bought a Toro instead.
Thanks. This Ariens Razor mower ($800, 50% plastic, and made in Mexico) with the RPM and strange vibration noise issues was annoying to listen to, and given the other issues; misaligned right side tires, buildup and blowout of grass during mulching, and fighting the drive to backup and maneuver... a majorly expensive turd to avoid!
I bought one too the fix for the surging I think was it was vapor locking,so I drill very small holes in fuel cap , two on the inside, mowed today and no surging , now the wheel lock up had to do multiple adjustments, not to happy with Ariens , maybe I should of got a nother brand but the mower does cut really really good 👍
@@GarageGear awesome videos and information 👍👍 when drilling the tiny holes for the cap on the inside go at a angle but not thru the outside of the cap 👍👍, also I increased the governor speed just a tick, by where the governor spring is attached to the bracket and bent the bracket a tiny tiny bit forward,
Great content, i have been using a toro for 15 years, and other than carburetor issue, the machine still works like first day i bought it…. This Ariens is a big no, i do have their snowblower.
Was so looking forward to this mower from Ariens. Love the snow blowers, but it seems someone in corporate chose to make the decision to outsource it, and does not meet Ariens's customer's expectations of features and quality. If Honda is out, All they had to do was copy them and be a win. Find a Honda before they are all gone people.
I bought this from Loews and after the 2nd mow the front wheel fell off! Tried finding the hardware in the grass but couldn’t. After looking at everything I had to remove to reinstall it to the front self-propelled system I figured returning it was the best solution! Now I own a Honda😂
You are spot on - it is sad the lack of quality Ariens is cranking out today. I have an Ariens LM 21 SW model 911184 with the Kawasaki engine on it that has to be going on 15 years old if it's a day, & it's still going strong. I just had it serviced - starts on the first pull! All steel design like you mentioned - this thing is a beast! I will be hanging on to it for as long as possible, as long as I can keep getting parts for it. I try to stick with OEM parts. Love your videos - no BS - you tell it like it is. Keep up the good work.
Toro has the better deck! This one has a slightly better drive system. Toros was unfixable from my end. Cut quality is good on this ariens. If you can still grab a Honda go for it
@@GarageGear thanks. I’m probably going to replace my 14 year old 190cc Toro. Looks like Honda is the winner. I think Toro quality has suffered. Is it worth it to go to the HRX for the additional 2 years of warranty and the 200cc vs 170cc or is that overkill for a 1/4 acre?
Hi I hope all is well. Thank you for the videos! I'm in the market for a new lawn mower. Could you share your recommendation on which one to buy based on your experience? Even after watching your other videos, I am still unsure which one to get…
That's a shame. I've been considering replacing my old riding mower with an Ariens Ikon zero turn mower. For as far out in the sticks as I am there is an Ariens dealer/garage also out in the middle of nowhere about a mile from my house. Guess I better watch some reviews on YT to see what folks think about them. My old rider is still going, but it has 351 hours on it and it's 14 years old now. I just replaced the carburetor on it instead of rebuilding it last week. Was only $30 for the new one, but it seems like every year its starting to nickel and dime me to death, lol.
The Ariens zero turns are good. They are built well here in the US. this one is made in Mexico. Idk what happened with it. If your rider still works I would keep using it until it costs too much to fix. Thanks for sharing.
This is the exact noise I had on a self-propelled Toro with a B&S 675 I believe... intermittent but annoying & no relief from it I tried at the time. It stopped after 2 seasons, so assuming the rope stretched or piece relaxed in recoil causing the beyond irritating noise.
@@GarageGear you know I have a Troy Bilt xp walk behind mower and the vibrations from the mower make the recoil make a grinding noise but I have not had time to fix that the mower is from 2011

Right on eric! 👍
Thank you for this review and for saving me from wasting my money on this mower.
You got it my friend! 👍
Cheers Bill
Very cool thanks for sharing this bill!
I will keep using my 10+ year old Honda mowers trouble free with routine maintenance. They will probably out live me.👍👍
They just might!
Great review, honest and straightforward.. can’t say I’m not surprised, most things these days are made sketchy, and cost more..
Absolutely my friend! What’s the plan for the weekend?
What I've come to understand is that these B&S 190cc run rich rather quickly. Another thing some people are doing is enlarging the jets on the carb. Clamming it makes a difference.
Good to know 4x4! Thanks for sharing my friend!
Awesome thanks for sharing my friend
The grinding noise could be from the pawls in the recoil starter. I had that problem with a Briggs and determined that a bit more slack was needed in the pull cord so that the pawls wouldn’t expand as the cord moved going over bumpy terrain.
Thanks for sharing this info
Had the same issue with my Honda. Every once in a while I heard that exact same rattle/grinding noise and it drove me nuts until I realized it was the recoil starter. Adjusted it a bit to give it some more slack and I haven't heard it since.
@@IAmDinkleberg good info here! Thanks for sharing
Wow. Great review of this mower. I was picking up some parts and saw this mower at the dealer and thought….Hmmm wonder if it’s worth it…. I’m going with your opinion on this one. Thanks again for sharing your video. ✌️
This ain’t a perfect mower right out of the box! Thanks for watching Steve!
The grinding noise sometimes can be associated with the braking lever, that the cable is stretched and the brake is sometimes partially on!
Thanks for sharing. I’ll look into it.
Bought the 190 CC Razor 3 weeks ago. Love it. Real Powerful. Replaced my old Honda where the rear wheel drive mounts had finally broken. I think your wrong on this one JB.
Thanks for sharing doug
Mine shredded the front wheel gear system multiple times. It looks like it will be a continuing problem. I love how the engine runs and cuts but replacing wheels will be expensive one or twice a year. It's unfortunate as I love the snow blower line.
The first line of this video says it all. Thank for watching Michael!
Looks like they need to dial in some of these engineering flaws. Great video JB!
Thanks bud. Appreciate it. Looks like you’re having fun with that new Kress mower! Enjoy it!
Will just keep appreciating my Honda for another 30 years.
My Honda blew up after 3 years just after warranty. A year later found out Honda lawn mowers have crankshaft problems.
@christopherblack4520 Bummer, man, sorry to hear that! I'm on year 4, so far, so good 👍.
Got that right! 👍
I'll stick with my Honda HRX 217HYA 200cc with hydrostatic transmission for the win 🏆 Purchased in May 2019.

That is helpful ECT! Thanks for watching my friend! 👍
Am I glad I found this video. Thanks bud! The problem now is which one to actually buy because it sounds like the Toro is out too

You got it my friend.
That sound you hear sounds like the recoil, and the rpm surge is because the governor spring is too weak or improperly adjusted.
Could be this! I’ll give it a look! Thank you
The noise almost sounds like the pull recoil. I heard that when I snagged the pulls start string on a bush before.
I was thinking that but the rope isn’t be rugged on anything. I’ll have to investigate
Thank you for the video.. I'm looking for a new mower and was considering this model. However I might just wait a bit longer until they get their bugs out ..
Smart move! 👍
You can still get that HRX. They are out there! May just have to expand your search window. Appreciate you Daniel!
Nice review!! Hopefully Ariens listens!!
Be nice if they did! Thanks for watching beano
Hey Chris I would grab a remaining Honda if you can. They hold up better with less trouble down the road! 👍
Appreciate the reviews. Almost bought one but ended up buying a Honda. Love it.
Can’t beat a Honda!
Hey JB I’m glad ariens reach out to you!
It would be great if you could mention to them that a self propelled system like Hondas would definitely be great
Personal pace /reflex I feel it’s not great for tight spaces
Thank you!
This is at the top of my list of things to talk about! Got plenty to run by them. Should be an interesting discussion
I had bought a hrx a few weeks ago but had some issues and I had to return it to HD. I still have my old mower, I will just keep using it for this mowing season and if Ariens makes some upgrades I will definitely try them out ……You are absolutely right, Ariens could benefit since Honda is leaving as long as they make the right upgrades and we as customers will be able to have some great options
I’m sure your input will definitely help!!
@@juan.rocha-gonzalez we’ll see what they have to say! 👍
Hmmmm.
Hey Justin! Totally get it my friend! I’m suspicious of your shop dealer too! Have you considered a remaining Honda?
That rattle sound that you referenced sounded like the dogs inside the recoil trying to engage with the flywheel. Obviously that would wear them out quickly. Quite possibly something else that Ariens should recall.
Love your videos. Highly informative and definitely a channel I would recommend to others.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks for being a cool fan of the channel, Tom! Appreciate your feedback. Yeah, I’ll add it to the list of the recalls lol
7:40 my manual said to put the mulch kit in when using side
@@estevannumber1 hey Estevan there is no side discharge on this unit. It rear discharges. If you put the mulch plug in it only mulches.

Also, the blades are ripping my grass apart. Has anyone found replacement blades or what should I do?
Hey Lucas! I would call a local dealer and give them your model number. They should be able to help you out. Have you tried sharpening the blades?
As an Ariens snowblower owner I thought maybe I made a mistake buying the Honda HRX217 last spring instead of saving a couple hundred bucks and getting one of these. Sounds like it was probably worth the extra money! That said, hopefully Ariens can work out these kinks for their future mowers.
Smart move with the Honda!
Keep going with the Honda my friend! You won’t be disappointed
Bought this mower last week and took it back today, it does not back up and the Briggs engine pulsates
Yep it’s got some real issues!

That’s a bummer but I had a hunch given the price. I really liked the old Ariens you mentioned, particularly the vacuum capability and the Kawasaki engine.
Those were unstoppable!
7:25 rattling sounds like the starter coil. I have the one size smaller engine and the gas cap doesnt stay on anymore. I need a new gas tank and cap. The rubber flapper on the back of the mower also came off and got chewed up in the blade. 2020 Toro Super Recycler
Thanks for sharing this my friend!
Just bought this mower, if I could I’d take it back I would immediately! It’s almost impossible to pull this mower in reverse, plus it leaves high and lows in the grass, have to mow twice to make it look good!

Def change the oil! Thanks for following alone.
If I’m upgrading from a POS Poulan Pro (Husq off brand), is it still a huge upgrade from that? I don’t necessarily “need” an incredibly serious mower, just a good one to get the job done well.

This is why I use honda engines in 90% of my equipment in my business. Haven't had any issue's.
That’s the way to do it
All the brands now have low quality parts and bad gimmicky ideas that ruin mow for the user.
Thanks for following along and for sharing your feedback. You’re absolutely correct!
Wow I expected much more from Ariens.
I got to tell ya it’s not for me and I am staying with my mid 1990’s Toro Super Recycler.

I have the same issue with my Honda self propelled we’re the front wheels will stick when I go to pull it backwards. I stop and tilt back to lift the front end up and squeeze to self propelled handle to engage the wheels and release and I’m able to pull it backward as the wheels are no longer locked
Good information here Rob! Appreciate you sharing this! 👍
Well said! I hope they listen and do better! Thanks for your feedback!
Absolutely!
should I set all 4 wheels to the same height setting (front and back) or should I stagger them so there is a slight pitch forward?
All four should be at the same height! 👍👍
Thanks for the honest review.

I bought one too the fix for the surging I think was it was vapor locking,so I drill very small holes in fuel cap , two on the inside, mowed today and no surging , now the wheel lock up had to do multiple adjustments, not to happy with Ariens , maybe I should of got a nother brand but the mower does cut really really good 👍
I will try this out! Thanks for sharing this Tim!

@@GarageGear we honestly have no idea😅 my step father bought it and everything was going so fast I don’t even know how much it cost
The weird noise sounds like the pull cord is putting pressure on the recoil.
That’s what I thought but it isn’t really moving. I’ll keep an eye on this.
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT!!! 👍✊️
This is the exact noise I had on a self-propelled Toro with a B&S 675 I believe... intermittent but annoying & no relief from it I tried at the time. It stopped after 2 seasons, so assuming the rope stretched or piece relaxed in recoil causing the beyond irritating noise.
