How a Good Vet Handles a Bad Cat

  • And not that Shorty is a bad cat per se, but she really is a problem cat at the vet's. With previous vets, she was always taken "to the back" to be handled by who knows how many people in who knows what kind of way. In her Queenly manner, she does not like anyone to touch her without express permission. In fact, this is the second visit in a week because the first visit the vet thought she seemed too stressed to perform the exam. So she first sent me home with Gabapentin, a safe anti-pain and seizure medication that is also given to help calm cats who experience anxiety at the vet.
Many of you know that last year I took Shorty to the vet for unexplained fur loss. I had posted a little comical compilation but I keep getting questions about it on videos from around that time when her fur looked terrible so I figured I would release the full video that I had previously released for Patreon and RUclips members. I hope this clears up the questions around it, and also highlights how a great veterinarian can handle a problem cat.
It's a long video, but I thought I would upload as much as I could to show you the whole proceedings. I love this vet! She wasn't stressed or scared at all, and remained good humoured throughout. That really helped us feel better too. I think she handled Sho perfectly.
But phew, I am glad that is over and that she has a clean bill of health! And check out Kokobean at the end. He seems concerned or perplexed doesn't he. Aw, my little kitties.
That's it everyone! Peace and purrs out!
    Rob

Whew, the amount of anger in that face is breathtaking. Joking aside, being a vet is one of those professions where being patient and compassionate is a requirement. We're not able to tell the animals that everything is okay and that we're trying to help them; all they know is that someone is doing something uncomfortable and unwanted, so it's understandable that they fight back. A great vet (as shown here) understands that, and isn't bothered by it. They keep it relaxed and lighthearted the whole time, as they should.

My torty is a problem child at the vet and has had to be carried out in the kevlar glove before. I eventually learned that a true hallmark of a good vet is they listened to me about what was best for her, and that was staying with me. I can stick a finger in her mouth while she's spitting and snarling and have no issue and she'll loudly express her distaste, but still behave perfectly if I am there and holding her. My current vet does everything possible with me in the room including blood draws and even pre surgery prep because they recognize that's what she needs.

Visiting the vet when she was a kitten/juvenile was a drama free adventure with easy ear and teeth inspections, she even let the vet hold a stethoscope to her belly! Not any more, now it is refusal to leave the carry case, hissing, swatting, scratching and screaming - then sedation $$$$.

Worked great, chilled her out, and just made her a bit sleepy, but not overly lethargic or uncoordinated at all. No bad side effects and she slept it off in a few hours after the visit. I highly recommend it if your vet agrees. They originally prescribed one to be given the night before and then one right before the visit, but we elected to do the one just right before the visit in case there were any bad reactions. There were not and we were super happy we were able to take her for her exam without drama, fighting and attacking.

We found giving the gabapentin ( buphorphanol did nada) a full 2 hours prior to exam was the best sedation. Prior to that she’d fight through it. My vets use a block out mask for blood draws-that apparently calms them because they can’t see- of course, that is after the lovely toofy(large hisses) and eye exam😅. For our cat- may not work for the queen- they add a rocking (shakin’kitty syndrome 😮) that calms her…

Poor Shorty. The gabapentin really helps my anxious boy Jack. He does take one dose the night before and a second dose day of the appointment. I'm glad she's ok though 🙏❤️😽

Good girl, Shorty. Two of my three cats are terrors. On a scale of 1 -10, the boy is about a 6-7, the girl is about a 12 😅😅. I call her the shredder.

It sure is scary for both parent and fur baby, I mean Queen, when they need medical attention. As I care for many cats, several days before the vet visit put Shorty or Kodi's fav snacks, toys, blankets, catnip inside the carrier and leave it in the open for them to go in on their own accord. Once they do not associate the carrier with a bad trip to the vet, they are far more relaxed to and from the vet. I also always cover the carrier with a towel or blanket , it calms them more. Be sure to take your Queen and jester to the vet every 3 months for a check up, and at her age every 6 months for blood work. Brush that Queen's coat often lol, maybe keep her sheddings for a small coat. Best wishes for you and your babies.

She looks so much like my Midnight, it's honestly scary. I get to take her to the vet every once in a while for Feline Herpes that gives her some issues with eating, but she's such a great cat. Glad to see yours is going strong, too. Stay feisty, shorty! 🤟

"And this is on gabapentin." Poor kitty.
My cat, at the vet all he does is sit there quietly and cringe. He's literally never hissed, growled or swatted at the vet in nearly 12 years, and for much of that time he was even going in a couple times a year to get abscesses cleaned.
I can't even imagine what getting a cat claw under the nail would feel like. Poor vet.

I have always been the one holding my cats for the vet. They are used to me and so they don't bite me even if they're angry. I don't think I could hold that angry little dragon though
