It isn’t just you! I just upgraded my original v trails with these, can’t run further than 6 miles without them ripping my toes and side of the foot apart with blisters. Wish I found your video before I got them.
Sorry about that Nom, it was a very strange upgrade from Vibram. I think it's a great trail hiking shoe, but it should not be listed under the running category on the Vibram website. Or perhaps they should sell it with toe socks included. Hope you can return yours, I tried to persevere with them, but the blisters just got worse. Wish you happy running.
I completed 'the world's toughest multiday hike' using V alpha and V trail 2.0 with conventional boots only for deep snow. (I am a very experienced barefoot runner and hiker). Very difficult terrain every day for 3 weeks. I got no problems with rubbing or blisters etc but I have very tough skin! No socks. The V alpha was more comfortable due to lightness and flexibility. Both models have great grip but the V trail 2.0 was better on slippery wet rocks and the extra toe protection was reassuring. I do not understand your comment about ankle support. No VFFs have that. They both let the water in and were slow to dry. All the pack animal manure did not help but by the end of the trip the stink was too bad. Both pairs had to go in the bin. Nether showed any wear after very hard hiking use and I had no injuries either.
Thanks for the honest review. If you could please answer me a question with your expertise: if I wear toe socks, will these be a better choice and will they likely last much longer than either the KSO or Evo? They're the only 3 I would buy and the only pair I've owned before were the treksports. I loved them...except for them only lasting a few months before the toes split. I only use one pair of shoes for all purposes including on and off trail running until I need to get another pair. Which of the 3 do you recommend the most?
First off, thanks for a solid honest review & follow up from someone who genuinely runs in VFFs. I've just worn through my beloved Bikilas, which I've been using largely for trail running. I was always planning on swapping to to v-trails once the bikilas were knackered. But obviously your comments have put me off the trail 2.0. I've not been able to find the original v-trails anywhere in my size, so my question is: Do you have any experience trail running with the v-trek or v-alpha?? Would either of those be more suitable for trail running than getting another pair of the bikilas(v-runs), as I think a bit more sole would be preferable.. Any input welcome, thanks again!
Thank you for the comment, V-Trek looks good, certainly would be good for colder climates and muddy trails with higher ankle coverage, but not good for where we are, very dry and hot conditions. V-Alpha I wouldn't consider because it has the same hard rubber around the toes as V-Trail 2.0., not good without toe socks or say hello to new blisters.

Thanks for saving us from making an expensive mistake! Do these shoes have any good aspects to them? Are they more robust and sturdy? More protective of the foot? Did the ankle have more support?
Great question; I feel they offer a more cocoon fit around the foot, also more warmth and water resistance with the new thicker upper canvas type feeling material. The soul are as the original, amazing grip, great comfort and shock absorbing properties on trails, there is also a tighter more sealed fit around the ankle which may help keep out dirt and water from entering the shoe. For anyone wearing toe socks, it's a great barefoot running shoe.
Fully agree.. I've also used the previous models like the original Vtrail and spyridon MR without blisters/chafing and when I got the V 2.0 I blistered up not only on the toes, but under the foot on the inside. It took me probably 30 painful k:s to get my feet to accept the V2.0, but now I'm into my second pair (the first ones I wore the soles out) and once used to the model, it was not an issue to start using a new pair. Yes, it sucks, totally agree, but they're also by far the most durable fivefingers by date.
I totally agree with your video. I’ve been running off road with Vibram Five Fingers for some 10 odd years. I never wear socks and just pop them in the wash after every use. I started with the Spyridon LS (their original trail running shoe) which got replaced by the V-Trail. Both were simply the most perfect off road running shoes. Never ever had a single blister or sore. The V-Trail 2.0’s, far from perfect for all the reasons in this video. Vibram Five Fingers need to bring back the original V-Trail shoe.
I have just started with these. I have completed about 4 runs (little under 40kms) so far. I found it bit difficult towards the end of first run and entire second run, but the comfort level started to grew post that and after 4-5 runs, I feel more comfortable than first run, looks like its just the breaking in. All toes feel better/comfortable than before and hoping to see this grip/comfort in future as well. I did not have to use toe socks any aids during break-in period. One thing that I still feel a challenge is leading my pinky to its compartment, that toe always require some help it seems, guess thats because of the very little gap I have between those toes.
Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm sure this will be helpful to everyone. It's great that you are doing so well with them, and without socks. The small toe often comes out on one foot with me too, many people have one half size difference in feet which can make it quite a challenge to choose the perfect size in Fivefingers. Glad these have worked out for you, it's a great shoe, I just wish they produce a 3.0 using a softer rubber around the toes.
@@9898514868 yes, I've completed about 1050 kms so far on it, not running very regularly though. I've added Luna Sandals as well, but mostly run with Vibram V-Trail.
I just got a pair, even got socks to wear while "breaking them in". No dice! That big seam in between the toes is even more painful with socks! What are they thinking? 🤷♂️ They might work for people with splayed toes with big gaps between them, but that's not me! So frustrating. First the soles of my KMD Sport LS literally came off. To replace them I ordered V-Alphas in the same size I've always gotten, only to find out the hard way that they run much smaller now, making them unwearable! I then ordered these V-Trail 2.0's in the next size up, they fit, but are gouging at the sensitive gap between my middle toes and causing real pain. That's a hard no for me! It's really too bad too, because they seem so nice in every other way. Not a single store where I live carries them any more so I keep having to order them and wait for shipping. I keep trying. What in the world are they doing over there??!! 🤷♂️😤 This is ridiculous.
Did a 10km run this morning and developed a blister on the tip of my toe, which is painful. And that was with Injinji socks! The Spyridons were perfect. Very disappointed with the V-Trail 2. I waited 2 months for these to arrive from overseas, so it's not going to be worth it exchanging then.
I discovered the same thing. The shoe is such a great idea, but when I tried them on in the store, it felt incredibly scratchy on my toes, so I didn’t buy them. I was so sad, because I really wanted to buy a pair.
Thanks for commenting Ellen, only a matter of time before 3.0 comes out. Hopefully they use a softer rubber this time around the toes. Do check ebay and see if you can find V-Trail 1.0, or sometime old stock can be found on Amazon, V-Trail 1.0 is the perfect shoe.
I am looking at these as they are currently on sale on the vibram site. I’ve never worn five fingers before, would you still not recommend, specifically for a newbie? I am looking at mostly hiking and occasional use in or around water.
It's a high quality perfect shoe for hiking and getting wet. If you can get it on sale, grab it. My only dislike is the hard rubber around the toes, just no use for long distance barefoot running in high heat and humidity. I think they will discontinue this version soon and improve on the next version for pure trail running. Let us know how you get on with them. Happy hiking.
Well crap. Guess I'm glad that I'm a cheap bastard and bought a pair of Merrel Trail glove 5's as my first pair of minimalist shoes. Any opinion about those btw?
Thanks for commenting. Trail glove looks good, no personal experience with them. Don't be put off by this review, one day you really do need to try Fivefinger shoes.
Hi. I've had the trail gloves and ended up just wearing them around as normal shoes. To me they felt much more like conventional shoe - not for the padding or the drop, both of which felt right for natural running - but for the weight and stiffness. I know that half the point of the trail versions of these shoes is to protect you from the trail roughness, but i felt that they'd gone a bit too far with the stiffness/protection and had lost too much of the flex/feeling. YMMV. hope this helps. P
It's 2020, there are no more V-Trail 1.0's. I need new Vibrams... what should I do? The V-trail is the all-round running, hiking, shoe I'm looking for but I'm worried about numerous complaints about the issues outlined in your video.
@@CoolRunningReviews I have looked at the v-trek and I would be concerned that since it is more if a high top shoe, it may not be very good for running since there's too much ankle "support."
I found another pair if anyone is looking for the original v trails: rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5575378759&campid=5338273189&customid=&icep_item=124442878001&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg&toolid=11111
I feel your pain. Last summer I found what may have been the worlds last brand new pair of size 41 V-Trails on eBay after I was so disappointed with the V-Trail 2.0’s.. (for £40 too as they were an unwanted birthday present.. double win!).. but I’m not sure what to do once these wear out. I’ve been trail running with both the Spyridons and the V-Trails for the past 10 odd years and I won’t run with anything else. Love them! I’ve actually just forwarded this video to someone I’ve got to know over at Barefoot Junkie to see if they can communicate this with HQ and bring back the original V-Trails.. by all means if enough people write to Vibram we might get them back 🤞🏻
Yeah...I'm walking 500km with them now and I have blisters at the same part of my feet...this is my first pair of fivefingers and I hope to buy better one!
Sorry to hear this, I think it's one bad product in a lineup of many great shoes, I think V-Trek is a much better option as it uses the same design around the toes as the original V-Trail. Good luck, hope you find something that works for you.
I’ve always liked the idea of five fingers shoes, however I’ve never even dared to buy a pair, because my feet are of significantly different in size! After watching this review, I feel consoled. A great video though! thanks for the review!
Vibram Fivefingers can be a life changing experience for many runners. But getting the right size is crucial, often people will need to buy two pairs to get the perfect fit if one foot size is much different. Appreciate your comments!
Are the sizes the same on the original vs the 2.0? Tried the 2.0 but I agree that the rubber felt rough. But I got the size right and the only 1.0 version I can find is online so I am just wondering if I should go for the same size?
I feel the 2.0 V-Trail is a bit tighter than 1.0 V-Trail due to the harder rubber used in the toes. So going with the same size in 1.0 will still be right but you will notice them looser after a few months of wear when the softer material around the toes stretches.
A mí no me han hecho daño, no sé si es porque mi piel es tan dura como la de un rinoceronte, o simplemente que no me molestan, ni con calcetines ni sin ellos.
Thank you so much for this great video! The problem right now is that the original model of v-trail is out of stock, at least the normal sizes. So I have this dilemma: which fivefingers to buy for trail running? The V-alpha seems to have the same plastic material in the toes... and the v-run is too thin for more extreme trails... What you would recommend? Really wanna order a new pair soon but unfortunately it became a difficult task to go on vibram website and simply order the best shoe for trail running! Thanks so much, great channel!
Hi Pedro, I'd avoid V-Alpha which is basically another crappy version of V-Trail, better to go with V-Trek as it has a similar toe design to original V-Trail. Good luck and happy trail running!
I wish i had seen this review earlier. After buying and loving the v-run, but running many of the time in forrest trails i made the purchase but found that they rub around the edge of the fabric causing cuts and blisters. I've also tried socks but they felt so tight with them on (and i was wearing a size bigger than my standard v-run). Save yourself the time and get some vivobarefoot primus trails if you can afford it as you can't get the 1.0 anymore.
Would you be able to give some advice on how to pick the right size as I never owned 5 finger pair before? going by the measures on Vibram's website my size is 44. So ordered my first pair on Amazon and got them delivered today. I normally buy trainers with some gap for my toes but this one fits so there is no gap in the big toe pocket at all. Is this how they should be? I feel if I go for a larger size my small toe would slide out from its pocket,
Your big toe needs to feel like it has a tiny extra space, if it's stretching the fabric in front of the big toe then you need a half size up. Many people like myself have one foot half size bigger than other, you did need to order the right size for the bigger foot. Of course this means the smaller foot has to get use to a shoe that's too big. But I manage just fine like this, if I try I can make the small toe come out of it's box, but you just get use to it. Not a problem really.
@@MarekKozakowski good luck, it's worth going through the pain of sending a couple of pairs back until you know your size. Once you got it right, you can order future pairs online with confidence.
@@CoolRunningReviews hey just wanted to say thank you for your advice in selecting the right size, i have vow done a couple of runs in my new v-trail 2.0 and i absolutely love then even without socks. 🙃
@@kiramiftari9486 It not so much that V-Trail are thicker, there's just a lot more coverage and protection on the V-Trail sole compared to V-Run. There's little to no arch protection on V-Run, on V-Trail the arch is fully protected against sharpe stones.
How disappointing. I still run in v trails but mine failed on the inside of the big toe within a few months. I was hoping the changes they made for 2.0 would toughen this part up but sounds like it they messed it up.
Original V-TRAIL is the all-round better running experience. The hard rubber used in the toe areas on the 2.0 is hard like plastic, nasty and causes blisters. I just feel it's really a hiking shoe rather than a running shoe, it shouldn't be listed in the running section on Vibram website.
Hi. Thanks for your comprehensive review. I enjoyed hearing your views. I used an earlier vff trail shoe (can't remember the name but was before the "V-" designation came into being). I really liked it but found that as soon as i went onto any sort of gravel/sand/wet mud, debris would get between the toes and very quickly, holes appeared. This happened on two consecutive pairs of the shoes I bought. I'm using the V-Trail 2.0's now and feel that the shiny material between toes 1, 2, 3 is a great idea. I'm not feeling any of the roughness you report, and am instead finding that the slickness of that shiny plastic means better protection for the vulnerable shoe material between the toes. No holes have yet formed, despite > 300km of varied (wet and dry) terrain. I should also say that I wear a 48 in vff's. I can get into a 47 but it's just a TOUCH too tight - which means I'm probably at the bottom end of the foot size that 48's are meant for. My experience may be better because my pair of V-Trails is a bit looser? Best. P
@Paul Button Very interesting, just shows how there is no one perfect running shoe, I think the 2.0's were a step backwards on the original V-Trail, yet they are working perfectly for you. Sure there must be many more you also enjoyed them. Happy running Paul!
@@CoolRunningReviews I took a 10 mile hike round trip when I first got them, and no hot spots reported really. They’re actually my first pair too. I’ve had them for a little over a month and do a 1-2 mile run every other day since purchasing them. I’m a bit new to the five finger shoe honestly but they seem to be working just fine with me, but I’ve been wearing socks
Do they dry quickly when hiking in them? I've got vivobarefoot tracker 2 for hiking. They're pretty waterproof, but I had to go through a few waterfalls in a recent hike, and they hold all the water, so I'm thinking for very wet hikes quick drying beats waterproof.
I'm considering V trails shoe and not sure the original v trails or 2.0 is better so this VDO is the answer! Thanks so much BTW the original one is now on sale! :)
V-Trail 2.0 are a little tighter than V-Run, there is much more flexibility in the softer material of V-Run. But generally I think once you know your correct size with FiveFingers, you go with the same size in V-Trail 2.0 and V-Run. Only if I was wearing socks with V-Trail 2.0 I would go with a half size bigger.
i bought kso evo because it is cheaper and it is my first vff so it won't hurt my pocket as much if it doesn't work for me. i am already a midfoot striker and used to low drop shoes so transition is not that hard. i wear them on slow runs and feel comfortable so i thought i'd introduce some faster running wearing them but on faster paces i feel like my feet slide back and forth just a little bit inside the shoes. i asked vibram customer service and i was told that v trail 2.0 runs a little bit bigger than kso evo and to order half size smaller. do you agree with that? * i am not from the us so returning an item i buy online from the us is not practical at all
@@gudboyngdisyerto I only focus on the specific running shoes from Vibram, so I can't compare with KSO Evo which was not designed for long distance running. It's tough getting the size right in the beginning, that's why I recommend only buying from Amazon, as you might have to send back until you find your perfect size. Good luck, I hope it works out.
Thanks for doing this video. I find there lots of space in the toe box in my little toe, but fine with my big toe. Is this normal. I'm normally a size 11.5. I ordered the 11.5-12. A few people have said go a size up.
@@CoolRunningReviews i don't think its a problem, more a query. My left foot is slightly bigger and my big toe fits snugly, there's a bit more room on my right. Its my other toes where there's loads of room. It my first pair of VFF. I did a half mile run today and loved it. I can see the potential. 😀
@@grahammckinney5705 There's always a very fine balance on getting the perfect FiveFingers size, if your big toes fit snug then there is no way to go with a smaller size. Most likely the more you run in them you'll soon forget about the extra space around the small toes. Also in the summer it will feel different, this little extra space will not feel so big on summer runs. Are you running with socks or barefeet?
@@CoolRunningReviews after going for a few walks and a light jog I'm finding them more and more comfortable. My first pair and first time going minimalist. I'm using them with and without socks, mainly because it's below freezing here at the moment 🤣 I'm definitely sold them. 👍
Glad they are working for you, my first run in the was also ok, it was the second and third run of longer distances that the rough hard runner in the toes started running raw my skin. I run everyday and no way I could continue with these. I think it's a good shoe, but not for me as I want endless miles with no socks, especially where we are here it's very hot and humid weather for much of the year. Happy running!
Agreed, there was a weakness in the toe construction on the original, but the softness also made them beautifully comfortable. 2.0. is a much stronger and robust shoe, but I don't think it's an everyday running shoe with no socks as the hard rubber in the toes is too rough on bare skin. It's simply too hot where I am to run with socks. Glad they are working for you, still love VFF and still think everyone should have a pair for pure running bliss. Happy running!
That’s a shame. I have the original vtrails and find them great. But my feet fatigue on any run longer than 25 miles. Real pain in the ball of my foot. When I stop running it’s fine and goes away. A pain for my last 100km race. Great video thank you.
Thanks Mark, impressive that you can even run 25 miles in them! Always find it amazing when I see ultra runners complete races in these, one guy completed our 217 km Cyprus Ultra Marathon did the whole race in Vibram's.
@@CoolRunningReviews well, I mean they all have their intended uses, and I primarily use three different versions of the vibrams depending on what I’m doing. The v-aquas I use with no socks when I’m river fishing or on the boat so I can go in and out of the water without getting soggy socks as they are intended to be used. I use the v-treks when I’m hiking and hunting (with socks), and I use the v-train 2.0’s when I’m working out with or without socks.

Thanks so much for the reply. I’m torn between the V trail 2.0 based on your review and others and the v train. Both on sale.
@@jefferyfarmer8454 V-Train if you prefer no socks, V-Trail if you wear socks and want a lighter, faster shoe.
Have a look at V-Trek, very similar to V-Trail 1.0
Love them!
I’ve actually just forwarded this video to someone I’ve got to know over at Barefoot Junkie to see if they can communicate this with HQ and bring back the original V-Trails.. by all means if enough people write to Vibram we might get them back 🤞🏻
Can't they also make them without the individual toe slots?
Im thinking of buying a pair of Vibram but I have a bunion so worry that that might cause a problem with it?
The material is so soft and stretchy, I don't think it will be an issue with something like V-Run.
Can you use this shoes for a temporary moment like a Zumba class or something like that? Will they cure flat feet?
Do you know when and if the next model is coming out or bring back the 1.0?
I expect V-Trail 3.0 will be later this year. Hope they improve the rubber around the toes.
Appreciate your comments!
hi can you give a review for vibram V-Trek? what's the different to V-Trail, and which is more comfortable to wear on outdoor activity, thank you! :)
Design is similar to v-trail, so could be a good option. Will review soon. Thanks for your feedback.
@@CoolRunningReviews will be waiting for it, thank you sir!
Do you know if there are a five fingers Who are made to run/walking in the rocks, jumping, etc and are strong and resistant?
I think FiveFingers V-Trek is perfect for that.
I bought these for hiking and backpacking will these work good around a lake setting?
I think they will be excellent for this.
newer Spyridon EVO seems to use the same sole, but without the upper reinforcement.
@@CoolRunningReviews ok, great ! Thank you so much for the help!🙏
@@PedroGomespiano happy trail running!
V-alpha is best shoe from vibram can use anywhere
I wish i had seen this review earlier. After buying and loving the v-run, but running many of the time in forrest trails i made the purchase but found that they rub around the edge of the fabric causing cuts and blisters. I've also tried socks but they felt so tight with them on (and i was wearing a size bigger than my standard v-run). Save yourself the time and get some vivobarefoot primus trails if you can afford it as you can't get the 1.0 anymore.
how are the v-Trains?
A great all-round shoe, not my choice for rocky trails though.
@@CoolRunningReviews Thank you so much, this is very helpful!!!
@@MarekKozakowski So glad it worked out for you! Happy running.
Bought these; love ‘em. My second pair of Vibrams ever.
Excellent, glad they worked out for you. I'm loving my V-Run at the moment.
@@CoolRunningReviews Do you think V-run have as thick of a sole as the Trail?
Best. P
Glad they worked out for you, are you wearing toe socks with them?
@Paul Button Very interesting, just shows how there is no one perfect running shoe, I think the 2.0's were a step backwards on the original V-Trail, yet they are working perfectly for you. Sure there must be many more you also enjoyed them. Happy running Paul!
@Paul Button would be interesting to hear if you maintain no socks-no blisters in the winter. Please let me know. Best wishes, run strong 💪🏃♂️
I have a pair and yes, I wear them with socks. I live in a colder climate so they work for me just fine and don’t mind wearing socks
That's great to hear. Can I ask what's your longest distance in them so far with no hot spots around the toes?
@@CoolRunningReviews I took a 10 mile hike round trip when I first got them, and no hot spots reported really. They’re actually my first pair too. I’ve had them for a little over a month and do a 1-2 mile run every other day since purchasing them. I’m a bit new to the five finger shoe honestly but they seem to be working just fine with me, but I’ve been wearing socks
My opinion they work great for me(2.0) I don't wear socks, though I only backpack and hike with them. Running is completely different. Great review
Thanks for feedback Alien Clawson, glad to hear they worked out well for you. Happy hiking to you.
Thanks Nutwithu, The original V-Trail is a perfect barefoot running shoe, only sale now just makes it even more perfect.
how is the sizing of v trail 2.0 compared to v run?
Is the problem with both feet or just one?
I'm using them with and without socks, mainly because it's below freezing here at the moment 🤣
I'm definitely sold them. 👍
First run ever in V5F trail, without socks. No blisters, full comfort.
Very interesting review.
Thanks!
I found the original v trail wore out due to friction between the toes after 9months
The new 2.0 i find have been more durable, but i do run in socks
BEST RUNNING GEAR REVIEWS that is impressive. Such a long way in them. That’s inspired me to keep going. Thank you.
Same here always the ball of the foot

did they stop making vtrail? i cant find them anywhere on my size 11
V-trail 1.0 is no longer being produced. Very hard to find.
Go with v-alpha best shoe from vibram
@@llcoolpwilly agreed
@@CoolRunningReviews why is v alpha the best?
I always wear socks with them unless I’m wearing the water shoe.
Interesting, do you run in the V-AQUA? What do you use them for?
@@CoolRunningReviews well, I mean they all have their intended uses, and I primarily use three different versions of the vibrams depending on what I’m doing. The v-aquas I use with no socks when I’m river fishing or on the boat so I can go in and out of the water without getting soggy socks as they are intended to be used. I use the v-treks when I’m hiking and hunting (with socks), and I use the v-train 2.0’s when I’m working out with or without socks.

Thanks, not so much a review but a warning for anyone thinking of upgrading from original v-trail to v-trail 2.0. The new design is just plain crazy, and not worth the money.
You'll also need to order a half size up to accommodate for toe socks, which then means they are too big for when you want to run without socks.
