The great thing about third party tools like those is that their authors have put together fantastic guide videos already. There's really nothing for me to explain that hasn't been by them.
The VR Converter or VR Plane to Sphere doesn't seem to help me with my footage. The client supplied a 1x1aspect ratio 180cam video so "equirectangular" etc gives wonky results. Any suggestions?

I've never tried, but I don't see why not? It's the same as any other comp, just different dimensions.
