    [GALAXY FLIP 5 / GALAXY FOLD 5 HANDS-ON]
For nearly a year, I’ve dual-wielded Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 4 and Flip 4 as a daily-driver one-two punch for workday productivity and weekend portable playtime. Same as the Fold 3 and Flip 3 before that; and the second and first generations before.
But this year, for the first time in American foldable history, Samsung faces competition in both categories. On the clamshell front, Motorola’s Razr+ is a real affront thanks to its larger … front. At the same time, the Galaxy Fold’s large-format dominance is threatened by the Google Pixel Fold and the upcoming OnePlus foldable.
Well Samsung invited me to an early hands-on at its pop-up experience center in Herald Square to see the heat it’s bringing to compete: the meaningfully different Galaxy Flip 5 … and the exceedingly familiar Galaxy Fold 5.

@MrMobile, I'm so glad I watched this BEFORE preordering the Fold 5! You just saved me making a HUGE mistake. After 9 months of owning a Fold 4, Samsung was unable to repair it (after 3 times I asked for my money back), and after 3 weeks, low and behold they sent me $1,799.99. I'm shocked they did, but also very happy to be done with them.
Let's hope the next foldable contender gives us something we deserve.

@@22b_gc8 The 2 issues I had were: the inner screen protector was peeling off, and the outer screen was scratched to hell. Keep in mind that I bought Samsung care from day 1. I called Care (assuming I'd have to pay a deductible due to scratching the front screen), but they told me that due to the inner screen issue, they'd repair the whole thing for free.
Shipped it to them the first time. They sent it back the same day they received it "repaired". Nope. They replaced the screen protector, but damaged the inner screen by either dropping a screwdriver on it, or something with a tip as there was a dimple on it that wasn't there before me sending it in. They also replaced the entire phone housing, and camera lenses, but did not fix the outer screen.
The 2nd time I shipped it, they again sent it back the same day they received it, but this time they only replaced some internal antenna. They did not fix either the outer or inner screens.
The 3rd time I called several times to ask if it would actually get fixed this time, or if they could just send me a new phone. A week after they received it, they told me it was now out of warranty due to the scratches on the screen.
I tweeted out to Samsung Mobile USA, and LTT, and a day later, called in, spoke to a manager, and all of a sudden I was offered a full refund. It was promised within 3-5 business days, but actually took 3 weeks, but they did indeed send me my money via Citi Bank.
I can't wait for Samsung to have a proper competitor here in the States. Google lame 1st attempt is a joke, though at least it's an attempt. Maybe by the 3rd or 4th iteration, it might be worth buying. But until then, I'll stay on my Moto or iPhone, or maybe even a Note 13, eh hmh. I mean S23 Ultra. Samsung knows how to make phones, but not folding ones that hold up... Yet.

@@byersbw I can see how that must have been super frustrating and Samsung customer service leaves a lot to be desired, but it sounds like the only issue that the phone had originally was that the screen protector was peeling? Everything after that happened due to Samsung repair center screwing up. So it doesn't seem fair to say that "Samsung knows how to make phones, but not folding ones that hold up" based on that. For what it's worth, I've had my Fold 3 for almost 2 years and I also only had an issue with the inner screen protector peeling off. Fortunately, I have a Samsung repair center in my city where I can just bring in the phone and have the inner screen protector replaced within 1 hour. So it's not major issue for me to have it replaced 1-2 times a year. Besides that, the phone is working perfectly with no issues.

I've been looking forward to this particular initial review for a while.. it was your review of the Galaxy Fold 3 that prompted me to give foldables a try. And, for the most part, the benefits of using a foldable, along with the screen issues, were borne out. I DID end up replacing the inner screen. For free (always get Samsung's extra coverage). Since I am not a frequent picture-taker, the deficiencies of the camera impacted me less.
Given that l don't use the unit for business as you do, I expect to be better served by a flip phone. So I am l looking forward to a full review of the Flip 5. Your reviews are a bit more accessible. Your friend from the Unlockr is knowledgeable, and gives excellent detail in his reviews (I subscribe to him as well). But yours can be more understandable to the common schmuck! Fortunately, I work in the telecommunications industry.

I'm glad they're getting better hinges. But I just traded my Fold4 for an S23 Ultra. I had the Fold4 since launch and I've loved it. Still think foldables are the future, but the hinge's durability is an issue. I had issues with the glue melting and causing the phone no longer to open fully. Samsung refused to cover it under warranty calling it "cosmetic" so I had to pay to go through Care+. Then my replacement had issues which got replaced and my third unit started getting a weird squeaky hinge issue after just 2 weeks of usage. So I just can't justify staying with a device that has durability issues like this when Samsung won't stand by their own $1800 product. I'll miss it a lot, but the big display and built in S-pen on the S23 Ultra should help ease that pain. Plus I get a better battery and camera system.
I'll be back to the Fold when Samsung's warranty service gets better, the phone finally has dust resistance, the hinge is proven to be more durable, and the outer display is a tad bit wider.

The protector on my Flip 4 started coming off after just a few months. In theory I could have gotten a free new Samsung one, if only they were in stock and somewhere within 50 miles of me (near Baltimore) was authorized to put them on. I got such a run-around from the two authorized repair centers that I gave up and put a third party one on myself, and ironically it's lasted better than the original. That aside, lack of dust protection on the new ones makes them a no-go for me. Something has gotten into my 4's hinge and now it won't lay flat at all, it opens to maybe 170 degrees, which is really annoying. So probably back to slab phones for me for my next one, sadly, as I do like the flip form factor.

As you've covered in the video the screen protectors peeling is a serious issue that I really hope the new home design has fixed. On my Fold 3 I've had to send it back about once a year, since it peeled in almost exactly the same way twice. The bottom edge started lifting, which spread to the left and eventually lifted almost like a zipper up the crease. If the Pixel Fold 2 fixes the battery life and heat issues I'm definitely switching to that, but I don't want to jump ship now since my Blackberry Priv had those issues and eventually became unusable because of the extra wear on the battery for it.

I have flip4 since december and i've peeled the screen protector months ago and honestly feel like should've done it sooner. No issues and the screen is so much better off now. I'm generally an extra-accurate person, but still believe absolute need for the protector is exaggerated. Then again, i do treat like some piece of luxury :)
Thank you for the good review. I'm sticking with my beloved bespoke flip4 for now. I hope flip 6 will have app launching on coverscreen properly natively supported, silly it still isn't with 5.

Hi michael, thanks for the video. A question as a fellow fold user: have you ever had problem of paint chipping on the hinge? i had the same chipping on fold 3 and 4 (both with official cover)... both phones with painting chipped off at the centre of the back hinge

Thanks for another great video Michael! I have to say that this video just continues to reinforce my position that these phones aren't for me. If one were given to me or I could buy one for half the price, it would be a different story, but I cannot justify dropping this amount of money on them. For me, the biggest problem is the durability. Yes, I hear you that it's far better then some would have you believe, but given just the stories you tell, I don't think I'd want these phones without a 3-4 year, full inner screen warranty. More than that though, the poor battery life at shipping implies that I'll be REALLY suffering after 2 years and given that the cameras are basically 2 years old and weren't top of the market when they were new, I just get even more worried about buyer's remorse.
Bottom line for me, I think these phones are best for people who are more flush with cash than I am, and feel the need to update phones every 1-2 years.
Thanks again for a great video, and I look forward to the next one!
    P.S.
Speaking of expensive devices I can't justify buying, you need to stop wearing the Marq Captain... I am seriously jealous of how good that thing looks and every time I see it, those feelings come right back to the surface!

I just traded in my Z Fold 3 for the Pixel Fold a little less than a month ago. Had owned the Z Fold 3 since launch and had to have the screen protector replaced on four different occasions. Luckily, I live in the Bronx, so the Samsung Store in Manhattan was only a subway ride away; but it was still bothersome whenever I had to go because I would have to wait at the store no less than an hour and a half for the whole process. The very last time I got the protectors replaced was in late April, and the inner display one started lifting literally the next day, not even 24hrs after it had been installed.

Kind of crazy that the flip 5 has a 3.6 inch cover screen in 2023 and just a couple of years ago the iphone 4 had a 4 inch screen.

On ya’ Micheal much appreciated as always for your hard work. I’ve been sitting on the flip / fold fence since the first Samsung Gen 1 fold and not convinced yet, although the larger front display is finally here on the flip 5 I am just not enticed to leap off that fence. Samsung just seem to be too relaxed with their competition hot on their heels and is why I’ll enter the flip / fold world elsewhere most likely with Motorola’s razr plus.

Worth noting the software improvements like increased recents in the taskbar are *not* exclusive to the Fold 5. They're just OneUI 5.1.1 improvements which will be available on at least the Fold 4 if not the Fold 3 as well.

I had the same issue with the screen protector peeling on my Flip 4. Too bad to hear that they aren't improving it, though maybe the hinge design will help. On that note, I had the hinge break twice on my Flip 4s so hopefully the new design is more durable.

I'll rock the pixel fold until the fold 6 or if one plus looks better. There's just not quite enough of a difference for me to trade. Coming from the fold 4 I loved it but wanted some change. Thanks for helping me make my decision. I like the integrated s pen in the case and no gap which is a big plus, because it shows they're slowly incorporating other foldable hardware but next year they'll hopefully make some more changes. I also hope for a purple fold option one year 😂

10:25, don’t get your hopes up Mike, I had the same issue with my multiple Folds. It means, it’s going to get worse, not better. I finally traded mine in for Ultra S23. As much as I love the foldables, esp. Fold, due to multiple Fold phone screen issues I have also folded, & I am going to stick with traditional phones until they get more stable because of screen issues.

Finally! A cover screen worth using for more then just resuming music playback and checking the time!
Seriously, the notification management on the Flip 3/4 cover screen is a joke. My Fossil Gen5 smartwatch can do more then the Flip 3 cover screen which is really sad...
While I'm keeping an eye out for any new foldable, and these changes to the Flip are really exciting, I have sworn to myself that I'm only going to upgrade either once my Flip bites the dust (aka UTG cracks) or it stops getting software updates. Hopefully the latter is going to be the reason why. So far tho, the Flip 3 seems to be my most durable phone yet, dropped it once accidentally from shoulder height onto tile flooring and no visible damage outside of some minor scuffs...

This is the guy I look for when new foldables come to town - and it seems hes as excited about them as I was (not much).
Bigger external displays, to me, are design killers. They just dont make any sense. Make phones look generic, and thats not something I want when I spend that much on a phone. Im glad I didnt wait for flip5 and got me a 4 last month. Great price, great phone, and basically same experience youll get from a 5 with same batery, cameras and crease hehe.

I just pre-ordered the Fold 5 as my first foldable from an S22 Ultra ($1000 trade-in) and I already knew it would be an incremental update....but that's okay! The Fold 4 was already very successful so I'll take a tried and true design with a better hinge and minor software and hardware improvements. Companies do it all the time, and incrementation is a way to get closer to perfection.

I still love my flip 3. The centre hasn't cracked yet (knocking on the laminated wood of my bedside table). I have maybe 2-3 scratches on the screen and have been without a screen cover for about a year (no samsung locations to get a new one). It's still fast and does what i need it to do. I'm quite happy but I'm excited for full screen flips in the future.

  • @Just_call_me_scott
    @Just_call_me_scott 10 месяцев назад

I got my Flip 4 back in November and was quite excited for it. Got it and loved it and still do. But I don't think I will continue with the flip. Main reason from the review is that the cover screens are becoming bigger. I always feared scratching my phone whilst in my pocket since the Edge 7 and then it became worse with the Edge 9. Not sure what I was putting in my pockets along side my phone as I always have one pocket exclusively for my phone, but those models got scratched up very bad. And since then it's always a worry and the small but usable Flip 4 front screen is perfect for me. But I also can't keep using the Flip 4, although I haven't had the adhesive give way (touch wood) the fact that it doesn't close all the way has the phone screen covered in dust, lint, ect. And has developed what look like scratches. So I think I'm gonna opt for an ultra model after my contract as my last favourite phone was the Note 4.
