    The only way I can see flip phone internal screens becoming more durable to scratches (to an extent) would be if they can create some sort of hybrid screen. They could have glass on the top and bottom (or left and right) and somehow integrate the plastic part into the glass but only where the fold is.

    • @pietro937
      @pietro937 Год назад +63

      Actually the screen is indeed a hybrid made of glas and plastic. Right now it is not possible to bend glas this shape and size (that has something to do with the size of the cross section). A good example is glas fiber. Toughness of glass but nearly flexible as rubber. All of that thanks to the small cross section. So it is understandable that foldable sceeens have plastic but add a bit of glass to enhance their toughness.

    Usually very hard on my phone (and can't really escape it at work). Otterbox and a glass screen protector have saved it so many times from some rather ugly falls, bumps, and scratches. Not the most aesthetic case but it hasn't let me down protection-wise.

    • @deathghost65

      Dbrand has nice bulky protective cases like Otterbox but they sell high quality stickers that attach to the case to give it a new look. The stickers feel smooth and not glossy. So if you wanna change the look again just change the sticker (about $25 for the sticker). The case itself has a very grippy rubber that feels kinda like smooth stone (about $50 for the case and sticker together). But the Dbrand case doesn’t block ports (or at least the cases I got didn’t) and isn’t as water proof as the Otterbox though.

      i would not remove the plastic screen protector, my fold 3s screen protectors started bubbling on its own 6 months into its life, i ignored it and didnt get it re-applied, eventually 3 months later the inner screen turned black in the center, and stopped working. I personally believe the screen protector is a key component of the screen, without it your phone will be a ticking time bomb, in terms of your screens longetivity. The screen protector on my fold 4 has stayed on with no signs of bubbling at all, and seems to have been applied with more strength. i have not had any issues with it, I bought the fold 5, and i imagine i wont have any issues with that either.

    I'm watching this on a Flip 5, and I love it. The phone takes perfectly serviceable photos unless you are a photo snob. The only issue I've noticed is zooming in kills the quality much faster than on my S21. Otherwise, I love the form factor, and while the phone closed is thicker, it still feels like it takes up less real estate in my pocket. Battery life has still been good as well. It lasts me all day at work and into the night.

    As you mentioned before, you have workers hands and i can verify that the rough skin on a thumb, is enough to scratch that plastic screen.

    It's my first foldable, upgrading from my 4 years old galaxy s10. It was honestly still a very serviceable phone, which is why I picked another samsung device, but it's age is just starting to show by giving me lags and it's horrendously slow storage making me wait half a minute to load old pictures.
    I love the cover screen and I'm using it a lot, my brother in law uses an older flip and he pretty much always have it unfolded unless if it's going to his pocket. The Flip 5 however give you a reason to keep it folded, it's less of a gimmick now and more of a convenience thing. I have a small hand and the cover is AMAZING for one handed use, small things that I usually would do 2 handed can be done in the cover screen. Replying to messages, music, navigation, selecting routines for my smart devices, watching youtube, and even play games!
    For the inner screen, I really overestimated on bad the crease would feel and looks. It's thought it would be more of a gouge, but it's less distracting and the slope even feel nice to fidget with. Also, I don't know how they did it, it feels like glass, and it's way tougher than you would think. You REALLY have to intentionally try to scratch it with your fingernails for it to leave a mark.
    Can't think of a downside, all I have to compare it to is my old S10 so everything's an upgrade.

    • @milinddixit6583
      @milinddixit6583 Год назад +4

      I upgraded from the S20+ which I had for 3 years. This is also my first foldable. Pretty much agree with what you said - also to add the performance is rapid and the battery life is better than I was expecting. I easy get through a day using the camera a lot etc.
      The only things I don't like are the screen does feel (and look in the sun) like plastic to me. Also if you wear polarized sunglasses you can really see its not the same as a normal smartphone screen. But they are far from deal breakers.
      The Cover Screen is game changing - completely changes how I use my phone, and now I can use it all one handed which is a lot more convenient than you think it would be!

    So, I think the curve in the glass breaking when dropped can be a good thing actually. If it was a flat screen, it would still break but then the shattering would be all over the screen, whereas with the curve, most of the breaking is kept in the curve. Although, that said, having the curve gives less area for contact with the ground when dropped, meaning more pressure on a smaller area, so the phone is more at risk of becoming unusable (I would know, I lost an S22 Ultra to an unlucky asphalt drop)

I've definitely lost all the fear I had before getting a folding phone, and whatever my next phone is, it will definitely be another folding phone. Such that most of the screen scratches at a level 7 with deeper groves at level 8, except the part where it folds. It’s hard to do as the glass to plastic transition can’t be chopped. But I think we will have a gradient grass in the future. Be hopeful folks!

    Really loved the front screen, but as a heavy user that relies on a smartphone for work, there isn't enough juice for a full day.
    If the Flip6 will have a bigger battery, faster processor, and better cameras, I'll happily come back to the Flip.

  • @dorinel200849

    I switched to the S8+ about the same time you did. Same thing happened with the Note 10+.
    This year I did the switch ahead of you, but not with the same phone anymore (you can still change your mind about that Flip 5). I went for the S23Ultra. I think that folding phones are not that durable yet and losing microSD slot made me get the 1TB version (which compared to the 512GB version would cost almost one Samsung A54 more).
    I really thought about getting the Fold 5 but the cameras and the plastic display cover made me not. I'll wait to see how much your Flip 5 would last if you get one.
    My Note 10+ still works great, but the S-Pen lost the air functions due to supercap failure and my S8+ needs a new battery (it still has the original battery). Somehow I don't see such a big upgrade from Note10+ to the S23Ultra. The Note10+ is a lot more slimmer and feels better. Also, I like the curves of the display more on the Note10+.
    Have a great day!
