I've always been worried about the durability of my Flip5. But seeing this, although teardowns and durability tests can't be 100% correlated with real-world durability, does give me assurance as I also plan on using my Flip5 for many years to come. Great video.

I love innovation in tech industry, so it's a good thing some companies still care about innovation unlike apple with their HUGE innovations like USB C , always on display etc 😂

    • @skyflakes3623
      @skyflakes3623 Год назад

@aaaaaa-hh8cq Honestly, I had the same thoughts that the flipping won't be useful for me (I mainly bought the phone for the style and to try something new). But after, like, what is now three weeks, I find myself using the cover display a lot. Some days, I use the cover display more than the main display.
The use I found for the cover display is by doing essential tasks like messaging, maps, food delivery, weather, and other apps that are useful for the day.
Also, I noticed that the cover display holds me back from further diving deep down with phone usage, like suddenly opening TikTok, Instagram, and other time-wasting apps. People say the cover display has limited usage, which they find as a con, but for me, I found it as a pro.
Lastly, the "flip" makes the phone easy to stand. So, when taking photos, I never ask for anyone to hold my phone to take a photo of me or us. I just simply flip the phone in an angle, and it stands on its own.

This is less evident in the premium phones but the low- and mid-range models show it very clearly.

On another note, does anyone else get concerned when Zach cuts away the screen (or back of the phone) with a razor blade with his fingers directly in line of an unfortunate slip of the blade? No worries I guess because he could always reconstruct a thumb or other finger and make it work as perfectly as most of the devices he tears down. 😂

I bought the Flip5 after a few weeks of hemming and hawwing. It doesn't have as good a camera as my old phone, and the battery is smaller, but this time around I was mostly interested in the novelty and a chance to try and new less bulky form factor, and boy am I glad I did. The screen and hinge durability is a concern though, and I kinda expect this phone to not last much longer than two years with regular and a little careless use, as is normal for humans.
I hope next year's model isn't just a minor upgrade on the old model. These phones would be perfect with a bigger battery and more competent camera. I really don't wanna carry around a giant phone-slate in my pocket anymore after experiencing this.

Altough flip and foldable phones are more durable then people think but theirs no way they would last 6 years
Atleast untill now unless they have some kind of technology becouse of the screen
After a couple years from about 2 years or so the screen might have deep scratches on the middle of the screen and over time might crack the screen where it bends because of fisics, altough it would most likely be still usable
But you might get 4 years out of the phone because I've seen several first Gen flips in really good condition, how long have they been used, idk

3:41 This is the moment I twitched hard because I've seen so many of your teardowns that I knew you were about to kill the screen since you didn't hold your knife perfectly flat but rather at an angle that would apply pressure to the pixels and would ultimately kill them. Then you started wiggling your knife and my soul left my body 👻 Most intense 5 seconds of my day!
PS: when you wiggled your knife you applied diagonal pressure and sheer forces while foldables can only withstand pressure and tensile stresses in the folding direction.

The columns of pixels that failed during the initial dismantling seems to have intermittently started working again after reassembly. I am guessing that some, if not all electrical connections are by conductive adhesives or maybe even just mechanical pressure.
I must say, the repairability seems to be more than acceptable for a modern flippy phone, if it actually comes back into a more or less functioning state after that treatment. Not even a cracked glass panel. A skilled technician could probably switch the battery without any major hiccups for a normal use phone. I think Samsung will get my stamp of approval and a thumbs up for this one.

So be careful to always keep your data backed up or have another phone nearby. I will never trust the flip ever again, I lost a lot of valuable data on my phone because of this problem.

My issue with these folding phones is the plastic displays that are needed to allow a foldable format.
While this one has a great chance of lasting 4+ years, I bet one month in the micro scratches on the display will become an issue, not only triggering OCD, but becoming an issue when viewed under direct sunlight.
I really hope in the coming years manufacturers figure out some new material or coating that fixes this issue, perhaps something similar to regenerating paint coats used on cars.
