- Scene of The Mentalist season 4 episode 1 "SCARLET RIBBONS". This scene was simply amazing. Simon was great ;) Of course he convinced the giury! He was awesome! And you can read the sadness in his voice....but I also noticed how he became a little bit more...you know, relaxed about the whole situation. It's like he's moving on, and has realized that there's no need to freak out when it comes to Red John. He was victim, he's still a victim, but now he's also a murderer. And this still sounds creepy to me.
If you kill a murderer, the number of murderers stays the same.
Solution: kill more than one.
Like "Dexter".

I immensely enjoyed The Mentalist, however, I'm glad they brought it to an end when they did, the entire premise of the show was based around the cat and mouse game Jane had with Red John, so when Red John was removed from play, the show practically lost its entire foundation, I think it's good that they ended it then rather than be it a saddening testimony of having to watch as one of my all-time favorite shows gets dragged through seasons upon seasons lacking the quality and entertainment it once offered.
I do hope however that it gets renewed when and if the show's producers and executives come up with a new premise that's as great as the first one, if not better.
I quit watching it after he killed Red John and went to the FBI.

This scene was incredibly acted by Simon Baker. The raw emotion you hear in his voice when he is talking about Red John is so real and you really sense the pain and sadness in him especially when he describes exactly what Red John does to people and how he had no choice to do what he did. His expressions and reactions made it even more hard hitting and it really made Patrick become a real character and person. This is one of my favourite shows
The entire series was great purely because of Simon Baker's acting alone.
It's one of those "no one else could have done it" kind of roles.

Put yourself in his head space. Jane has had twelve years of knowing what was done to his wife and daughter. He has the knowledge to tell which cuts were made when, and he can replay every possible variation of events from the moment Red John entered his home, to Jane's discovery of their bodies.
Every cut, every scream, everything they might have said, cried or begged for. Every single conceivable moment, on repeat in the back of his mind. For twelve years.
Simon Baker touched a mere fraction of that pain for his performance. It was very well done.

Lawyer here. Last line is actually prohibited in real life. Its referred to the "Golden Rule." Asking the jury to depart from neutrality and make it personal is a big no no.
Non-American here so little knowledge about the american legal system: But the jury can decide on its own can't it? A non guilty verdict by a jury cannot be overturned right? So if the jury were to decide his innocence that would legally speaking still free him entirely. Or have I got that wrong?
@@flipsgraf1335 actually a judge can overturn a jury verdict. As far as I know it's rarely done but they can do it. Edit actually I read more into it and a judge can only overturn a guilty verdict. If a jury finds him not guilty the judge cannot overrule them and declare him guilty.
@@EvilLoynis Yeah thats what I was about to comment. Only guilty verdicts can be overturned, makes sense historically speaking but unfortunately I only know that because it was abused during the Jim Crow Era to keep Lynchers out of jail....
It is not prohibited in all legal proceedings in real life. It is prohibited in many civil proceedings, but though discouraged in criminal proceedings, it is not prohibited. And anyway, he wasn't represented by a lawyer - and such rules are applied less rigidly in pro se cases. In real life a judge might instruct the jury to disregard such an argument in his closing instructions, but would be under no legal obligation to interrupt the self-represented defendant and stop him from making the argument.
@J K He's not forcing anyone to do anything he was referring to a defense lawyer asking the jury to depart from neutrality in order to gain a "non guilty" verdict as something that might get you in trouble with the BAR association.

Everytime Patrick Jane conveys his vulnerability... I can't handle it. His voice breaks and so does my heart T_T I miss this series so much.
I feel like the words ' I'm not guilty of killing Timothy Carter because Timothy Carter doesn't exist' and Red John killed my family what would you do are what caused Jane to literally get away with murder. They didn't want to find him guilty cause they could see themselves doing the same thing and Jane gave them a loop hole.

Abzify1 ☆ It is called "jury nullification" and has precedence in American law. But they do not want jurors to know that they have the power to judge not only the FACTS of the case, but also juries can judge whether the law itself is fair and just, in the case before them.

I never noticed that when he talked about red John's actions, he wasn't using the past tense. In other words, he spoke about red John as if he was still alive. This whole time and I never even noticed that even in the trial you can see that he knows red John is still alive

For him it was a combination of revenge and vengeance, culminating in a moral obligation from which he saw no other path........ the brutal murder of one's own family being a helluva catalyst for such action.
Revenge has a cost that's true, but what is cost to a man who lost everything? His family was killed. Sure he would lose/dissapoint his friends but he would make the choice to kill red John every time given the chance.
Edit: this was in response to a message above that has been deleted. I have no intentions of deleting it, but it makes sense since the person talked about revenge costing more than its worth as i recall.

As far as I remember, Jane has only killed 3 times in the show, the first was when he shotgunned that a guy who was about to kill Lisbon, second time is when he killed the person he though was Red John, and the third was when he killed the real Red John

What a powerful speech. The music accompanies it brilliantly, and Simon conveys his emotions simply and better than ever. Amazing scene.
He’s not a danger to society. The only person who needed to fear him was Red John, and he’s done for. I’d let him out, too.
It’s pretty accurate to real life too, given what happened to Gary Plauche. No way a rational jury would convict someone for that
Everyone saying that he played it perfectly because he really acts like a real person and you truly believe him end his emotions. But for my throughout the entire show, Jane was always the perfect manipulist. He knows exactly how and what to say and not because he is trying to play it like a normal human but because you always feel that there is something special about him. His ability to read people and knowing how to manipulate them is what he has done in this speech again and not being a normal guy.
I'd say trying to influence others is what we do since we realize our selves are separate from others who have their own needs and wants. he's just really good at it.
He was manipulating the jury, because he didn't want to go to jail, but he did it by speaking the truth of his feelings about Red John. He had to choose his words carefully, because he wanted the Jury to sympathize with him.
Just about anyone would do what Jane would do to the guy that killed their family. People kill for less all the time.

kara clarkson By this episode (4x01) Jane said the count was around 28. The complaining around "Red John" death was because no matter who he is it's still illegal to do justice yourself. Jane is not a cops and it wasn't self defense it was a execution in a public area so he had no legal justification to his act.
Even if Jane did the whole a favor by killing a serial killer the law reinforcement had to follow the law and put him on trial.
Police can't kill people either, because they only have the authority delegated, but not abdicated, by the citizens.
Only the courts can kill people, and the courts are still an extension of the people.
It's not about right and wrong, it's about the law, the police and courts are here to maintain order, if you allow vigilanties to kill whoever they deam evil then the entire system breaks down. It's sucks but at the end of the day you need to allow the most evil scum sucking slime in the world some rights, or none of us will have any.
There is justice, and there is the law. As per justice, everyone believes those who do bad should be punished. As per the law, you can't go around playing Green Arrow.

What is so good in this show is that we can see all the pain in his eyes...

Woah! I was crying and sniffling by 20 secs in! I love how he was almost asking anyone in the court room WHAT else he could have done, as if he had racked his own brain and could only find that one option. Wonderfully acted!

The charecters are so real so authentic that you belive it actually happened in real.
What makes him talk in this passionate way, his great responsibility for his family. So, we can say, he is a real great father and husband.

Every time I watch this scene it hits me as if I am beginning to know who Red John was although I completed watching the entire series. The moment when Jane starts describing his atrocities what is merely a glimpse of the actual deed in tune with the music so perfectly can not be explained in words. Whenever I come to that specific moment my body starts shivering.
Reminds me another scene of him talking with Lisbon:
Lisbon - "That is not justice, that is vengeance"

Justice is just. Vengeance can be either just or unjust because humans are subjective about everything. So you never know which one you're getting if it is vengeance.

How are you objecting an opening/closing speech? That makes no sense. Plus, Jane was representing himself, what gives him the ability to testify in a more storytelling way.
@@LuiizRS You brushed on it at the end there; all he did in this statement was fully admit to what he's accused of. His defense is basically "yeah but you would do the same?". The jury will be asked to deliberate "Is he guilty of these crimes?" and they have his testimony that yes, he is. This is why nearly every pro se rep case ends with the defendant losing. Barring Jury nullification he did nothing but land himself a life sentence. Side note you can object to anything spoken in a case. If the jury is hearing it, you can object and state your claim.

This was such a shocker! I NEVER guessed that woman was psycho, I fully believed every word she said! It's a good thing Jane saw through her, though. Like he always does.
Anyway, I loved this scene. He is such a passionate speaker... Simon Baker is honestly one of the best actors I've ever seen.

Something similar to this happened in real life. A man, on camera, shot dead the guy who raped his son while he was in custody and didn't serve any jail time.
I cried when he said this. This show came out when I was young I sort of knew what it was but never watched it. Now that I’ve started to its a very unique show because it’s one of the only ones that has hit me hard aside from Breaking Bad, House, Criminal Minds and Dexter
Simon Baker is extremely talented and it’s hard to portray a character like Patrick Jane who feels so much pain, anger and sadness from losing his family in such a horrific way, when Simon/Patrick shows those emotions it’s hard not to feel the same way.
I used to watch this show when I was younger. Good to know that others loved it too.

As a juror, that would be a difficult decision. What do you do to a man that killed the serial killer, that killed his family? How would you decide? One could argue, That he did society a favor. And yet he IS guilty of taking a life.

There wouldn't be a jury. He admitted his guilt. Jury trials determine guilt or innocence. It just goes straight to the judge for sentencing.
However, the law works on the 'reasonable man' assumption (in any given situation... What would a reasonable man do?). The judge would take this into consideration when passing judgement. He would be found guilty, but given a lenient sentence.

@@strangelee4400 Admitting he killed the man isn't the same as a plea of guilty. Only guilty plea would go straight to sentencing. This is why Jane is a genius - he says: ""Timothy Carter did not exist" --> therefore he is not guilty of murdering Timothy Carter, even if he killed a man. You can only be found guilty of what you're charged with. He gave the jury a way to find him not guilty and they took it.
what do you do to rabid dogs? You put them down. You are punishing someone, who is doing your job, not because you disagree, but because of your ego, that only YOU can do that, only YOU are allowed to be a savior to others, no matter how many people die or get injured before that happens.
Taking a life isn't always an immortal thing to do. A soldier loses more than half of his body on the field and will die painfully in minutes. Is it wrong for his friend to mercy kill him? No. Is it wrong to kill a man in self defense? No. Is it wrong to kill someone who killed so many and will kill again? I don't think so.

Such a good show. I was afraid that they would finish with a "I'm above this now, and you'll just have fair trial". But no, the guy killed his wife and daughter, and more than 20 other people, so he strangled him to death, and it was fully deserved. There are not many other shows with that much common sense nowadays.

I can relate completely ! I am still waiting for justice for what happened to my innocent infant daughter 13 years later ! In-between the faulty firings, almost getting hit by a plow in CT, run over by a truck in AZ, the destruction of almost all of my property ( what little I have left) after being screwed with terribly where I have lived, and not to mention all of the psycho drama for over 40+ years ! It is so insane ! I have been trying so hard to retain an attorney who cannot be intimidated or brought off. I am not kidding...it has been brutal...for almost 5 decades ...

One of my favourite series of all time, really great acting and script overall. But sadly they did not manage to end the Red John story properly.
I personally thought it was perfect. To see that under all the lies, masks and trickery, Red John was nothing but a pathetic man with a brilliant mind. Once lies and manipulation stopped shielding him, he was crushed.
This one scene alone has made me want to go into acting
Mentalist changed my whole worldview about revenge. I would now choose to take my personal vengeance if God forbid I was ever put in his situation.

Because Patrick Jane is representing himself he will be given a bit of latitude in what he says.
But the bottom line for the prosecution is how you going to find 12 jurors who once having the details laid out for them are even going to want to convict the husband& father of a brutally murdered family?
The Mentalist is hands down the best TV show I've ever come across. It got me hooked to it more than the other shows that I watched or that I still watch. Its available on Amazon Prime so its definitely worth a shot!

Jury Nullification - by the way democracy is set up (a jury can never be told their verdict is wrong because that would negate their use, and a criminal can’t be tried twice) a jury can ‘nullify’ laws by ruling people innocent when they’re clearly guilty, and at the same time can ‘create’ laws by doing the opposite (which is admittedly harder because of appeals). It happens more than you think, although it probably peaked during the civil rights era
It's a shame todays society will punish a Man for protecting or seeking vengeance for any member of his family. As a Man and a Father that is the iron clad unwritten rule.

SL Don't live by emotions, live by intellect. Emotions are when mistakes are made as thoughts are removed from actively participating in decisions.

I really Don't care, saying something deep doesn't make you sound intelligent,comparing your mind or any other's mind to his mind (not saying he's insane) is pointless where all radical thoughts doesn't seem to matter anymore, because the two people he's loved the most in the world had been taken away from him in such a crude way. Image the guilt of him not be able to be there to protect them. Controlling his emotions would be impossible, just image a guy constantly tries to seduce your wife/ gf (moving away is not an option), how would you act? This's similar to what haunted him,lost, guilt and hatred.
As a musician myself I love a good film and tv score i think music can bring scenes alive but i wish there wasn’t any music in this scene his raw voice is horrifying enough to carry the scene i think music almost cheapens it

Why do you think they keep the camera angle fixed at jane throughout this scene, it is because they want Jane to address the audience directly, and audience watching the series is the Jury if what he has done is right or not. Such a brilliant thinking of the DOP.

Patrick was willing to lose it all for revenge, which was an effective solution.

A great scene ! I can relate to his character ! What was done to my infant daughter in Florida is clinically/criminally insane ! The lies, manipulation and torture ! All true ! I am still waiting for the actual TRUTH to be revealed ! She never had a chance....and neither did I...

This is what made Jane so good at what he did! Jane once got a cocky young man to admit that he wasn't a slow dim-witted kid, but rather, a cunning murderer. Jane had the ability to manipulate the best possible results from people and here he is doing it to a group of people all at once. It's not a trick, he just knows how to use the truth and rationalize it to the point where people understand! Man, I miss this show! Simon Baker was fantastic in this role!

I truly believe the writer/actor relationship is surely symbiotic. They need each other to survive and none could reach their potential without the other!

See it this way: if you lose your loved ones, you die as well. Maybe not physically, but you die an inner death. It changes you forever, unable to recover from it. This is what makes you (to me at least) not able to bear any guilt because you are dead already. So a family member killing the murderer of his family is like a dead man killing the murderer. You just didn't know this man was dead already. So the actual guilt is on the court itself for not having taken care of Jane the moment he became the victim.
