Who are we defending the gospel against?

The scriptures are clear that God's people repeatedly abandon the faith while deluding themselves into thinking they are righteous. Why do we think we're immune from this trend?

For me, the cognitive dissonance hit in 2019... And it was completely out of the blue and wasn’t something I was thinking about, so that’s how I know it wasn’t self-induced. Just one day I started to feel like something wasn’t right within the leadership of the church. And that thought shocked me because I have ALWAYS pushed follow the prophet no matter what (and I pushed that so hard I pushed my oldest daughter right out of the church). And I firmly believed that our brethren could make no mistakes or lead us astray. So when this feeling came I tried to figure out the where and why I felt that way and I started making a list of things that didn’t feel right, and boy did that list have a lot on it. Things that were being said from the pulpit that I KNEW were not true, or things that were being done that didn’t feel like they came from Christ. And then covid hit and “that letter” came out and all the kowtowing to the arm of flesh and it just all made me sick, but it caused me to examine my testimony and I realized that I HAD placed a significant amount of faith in men, and that I was NOT firmly sitting on the rock of Christ. And it took about a year, but now I can say that my testimony is stronger than ever in the gospel and doctrine of Jesus Christ, and that mistakes from the top (which do keep happening, unfortunately- can we say “temporary commandments?!”) don’t disturb that testimony. I feel closer to Jesus than I ever have, and I will defend HIM in life and to the death if I have to.
But this whole saga was a long, painful process, and you’re right - it makes people uncomfortable so they would rather apologize and rationalize why things are said and done rather than do the work and dig deeper to find out what Christ actually said and taught. “What would Jesus do?” is really the best question we could ask ourselves in 2024.

My shock came even before that as I saw Bishops excommunicated or supporting against women in divorce of abusive marriages. I was also told not to bring my GS Service Dog to Church by the Stake President from a General authority because they needed to make me an example to keep other people from bringing pets. I'd been coming to Church for 5 years with that $30,000 valued well trained service dog because of 3 TIA and a bad horse accident which a prior Bishop had given me permission to do. After I wrote letters to the Bishopric and Church headquarters, I saw a church magazine article saying service dogs should be allowed and non mobile people could not be helped into the church by volunteers because of insurance liability which the Stake President had suggested instead of my service dog. I sent the article out but none came to respond. Then covid hit and as I was warning against the jabs and face covers because I knew the history of biological warfare, the church and members were shut down and encouraged to jab and cover. Churches that fought back are flourishing. My testimony was strong before I knew the church existed so my testimony of Christ has Never waned. Jeremiah 22 and Ezekiel 33, 2Thessilonians 2 and D&C 112 tell a narrative of what is coming and I trust Christ and His Doctrine to Always be true. Prophecy is a testimony of Jesus Christ, His sacrifice for His creation of mankind that they might repent through Him and find eternal rest and joy with Him and our Father. He is soon to return and while other churches are shouting it from the house tops, this membership is trying to figure out if their leader was telling them that glorious news through code. He is coming. Read the scriptures for yourself. They abound with that glorious message! Prepare for it. He's coming to clean His House first. Think about that! I'm praying that we will have studied about Him and know and love Him when He returns because we will be like Him.

@@FreeThinker-n1t I’m sorry that happened to you. I have experienced unrighteous dominion as well from my stake president. And to your point about “trying to figure out the code.” That is NOT how God wants His prophets and apostles to spread His word. How do I know? Thousands of years of history! To say that all of a sudden God’s prophets must now speak in code as to not offend anyone even though that’s been the OPPOSITE of how it has ALWAYS been done is ridiculous. Our church is worried about itself as a business and losing its tax exempt status. But they’re losing a lot more than that in the process. It’s heartbreaking because I got to experience a little bit of the remaining boldness in the 70s and 80s and THAT is the church I love.

When I go to church, I feel so much grief. I have finally been able to recognize what I am experiencing for what it is. Most weeks feel hollow, most comments I make seem to go over everyone's head or make them squirm, and I am left wondering, "Am I the only one that is having this experience?" I rarely feel the spirit at church any more, to the point I often wonder if there is something wrong with me, and then there will be a moment where I *do* feel that old comforting feeling, and it makes me so sad that this is not the norm anymore. Today the sacrament song talked about Christ's "love and grief beyond degree", and it was a moment for me to know that we grieve only because we love- and it connected me to Christ is a new way. Coming home from church and listening to your musing today, felt comforting. I am not the only one out there that is navigating this.

I honestly have a really hard time listening to the fluffy stuff. It actually pushes me in the opposite direction because it’s just not reality. My life isn’t full of touching, emotional, cry worthy experiences. It is full of trial, facing faith in the face, understanding truth and defending misconceptions by myself and others experiences. This podcast by Conor actually massively helped me when I was running from church. I needed truth, apologetics and someone who confidently explained the good and bad and had deep faith regardless. I can’t thank people like Conor enough.

My father taught at the UofU Institute of Religion from about 1970 to 2010. His specialty was 19th century Joseph Smith / Mormon history in Kirtland Ohio and Clay Co Missouri and Doctrine & Covenants revelations. He was "called in" to the First Presidency three times and told "Stop teaching that" (whatever 'that' happened to be). Eventually, Gordon Hinkley authorized the multi volume, extremely complete Joseph Smith Papers (financed by car dealer Larry Miller) and the History Details prohibited by prior First Presidencies are written for all to read.
Of course, my brothers and I heard the unfiltered truth from about age 14; consequently our current vulnerability to Reddit / Gish Gallop-ing anti-mormonism stuff is close to zero. Many of my father's students told him "If my parents had heard the actual truth about (fill in the blank) as you have explained it, they would not have apostatized."

I have come to the conclusion that the talks we hear are very inspired, because we as a people are praying to the Lord to hear fluffy stuff. Soft words, light on repentance, and we are all in the mire and sad and broken and lonely and just so sad and that the Lord can help us. I can get that down the street at any non-denominal church. You helped me survive a recent faith crisis concerning the leadership of the church endorsing COVID vaccinations. The relief for me came in hearing a rational, faithful member (in yourself) reinforcing my own understanding that general authorities (and even prophets) are not infallible. Thank you. Concerning the question as to whether your musings are inspiring, my observation would be that they inspire those who find resonance in the questions you pose and the observations you share. Thank you again. I have many concerns about the course and direction of the Church, but also know that the church is the chosen vehicle for the Lord's work in these days. Heaven help us! Pun intended. I have the blessing of having received extraordinary spiritual witnesses and still seek to enhance my understanding of the intellectual evidence of the Savior's gospel and the mission of Joseph Smith. I understand my own mission and want to encourage you to keep doing yours. You are important to the work, my beloved brother in Christ.

Hello Connor, my parents are in your ward! I love what you said, that it’s ok to analyze, critique, and at times disagree with a church leaders and discuss with them about our concerns. This doesn’t make you an “apostate” or someone who is going to leave the church. “Evil speaking of the Lord’s anointed” refers to people making up lies about Joseph Smith, parroting unverified rumors, and blackmailing church leaders. Disagreeing with a church leader’s opinion and then discussing it with them in a respectful way is not “evil speaking of the Lord’s anointed”. Some people are so focused on conformity and “loyalty” that they lash out with harsh rhetoric against anyone who, with good intent, speaks up when they see a problem.
We recently had an issue in my stake where I wrote several emails to the stake president and spoke with him on the phone warning him of some issues taking place, but he was not convinced the issues were really taking place. Two weeks later the issues blew up, and he was shortly thereafter released from his office as stake president. At first when the stake president dismissed me, I doubted myself. But when the situation blew up and he was later released, I saw I really had been inspired to raise my concern.
Sure, we shouldn’t presume to stretch forth our hand and usurp authority to steady the arch, but also, at times we may be like Jethro who gives wise and well intentioned advice, leaving it up to the church leader to confirm with the Lord the righteousness of our counsel:
    Exodus 18
17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
God didn’t command Jethro to lead the Israelites. But Jethro as a wise father in law and priesthood mentor was able to share some advice with Moses. He told Moses to check with the Lord if the advice was good. Moses heeded the advice. Was Jethro trying to “steady the ark”? Did God smite down Jethro for giving Moses advice? No. And Moses was meek. He was meek above all the people in the face of the earth. He recognized good advice when he heard it, and applied it, choosing wise men to help share the burden of judging and governing over Israel. He delegated.
Jethro wasn’t an apostate. He was a supporter of Israel.
I’m glad I came across your video. I made a video last week about the Higher Priesthood, and spoke about the patriarchal order. A lot in common with your video last week as well.

I've had a similar experience. The word "Gentile" is not simply referring to Americans or Western Europeans generally, it's referring to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints specifically. Connor's consistent reference to the wheat and the tares is hyper relevant for our times. My recommendation for all is to follow the commandment of Jesus Christ and study/search/ponder deeply and consistently the words of Isaiah!! I've recently come to see that getting us to study Isaiah IS the whole purpose of the Book of Mormon. When we begin to understand what he saw (the end from the beginning and how Zion will actually be established), then what we see in the Church that doesn't make sense or feel right will actually give us a greater understanding of where we're at on the Lord's timetable and the judgments that will shortly come to pass.

Something that I have noticed lately is specifically among the 30 and younger class of “men” within the church they have adopted this passive, almost apologetic way of speaking of gospel principles particularly from the pulpit. Instead of using firm words to reassure those listening that they are speaking the truth they would rather act like they don’t want to offend anyone who may disagree with them, completely disregarding those who are on the fence and could use someone who shows strength. There is a fear in them to be masculine.
Christ asked us to be meek, not timid. He asked us to be humble, not passive. Defending the church definitely starts from within, and we are sucking.
I may not agree with everything Connor has to say, but at least he speaks it and makes it clear where he stands, and that is something we desperately need in the Kingdom of God.

I was an apologist for almost 30 years. I realized a year and a half ago i was defending Brigham's church, not the church the Lord restored through Joseph Smith.
There are tens of thousands of us who have left the church, or are being kicked out, who believe in the Restoration but no longer believe that any Brighamite church has the truth.
It is important, the topic of polygamy. If one believes Joseph instituted it (as i used to) the danger is very real of switching over to one of those gruops. Many have, especially if they believe in Joseph's prophetic role, and that government has no authority to dictate how religions operate. I know many people in that group, and I used to believe that dangerous lie... gratefully, i never joined one of those groups.
Since I've learned the truth that Joseph was monogamous and ONLY taught monogamy, it's changed literally everything. I thank God for opening my eyes and for the opportunity to repent for my unbelief/believing incorrect traditions of my fathers ❤

I've listed to a bunch of lectures by Brian Hales and Don Bradley and they seem to have a lot of evidence, in the form of personal letters and such, proving that he was. I've listened to Connor's musing on the subject, and while he addresses some evidence contrary to things Brigham and other leaders said, he doesn't present against the personal letters by JS. Can someone please direct me to a reliable book on the subject that refutes all the "evidence"? I would really appreciate it.

In the past several years, I've discovered the importance of developing self-awareness about our motives. This is not something that is easy or that comes naturally. We have to be able to be completely honest with ourselves and to tolerate the discomfort of recognizing our own pride and sinful desires.
I believe that knowing what is factually true (i.e., knowing the truth of matters of church history) is of far lesser importance than of ensuring that our heart is in the right place and seeking Christ. What is true or not we can't change, we can only discover (and very imperfectly, at that), and I don't believe the final judgment is going to be a high school multiple choice exam of a correct knowledge of historical events. God will look into our hearts, and our hearts are revealed through our actions, words, and thoughts.
When you begin with that approach, then you can ensure that you are being a SINCERE seeker of truth. Many people may be on the same path of studying history, and uncover the same truths, but have entirely different motives. Especially when it comes to any unpopular interpretations of church history - even if they are true, we would expect that those that seek to undermine God's kingdom will be looking for those truths as well, but with an entirely different motivation than one who is sincerely seeking the truth merely because it is true.
I've had several friends who have begun the intellectual "search for truth" but it has led them down dark paths, where it is evident to everyone but themselves that they have been deceived, just by looking at the fruits of their own lives. I've seen that one of the most subtle motives that we can succumb to is the desire to be "one of the few that knows the truth," where our search for the truth leads us to seek things that are esoteric, not for their truth, but because they are esoteric. We may reject the mainstream because we don't want to "be a sheep," only to be seduced by the spirit of wanting to be special.
We should look within ourselves, and honestly ask ourselves if we want to know the truth, or if we just want to look sophisticated and intelligent. Are we willing to look like a fool, to appear simplistic, to have others view us as a child? If not, then we may often pass up on what is true and right in front of us, just because we want the thrill of exploring deep, and the esteem of being someone who is intellectual. Even rationality can be a trap, if we care more about the appearance of rationality than about the reason itself.
I've had very personal spiritual witnesses of Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ, and Russell M. Nelson. There are a lot of other things, especially regarding church history, of which I am uncertain, but I really don't need to resolve all of those issues - nor, do I believe, can anyone resolve them, considering the unreliability of historical sources generally. So I won't choose to die on a hill over historical issues like polygamy, because frankly they aren't foundational to my testimony. Church history is interesting, but since I can't observe the events myself, I can never resolve what actually happened with 100% certainty. But there are a small number of things that I do know with 100% certainty, so far as a direct spiritual witness is conclusive.

Yes, Jesus taught against all forms of polygamy. So no matter who started polygamy, BY or Joseph, the Church could not be true, for they would be the false prophets Jesus talked about, who profess to follow him or God but live or believe in things like polygamy, which is contrary to Christ. It seems Joseph Smith did seem to believe in some polygamy at least for some men in the Bible, for he gave Abraham and others a pass for it, holding them up as righteous, despite Joseph's teachings against it and teaching that people who believe in or live polygamy would be false prophets, etc. So Joseph unfortunately didn't seem to stand with and follow Jesus on polygamy or many other things.

Today in Gospel Doctrine I was a little disgruntled over the thoughts and opinions of the teacher and class members over a chapter of scripture in Come Follow Me. Forgive me for not knowing the exact reference , but it was where the Lord wanted to see things that had been written and finding they lacked what the prophet Samuel foretold about many rising from the dead.
The teacher began talking about how journal writing is so important - and so the lesson went.
But, I thought, could it have been that the Savior wanted people to recognize the miracle of it all? That was a huge miracle that reflected His own resurrection.
I just kept thinking, “All things testify of Christ”. Shouldn’t our own lives a journals also testify of Him?

Good teaching here. I joined LDS in the '60's , as a university student of philosophy, when teachings in sunday classes and at Gen COnf were more intellectually challenging. Writings of Nibley and Madsen were especially appealing to me. So much in the mormon church has been dumbed down over the decades. The present prophet, along with some of the apostles, have led thousands astray , urging "jab and cover". Other issues emerging over the last few years have shown how deceitful has been the teaching to "follow the prophet", and that he indeed does NOT "see around corners". We have been commanded , and taught by Joseph Smith himself, to follow the Holy Ghost, our personal gift, and to study and to work to verify whatever we hear from the mormon church leaders, from the news, from where ever. We must dig, dig, dig for truth , and continue digging. Especially in these times. Looking forward to your possibility with RUmble.

I was fortunate in my life. From a very young age, I was aware of the still small voice, helping me and inspiring me. I never thought to think it was God until I got older, but it was always there. That changed when I was 12, about the same time I became a deacon, the still small voice called me to prayer and I started praying on my own. A year later, I heard a man talk about how to have more effective prayer and one of the points he made in his talk was to ask the Lord questions and after asking, listen for the answer. Another point was that if you do not have any questions, ask the Lord for the questions. I started doing that. I started listening to the questions other people were asking about church doctrines and about mysteries and scripture. I would ask those questions in my prayers, and listen for the answers. And guess what? I started getting answers by the still small voice. Then I knew that the voice I had been hearing since a child was the voice of the Lord. I used to spent hours a day meditating on the questions. I would take long walks, studying the questions and answers. At night, while on my knees praying, I would still be studying with the Lord sometimes for hours and I would finally have to force myself to stop and get into bed. I found out later that I had been given the gift of revelation without realizing it.
From age 13 until 19, when I went on my mission, I was only focusing on the questions other people were asking. But that changed with I entered the mission home. Up to that point in time, I had not read the scriptures all the way through. It got me in trouble a few times when people would ask me where I got my answers, expecting me to give chapter and verse and I had no scriptural reference to give them. I knew enough about how people in authority feel about people who say they get their doctrine from God, so I would just say, "Oh, it is just something I have been thinking about." One guy actually told me that if I did not have a scripture to back up what I was saying, it was best to keep my thoughts to myself.
Anyway, getting back to going into the mission home, I thought if I was going to be teaching for the scriptures, it was time that I should read them all the way through and I started with the Book of Mormon and then the D&C and Pearl of great price, and then the Bible. I quickly discovered that most the questions people were asking, had answers in the scriptures. At the same, I discovered that the scriptures gave me a whole lot more questions to ask so I started meditating on the scriptures. For the next 20 years, I carried a triple combination around with me everywhere and those were the only books read and meditated on. For me, who cares what other people had to say. I was solely interested in what the Lord had to say.
In 1973, I was born again when the Lord called me to repentance. In spite of my relationship with him, I had some sins from the my childhood, stealing things and lying about it and then going through puberty, I had a weakness for lust and sometimes I yielded to lust. I repented of those things and Jesus forgave me. After that, the gift of revelation kicked into high gear and my mind was open to see things like I had never seen before. Before being born again, it was like reading by candle light, but after I was born again, it was like somebody turned the lights on.
I was in the Navy, when I was born again, and after I got out, one of my options was to use my VA benefit to go to college. So I asked the Lord about that, and he asked me what I wanted to study. I told him I wanted to study everything but at that point in time, I did not have anything in particular in mind. So the Lord gave me a new option. He said, "You can go to college and learn man's wisdom, man's way, or you can learn of me and learn my wisdom, my way. You choose." Well, duh. I decided to learn his wisdom, his way and I have never been disappointed.
I was sanctified in 1983 and soon after being sanctified, the Lord came to me in the temple nd asked me what I wanted to know. I told him I wanted to know everything from the beginning to the end and everything in between. I wanted to know the truth about the creation of the world and all the deep mysteries, the things that have been hidden since the foundation of the world. He said, "OK." A few days later, while studying the creation, the Lord gave me a vision of the creation. All I am going to say about that is that interpretations of Moses' vision are way off track and have faint resemblance to what really happened. Since then I have continued to have visions and revelation.
Because of my focus on the Jesus, I did not pay much attentions to the leaders of the church. In fact, as I was gaining wisdom, I used to gage my spiritual development by how much more I understood about scripture than the leaders of the church. At one point in time, I got to the point that I discovered all the leaders of the church were spiritually incompetent. They really did not know Jesus nor what they were doing. I wondered why they were so incompetent when in 2010, I discovered the idolatry of the church.
As you read the scriptures, the gateway to the destruction of God's people was idolatry. In every case, when the kings or rulers set up images, it was just a matter of time and every sin in the book was being committed and destruction was poured out on the people. Consider the wisdom of Solomon. In the end, he threw wisdom to the wind and let his wives put up idols in Jerusalem and the kingdom was divided shortly after he died and in the end. it was because the people would not repent of their Idolatry and all the attendant sins that Jerusalem was destroyed.
Now consider, the leaders of the LDS church. I am old enough to remember when America was great and the church was the fastest growing church in the world. That all began to change in 1966, when the President of the high priesthood, David O. McKay apostatized and set up a graven image of Lucifer in downtown SLC. It has been downhill for the nation and the church ever since. Now I will tell you this, it maybe that in this election, we will save our constitution and restore our economy, but if the leaders of the LDS do not get rid of their Idolatry, and if the people do not repent of the sins of abortion and pedophilia. The church and the nation will be destroyed and given over to other nations and the Lord will rise up a new church which will worship him in spirit and truth.

I love the reference of the Matrix...a great analogy that we get so involved in day to day hour to hour, that we forget we are here to be saved and save those around us once we have been saved. Those who have been warned are to warm their neighbor.

To the larger point being made: the Greek for Apostasy is apostasis. It was a military term and can best be defined as mutiny. The internal threat is always the primary concern.

As far as polygamy- I want to hear Connor Boyack, Don Bradley, Greg Madsen, Michelle Stone, and Jacob Hansen sit down and parse this out for a few hours. I personally think along the lines of Don Bradley for now- but this would be a great benefit for the listening public.

@@ruckin3 I don’t know as I agree with that. I got the vibe that Greg hasn’t studied the topic on the level those other individuals have. He invited on Michelle Stone, Brian Hales, and Jacob Hansen in order to learn and get opposing positions on the issue.
Hard to contend with people like Michelle who dedicates her life to studying this and additionally uses emotional arguments to support her claims.
Sure Greg could have done more to contend with Michelle’s arguments, but I’m more grateful he platformed both sides so we could hear their best arguments. I love freedom of speech, debate, and airing out the truth.
I didn’t need Greg in order to conclude that Michelle lacked sources and concrete evidence. She mostly used an appeal to emotion. She feels extremely passionate about the subject and jumps through hoops to prove her position. Clear cut example of confirmation bias. I didn’t get any solid evidence from her arguments. Greg helped bring both positions to light which is what I think the read goal was.

This is what I have come to know...
That God doesn't need our hamster wheel efforts on the white knuckle covenant path. God doesn't need endless outward ordinances...
He requires one thing... your heart willing to submit to His love.
The love of God comes to the seeker of God like a kingdom within. The outpouring of grace and love that our being offer to anyone willing to accept His Sonship is better than we've been told.
It transcends all church activity and religious rites because receiving this mighty gift of being begotten by His love is the thing ALL religious activities point to.
The church often forgets this. All religion forget this. When we begin to worship the "true church", the temple, or our leaders, then we begin to become
Eand become like Zoramites. We are to be the holy habitation of God. We are to receive his love. We are to partake of it and be transformed by it and then become seed spreaders of the same seed of love which was planted in us when He first loved us.
Come out of the vanity and unbelief of religious confines and constraints and accept the actual Gidtnof the Holy Ghost and LIVE!
