This is perfect timing to me. As a convert, I knew more about Joseph Smith but only a few things about Brigham Young. The most I could make of him was that he was a very complicated but good man. This morning, I prayed to God to ask why Brigham Young was chosen as Joseph Smith’s successor as the prophet of Jesus Christ. I wish to continue to learn more about him so that I can see God’s love and will for Brigham Young as his mouthpiece.
Look into polygamy. Study all resources regarding church history, not just the ones the missionaries gave to you. If they tell you not to look at it, question the reasons why they would manipulate you to do so. God wouldn’t hid information from you, would he? God wouldn’t need to be ashamed of the actions of his former prophets right? Ask God about polygamy, but also think about it critically and if it aligns with your personal values.
@@carlislefindlay1834A Good question for all christians is why some of the most "famous" prophets in the bible had a few wives? (Jacob, David, Moses, Abraham, etc). All were respected and written about. Has any Christian (before the time of Mormons) had issues with these things? (or did the LDS religion make it more to the forefront)? Just curious. (I look at the polygamy thing - as more of a survival mechanism - of families coming together and a thing of the time (like the bible) than anything else.
@ I was already aware of polygamy and actually brought up to the missionaries that taught me. They were gracious and kind enough to address it seriously with me. Polygamy doesn’t phase me as much as I thought it would. I wouldn’t actively campaign to bring it back nor would I shame anyone for having a more positive view of it from a historical tie to it. If you think that bringing this up with me is gonna shatter my faith and testimony in the Restored Gospel as a convert, you’re sorely mistaken. If anything, the only one who’s acting like a brainwashed cult member is you for believing negative things about Latter-day Saints from antagonists instead of actually talking to members. I’m gonna ask you to repent of your anti-Mormon crusade against Latter-day Saints and grow closer to Jesus Christ.
I was a member. Technically I still am. I was born in the church. I still remember the night I finished reading the Book of Mormon for the first time in jr high. I remember the “Holy Ghost” affirming to me its truth. I graduated 4 years of seminary. I went on a full 2 year mission. I was an AP on my mission, and baptized about 8 people. Afterward, I was a regular temple attendee and had several callings. I’ve paid thousands in tithing. In total, I’ve read the Book of Mormon a dozen times at least. I very rigorously studied and LIVED mormonism.
I would encourage you to do what makes you happiest. However, I did not go looking into “anti-Mormon” material. I was simply studying the history of the church. The history of Joseph Smith. Those actions led me to serious realities that did not align with my values. Cognitive dissonance is the term.
I can assure you, you do not know the full history about polygamy if it doesn’t bother you. Nor do you know the full history of Joseph Smith or how the Book of Mormon was “translated”. I encourage you to stay curious, and to seek answers from all sources, not just the ones provided to you from the church. Don’t rely on feelings that come from a Holy Ghost. There is a phenomenon called elevation emotion. It is a psychological state in which we feel powerful positive emotions when we are doing something we believe, or have been told, is right. That is why every religion can claim they have found answers from god that their church is the TRUE church. And they aren’t lying, they actually believe it is.
But if mormonism gives you what you seek, I’m happy you found it. For me it controlled every aspect of my life. It demanded perfection out of me, but never gave me the promised blessings it promised. And then when I found out the very thing that demanded perfection from me had not been honest with me, I could not stay. The Mormon church is not true. I know it isnt. It’s a hoax, a lie, a con. Just like I am certain Jesus Christ is not the savior of the world. There is no devil. Something I don’t know, is if there is a God. I hope there is, but there is very little evidence supporting the existence of God. However if God exists, I hope that he isn’t anything like the God of Mormonism. I’d rather go to hell.
I admire your conviction. However I do not need to repent of anything. I repented and asked for Jesus’s atonement to work for me for 3 decades. Only to find that the love I actually needed was my own.
I wish you the best.
My previous comment was deleted but I admire your conviction. I remember feeling the same way about the “restored gospel”. Yes, the first time I prayed about the book of Mormon was when I was 14. I wanted a Joseph Smith experience of my own. So I read the entire Book of Mormon over about 7 months and prayed about it. The Holy Ghost told me it was true.
Later, I went on a full two year mission to California and baptized about 8 people I can remember. I was an assistant to the president, a zone leader, a district leader. I taught many people just like you, and bore testimony that this was the true church and I knew it.
It make me smile, because you made a comment basically assuming that I thought you or LDS members are brainwashed cult members. I don’t think you are being a convert. However, I definitely was at one time. I was completely committed to and believed with “every fiber of my being” that this church was true. In a way I envy your nuanced perspective.
If the church brings you happiness, I would encourage you to stay. But my experience in the church was ultimately not one of happiness. The promised blessings for obedience never came. I wanted to know more and I sought for answers. And nothing in my entire life hurt more than learning that the church had omitted significant history about Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and many other topics. I came to the conclusion that despite how I felt about the church, the facts just did not support its truth claims. And what I knew, was truly just emotion all along.
I wish you the best!
When I've walked 1,300 miles across dangerous wilderness, setup a city in a salted desert wasteland, and built an empire across half a continent I'll be ready and prepared to criticize Brigham Young.
Wise words
Also that desert gets stupidly cold for half the year, and absurdly hot for the other half, to where the salt in the desert turns into a sticky goo.
It's a miracle anyone was able to inhabit salt lake 😂
Well put! It's easy to criticize historic heroes who are long dead. Easy.
Across half a continent?? Utah is just one state.
Brigham Young directed the settlements from Alberta Canada to San Bernardino to Chihuahua Mexico. Mormons even founded Las Vegas.
I confess that I haven’t yet dig much on his history as I did for Joseph so I’m so glad for this video! Just a couple of months ago in a discussion about him, someone was making a case for the weird things he did or said and I stated that I believe the Lord would never let a wicked man lead his church and that I was sure that he was being misconceived just as Joseph widely is and that I’m sure he was a great man. As I defended him as I could with such little knowledge, the spirit hit so strong (what I was not expecting at all) that what I just said was true. I treasure this small experience. Thank you Jacob!
You lied for the lord and then felt it was the right thing to do? Amazing
@@grantbeck9228 ad hominem argument, very smart!
@@grantbeck9228you criticize for Satan and think it's the right thing to do? Amazing

Thank you, Jacob. I can’t tell you how much your videos and testimony have helped me build back my broken testimony. This video is super helpful. For many years, I consumed anti-Mormon content from places like Mormon stories, and other channels, and developed a very negative view Brigham Young. As I rebuild my testimony and it becomes stronger, these kind of stories help a lot to remind me, and everyone else on the goodness of our ancestors, and the influence they have had on our lives. Thank you for what you do.
May God bless you for your effort and your strong faith!
How easily we criticize those who came before us from behind the comforts of our computer screens and in the luxury of our homes, not having a clue of what the early settlers went through or why they did what they did. We have no idea what goes on behind the doors of our neighbors, let alone those who lived decades ago.
I can't tell you how much I agree with this comment!! I've been very frustrated lately because of this!!
That’s not the problem. Brigham young was a massive racist and wouldn’t have been a problem if the us gov didn’t do anything. Obviously they were a problem. You can’t deny Brighams racist rhetoric and was a massive polygamist. That’s who HE is.
Go search his speech to the president and the world about the African race. That’s “gods” words. That’s what you believe if you follow that prophet bc he was actually talking to god. You’re a nobody.
Exactly! And often it's criticizing their words without ever looking at their actions. Actions speak louder than words except for those who don't listen.
What good are we doing today with our actions?
Are you suggesting we DON'T criticize Mormonsters?
Gee, I should feel VERY BAD for SLAVE MASTERS huh?
Jacob, that was an incredible documentary on Brigham. I have defended him many times and will continue to do so. Thank you for your research and the time you spent putting this together.
If there was no Brigham Young there would be no Joseph Smith based church in Utah. The only major Joseph Smith based church would be the Community of Christ who seem to be moving away from what Joseph taught and are morphing more into a community focused feel good church. If you still believe in Joseph Smith and believe the church is to roll forth and fill the world, Brigham Young is an important piece in that process. The Utah church is only JS based church left doing that.
Community of Christ is now way more akin to progressive protestantism than anything resembling a sect of mormonism.
@@danielstark8356 It really is. I watched a service and it's worshiping the cloud god.
You can paint anyone as a demon or as a saint depending on what colors you choose to paint them with.
@ I'm not painting them, but painting what they worship with words of concrete description. I have not Idea how they are.
The common view of God is some Cloud or force, etc.
Take it easy.
@@clearstonewindows I was talking history in general, not the Community of Christ or their current view on God. I’m all for accurate history but that tends to be rare. To be honest, I don’t know of any religion that doesn’t have some dirt in its wake. Bottom line, human beings are far from perfect.
Brigham Young was a man’s man. I’ve noticed none of his critics come close to his accomplishments. He had a backbone and charisma. If he had flaws, they only prove what it means to be a man and a prophet. Great video, Jacob.
Brigham Young = Trump in your mind. It’s hilarious. I bet you make excuses for both the same way. “Grab um by the pussy” right brother?

Dude, I love the quote you share at the end. Fantastic.
I learned a lot from this video. Thank you, Jacob! I appreciate the time you’ve spent on this.
The ego of people who think they could have done a significantly better job than BY is sad and amusing. Or do a better job than JS for that matter. Good summary of oft overlooked attributes of the man and prophet
It’s not a high bar to not lie to people to get money, sex, and power. I bet even you could clear it. Stop revering the worst of humanity
This timely for me to learn about the man Brigham. I’m working on a prominent building in downtown that once was directed by president young. It has been a humbling experience to see the craftsmanship along with the commitment of the tradesmen who did some incredible work and left the future care of the building to us today.
Thank you for sharing this! I grew up a member of the church thinking of Brigham Young as a great American hero, a prophet and pioneer who led my family to safety. I always knew he wasn't perfect. Like everyone else, he was a flawed human being. But I never realized some view him as an evil villain until my daughters, who have been deceived by the mists of darkness, started telling me garbage about him. The church could not have flourished like it has with someone so evil at its head. You know them by their fruits.
Great video Jacob! So needed!!!
Brigham was deeply flawed. He also had many great qualities. Most importantly,he held the keys of the Priesthood. All three can, and did, coexist. No one fact negates the others.
This is exactly what I expected from this video!
I love Brigham Young, he is one of my favorite Prophets. I can understand why he receives hate from the world but it baffles me when I see members who do not love this great man.
Do you believe a white person should be killed for marrying a black person? Baffling huh?
There is a greater number of LDS folks that believe Smith did not practice polygamy and Young actually started the practice which they feel is not from God. I’m not LDS but that seems to be the growing trend amongst my LDS friends.
@ No offense but the LDS people you associate with are probably more liberal. It is a trend I have seen a lot of lately and it saddens me. I am often reminded that the in the story of the Ten Virgins in which the virgins represent the church that only half of them are recognized by Christ insinuating that there will a division in the church itself which I clearly see happening in Christian churches today.
@ maybe it’s a growing trend among LDS members trying to come to grips with our revered prophet having secret child brides. But it absolutely happened. We have written evidence. I don’t care that Mormons wanna shift blame to Brigham young so they can still sing praises to Joseph smith. They are fooling themselves
@@Zeett09 It's now a fringe belief by fringe groups. The church itself acknowledges Smith's polygamy.
l love Brigham. He was just as much of a prophet as Joseph and exactly who the Lord needed at the time. In many ways, Joseph was the architect and Brigham the builder. In the past as well as today, the inability to accept both as prophets inevitably sifts out the apostates from the Church.
I hope people 200 years in the future give us more grace than we give those in our past. We also are a product of our time. If we are not careful, Brigham and his generation will fair much better in the balances than we will.
No, you will still be an asshole 200 years from now too
We don't deserve it though.
I appreciate what you have done here by trying to show Brigham Youngs character. I think I have 1 issue of what you said, Brigham didn't "save" the church. Our Father and Heaven did. He used Brigham as a tool to do his work.
Well said!
Fair enough, but I believe we start splitting hairs too often.
Either no one gets credit for anything as they follow God's direction, or we do get credit for our obedience as God works through us. God had a hand in the lives of possibly every single person who did anything great throughout history.
At some point, it is okay to use the names of the people who were instruments and move on.
@@NoelFallstrom Even our Savior when someone said "Good Man" to him said, noone is good but the Father. I don't think that is splitting hairs. That is trying to be exact in glorying our Father and learning to become more Celestial. Words have meaning. Even our Savior Jesus Christ said that he only said what the Father told him to say.
@@NoelFallstrom no, you must give God all the credit when you accomplish something worthy of praise. And then take all the blame when you make a mistake. This is what any loving father in heaven would want. All the credit for his children’s good use of their free choice and agency. And then when they do something wrong, they must feel guilt, shame and self loathing. Someone must be a Savior for you because you sinned. This savior will die for you and suffer for you, because you’re a bad person and you can only be a good person through Jesus. Why? Because reasons. There are laws of the universe. That’s the way it is. Have you heard of gravity. Yeah same deal. Don’t ask questions. Pay your tithing. The gospel is true!
@@carlislefindlay1834Didn't know John Delhin had an alt account lo
Also, the alternative to your lack of need for a Savior is that there is no sin, rveryone is justified in everything they do (including murder), and right and wrong is only determined by social standards (which are prone to change often)
We need God.
Hollywood used to make movies supportive of us. See the film, "Brigham Young" starring Vincent Price and Dean Jagger. Jagger later got baptized LDS in part because he was so impressed by his role as Young.
Vincent made a horrible Joseph. I remember that movie well
@kip2703 I thought Vincent did the best JS 😅
@aliceduren6542 🤣 I couldn't get past all the horror movies I knew him from, then to see him play Joseph and I was shocked at how young he was when he did it.
Charleton Heston played Brigham in a movie too. Can't remember the name.
. The Avenging Angel 1995
I've been fascinated by Brigham for years, and have read much about him. This is the Brigham I have come to know.
Similarly to B.F., my 5rh generation grandfather (Samuel Roskelley) who immigrated as a youth from England and arrived in Salt Lake destitute, having been robbed on the trail, was taken in by Brigham, given work and housing. Eventually he was sent to Saint George to learn the outfitting of the temple, the assigned to outfit the Logan temple where he saved a the recorder for over 20 years. Brigham saved and supported him. I would not be here but for Brigham''s actions.
thank you for sharing this!
"Aren’t we fortunate that we have in our leader, Brigham Young, a man of such gentleness and kindness and softness of speech? He doesn’t have the rough edges that Joseph used to have." - Daniel H. Wells
Haha 😂 Rough edges? He is nowhere close to the greatness of The prophet Joseph Smith.
@@KippChurch-z1dDaniel Wells knew Joseph Smith personally. Joseph was known for his rough edges so much that some saints felt Hyrum was more fitting of what they imagine a prophet being like in terms of decorum and appearance.
Joseph’s greatness was prophesied in 2 Nephi 3. Brigham’s was foreshadowed in Mosiah 11.
That quote is wild.
I think JS may have been more unpredictable in his methods and theology, while Brigham was bold, but more steady. Joseph also had a temper like every other man in the 19th century.
@@KippChurch-z1dQuick question for you: Do you believe Russell M Nelson is the correct successor to Joseph Smith?

I love this! Brigham Young was a great leader and a prophet of the Lord. I feel we need more people standing up for Brigham and his legacy because it was great. He helped save the Church following Joseph’s death and he built a new civilization out west, on land nobody wanted to use.
Thank you for the amazing work you do Jacob!
I have grown up in the North East and, to my memory, I have never heard a bad word about President Young. In all my 74 years, 54 being in the church, not much has hurt me more than to hear that there are members that have a low opinion of such a man. I am grateful that the Lord has revealed and that the church has published so much history in these past few years. May we all stay strong in the gospel until our Savior returns.
Amen. No ill speaking of the Lord's anointed.
After Brigham Young answered Joseph Smith’s public chastisement with the statement “what would you have me do?”, Joseph immediately went to Brigham Young and emotionally told Brigham that Brigham had passed the test.

Thank you for this post about Brigham Young. It’s wonderful to hear something good spoken about this prophet of God! I’ve heard about the show that casts Brigham Young in a bad light. I will not watch, read or do anything that keeps me from enjoying the love, peace and joy of having the Holy Ghost as my constant companion. Thank you!
That's like saying you only want to know the good things of Hitler. Grow up.
Love this about Brigham Young. Everyone loves to pile on him and portray him as a crazy religious zealot and tyrant. I’ve always loved Brigham Young and this gave me a deeper perspective of him. Thank you!

If it weren’t for Brigham Young I would not be here.
Neither would my wife. For that matter, I was just explaining to my Children how if the Book of Mormon didn't exist. How none of them would either as my wife and I would probably not exist at all and certainly would never had been married or lived in Utah haha. Crazy when we think about it like that and SHOULD lead us to a great appreciation and awe in God's design.
BY was like Moses: he introduced the divorcement decree because that’s what the people wanted at the time. But that was not the Lords intention for eternal marriage in the first place. This doesn’t mean Moses “spake as a man” or was not inspired; it just means the Lord uses practical and iterative leadership
You are doing some truly fantastic work, Jacob. I hope you live to be 100 and can maintain the strength and will to continue defending the faith exactly like you’re doing it. Thank you!
Brigham Young was a badass and an incredible leader. I hope one day to see an accurate docuseries or movie about his life. He was a very interesting man

Nice work Jacob. Brigham Young has been slandered as much as anyone with the exception of Joseph Smith by critics. It's so easy to criticize someone who's not around to defend themselves. How many could have done what he did. The entire intermountain West owes a great deal of thanks to his efforts.
Thank you for posting this!
I was blessed to see the film “Six Days in August” during the too short run in theaters. It thoughtfully portrays the succession crisis following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. Great pains were taken to flesh out the true history of the amazing and inspired leader we have in Brigham.
I love the story of Susa Young Gates, Brigham's daughter. She was an amazing woman and she had an amazing father! I love her stories about her dad
I love Brigham Young because he is one of the many good examples that Heavenly Father calls upon imperfect men for extraordinary tasks. I even named my first son after him. As a latter day saint, sometimes I personally feel extremely flawed compared to many in the church. My teenage years were riddled with sin and addictions. I was exposed to things most of the saints would never even imagine. Brigham Young reminds me that despite my vast imperfections, God still loves me and can use me for his work.

This was an interesting episode I wasn’t expecting to hear of Chief Wakara who was baptized in Manti city creek at the time my 5th great grandfather Welcome Chapman was serving as the Sanpete area president. Welcome was well acquainted with Wakara and had been an instrument in teaching members of his tribe. After Wakara’s death the brother of Wakara had a dream where Wakara had him pass a message to Welcome. Welcome was later called by Brigham Young to work on the Salt Lake Temple where Welcome labored 30 years cutting the stone.
Thank you for this. Well done.
How foolish we are to project our current culture on the past. Brigham Young was a prophet of God and accomplished amazing feats both physical and spiritual.
They (Joseph Smith, Brigham Young) were misogynists, charlatans, and liars. And those were their better qualities.
Also pedophiles, and child molesters.
About the natives, no one seems to remember Brigham saying that "..it is cheaper to feed them than to fight them."
He was such a good leader of men and had an excellent mind for organization.
Were he here today we would be colonizing the moon!
Great video. Brigham was around with Joseph and went through so many of the early struggles. I firmly believe that in some respects he was just as important in the restoration as Joseph. Joseph had his mission and completed it. Brigham had his and completed them.
Brigham Young was called of God by prophecy and the laying on of hands. He was, himself, a prophet of God in his time. Beyond that, and relating to the endless opinions of "haters," there is no instrument known to man that can measure my lack of concern/interest.
Thank you! And great video.
I have always felt that Brigham was the only one who get the saints to Utah. He was a unique and wonderful person!
One story I remember is that a woman came to Brigham, complaining that her husband told her to go to Hell. Brigham responded, "“Sister, don’t go, don’t go!”" He had a great sense of humor, as all men and women of God ought to have.
That quote at the end ‼️
Thank you for this episode, so people might get a truer look at a great man and leader. He has and always will have my admiration. He was a very good man! It's sad that scoffers wish to paint an undesirable picture of him as is being portrayed. Nothing new, but thank you for reading these accounts from those who barely knew the man and also from those who knew his kindness, strength and undying devotion to those he loved and served.
Love Brother Brigham! Not perfect no, but courageous and what insane faith!
Insane....you said it, Mormons are nutter than a squirrel turd

Fantastic overview of Brigham Young. I loved all the quotes from others and insight from people who knew Brigham who were not members of his faith, especially Native Americans. I'm sure it was not easy to make friends with them as a white man. By the way, your production value is amazing! Well done Jacob.
