    This is perfect timing to me. As a convert, I knew more about Joseph Smith but only a few things about Brigham Young. The most I could make of him was that he was a very complicated but good man. This morning, I prayed to God to ask why Brigham Young was chosen as Joseph Smith’s successor as the prophet of Jesus Christ. I wish to continue to learn more about him so that I can see God’s love and will for Brigham Young as his mouthpiece.

      Look into polygamy. Study all resources regarding church history, not just the ones the missionaries gave to you. If they tell you not to look at it, question the reasons why they would manipulate you to do so. God wouldn’t hid information from you, would he? God wouldn’t need to be ashamed of the actions of his former prophets right? Ask God about polygamy, but also think about it critically and if it aligns with your personal values.

      @@carlislefindlay1834A Good question for all christians is why some of the most "famous" prophets in the bible had a few wives? (Jacob, David, Moses, Abraham, etc). All were respected and written about. Has any Christian (before the time of Mormons) had issues with these things? (or did the LDS religion make it more to the forefront)? Just curious. (I look at the polygamy thing - as more of a survival mechanism - of families coming together and a thing of the time (like the bible) than anything else.

      @ I was already aware of polygamy and actually brought up to the missionaries that taught me. They were gracious and kind enough to address it seriously with me. Polygamy doesn’t phase me as much as I thought it would. I wouldn’t actively campaign to bring it back nor would I shame anyone for having a more positive view of it from a historical tie to it. If you think that bringing this up with me is gonna shatter my faith and testimony in the Restored Gospel as a convert, you’re sorely mistaken. If anything, the only one who’s acting like a brainwashed cult member is you for believing negative things about Latter-day Saints from antagonists instead of actually talking to members. I’m gonna ask you to repent of your anti-Mormon crusade against Latter-day Saints and grow closer to Jesus Christ.

      I was a member. Technically I still am. I was born in the church. I still remember the night I finished reading the Book of Mormon for the first time in jr high. I remember the “Holy Ghost” affirming to me its truth. I graduated 4 years of seminary. I went on a full 2 year mission. I was an AP on my mission, and baptized about 8 people. Afterward, I was a regular temple attendee and had several callings. I’ve paid thousands in tithing. In total, I’ve read the Book of Mormon a dozen times at least. I very rigorously studied and LIVED mormonism.
      I would encourage you to do what makes you happiest. However, I did not go looking into “anti-Mormon” material. I was simply studying the history of the church. The history of Joseph Smith. Those actions led me to serious realities that did not align with my values. Cognitive dissonance is the term.
      I can assure you, you do not know the full history about polygamy if it doesn’t bother you. Nor do you know the full history of Joseph Smith or how the Book of Mormon was “translated”. I encourage you to stay curious, and to seek answers from all sources, not just the ones provided to you from the church. Don’t rely on feelings that come from a Holy Ghost. There is a phenomenon called elevation emotion. It is a psychological state in which we feel powerful positive emotions when we are doing something we believe, or have been told, is right. That is why every religion can claim they have found answers from god that their church is the TRUE church. And they aren’t lying, they actually believe it is.
      But if mormonism gives you what you seek, I’m happy you found it. For me it controlled every aspect of my life. It demanded perfection out of me, but never gave me the promised blessings it promised. And then when I found out the very thing that demanded perfection from me had not been honest with me, I could not stay. The Mormon church is not true. I know it isnt. It’s a hoax, a lie, a con. Just like I am certain Jesus Christ is not the savior of the world. There is no devil. Something I don’t know, is if there is a God. I hope there is, but there is very little evidence supporting the existence of God. However if God exists, I hope that he isn’t anything like the God of Mormonism. I’d rather go to hell.
      I admire your conviction. However I do not need to repent of anything. I repented and asked for Jesus’s atonement to work for me for 3 decades. Only to find that the love I actually needed was my own.
      I wish you the best.

    • @carlislefindlay1834
      @carlislefindlay1834 11 дней назад +6

      My previous comment was deleted but I admire your conviction. I remember feeling the same way about the “restored gospel”. Yes, the first time I prayed about the book of Mormon was when I was 14. I wanted a Joseph Smith experience of my own. So I read the entire Book of Mormon over about 7 months and prayed about it. The Holy Ghost told me it was true.
      Later, I went on a full two year mission to California and baptized about 8 people I can remember. I was an assistant to the president, a zone leader, a district leader. I taught many people just like you, and bore testimony that this was the true church and I knew it.
      It make me smile, because you made a comment basically assuming that I thought you or LDS members are brainwashed cult members. I don’t think you are being a convert. However, I definitely was at one time. I was completely committed to and believed with “every fiber of my being” that this church was true. In a way I envy your nuanced perspective.
      If the church brings you happiness, I would encourage you to stay. But my experience in the church was ultimately not one of happiness. The promised blessings for obedience never came. I wanted to know more and I sought for answers. And nothing in my entire life hurt more than learning that the church had omitted significant history about Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, and many other topics. I came to the conclusion that despite how I felt about the church, the facts just did not support its truth claims. And what I knew, was truly just emotion all along.
      I wish you the best!

    I confess that I haven’t yet dig much on his history as I did for Joseph so I’m so glad for this video! Just a couple of months ago in a discussion about him, someone was making a case for the weird things he did or said and I stated that I believe the Lord would never let a wicked man lead his church and that I was sure that he was being misconceived just as Joseph widely is and that I’m sure he was a great man. As I defended him as I could with such little knowledge, the spirit hit so strong (what I was not expecting at all) that what I just said was true. I treasure this small experience. Thank you Jacob!

    If there was no Brigham Young there would be no Joseph Smith based church in Utah. The only major Joseph Smith based church would be the Community of Christ who seem to be moving away from what Joseph taught and are morphing more into a community focused feel good church. If you still believe in Joseph Smith and believe the church is to roll forth and fill the world, Brigham Young is an important piece in that process. I have grown up in the North East and, to my memory, I have never heard a bad word about President Young. In all my 74 years, 54 being in the church, not much has hurt me more than to hear that there are members that have a low opinion of such a man. I am grateful that the Lord has revealed and that the church has published so much history in these past few years. May we all stay strong in the gospel until our Savior returns.

    I love Brigham Young because he is one of the many good examples that Heavenly Father calls upon imperfect men for extraordinary tasks. I even named my first son after him. As a latter day saint, sometimes I personally feel extremely flawed compared to many in the church. My teenage years were riddled with sin and addictions. I was exposed to things most of the saints would never even imagine. Brigham Young reminds me that despite my vast imperfections, God still loves me and can use me for his work.
