Malfeasance is the best pvp handcannon in terms of versatility as it is viable for close, mid, but excels at long (scout and sniper) range. This means you could run whatever you'd like as a secondary without worry of having to make sure all your ranges are covered since Malf already does that (would recommend lightweight sidearm but it's really up to personal preference).

really underrated exotic IMO that people just dont think of is Collective Obligation. Spread the void poison...I mean love.
Being able to suppress, weaken and make enemies Volatile while simultaneously getting a 15% damage boost?
    Literally god tier.
Not to mention once you get UP and rolling, you have almost 0 downtime on that.
Oop one enemy left? "Hey team, don't kill this last add for a sec, I need to do something. I'll kill it when I'm ready and we can continue."
Apply all the debuffs as the timer ticks over, and then kill to get them all back on the gun for the next fight.
not to mention the amount of times that the suppress on it has saved my teammates from shriekers/turrets/big damage adds they didnt expect.
I've had people hear me say Collective Obligation and go "Don't you mean conditional finality? I dont think theres a gun called collective obligation..."

Try using Lumina with Chromatic Fire on an Arc Warlock. You get all the benefits of Lumina, team healing with a great damage buff, and a big ass blinding explosion on precision kills. It also generates ionic traces. I use it in GM's with flashbang grenades and the fragment that makes your arc grenades jolt. I'm constantly blinding targets, buffing allies, getting my abilities back from traces, and putting out decent dps.
My only gripe about Lumina is the tracking on the orbs you shoot out is kind of janky. I can have my crosshairs on someone, but if my other ally is even remotely in the direction I'm aiming and closer, it will take a 90 degree turn and hit them instead.
But it is still my favorite exotic hand cannon.

Precious Scars is my go-to for Grandmaster Nightfalls that I'm not confident in clearing. Health on every kill matching my subclass means that nearly every weapon except Kinetic is immediate regeneration. Get a kill, hide away for a moment to regen, and press the advantage if you have a few moments more of the restoration. It's safe, consistent enough to rely on, and the original effect of the extended overshield in GM content is underappreciated but still incredibly useful.
also, fyi for the titans on prismatic: the class item gets the restoration part of scars, it's a really solid pick for the builds not running knockout

Dawn Chorus with any incandescent weapon and solar melee. Is especially good on solar warlock because there is the fragment that give you incresed class ability regen on scorching targets so you can have hellion up literally 100% of the time. The fact that it also gives melee regen on top of 200% increased scorch damage is cracked. You can also completely ignore dawnblade for damage since song of flame exists. Also the scorch damage includes incandescent scorch as well. So ANY weapon with scorch on it, dragons breath and skyburners oath for example get really nice damage increases. Also solar lock has on demand radiant with melee so with that melee regen from scorching targets you basically have radiant up 24/7 as well. Definitely goated exotic.

Dawn chorus has been glued to my head since solar 3.0 came out. Scorch damage evaporates ads, especially with an incandescent weapon, gives tons of melee energy, and it gives me an excuse to run daybreak in pve, because a dragon's breath shot and 10 flaming sword beam combo is nothing to scoff at.

Legitimately, Lumina is one of my favorite exotics. It satisfies the space cowboy aesthetic for me, while still being insane for support AND damage. And honestly, it's getting a chance to shine this season with the artifact perks. The kinetic weapon and overload handcannon make it an easy go-to for ANY content grind.

I shall give you three exotic weapons that I use regularly, and one armor piece for each class.
Tommy's match book. On the rare occasion I play titan it's a ton of fun. You just have to ignore the lack of shield when using it. On other classes it's still fun.
Polaris lance. Because I need more explosions in my life, and this puts explosions way over there.
And ruinous effigy. I started to love this back in witch queen when I decided to dunk the orb in savathun's basket ball net of a crown.
As for armor, Bombardiers for hunter, because melee enemies. The stag for warlock, because I can't be bothered by something like taking damage. And hallowfire heart for titan because there can always be more fire.

I had no idea about Lumina until I spent a Cypher to unlock it from the Monument & started using it. It was the only one with up to date light level wise & i needed a kinetic HC. I was shocked at how insanely great it was! Mind you, I've been a D2 player since vanilla days.
I'm glad to see this weapon get a nice spotlight

Deathbringer and Wicked Implement, my beloveds. Deathbringer gets a lot of strange looks because they don’t know where to get it or “wow it’s so difficult to use” when it’s honestly not is staggering. It’s really fun to use in crucible across open maps and seeing the kills pop up like five seconds later lol. Wicked Implement is just fun for me, plus I love the aesthetic.

If we could get some kind of self healing on Lumina (special reload 3 Noble rounds = Cure x2, all 6 = Restoration x1) I would never take it off. Some kind of way to use Noble Rounds as a solo player would be really awesome.
As far as underrated exotics, Mothkeepers Wraps on Prismatic Hunter. Got me through solo legend campaign, I can handle 2 out of 3 champion types, and I can keep a high uptime on things like Gunpowder Gamble & Stylish Executioner. Overshields are great for team & solo play giving you that health bump that you need to get back to cover as well.

On weeks where arc and stasis are the weekly burns I will use a Vesper of Radius/Stasis Warlock build.
    Duskfield Nades
Frostpulse (as this will freeze everything and then Vesper will kill it instantly and for the enemies left behind your class ability will fill super fast)
Iceflare Bolts (most enemies will freeze twice from Frostpulse and then subsequent spawn seekers)
Whisper of Refraction (it makes getting your class ability back even faster)
    Whisper of Fractures
    Whisper of Rending
    Whisper of Torment
This build works insanely well with a glaive/sword as the more enemies you can get surrounded by the faster you can cast your class ability. I tend to use a primary weapon with Kinetic Tremors since frozen targets take more damage.
    Mods :
    Helmet - Dynamo and Siphon
Gauntlets - Bolstering Det × 2 and Loader (if running glaive)
    Chest - Resistance Mods
Leg - Arc Surge and Insulation × 2
Bond - Reaper, Bomber, and Powerful Attraction
This build is so much fun to play. I hope somebody gives it a try.

Lumina was my reason to play the game. I earned 10k PVP Kills on it. It can instantly heal someone to full, even bouncing it around corners to get them from cover. The damage buff stacks with kill clip so you can melt people with a side arm if they get close. Plus solid 140 hand cannon. I may have retired from the game but if someone ever wants to be a god tier healer, this gun is the best for it. Boots of the assembler required but it's been my favorite build of all time. I remember back in the day Orewings Maul + Proxmity Grenades used to one shot with the blessing of the sky buff.

the thing you said about any exotic we love but think is underappreciated. Touch of Malice, I have 28k pve kills and 3600 pvp love the gun and it is an add clear monster as well as an orb making machine it can blind enemies which also means unstop stun built in even without artifact radiant makes it anti barrier and its damage overall is amazing. now yeah it does hurt you but slap on a warlock with devour, titan with loreley or resto nades armamentarium, and a hunter with healing nades or something along those lines and you have amazing add clear great damage stun potential and a fun time. my fave exotic and havent stopped loving it since i finally got it to drop after 52 fresh clears (before they added it to the weekly rotational raid thing lol)

Ive always been a huge support healer type of guy, so when they added rifts into warlocks kits in d2 i was so happy, then Attunement of Benevolence happened, then lumina and assembler boots happened. However this new auto rifle keeps people alive much better and extremely consistent. I know lumina give an insane damage buff but thats never been my priority. I wish the boots were better, they got extremely powercrept by the helmet, of course its nice to have a healing rift uptime thats longer. I just realized i can theoretically run lumina and No Hesi together. I didnt even watch the video yet but thanks for making me think on this a bit more lol.

My answer would be Final Warning. That little water gun does so much damage and has so much utility that I like to think that it is a watergun filled with highly corrosive acid instead of water.
Great for general play and once you get better in the game a powerhouse in endgame.
Even DPS it's really up there (in terms of primaries but still).
Also most fun to learn as it takes a while to get that right feel of the gun, the moment when it just clicks
Also sect of force is one of my favs in gms, to nuke champs quickly
But Lumina is definetly one up there. In raids I am THE Lumina guy, I love running it

Deathbringer is my favorite underrated exotic. It clears all the adds for you in seconds very effortlessly and efficiently in a single rocket, then you can use the rest of your ammo to nuke champions by hitting them with every projectile. It's so versatile. People don't give it a chance because it's just mildly less convenient to use than Gjally, but I think the payoff for learning to use it is totally worth it.

Alpha lupi is actually my underrated choice. I use it on my main solar titan build.
Hear me out: with Searing on solar 3.0 and hip firing skyburners oath on anything, you can chain drop barricades for rapid healing to anyone. And because your activating your class ability, you can chain activate mods like bomber/reaper/dynamo to get all of their effects.
Now, what would happen if Alpha lupi got buffed so that the healing pulse was cure instead? It would then work with Benevolence to speed up the recharge of all your abilities, including the barricade. Meaning even faster ability chaining.
I use this as a really effective support build that still packs a pretty solid punch (Consecration). And this is with AL as it currently is. I'm basically waiting for the exotic to get this buff and then I'll have one hell of an aggressive healer build at my disposal.

Lumina my Beloved. It was actually the first exotic I grabbed out of the Monument in D2. Still don't regret that choice.
Also weird but not entirely off-meta support exotic: Starfire Protocol. Infinite rift energy can give you a lot of team healing, and can lead to dropping rifts on everyone on the team while Ember of benevolence keeps up Fusion Grenade recharge time. Is it worse than Verity's brow? Probably. Is infinite Pheonix Dives for free team healing and hellions fun as hell? Yes.

I think outbreak is one of the best exotics, a lot of my friends who started destiny on may struggled getting good builds and exotics since a lot of the mods were locked and they didnt have almost any exotic, once we ran through zero hour mission they got it and omg, they started to really love the game, yes some of them had graviton lance and sunshot, but they always struggled with bosses miniboses and just overall trying to do legend missions on the campaing was so scary for them, once they got outbreak it felt like they had finally stood up for the first time, they ran raids (vog, kf, vow) and they started to not fear legend onsaught anymore, the only enemy they would struggle with is tormentors and some champions but overall they gained confidence, one of those players didnt even have a build and couldnt make one since he kept getting the same exotic pieces from the engrams (foetracer, geminy gester, and stompees) and he didnt have all the mods, but outbreak allowed him to understand how damage stacking worked, he started trying to make outbreak more potent and got into orb generating mods, surges, he found time dialation and started grinding to unlock those mods, he did so many raids without proper builds and stats, with blue gear and outbreak, and still managed to get more kills when he was given adclear and not die on mechanics. Outbreak is truly a blessing, to this day they still always carry outbreak with them and they use it on gm nightfalls, raids and just overall since its just the best exotic to get value with, it might not be as flashy as other exotics or potent but when a team runs more than one outbreak, you can tell how it makes the encounter less daunting for any player who struggles playing the game.
I am very proud of my friend group btw, they got into destiny and since then they have really really loved the game, they are also not the type of players to look at destiny content so they are relatively not influenced by doomer content, they have opened my eyes since on how amazing destiny really is and how ive been just not looking at simple things this game does that no other game does. a lot of them come from games like call of duty zombies, overwatch, apex, warframe. they are 8 players, 4 of them have the new dlc and the others were able to get the old dlcs with psplus, some time in the future they will get the new final shape since rn everyday they still play. they wanna grind, a lot of them have done gm nightfalls, and none have attempted master raids yet but we are getting there. some of them have builds now and they make their own builds, they have sparked that joy i get when i play destiny, they really did.
(edit): I USED LUMINA!!! to help them in legend campaing with bosses and verity for healing nades (then they introduced the autorifle that heals so that helped) I do use lumina often since it does makes raids where dps is almost there just easy.

Been a massive fan of lumina for years. It's been slept on forever in both PvE and PvP. I know high end PvE players use it but outside of that it's a rare sight. But in PvP it has decent range, insanely high aim assist that you feel on MnK and it feels good. The hardest part about lumina is using the perk and understanding when you can or can't hipfire. The way I use it is once I get the noble rounds I spend 1 immediately and then head towards red on the radar and then shoot the second round towards an ally, even if there isn't one, when I'm in range of the opponent.

It's not really all that out-of-pocket, but Ager's Scepter is a trash mob murder machine that has extra subclass synergy and Champion deterrent built-in, especially with the catalyst. It's not fantastic for single-target DPS (though by no means terrible either, in my experience), but it beats almost any other individual weapon for crowd control and damage-chaining potential what with the Shatter damage chain reactions you can get going in target-rich environments. I don't really see it out in the wild all that much, but every time I pull it out for myself I'm reminded of how fun it is to use in a lot of PVE situations.

i feel like chromatic fire is very often underappreciated as an exotic that can both help feed into loops and weaken/sever entire crowds of enemies with a single precision kill
i pair it with ace of spades and a void super very often, firefly + the weaken aoe = everything is either dead or it's easier for my teammates to finish off
going for a strand super allows you to effectively give your teammates 40% damage resistance against a crowd of enemies for simply just killing one of them
a solar super gives a moderate amount of scorch, 15 stacks i believe, but unless you really want the shiny orange/yellow kaboomies it won't make much a difference

My personal favorite exotic is Wicked Implement. And the reason why is pretty simple - you can use it to deal with overload AND unstops AT THE SAME TIME, without any artefact mod! And if there is a anti-barrier scout - damn, this beast is a swiss knife against champs.
Another cool part about it - self-feeding shards from nowhere, which might be used for extra synergy with Stasis, Prismatic, or just dunk Elemental Charge mod and you'll feed yourself for an extra armor charge from every 4th shard, which, btw, floating towards you from any distance.
    I love this gun.

I used to main lumina with a solar support warlock, but Red Death Reformed synergies better. It definitely has more of a focus on keeping the whole fireteam alive rather than boosting our damage, but when we’re facing the final boss of a 50 round onslaught, making the whole fireteam near unkillable with healing turrets and catalyst boosted Red Death ends up counting for more than +35% damage. It would be different if I was raiding. Then lumina would probably be better.

Vexcaliber is my usual go-to for any dungeon crawls or lfg/Sherpa shenanigans. Good burst damage and whether I'm a devour-lock or radiant well with heals, it's all about survivability. I can bump up my allies but more importantly I can pull out clutches to revive them.
