Why do Guitarists INSIST on Getting this WRONG?

- Guitar players: They're shred lords! That is, until they plug in a recording interface and attempt to record themselves, then suddenly, they become bumbling morons!! Blackstar might have just fixed an extremely common and seriously annoying problem. No more Excuses!
Disclosure: Blackstar sent me the interface, I didn't get paid, and I'm not keeping it.

About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!
You went to see Stevie T, and you didn't even kick his ass? What the hell dude? You promised us.
“Asking a guitarist to press record is like asking them to solve quantum physics” false, because physicist recognize they don’t know jack shit!
Stevie T is the Line Six Spider of music youtubers.

as the guy who actually gets laid i mean bassist it was refreshing to hear you go after the correct targets. my self esteem took its habitual dive with your initial comment but was restored when you put those no-metronome-practice treble types in their rightful place
I feel seen, finally! 🤣🤣 "no-metronome-practice treble" lol
I joined a Facebook metal fans group and litteraly the first post i saw was the creator of the group saying that he kick a female guitar player from the group because she covered a Sleep token song. That it wasn't metal, but crappy R&B with metal aesthetics to try to take our money. He even posted a picture of her. And many people supported him. Like...dafck ?!
Those same guys are still virgins at 45 😂

A great, original and really funny comeback.
Some people don't understand that art is constantly evolving. I'm sure they're also complaining that new Iron Maiden albums don't sound like 40 years ago.

There’s a problem, here’s a solution, NOT LIKE THAT GLENN.
If only Death Magnetic had this tool.
😂
Even though the clipping we hear on Death Magnetic was introduced in the mastering stage (Look up the Guitar Hero : Metallica unmastered tracks), the comment was funny :).
Are you calling Glenn a tool? ik ik
It really wouldn't make a difference 😂 such shit art
@@HardRocker47Those are the multi tracks, though. I would not be surprised if the stereo mixdown was pretty nuked, too.
Now that's what I call an add read. They have to be happy with you today Glen.
Everything’s a smoke machine if you try hard enough 😂
That’s a t-shirt
Everything is a smoke machine if you operate it wrong enough. I've had the pleasure of working with some real prodigies who turned machines into smoke machines without much effort at all.
get them a 32bit float interface for the direct sound and that's it
Removing the gain knob on the instrument input would've been the perfect solution for this "problem".
I feel attacked…. Because… these… go to 11
I have a line 6 spyder III and a BCRich warlock....😮💨....🤣😂
lol. I'll trade you for a ham sandwich.
Now you have to start a brutal death metal band. You can do it
I have _three_ Warlocks ^^
I have a Line 6 Spyder that a previous owner wrote over the name "5150" in black sharpie 💀
So, it's effectively a brick wall limiter built in? Don't we already have those in every DAW? Is the suggestion that guitarists will only not record too loud without a special 'don't play too loud' switch?
I’d guess that the enhancer is before conversion, so the converting it self doesn’t clip. If you apply limiter in your saw, you’re still clipping.
idk i think stuff like this, much like automatic headlights in cars, just trains people to not bother learning what they need to learn. so you end up with people driving without their lights at night even MORE often than before
No you don't, because the headlights come on automatically. No?
I was hoping ST could get through a gig without pulling a face, then eight seconds in……
Nice albatross
Wish I didn't walk into an ad. That fuzz tone of the limiter was a very nice sound.
Welcome to RUclips.
Not only that, it should work with the high notes of a soprano, of course you can use a compressor in the daw, but that doesn't prevent the original signal from clipping when they get those louds notes
Stevie T clips when he talks.
Oh shit, yup every guitar player @1:45 when they recording their crap every time 🤣
I'm just a home shredder (beginner) but I've learned so much from you.
Thank you for making these videos.
(I hope this comment makes into a video)
1:23 being a professional bassist for 30+ years, i am beginning to dislike very much the repeated cutting by you, sir... after all.. EVERY band i have ever been in relied on my ability to play bass competently, sing well, mix the band from stage right, mix monitors at the same time and do promotions... AS WELL AS it was my P.A., my van and my place they rehearsed!! how could i do MORE!>?!?!
You forgot to add "Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk." 5/10.
It's not your fault you are a bass player
You’re still the bass player.
I hate when brands go for switches that say "enhance" or "4K". Yeah, that's not what they do. Just call it autogain or limit
The SSL 2 and evolutions and their 4K button? Far from being any sort of autogain, it's a filter supposed to emulate somehow the input channel of the SSL 4000 console, and it's actually gainier (you need to compensate). I quite like it for speech, and it can do interesting things on other sources.
The enhance switch looks like a cool feature, but what if we just turn down the gain on the Scarlett until the red light stops showing up? Doesn't that do the same thing?
dedicated power will give it more headroom - i'd take that any day over bus powered
Labeling the switch 'enhance' is a genius move. It's going to make your typical guitarist think it's a boost or something so they are all going to toggle it on.
The Audient Evo series has something similar, only it sets the gain automatically based upon input level, still cool to see BS branching out :-)
Get em Glenn!
And keyboardists/pianists: typically pretty damn skilled, but good luck either:
A. Finding them to begin with;
B. Stopping synth lovers fiddling with their knobs, or;
C. Getting the bassist, who doubles on the keys, to work out public transportation (as you accurately noted)
That would be an Interface that I would recommend to guitarists who want record their own tracks. But in my studio, I have a wood paddle on my desk if they reach for my interface.
The rubber-face kid with "anxiety"... oh joy.
Man I ffing live those emojis, how do i get them ? 🤣
I struggle dialing my input gain in properly. If I have to record something that uses higher pitches they often get drowned out unless the lower notes start clipping. This would make life infinitely less cumbersome!
Could you never do a video with Steve ever again?
as a guitar player who recently bought a focusrite recording interface, i can confirm. my eye kju points dropped by 50.
Sweet trick! Now get my lead singer to stop getting closer to the mic and screaming a random times in the song.🤣
Buy a 12 dollar spit guard and install it before he shows up. Tell him all the pros do it and people will be super impressed. Get some random chick to say how sexy it makes him look. After playing the first song, look around at your bandmates and ask, "Why do the vocals sound so damn GOOD with that simple screen ??"
@@RandysRides 🤣
Neat little device, but for an interface solely marketed towards guitar and bass players the lack of a dedicated reamping solution is a dealbreaker. At least for that price.
As a musician (guitarist, bassist, synth player and vocalist), I can confirm that the vast majority of other musicians are arrogant dolts. I'm one of the rare guitarists that actually pays attention to Glenn's wisdom (and also personally know an excellent producer who I have had a ton of coaching from). This is why I rarely ever work with anyone else. 90% of collab attempts I've tried have been dismal failures due to the incompetence of other musicians.
I swear, if guitarists would just learn production skills, they'd fix their shit from the start. I think that's the major issue with most guitarists. They just want to shred and don't care about anything else. Learning production is not only super useful for making music, it saves a fortune, AND makes your music sound awesome.
I mean honestly, even with a simple Focusrite interface, it clearly indicates when your input is too loud. I don't know how anyone can fuck that up. It should be glowing green, maybe hitting yellow sometimes during intense volumes. If it hits the red, you've fucked up. It's so damn simple. If you use the Scarlett Solo right, it's absolutely fine, but I'd certainly love to try this one in the video!
Blackstar is an amazing company. Glad to see they are working to overcome the stupidity of us musicians.
It really should be a default on all audio interfaces, not me relying on my guitare volume knob staying in place to not clip.
This reminds me alot of a post I stumbled across from the late naughties from a grizzled veteran audio engineer who referred to the guitarist as a “zombie twank “
Amazing advice for micing cabs though. But, with Glenn, you don’t need to hunt the internets anymore, you get the cheekiness and great advice right here
Glenn, that was f*cking great! 🤣 I haven't laughed that hard for a while! Thank you🤘
Glad you liked it!
🔥 this has been stewing in your brain for a long time, Glenn. I love the intro.
erm why are you turning the gain up at all?! hasn't this issue been done to death and the understanding is that you leave the gain knob at 0 as you're just pre-amping your guitar into a virtual pre-amp/amp in your guitar plugin of choice and ruining every single plugin preset by being far too hot
So you’re supposed to click the icon with a white star in order to install the Blackstar software. That seems confusing even if you have never played a bass.
Hmmmm...spend $200US or turn the volume knob down a bit? Hmmmmm.......
I had to drive our bassist to practise for years and he still managed to flake half the time 🤦♂️
If only Glen had attached training wheels to the interface.
Isn't "chainsaw farting through a distortion pedal" exactly the sound you should be going for?
Awesome guest appearance. You and Stevie can get apoplectic like you're actual band mates
...but does it come with a tech to plug in my cable, the power, and set the thing up? It has Phantom Power, so I'm guessing the tech is a ghost. My D.I. box has Phantom Power too, but I guess that phantom is haunting someone else, because I've got to do all the work. Lazy ass spectres.
(this channel rules Glenn, thanks for all the great advice!)
ps: yes, I'm a bassist, how'd ya know?
I'm a guitar player who loves technology. I also love not paying out the ass.
Ok, so I'm advanced enough not to clip a guitar line input, not to stack cab impulses, and to mix guitars in the context of the whole song instead of soloing them. But I had a little break from metal music - like for 4 years while I was fighting pharmacologically with depression - now I'm getting back to guitar and songwriting, but I have a question - what about a guitar pedals? Like - I have a few really great ones, like Quantum Mystic from Black Art Toneworks, or Green Russian Big muff that hitted with Blues Driver BD-2 by Boss can generate face melting fuzz. Of course, while playing through an amp. Is there a way to capture the sound of the pedals without micing an amp? Right now, I'm living in a block of flats, so crankig up an amp isn't an option any more. I think that buying an amp modeler could be a solution - just hit the amp modeler with effects, and send it to audio interface, but I'm afraid that reasonable amp modoleres still aren't cheap.
If it's not an effect that depends on overloading the input, you can use your pedals. I have a very versatile chorus pedal I use to effect all kinds of sources, even post-recording.
I've also used a big muff running into an amp Sim bc the sim's fuzz sound was inadequate.
I run my pedalboard into my interface and then an amp sim. I’ve even found that a good amp sim will mimic overloading an amp (eg using a tube screamer as a boost) without clipping the signal on input as long as you have the input gain properly set (absolute minimum gain with “instrument” selected on my 2i2).
Is "enhance" like the "clip fix" tool in Audacity, that rounds off the flattened tops of clipped peaks, only in real-time? That's badass.
not sure that's what's happening, since this is a piece of HW, there might be a real time adjustment of input impedance... which is cool as well, more than the other, and more true to the source. (only a guess tho').
Great video Glenn. What a fantastic product (Blackstar) for musicians to use to enhance their garage jam, C60 cassette recordings like all of mine from the 80's and early 90's..😎😂🎸👍🏻
showing Steven Segal and saying guitarist has killer chops is sacrilegious worldwide -funny video and informing
and knowing is half the battle.
Hilariously good collaboration vid.
👍 for Lahey!
"everything is a smoke machine if you try hard enough"...truer words have never been spoken lol...as for recording? admittedly i started on analog and would hit the tape at +4 for the tape compression....switching to digital? that didn't work at all lol...my friend said "turn the knob until it peaks at yellow, if it turns red turn it down"...that seems to work ok
not all of us need all that to get a great guitar sound. if you know what your doing ,you dont need all that. I know I know. im just like whoever your speaking of. these gadgets is part of the reason everybody sounds like each other! lol! thanks glenn for the video. love your channel. you rock!!
Why can't the unboxing table even fit a large tv dinner? Didn't you have a glorious fancy new modular plastic one for a bit there?
Okay, Glenn, the Narazé Tedesco meme came to you, finally! Cheers from Brasil, man! (Yes, Brasil)
I wonder what the difference is between the Enhance button on that interface and the PAD button on my interface.
Just here to remind y'all to use a di box and check out what the -db pad does.

Maaaan... I can't even shred. Now what should I do? Play bass?

@lifespanofafry1534 damn. Sounds like a personal problem lol
As a somewhat reliable and competent bass player, I rather enjoy Glen dunking on us :)
Glen should be a self esteem therapist.
So im really considering buying this because I'm soon going to be going into the field of music production as a job and I'm trying to learn a lot before I hit college soon. From what I've read, what you meant by cutting the audio, doesn't that mean that you are getting rid of high end distortion off of the guitar tracks? And I'm assuming that this is harder to do post production rather than if you just did it pre production.
Glen is f'n hilarious. A total demi-god.
If only had I had this in 2002....
Glenn as a live sound guy holy shit do I hear you sometimes. Don't get me wrong, got a lot of friends in the scene, there are some great people out there. But sometimes its just like... Goddamnit.
It is true with a ton of guitarists. I have friends ive played in bands with, friends ive known for years, and most of them have no way to record guitars, because theyre old, and dont understand the technology
It’s crazy. The best little shredders ive ever known, and they stopped understanding how to record post Tascam 4-track!! Makes me crazy….
Im 57- ive been recording at home since 2006. I just wish some of my buddies would make the jump into the modern age for Fuck’s sake…
Dude, love the Albatross riff !!!
Do you seriously think that the average metal head won't be overwhelmed by this?
It's because their ego doesn't get out of the way of common sense.

It's a more interesting way of telling the story.
Felt the Steve cameo funny but could have been a bit more there. Either way enjoyable video.
Could you run the "fuzz" tracks through AP Mastering's Saturation Reverser? I'm curious to see how far the Enhance switch will go. (I'm also curious to see how a Volt 476 compares to the Blackstar. Guess it's time to finally buy one.)
Well I'm feeling left behind 🤘😎🤘
That tone was almost spot on! Shut up and take my money
My AI's 1-1/2 inputs are a source of frustration.
I need at least two for guitar DI and mic. At least one more if I'm recording voice at the same time to get the whole thing over with as quickly as possible.
I'm looking at Behringer or used gear because I'm cheap.
Holy s$!t this was a really funny and entertaining video! I love Blackstar and feel they are pretty underrated. I use their St. James plugin on guitar with Element Bass (obviously for Bass you goobers) for most of my recent demos and really love the sounds I am getting. Love and Chugs 🤘🔥🧡🔥🤘
LOOOL, the b.c. rich though.
How does this compare to IK's Axe I/O series? I get this has more inputs, but I like the guitar focused functions on IK's interfaces.
I resemble these remarks grumble grumble
So gain stage slightly lower than when you clip at peak level? I thought you said to record at -6db? This seems like a ridiculous and shameless ad which i didnt think was like you? GUYS ITS A PAD THATS CALLED ENHANCE INSTEAD!!!! YAYYYYYYY!!!!! wtf? Actually disappointing.
Now that's a click bait I can get behind!

So the enhance is just a limiter? Aren't you still losing your dynamics?
Which one of your editors got the jaboody dubs sound bite?
Hilarious, and the visuals. Great stuff.
Does a DI track really need to be that loud? I often just press the instrument button and nudge the preamp so the DI is taking up 40-50% of the wave form when playing hard. Never had problems ramping that way even though I do it by reversing a cheap ass thomann millennial DI box :')
