LG LW6017R 6,000 BTU Abysmal Air Conditioner

  • This is one of the most, if not the absolute most, abysmal air conditioners I've ever operated--the LG LW6017R 6,000 BTU "room air conditioner". I've never liked LG appliances, this one is no exception.
This is, like most appliances today, electronically controlled. Electronic controls are not my preference, but there are cases where they're at least designed well and provide a decent user experience. This control set is awful. Too many buttons, too many indicators, and too much delay! Several seconds pass before the machine executes the command entered.
The unit is loud. The controls are loud, the fan is loud, the compressor is loud, it's all too loud! What an awful impeller design for this application. Had they used a conventional squirrel-cage blower wheel, it would have been half as loud.
The unit is constructed almost entirely of plastic and Styrofoam, with nothing between the outside and inside besides one thin piece of foam. It's so thin you can see light through it.
R32 refrigerant? No thanks. What an awful refrigerant.
The unit ran and cooled (eventually), but it did so very poorly. This is a completely unsatisfactory air conditioner and likely won't last more than 1 or 2 seasons before something fails, most likely the coils.

I wish I had found your channel before I bought this. I did only pay just over 100 for it. I use it in my shed, so it does OK there. I can't believe this thing was made with Styrofoam. I have had it since 2018, and it still works, but I don't keep it on except when I need it for a few hours at a time. I did try it in a bedroom when I first bought it, but it was too loud! It did cool good, but it felt humid. Also you cannot seal it up to where bugs will not get in. Who the hell wants bugs?

    Good ac unit.
I have the exact same unit and its been 3 years and I have no issues. I'll save you all the trouble before blaming it on a lousy ac unit, which this is not. I'll take you from unboxing to enjoying a nice cold room in the summer. These steps apply for all window ac units, no matter if its 5,000 Btu or 14,0000 Btu.
Step 1. Make sure the window opening is big enough.
Step 2. Make sure your air conditioner is installed in such a way that its rear is tilted downward by 10mm (0.39in) to 15mm (0.59in) so that indoor condensed water can smoothly flow to the rear or else you'll get water inside your room.
Step 3. Seal the sides and bottom with foam weather seal so the hot air and bugs and insects from outside aren't getting through.
Step 4. Most likely there is a gap from the top of the ac unit and the top of the window frame if it is a horizontal sliding window like mine. So get a piece of wood or plexi glass and seal that gap.
Step 5. Plug in your air conditioner and enjoy.
    Now, maintenance.
Really simple, you need to check the filter at least every few days to make sure it's not dirty. The dirtier it is, the less efficient it becomes. If you don't want to check the filter that often then the ac unit has a light that lights up and stays on until you clean the filter. Then after you clean the filter you can reset that change filter button. At the end of the season you can take the ac out of the window and clean the inside of it and have it run like new for the next season. But only if you are confident and have the skills to do so. You need to maintain your unit or you'll be complaining like this guy who posted this ridiculous video. Everything I just told you is gonna be in the instruction manual. Just read it folks. This guy here who posted the video clearly didn't read the instructions for his.

It's not my machine, I didn't buy it, I didn't install it. These are just observations from seeing it run. Too loud, doesn't get that cold, poor interface on the controls, and like everything else today, simply not built to last more than a handful of seasons. I have air conditioners from the 1970s that still run, this won't last even 10 seasons. None of the ones made today will.

In the early 2000s when our central A/C burned out (it was undersized and really didn't work), we were in desperate need for air conditioning. We bought a few window units off of our neighbor who was buying up pallets from abandoned storage facilities. They air conditioner for my room was a brain dead, 6,000 BTU Kenmore (LG). The electronics were dead, so we just bypassed them. Eventually, I just had it run with a digital thermostat relay system. It occasionally did freeze up since it had nothing to monitor the coil temperature. After about 15 years, I replaced it with a new 8,000 BTU Frigidaire window unit with analog controls. Oklahoma summers can get pretty hot. The 6,000 BTU window unit still works. I just have it stored away for now. I'm not a big fan of digital because I'd rather operate them with external thermostats. The best way to do that is with an analog unit, but they are almost phased out.

    • @JordanU
      @JordanU  Год назад +1

Often times just detaching the thermostat from the coil and letting it hang a few inches out the front of the machine will make it completely accurate.

I really dislike any A/C with Energy Star as with the units I had with it would never cool well below 70. If the outside temp was below the room temp, the compressor would never come on. It gets very humid in my area so it’s normal to run the A/C when it’s in the 50s here. If the compressor did come on, it would freeze into a block of ice. That said, I would wake up in the middle of the night in a disgusting pool of sweat. Went vintage and never looked back!

I wish ours came with that black plug in the back. We have no way to let the water drain out of ours. It was bought like 4 years ago or so and it’s filling with water too quickly this year and you can hear the fan blades splashing it around. It wakes me up at night. Why wasn’t ours made with that same black plug to remove??? I see it on the back of the one you’re servicing but it’s supposed to be removed so the water can drain properly. So the person that owns that one would probably have better performance if it was removed for them. Just letting you know. Mine doesn’t have it nor is there one on the bottom that I can see. I just put like five lines of yarn to hang out the back and wick the water to drip out instead. Stupid set up with no drainage on my unit!!! 😢

LG makes these units really cheap, if you want quality from LG you'll need to go up to the 8000 btu. The GMCC rotary compressor is used in most air conditioners, or a Quingan compressor. Most new air conditioners are just Midea units with different styrofoam and a different front.

Midea A/C have the worst quality, e.g. defected thermostat, fan bearing easy to worn out, spilt A/C easy to leak refrigerant. I heard an Engineer from Johnson Controls said that a technican in Dubai has been killed during repair a York Spilt A/C, they didn't notice a Live wire has been shorted on the compressor discharge pipe and melted. When they switch on the power, the technican get shocked, that York spilt A/C also made by Midea. Gree A/C quality is better but need take a long time to cool down the room. It doesn’t drip out the back fast enough plus it’s rusting where it does drip back there. But it fills up too damn fast. My husband has to open the window and tip the damn thing sometimes just to get the water out. We definitely shouldn’t have to do that. I have had better success than you with LG window ACs. I also found that a 5000 btu was too small for Texas summers for the bedroom, and had to move up to an 8000 unit. One LG 18k BTU unit has been working fine, since 2015, and I recently got a another same size unit to replace another brand that died. I don't recall its maker and it is long gone from the curb, but it only lasted 30 plus years. In the summer I will check the filters once a month or so, and clean them when they get a bit dirty. LG performance seems to take a hit when they are clogged, but I had assumed that was true for all brands.
