Gary MacDonald's Norman Gunston is absolutely a national treasure and Sally Struthers is adorable in her genuine good-natured bewilderment at the situation she finds herself in.
This one is probably well remembered because of how much Struthers laughs and is a great sport about it. I was booked to tour the North West with Garry in 1978 and had dinner with him in Port Hedland. We talked about Norman, who was funny, brave and outrageous, and Garry spoke about the personal toll it took on him. Unfortunately, the next night in Karratha he was attempting to do his floorshow in front of teams celebrating netball and AFL grand final wins, and they were oblivious to him. It was the wrong crowd. Halfway through Delilah he stopped singing, shouted at the crowd and left the stage, never to return. By the time we finished the set, he was on his way back to Perth. A lovely man, unassuming, who could actually play blues harmonica unlike Norman's suck and blow. I was so happy he had further success with Mother and Son with the late Ruth Cracknell.
@@TheTruthKiwi Mind you it was over 40 years ago but something to the effect that they were rude and ignorant, which they were. It was sad because the night before at Port Hedland was huge with an audience eager to be entertained.

Okay, after watching this about ten times in a row, my favorite part must come @ 2:58 when Sally (who is finally hip to what's really going on here) can't control her mirth anymore and she goes "Norman, I love you." Then reaches over to give him a kiss. So funny, so cute, so sweet. A big triple yay!

Garry has to be up there with this Australia's best of the best. He is a living treasure. Who else does an interview with a packet of Bex in their pocket? I would vote for him as Australian of the year, dad of the year, pet of the year and car of the year, every year, not forgetting Gold Logie.
Garry never won a Logie i don't think, but I know for a fact that Norman did. (and yes i know Norman is a character, but the Gold Logie went to Norman not Garry)
@@scottdavey3804 Garry McDonald was also inducted into the Logie Awards Hall of Fame in 1997, and I still recall the end of his acceptance speech in which he defended the ABC: "Leave them alone, you big bullies! Extremely challenging to resurrect such an iconic character
@@mrmockatoo6786 that's a bit sad. What did he shout to the crowd?
@@TheTruthKiwi Mind you it was over 40 years ago but something to the effect that they were rude and ignorant, which they were. It was sad because the night before at Port Hedland was huge with an audience eager to be entertained.
One of Norman's best interviews. Most interviewees just didn't get it but Sally Struthers was absolutely delightful! :)
What a stroke of fortune...in this day and age it's great to come across classic Norman Gunston, and possibly his finest work.
Sally Struthers is a fine actor, and she gelled beautifully with Norman in this classic...!😂😂😂
Thanks for the upload 😁👍
At least Sally got the '' Aussie Sense Of Humour ''
Love Her
God bless them both. Always puts a smile on my face
2024 wish someone had told me about this sooner ! OMG! Classic , I am crying , her laugh is infectious: I love it !
Hadn't seen this for 10 years.norman Gunston, you bloody champion. Funniest interview of all time!
I never saw this fella before. Only second video in and I have a pain in stomach from laughing.
I have seen all the great comedians, Monty python, yes minister, robin Williams.
But that clip makes me laugh so hard my sides really hurt! Not joking, and she makes it work!
It should be in the national archives
It is, along with many other period TV clips.
Yeah, it really should.
That is incredibly funny. No doubt. I laugh everytime I see this.
Greatest interview ever. What a hoot!
How can I watch this after all these years and still find my self sliding to the floor in laughter. Its as fresh as if aired yesterday.
@@tassadar7945 not true.Gary won a logie for mother and son
@@tassadar7945 I think that was a lurgie that he caught no?
Car of the year. 😂 That's hilarious.
@@scottdavey3804 Garry McDonald was also inducted into the Logie Awards Hall of Fame in 1997, and I still recall the end of his acceptance speech in which he defended the ABC: "Leave them alone, you big bullies! I know they're a bunch of old fashioned, politically correct lefties, but stop taking their lunch money!". :-D
Of course, under normal circumstances, I wouldn't condone soapboxing of that nature, but because it was quite funny in the end, I'm happy to let that instance pass. :-)
What a gem - quire possibly his very best!
What a great laugh she has.
I love it, every time someone comments on this it brings me back to spill my guts in laughter.. lol...
whenever you feel a bit down, watch this interview. I agree. It never fails. you could not script this sort of thing.
It’s time to watch this interview again hereismuller
