@electricmariposa sorry to do a "achually", but there technically is if you count okamiden for Nintendo ds. Wouldn't be hard to emulate it either, but yeah I would adore a proper sequel, instead of a handheld game.
Your videos haven't been popping up for me until recently. I've missed them, but now it's time to add even more to my backlog haha. Looks like a great game! Thanks for covering these hidden gems!
I had an eye on Nine Sols and this one for a long time, a pity the first one is not on other platforms than PC yet. Can't wait for that on the Switch, and your review! I'll wait for the first discount for this one, the backlog needs a little pause, now that it's starting to form on the PS5 too 😅 Looks really good, I'll probably be playing it soon enough, I feel like playing something with this 2d hand drawn style. I reprised a little GRIS again, the trailer for their studio new entry (NEVA) made me nostalgic
I actually like the enemy designs. The static paper cutout design fits the Japanese theme. Just look at games like Okami or even Tinykin. It worked pretty well there.
I think my main issue with this game is the boss fights. I beat almost all of them on my first or second try, with a few exceptions. Some of them have a large arena and the attacks become easy to avoid, and it becomes a long resistance challenge where you have your moment to attack, then avoid enemy attacks, then second phase comes, and it repeats. I think my favourite could be the one against the big girl at the bridge (I don’t remember her name at all) because it had that escaping sequence at the start, which reminded me of Ori a lot, and it’s a shame it’s the only time they did something like that. The movement feels fantastic in this game and it made the platforming really enjoyable. Finished this game the other day anyway, it’s still really beautiful looking at the aestethic and listening to the soundtrack. I recommend thi while waiting for Silksong!
Played it until the first cave and felt in love with it. It just made me happy playing it. But I have to disagree with the "playing Hollow knight with only the stages that are required is relatively easy". I needed to Start over four times until I finally beat a required boss fight. It is just that hard😅
Played it the past few days. The visuals and audio just like the video says, are fantastic, the world is well constructed, you have an idea where you need to go, but you have the freedom to explore other areas too. The gameplay though has problems. Copying everything from Hollow Knight and Ori doesn't instantly make a good game. Weird hitboxes, a lot of unresponsive controls during combos (that maybe the Switch joycons), on few bosses the camera is WAAAAAY zoomed out so you can barely see your character amidst the projectile chaos (on handheld), some unbalanced platforming parts (like the one on the video, I raged more on this than on the Elden Ring DLC final boss) and unnecessary long boss fights. Having 3-4 (and more) phases doesn't make a difficult boss. It makes a boring one. Having to spend 10-12 minutes hitless just dodging with minimal attack windows, on the first phases to get to the one you died is just frustrating. Overall it's worth the price, you'll get a decent 10-15 hours out of it, but prepare yourslef for a few frustrating parts.
I put this on my wishlist the first time i saw the trailer, even if i m not into metoidvania. It looks like a piece of art. I had the same love struck w ori, a real work of art!❤❤❤
Really enjoyed this one. Beautiful world and solid gameplay and bosses. Hoping it does well because it’s games like this that show that titles don’t need to be these giant 100 hour beasts, but that shorter, tightly designed games have a lot of value. Also while I get the difficulty argument, I’m not gonna lie, I quite enjoyed the challenges and even wish some of the bosses were a bit trickier (maybe optional challenge rematches or something so the story isn’t too tough but more challenges are present).
I like the bullet-batting and directional jumping in Bo, as it reminds me of Ori 1-2 which has the same similar mechanic. However, Ori's bullet-batting and directional jump works in tandem and it makes a bullet-time effect, allowing players have time to aim where they want to return the bullet or use the bullet to bounce to a direction of choice. Meanwhile, Bo only has bullet-time effect with batting, while none for directional jump, which makes the platforming involving directional jump harder and less fun.
8 hours!? Based on how long it took me to get that bridge platforming and boss sequence done, I doubt I'll be getting through this that quick 😀 This game feels _great_ to play.
They took the voice inspiration straight from Tails of Iron😂 Btw I still can't wait for Tails of Iron 2 to come out! They already have a page for on the PlayStation store
Been keeping an eye on this awhile. Love the Okami aesthetic and Hollow Knight inspiration - both some of my fave games of all time! Thanks for getting this super quick review out! ❤
I backed this one years ago on Kickstarter and am happy to hear it being well-recieved. I'm not looking forward to the difficulty though, that's a risk you take investing in a game before it's made.
Ori movement is the best I’ve ever experienced. Team Cherry has described hornet as more acrobatic and floaty, and I hope so much, that just as much as ori wotw borrowed inspiration from hollow knight, I hope silksong borrows from wotw. If silksong is will of the wisp with hollow knight aesthetics, I will be so in love.
I bought Hollow Knight on their last sale, last month. Once I finish that one, this may be a good one to follow on with the genre. I enjoyed Ori 1 a lot.
Thought you slept on this one because it was not on the upcoming games for this week(it’s not on the eshop yet)! As a fan of japanese culture I’m 100% on this, been waiting for a while now! By the way, do you guys plan on joining the Gundam Breaker 4 Open Network Test this weekend? Hoping to hear your thoughts on that since I’m really looking forward to it, I’ve never played a Gundam Breaker game
You had me at Hollow knight type game with an Okami Japanese art style. This looks like something right op my alley. Sigh. I wish Vanillaware would put Masamune on Switch. Would really live to replay thst one
Looks really good but the camera is way too zoomed out for my liking. Just watching the trailer on the Eshop in handheld mode I can tell it'd be way too hard to keep track of the main character during combat/platforming. Ugh.
This one looks pretty fun, my only knock is copying Hollow Knight a bit to much. It’s quite obvious they bit hard on Hollow Knights style, The healing, the Movement, the loading screen lol even some of the bosses are just HK bosses with there art style slapped on top. I’m all for games taking inspiration from other titles but that can go to far and this one definitely does in places.
The game's visuals and style immediately appealed to me. Unfortunately, I gave up after a few hours. It wasn't because of the enemies or the bosses, but because of the (for me) excessively difficult jumping around. What a pity.
Man, this is gorgeous! Cute and silly turned me off Hollow Knight, but in this one it looks great! I wish it were longer and more non-linear. Still, on the list it goes!
@ZamWeazle Just art-wise, silly, I mean. The juxtaposition of cute cartoons with darkness gives me too big a Tim Burton vibe. I like cute and silly OR dark and broody, not both at once heh.
I'd give it a 5/10, its ruined by the annoying lack of a regular double jump, other than that it's a solid 7 or 8, graphics are definitely a 10, reminds me of okami.
Any game will fill the void tbh. Team Cherry has lost my interest entirely. They have taken way too long with Silksong. Many fans have moved on by now to other metroidvanias that are sharper and will likely be better as well. Take a look at Crowsworn another banger. Essentially Bloodbourne but in 2D.
Sadly Humble Games have been gutted yesterday after the acquisition by IGN (as IGN reports it was just their parent company Ziff Davis that owned humble games and did this so they have no connection at all and aren't the bad guys >_>). It was initially seen as a shut down but now it's "restructuring" in press releases. How true that is remains to be seen.
There's something thats been bugging me for a while with the scoring system you use in reviews: 9 times out of 10 the score of gameplay and controls is the same, they are even presented together at the end of the "gameplay section". It feels pointless to have both. I don't know if I'm just not remembering enough cases where they are different but I think it's something to evaluate, maybe they are just too similar as categories and should be one. You could just separate the actual history/"setting"/theme as a category and merge gameplay+controls.
Its actually not nearly 9 times out of 10 its often different. The numerical values are reference point but the importance comes from what's said, thats really the important part. Mark
