  • It was a day of high drama in the women's draw so Catherine, David and Matt begin by talking about the simultaneous epics that played out on Centre Court. How did Elina Svitolina come back to defeat Victoria Azarenka for the first time? How has she changed as a tennis player since coming back to the tour? What made this one of the best moments of Svitolina's life? What can tennis do about the booing that keeps happening when there's no handshake? And how did Iga Swiatek save match points to beat Belinda Bencic?
    Elsewhere, there's chat about Marketa Vondrousova's win in the Czech-off, Mirra Andreeva's growth since Roland Garros, Jessica Pegula reaching another Grand Slam quarter-final, a stunning shot by Andrey Rublev to help him beat Alexander Bublik, a despondent Frances Tiafoe after his loss to Grigor Dimitrov, injury for Denis Shapovalov, a choke by Hubert Hurkacz in two tiebreaks against Novak Djokovic, and scheduling issues on Centre Court.

    What is sad is that Vika and Elina's match was incredible, like back when WTA had very strong players and matches were just that. Both these players did a lot tonight to bring back attention to women's tennis, as incredibly strong women and mothers, yet at the end of the day all that is discussed is the absence of a handshake....

    They have their anger to the wrong people. We do understand what their country is going through and what they are goring through. Its very painful and heart breaking. But for these player's to be treated like the way it is now not good for the sport. Sport is what bringing people together

    • @zelmoziggy
      @zelmoziggy Год назад +8

      Sport absolutely does NOT bring people together. It's riddled with tribalism. Does baseball bring Red Sox fans and Yankees fans together? Does football bring Alabama and Auburn fans together? In tennis, every Grand Slam tournament gives a disproportionate number of wild cards to its home country's players and puts a disproportionate number of their matches on show courts. Each country's television network covers its own players' matches to the exclusion of better matches between players from other countries. Fans in the stands cheer their own country's players and wave their own country's flag. Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup are competitions between nations.
      Get rid of all tribalism in sport, and maybe it can start bringing people together.

      yes, my take is that in a worse case scenario, more countries may very well be at war with Russia in future. Are we to expect that all players treat the Russian and Belarussian players the way the Ukrainian players are? I'm afraid it's starting a very bad precedent. I used to work in a Russian language school in the US, and I can't imagine treating any of my colleagues this way.

    As much as I enjoy this podcast, I really do wish you would be a bit fairer to Rublev. You know you can talk about him without commenting on the ceiling you think he has every single time you bring him up, though I did appreciate that David commented on the fact that maybe he's the one being unfair when he always says Rublev isn't as good as people think he is. I did love the commentary around that amazing shot though, it was very entertaining!

      @@paulmunster212 Hahaha well I hope that you and David are wrong and Rublev wins! (I am aware that’s me being a bit delusional, but one can always hope!) My comment wasn't to do with the assessment but more so in regards to the fact that every time they (David more so) mention Rublev, they always talk about his "ceiling". For example, even during the Monte Carlo podcast where Rublev won, one of the first things David said was that it doesn’t change his opinion of Rublev and that he’s a player that “we always downward praise…with good reason. He’s somebody I always use the term ceiling to talk about ” Perfectly fine for him to have that opinion, I just wish he wouldn’t bring it up every single time cos it can be a bit tiresome and off-putting. Let’s give Andrey a chance, I mean, it’s not a fluke that he’s been a permanent fixture of the top 10 for such a long time. But yeah, that’s all just wanted to leave a comment in the hopes they see it and could be just a tad bit more positive... or even just slightly less negative haha:)

    When Aryna Sabalenka waits at the net for a handshake, people think she's being intentionally provocative. When Victoria Azarenka doesn't, she gets booed off the court. The media needs to be held accountable for spinning narratives and for continuing to push this controversy further than it ever needed to go. It's unfortunate.

    • @nonameface90

      Orrrr...some players need to acknowledge decision made by other players, 'read the room' and stop trying to be perceived as 'provocative' and then cry wolf (or be silent) to the media? And folks need to be aware of such decisions/announcements and just stop being ignorant?
      I know it's the easiest to blame media first, but the work starts from yourself and your conscience about what's happening. If players/folks watching tennis are intentionally ignorant, little can be done.

They definitely pushed hard, and were only willing to express concern for the position Sabalenka might have put herself in once she put herself in that position. They expected her to take a harder stance, and once she did, then they got worried. Then they read entirely too much into her "choice" to wait at the net. And the first journalist to ask Svitolina about it afterwards flat out asked her if she thought it was deliberate, putting words in her mouth. I have paid very very close attention.

Come on, blaming the media for lack of self-awareness skills of a player?

What's more, she can issue a simple, general statement during press conference that she does not agree with that decision and she will no longer approach for a handshake after matches. Svitolina put forth a great effort and congrats for that. At the same time, I don't know why we have to bring the Ukraine, Belarus thing into this. This is a tennis match, not a war and have had about enough of these Ukrainian players acting as if they are some kind of moral authority. That combined with the media (especially British media) ALWAYS bringing this war up with the players and NEVER accepting their answers. Making some sort of hero out of Elina Svitolina because her country got invaded is beyond absurd! Svitolina, although good today is basically a vanilla player and has really never done anything special. Pointing out that she is a different player because she is more aggressive and less vanilla is good commentary. Acting as though it has anything to do with the war or that the war should be attributed in ANY way to the Russian or Belarusian tennis players is just LUDICROUS!
