  • Today's episode is about a Timber Stand Improvement (TSI) technique known as crop tree release. Crop tree release is a simple strategy as you're simply allowing a fruit-bearing tree (hard or soft mast) more room to grow and produce a healthier mast crop, but the benefits are nearly endless. The results are more sunlight on the forest floor, more acorns on the ground for wildlife, and a healthier individual tree and forest!

On our tree farm we've discovered that a sudden, wide release opening around a mature oak often results in its loss. The tree begins to develop epicormic branching and soon the top begins to fail. Those oldsters have gotten used to their slowly evolving environment over decades and the sudden increase in water, light and wind stress is too much. We've found releasing in stages to be more successful.

Makes sense! A sudden, significant exposure to their environment (more sunlight) could be stressful. I've seen it happen many times before myself.
