  • Join Ethan Tapper, the Chittenden County Forester, and David Paganelli, the Orange County Forester, for a short workshop on managing forests using the “crop tree release” method. Crop tree release is a method for managing forests by concentrating on releasing high-quality and important trees from competition. It is a more efficient way of working in the woods, and also comes with and array of ecological benefits.

Great video Ethan. Do you ever use hack snd squirt methods to release?

Hi there! No, I haven't. Do you use that method in NH?

I just have a wood lot. I spray poplar stumps with Tordon RTU when I cut them near food plots because they stump sprout and I don’t want them popping up into the plots. I’m slowly working on releasing red oaks by cutting but, am wondering if I could get more opened up faster by the hack and squirt method vs girdling or cut and drop.

@@nhmountains5683 Maybe so... What you're describing is similar to girdling, which is always faster and safer than putting trees on the ground. I don't use herbicide on native species myself, but I could see how that might work.
