I have lots of grouse in my land. I accidentally discovered it while deer hunting last year. I had the curiosity to shoot one & cooked it. It was so delicious. Just like chicken. As I write, I hear them drumming around my cabin. I’m located 3 miles north of the Minnesota border. I came across your video presentation & needs to know more about how to keep them on my land. When I was growing up, we had all kinds of grouse around home the turkey population has taken over and killed most of the grouse babies before they even get a chance to live the state of Virginia should’ve stepped in, but now we have no grouse at all shame on you state of Virginia shame on you Greed of money for your turkey license has killed the grouse population.

The Paulonia actually is native to North America. The last of them died out and then the tree was reintroduced. If they try to grow in a forest with very tall trees, they will die out from light starvation. It is like almost all invasive species, they have quite useful properties, but need maintained.

I have heavily wooded steep acreage in WNC and want to manage it for wildlife diversity. If I thin the canopy and create openings how are invasive species controlled like privet and multiflora rose?

Good ideas, except spraying chemicals to poison vegetation and harm wildlife and humans is not good. Think cancer. Manage your woods naturally.

I respect the animals and it’s getting harder to harvest them but I do it. Disagree with having an equal distribution of species in a forest stand. Species composition should directly reflect the landowners objective. I refuse to retain hard maple when managing for deer... 🤷‍♂️

You have touched on an important issue.i will renew my animal control license.and go through some of the farmers losing crops land get permissions.i am 73 and retired from trapping .But I am in a restart mode.

I was intrigued ever since I flushed my first Ruffed Grouse at 12 years old while rabbit hunting with my beagle and Dad. I believe they need to totally close the season for at least a couple years and as far as in Pa. Quit introducing more predators.

How well will the native stuff respond with the canopy opened up but years of pine litter on forest floor? I don't have option of burning, will the sunlight still get good growth on forest floor??

Interesting. I just attended a workshop on making biochar and using adding it to various ferments to make it an amendment to fertilize crops. The person giving the workshop was talking about how this particular tree is being grown in California to make into biochar. It seems it has some special genetics that make it ideal for that purpose. Just goes to show you that invasive is somewhat subjective and depends on what you can do and want to do with it.

I cut Red Maple on my property every winter. They create good winter browse and can be cut up for campfire wood.
