  • This video covers the process I go through when selecting the trees and species that stay and which ones go. This video is an in-depth discussion of Timber selection and how I think of projects in support of goals for the woodlot.

I have 40 acres, it has been untouched since it stopped being farmed 60 years ago…im working with the ncfs to put a plan together, costs $5 an acre…but they have been great…helped me identify all the species of trees on my property…helped me understand thinning, distances…i have a ton of white oak, hickory, red oak, pin oak, water oak, a few walnuts…its a very unhealthy forest, closed canopy…im just wanting to get it healthier for wildlife, nothing commercial…i had to get over the mindset of being worried about cutting out smaller species of higher value like white oak, in order to let larger white oaks to live…

That sounds like a fun project. Seems like you have a great plan in place with a helpful resource. Lots of good species on your place. I also found it very hard cutting down valuable trees (both valuable monetarily and as habitat) but after realizing how much it helps the others flourish, it has helped.

I don't have any Eastern Red Cedar on my property! LOL. Well done, Chet. I wanted to mention that those hickory saplings are great for projects like making poles or tool handles, at least the straight ones.

Yes, everything I cut big enough will be saved back for the sawmill. Smaller stuff for firewood and anything I can't use we will make brush piles with.
