Would you like to know how to hack your kitchen sink soap dispenser to make it more convenient to fill? I have an easy solution that most homeowners wish they did a long time ago. Counter-mounted soap dispensers are an attractive way to keep hand and dish soap conveniently close to the sink. The pump portion of the dispenser is available in many styles and finishes that coordinate with whatever kitchen faucet you currently have. My style choice has clean, modern lines but blends easily with my kitchen decor.
Are you tired of re-filling your built-in soap dispenser?
The soap container that comes with the built-in soap pump is so TINY, you can refill it almost weekly. When I refill my built-in kitchen soap dispenser, I have two choices: I can fill it from the top or fill it from underneath the sink. When I fill it from the top I always make a mess because the stream of soap is difficult to keep centered on the hole. The soap finds its way all over the counter and I have a mess to clean. If I try to use a funnel, I can't see the level of the soap and the soap overflows the container and also makes a mess. If I try to fill it from underneath the sink, I have to pull everything out of the sink cabinet, crawl in and wedge my hand into the tiny space allotted for the container. No choice is ideal - until now!
You will have a seemingly endless supply of soap!
You need a large container of hand or dish soap and about $3.00 worth of materials. If you only do one thing to make life easier in your kitchen, this is the one! No special tools required.

So happy to help out! I love mine. All the best, Renee
If you notice she did say she had to "pump it 50 times" to start the flow. You NEED a check valve from the aquarium store to hold the pressure otherwise the soap will slowly sink down and then you have to pump EACH time 50 times to get it moving.
No Leonard, It was 50 times to get the first bit of soap up to the top. From that point, it's readily available. I have a nice seal in my system. A check valve is not always needed. Maybe if you purchase the wrong size ID/OD tubing.... Renee
I bought the installation kit from Lowe’s and bought the large bottle of Dawn and that’s exactly what happens to mine the soap seeps Back out so the soap is not readily available whenever I go to do dishes
@@ReneeRomeo A check valve is most definitely needed. I don't know why anyone would want to just buy the tube and save pennies. Get the kit with the tube and the check valve and call it a day.
I wonder if you make a zig zag in the tubing almost like a p trap it won't all go back into the bottle and will it affect the suction of the pump?
I have a check valve. I still get air pockets and no soap
Well, this is just brilliant. Wow, I am so impressed. Thank you.
I hope you try it! Thank you so much, Renee

For those who soap is going back into the container - Do this: Buy a Check Valve (cut tubing in the middle and attach the valve) it will prevent the soap from returning to the container.
Just Curious!, Thank you for that! Several people have had issues with the soap as well. I think the tubing isn't the correct diameter. It may be an OD vs. ID issue? Mine has worked fine. All the best, Renee

I thought to get the same size bottle that is attached to the dispenser, thus, the measurement of a liquid would be exact. But you, Renee, have a way better idea than mine, I'm going to use it. Great job. Thank you
Timur, You'll be so happy with this system. I never make a mess anymore and I rarely refill. I'm still trying to figure out how I can get three dispensers to look nice in my counter though: dish soap/hand soap/ hand lotion... a girl can dream! Thanks for the nice note! All the best, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo, just completed the project, works like a charm, thank you one more time. At first, the soap was going down the tube, but I sealed the connection between pump and hose, and now it works as it should, no check valve needed. Be well.
p.s. Just noticed that we have the same design countertops, guess it's most popular )))
@@todivetoday Hi Timur, Yes, I didn't need the check valve either. My guess is that it's an OD versus ID tube dimension. It's so slight but could cause the slipping issue. I'm glad that yours worked as is should. Thank you for sharing. Good choice - I really like my countertops!! All the best, Renee
Nice video, Renee. It's worth noting that there are many soap dispensers that have much smaller holes than those in your video. We had a beautiful Blanco soap dispenser that was apparently made for a much thinner soap mixture than is common in the US. If you have one of these, you'll want to replace it with a dispenser designed with a larger flow or you'll find that it clogs frequently. Sadly, many of the "premium" soap dispensers have this issue. It can be recognized by looking at the output end of the pump. If the hole is just 1/16" in diameter or less, it's likely to clog with conventional dishwashing soaps. The alternative offered by Blanco was to thin the soap before using.
Steve, Excellent point! I imagine that a little water won't affect the cleaning capability of the dish soap either. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure you'll help others with their issues as well. Thank you so much, Renee
I look forward to the day women have re-engineered all of kitchen design.
Buz Off, I love that - me too! I'm currently putting a 2nd dishwasher in our new island. We bought this house a year ago and I’ve just been refilling the little bottle at the sink. Today I looked under the sink and saw a huge mess on the unused bottle of dishwasher detergent at the back of the cupboard. The connection of the little bottle to the sink had come loose and I had quite a mess on my hands. Did you know dish soap will solidify? I will definitely be trying your wonderful method!
Hi Shari Guy, That's an awful mess to clean up! I used to have issues on top of the sink but never underneath. At least it DID solidify because you'd have a mess of bubbles to deal with too. I'm so happy that you're trying this - you're going to be so pleased! All the best to you, Renee
Very impressive! Thank you.
Hi Jessica, Glad to help! I was so frustrated every time I filled my soap. No matter how careful I was, I always made a mess of some sort. Now, my sink is always full of soap and perfect looking. Yours will be too! Thank you so much for the kind words. All the best, Renee
Clever hack! Thanks!
Ray Jackson, I haven't re-filled it yet! Thanks, Renee
Nice! Well, I already have the soap bottles from Costco and will be stopping by my local hardware store for the other materials needed.
It's a quick job!
If you could see under my sink, this is a brilliant idea if you have room under your sink, of which I do not, but for the general folks it is a great idea. To fill those things can be a hassle, but they are convenient. Is that snow I see? WOW, a white Christmas. I envy you but I do not envy the cold or shoveling the snow or driving into snow banks and all that really cold stuff. It is pretty.
Nancy, Can you possibly add a small shelf to suspend the soap container above whatever you have under your sink? I only need to move my small trash can out of the way to get to mine. This is too bad. It works so well and only takes a few seconds to replace an empty container with a full one. I also have a reverse osmosis system for our drinking water that is underneath the sink cabinet but located in the basement. If you have a basement, you could drill through the bottom of the cabinet and then through the floor underneath. The tubes run through the hole and go directly to the filtration system which sits on a sturdy shelf in the basement, just under the sink area. Where there's a will, there's a way! Renee
Thank you for sharing! So smart!

JW Lewis, You're welcome! You'll love it. If you're having a hard time finding the correct ID tube for your system, look for a check valve to insert into the line. Others have commented that their tubing was mis-labeled and it caused their soap not to pump. All the best, Renee

Just wondering if gravity plays a part in your idea? If you go to use the soap in the morning do you find that you have to pump the dispenser 20 or more times to bring the soap back up?
Hi Eddie, Some have complained about this issue and have installed a check valve toward the top of the tubing. Mine flows normally but it may be that there are slightly different sizes for the tubing? Those who have experienced this installed one and it solved their issue. I hope this helps you out too, Renee

Just make sure that the tubing doesn’t make an air tight seal in the opening of the soap bottle. If it does, just put a small hole in the cap to let air in, otherwise the dispenser won’t be able to draw the soap through the tubing.

I've done the exact thing you are demonstrating years ago!! Great minds think alike. Now I want to upgrade to foam hand soap. Do you have any DIY ideas to convert our existing sink dispensers to foam soap dispensers? Thank you.

@@ReneeRomeo Thank you Renee! It would be a great NEW project too because I haven't seen a video for this DIY anywhere. Another option is to find a soap bottle (the one that goes under the sink) that has the foaming mechanism built in it so the top metal pump does not have to be removed. Mine matches my faucet now. Plus, this would work for me too because I don't know if I have the strength to loosen the metal section. But, I'm not picky and I would appreciate any sink liquid to foam conversion ideas that work. Thanks in advance.

My pumper spout broke. Of course, the manufacturers of these soap pumps will not supply just the pump. So now I have to remove the entire system and replace it with a new one. Not easy since it is under and behind the sink where access is limited. Any idea?
Hi Nick, I know what you mean. Do you have a kid in the house with small hands? Usually once you get a few fingers on the container, it will twist off easily. Sorry to hear about it but now you can upgrade to a system that's so much easier to use. All the best with getting that thing out! Renee
@@ReneeRomeo Hi Renee, no small kids. The metal just corroded and wore out. Trying to change than soap dispenser will require dropping the sink and removing the garbage disposal. Never again will I do an under the sink mount soap dispenser.
@@edgetown1 Agreed - unless you start a family of small children - lol. It'd probably be a lot less trouble to drop the sink though. Renee, thanks for this video- it's been a few years and I was wondering how it is holding up. One concern I had was that gravity would slowly let the soap empty out of the tube over time. Do you have this experience with your system? and if so what is your fix? THanks!
Hi Jeffrey, Excellent question! No, I haven't experienced that. If you get the seal correct the first time, the system will remain like a vacuum. Someone said they used a valve check (from an aquarium store) to keep the soap in their tube. Perhaps you could look for that if you can't find the correct tubing size. There is an outside diameter and inside diameter measurement for different tubing. I think his didn't match up well. I hope this helps, Renee

Interesting idea but is it really that hard to pour 15 oz of soap down the top? Find out how much your bottle holds and when it reaches half way fill it backup.. She says you fill it from the top and soap goes everywhere. Not really if you don't pull more than the capacity of the bottle. Open the cabinet take a look use a flashlight if you have to.. But it is a cool idea..
Mr Obvious, I always have a giant refill bottle on hand and since the container is stuck way up high, it's impossible to see how much product to put in. This works much better for me. Renee
We bought a house and it has this amazing hack. loved it till I had to change the soap bottle. The old owner used Dawn (at lease the bottle was) and it worked perfectly. I'm using Dawn as well. However, the soap now slides back down the hose into the bottle, so that you have to reprime every time you use it? And I need to pump it like 1000 times. I can't keep the soap up the hose. It is because it's too thick? Please help.
Evgenka23, I don't think the problem is the soap. Check the connection at the sink. I think there's an air gap there that's affecting the suction in the tube. Make sure that the tubing is inserted really well into the pumper and that it is sealed in place with silicone. I had a friend tell me that he used plumbers tape instead of silicone and he had the same problem. Let me know if this helps! Renee
I will try. Thank you
Were you able to fix it? I’m having the same problem.
Here is a good way to keep the soap from going back down...

@@euniceayala2958 Check out the link. It will help you.
Only one problem…the hand soap goes down the tube because gravity pulls it down…even if you make sure the tubing is tight and no air goes in…so next time you want soap you need to pump 50 times just to get the soap to come out…remember the old trick when you are drinking any liquid with a straw and you cover the top of the straw the liquid doesn’t go down…as soon as you release it all the liquid ends at the bottom…so that is the problem…
Erlpen2016, I think the problem is the incorrect ID of the tubing. Mine doesn't do this. I have soap all the time. Others have resolved this issue with a check valve in their lines. Renee
Be sure to add a Check Valve or you'll be pumping 50 times every time.
I think some of you are having problems getting the correct tubing. It may be that different manufacturers have different specs? Mine didn't need a check valve but others have. Thanks! Renee
Nice video but dont think securing the bottle isn't really necessary.... 😁👌

tried this many years ago only to find the channel thru the dispensers corrode & taint the soap with a nasty rust smell.
bgregg, This happened to me once with a super market dispenser. I think (hope) that the faucet manufacturers use better quality steel for their counter top pumps. It's just an internal spring but stainless steel would be best. I think this cold easily be swapped out and then you won't have any more rust issues. Thanks for the info, Renee
Thanks for the video. I tried it in my kitchen but the pump is not strong enough to suck the liquid up. I was wondering if I can get the brand the would work well with this application. Thanks.
konde888, Before you try to replace the pump, make sure that all of your connections are water-tight. You may have an air gap that requires more silicone. Also, make sure that you depress the pump fully down to get maximum suction. This should fix the problem nicely. If not, a new pump might be in order. The springs get misshapen over time too. All the best, Renee
You may need to place a check valve the size of the tubing, at the top of the tubing to keep the liquid from draining all the way back down to the soap bottle.
Does the soap stay in the tubing after use or does it drift down back into the bottle.
Hi Donna, If yours is drifting back down to the bottle, try re-attaching the dispenser to the tube, making sure that you've used enough silicone sealant. You need a good seal in order for the soap to stay in the tube. All the best, Renee
You have to install what is called a check valve. You can pick this up and any pet store.
@@robertdilone5243 Yes - excellent advice if this doesn't solve the problem. Thanks
@@ReneeRomeo It will keep the soap in the line. So it will not go back down to the container..i
Do you put the check valve near the top of the tube or the bottom?
I am almost complete with this shortcut BUT I cannot get the soap to move up the tubing to be dispensed. The pump will not pump. Any suggestions?
Colleen Edgington, It appears that you don't have a good seal somewhere along the line. Re-check all fittings (especially the silicone) and make sure that they are well-seated and/or completely sealed all the way around. It will take many pumps to get it to counter top level the first time. I have also found that long, slow pumps work better than short, fast ones. Best of luck, Renee
@@ReneeRomeo I think the seal is okay BUT my compression spring was gone, must have popped off some time ago.
@@MissColleen1266 That's the easiest fix! I'm glad that you didn't have to take it all apart to see what was going on. Thanks for letting me know... Enjoy! Renee
Hi Where'd you buy the tubing from?
Binish Ahmad. I bought the tubing from Home Depot. It's in their plumbing isle (the one with replacement parts and hoses). If not there, then I'm sure you can find it online. Thanks for the question, Renee
I tried this exactly as you described and IT DOES NOT WORK! I have a new faucet with the soap dispenser and even wrote to the manufacturer (Moen) and got a new pump. I'm so frustrated at this point, because I was sure your method would work! Any Ideas as to what the problem could be?? Thanks, DEE
dee baird, Three things come to mind: I had a friend that said the exact same thing and he didn't follow my directions exactly. His problem was that he didn't allow the silicone to dry before pumping the soap through. After that, you prime the tube to get the soap all the way to the top (about 50 times) and you're on your way. Make sure that all your connections are well seated, sealed and/or tight too. If the spring in the pump itself is worn out, you may need a new pump. Check all of these and you should solve your issue. Mine is still going strong. All the best, Renee
soap is soap, I wouldn't bother with two, it makes it look cluttered.
But it’s for two sinks
@@uprayup, sorry what? There’s one sink there.

You glued a tube to soap dispenser and called it a hack
nagl, Isn't that what a hack is?! Renee
securing the bottle is so unnecessary
Patricia R., With 3 cats in the house that like to explore under the sink whenever there's a chance, I felt it was necessary. That's a lot of soap to clean up if it tips over. 😃 Renee
@@ReneeRomeo better safe than sorry
