Gord was a great story teller in improvisation, this song is only about 3 to 4 min, this live version tells his story in life in between the song then gets right back into it when he's done with the story. Pure genius I get u bud I get the chills...
I saw this in a small club in Montréal at the beginning of their career. The rant would go on for at least 30mn. This was in the days Downie had long hair and would spit the air..........one of the best shows I ever seen.............it was RAW!!!
My older sister (17 at the time) dragged me to it when I was thirteen! They weren’t going to let us in but she blew the bouncer while I ate Belle Province Poutine in another room 🤣😂🤣! I made sure to tell that one (among a few others 🤣) to her teenage daughters who are always getting in trouble for being a little wild themselves lol!
Not so rare brother...all share your pride in being Hip fans and our love for Gord! Thank you Canada, thank you Kingston, and THANK YOU GORD!! Fuck cancer
Thank The Hip, saw the show on Monday night. Breaks my heart. Their music has gotten me through a few bad patches in my life plus many more good times. Thanks for the memories, boys. And I agree, Fuck Cancer. If it's any consolation, Gord didn't look like he wanted to leave the stage. Too all those who think he was forced to do it... no way. Just watch the videos and you'll get it
The last show in Kingston was absolutely amazing! I'm so happy CBC decided to live stream it on RUclips or I wouldn't have been able to watch. 3 fucking encores!
One of the best songs of all time. ALL TIME. Driving home to Buffalo from Cleveland one night back in '97 I almost blew the speakers out of my rear window at about two thirty one morning when 97.7 Hitz FM played this.
,Highway Girl Live, the song that turned me on to the Hip.Sitting in front of a bonfire by the lake with family and friends rocking with the Hip.Saw them for the first time at the mtl forum in feb of 95,bitterly cold at the time, place was packed! Thanks for all the great music and memories that will never fade away.
I remember sitting in a park with my wife and dog on July 1 in Charlottetown listening to The Hip play a concert...Canada Day in the city where Canada became a nation with The Hip. Sadly, my wife just died of same glioblastoma that claimed Gordy. She was even being treated in Kingston.
I remember when this was released as a radio single Early nineties Couldn t buy it then Anywhere But heard it everywhere So subversive So cool so good The hip became Canadian gods At that point P$ Hope yer drunk and singing in heaven With the angels Gordie Thanks for it all Everything All of it
I just played the original studio version and then the "rant" version. Wow, the band is soooo much tighter and Gordie is so set FREE, just whalin' it !! RIP Gordie, and I wish Ry Cooder could've delivered your eulogy.
It's so unfortunate such an incredible story teller and artist from Canada got cancer. He is such an amazing artist. Can't wait to see him one last time.
Thank You!! That was a MIND-BLOWING Experience that I Gaurantee will B played Many More Times!! They REALLY Kicked Ass at their live shows. I only ever saw them play outdoors - Which was Fantastic, but sometimes I wish I had Seen them INSIDE at least once!! This was SO GOOD!!
Allen Cross played this on his show “the ongoing history of new music” back when I was in college. I recorded the whole thing and it was the first time I had heard this version. By the end of the following summer all my friends had made recordings off of my tape, or other friends tapes. Man you could barely make out the song it had degraded so bad but we played the hell out of it.
Alan Cross, my fav all-around music guy since 1985 (CFNY- the Spirit of Radio) ! The station was unique, and sponsored Canada Day festival events - Molson Park in Barrie. Amazing as The Hip played with a list of 10 or so CDN bands (1990 ?) and a few other years to follow. The BEST times 🎶🤘🏻...still listening to Alan 💯🙌🏻
@@kelleyb.4072 oh ya! Loved the roadside attractions.... went to many of them. I flew back home to see them when they played in Caygeon and it was like a roadside reunion. Good times.

@sinabuen Thanks man. BTW, GREAT lyrics. My favorite, to say the least. Still, after ALL THESE YEARS, they're still my favorite band, and most likely, my favorite song. Lots of personal memories associated with it, of course, as all memories are, but damn, great, great song Thanks, 97.7 Hits FM for broadcasting as far as Buffalo.
Night After night I find myself getting lost in these uploads ... over and over... remembering........ and I think what now? I'm still stunned and grieving. 21 times I saw them from Misty Moon to Seattle and every where in between... FUCKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!

I've been Stateside too long - I only just today learned that Gordie died, and he died the same way my sister did :( Doubly sad now, but at least we got this song! And killerwhaletank! I'll be jamming Road Apples on the way home, and watch all these Cali-ites look at me like WTF is that? :)
I love Tragically Hip, but this song tho 🥰🥰🥰 its my absolute favorite song. Every time I hear him sing the memories of working his shows tho 😓😓 Fuck I miss gord
Great live-version, I have this song (apart from the official version of course) too, on a radio-taping of the Hip's Dutch debut at Amsterdam's Melkweg (Milkyway), 1990 if I'm correct ;-)
have known these awesome fuckers since they came ou to the 'Peg. remember you thrashing in your youth and your awesome sense of shit man. this song is the best ever written. u should see them perform it. Mel
@chuck555 Thanks for the correction; in addition, I now know where they produced their inception video of "Small Town Bringdown" from. Footage from the city of Kingston and outlying land parcels. That 1987, first CD release was a premonition of future marvelous compositions to be achieved !
Would love to know when this was recorded. Neat to hear some of the lyrics from Locked in the Trunk of a Car thrown in to the rant section. Makes me wonder if it was before Fully Completely came out, and if these were lyrics Gord had been working on at the time. Either way, a great version of a great song!
I think it was recorded sometime in 1991 so the year before Fully Completely was released. Gord also performed parts of Nautical Disaster before it was recorded.
From what I can google, it seems it was in 1991, so the timing fits. It's also got lyrics from a couple of other Fully Completely songs in it - At the 100th Meridian and Looking for a Place to Happen
@42MOL4EVER I get where you're coming from.. the doors and the hip are my two fav bands of all time. Although they're very different stylistically .. they both hit the same nerve for me.
When the rhythm sections kicks back in after the rant I get chills. Every. Single. Time.

Doesn’t get any better than that.

Couldn't agree more. I was thinking the other day: it doesn't even seem LIKE Canada anymore without the Tragically Hip.

I think they are at the peak of their popularity right now. A few weeks back they had all 14! of their albums in the Billboard top 100!
+Metropolis Noir I'm not sure if any of their albums have ever broken the top 200 in the US. Maybe Now for Plan A & Man Machine Poem
Remember driving My 5 ton truck 🚛 to New York. Played this non stop there and back. Thank you Gordie. RIP 🙏
This was a staple on many awesome road trips through the many mountains of British Columbia. Miss you Gord!
DIG Gord's rants! "That's my story & I'm stickin' to it..."
This was one of the first Hip songs I ever heard and I've been hooked ever since. We're behind you 1,000,000% Gordo. Peace brother.

Yeah, definitely one of the best live shows I've ever seen, 5 times in Winnipeg! Gord was a poetic genius! His "rants" we're the greatest!!
Gord is a genuis poet.

Best Canadian band ever!
My fave Hip song...saw them in London Ontario in 89...fell in love.

The best part of this is that Gord's rant shows up in the lyrics of Locked in the Trunk of a Car off Fully Completly. Awesom
Another great song. Thank you. Always loved this rendition.
"Are you reall the Messiah?"
"Yes I am."
Yes I am
