When I lived in Long Island, the rule was “ when the forsythia blooms, throw down”
Here in central Illinois, I’m throwing down today after I mow. Rain is expected in two days, today is the day, pre emergent goes down. I’m using liquid aeration, it’s awesome in the fall. Winter fert in late November. Halloween I’m throwing down Double Dark to darken up my lawn .

    • @GarageGear

Hey Bobby! I would agree you don’t want to screw up the worm castings but after a few weeks they are broken down and into the soil. So fertilizer is good between uses of castings. I alternate them with no issues. Weed killer should only be spot sprayed if necessary Where the weeds are. 👍

Northern climates don't need fertilizer now if you did your winterizing feeding last fall. Ever notice that your lawn and most everyone else's looks nice and green in the spring? Cornell states that most lawns only need feeding once a year in the fall.
The rest is hype by the fertilizer companies, home centers and lawn services; all looking to take more of your money.

Fall is the most important, but if you really want a nice lawn, you need more than that. That said, you can have a decent, healthy lawn just fertilizing in the fall, but it won't look like a golf course, which is what a lot of people want. I personally do a few light apps in the spring, and leave it alone in the summer, then hit it with at least one heavy app in the fall, maybe two if the weather cooperates. I also mulch all clippings and mulch all of my leaves in the fall, and I believe that has benefitted my lawn the most, but it takes about 5 years of doing this consistently to start noticing a difference, but well worth it.

Hey mexi’ lots to unpack here! First liquid absorbs faster and is more cost effective for a bigger yard. No need to wait longer for any reason. A good rule of thumb is fertilize every 6-8 weeks. The 16-4-8 is a well rounded fertilizer. The 32-4-8 is going to push crazy top growth and you’ll be mowing every 2-3 days. @@inter18 you could do whatever you want. Your lawn will green up every time you fertilize. If you want to consistently keep the lawn green this is a good step by step plan. If you only do this a couple of times your lawn will green up, then fade a little, maybe you’ll see some weeds pop up, then it will green up again, then fade and so on. How big is your lawn?

Is it alright to use now June 4th. The Jonathan green green up fertilizer. It's 29/0/3. I used Jonathan green fertilizer for seeding and sod 4/5 weeks ago and parts of my lawn or not lush green. Please advise. I do intend to use summer survival fertilizer in about 5 weeks but I want to use something to green up my lawn. I have a sprinkler system so no issues with watering. Much appreciated for your guidance

Or go with fertilizer for seeding and sod again. That is 12/18/8. Much appreciated

@@brodygoalie hey Brody, I would go with the 12/18/8 fert. We have a few more weeks before temps start to spike and you’ll want some phosphorus to help drive some root growth prior to summer setting in. Use that water a lot and you should be just fine! Both fertilizers would help green up the lawn with a decent amount of nitrogen! Thanks for watching my friend!

@@GarageGear hi. I ended up using the high nitrogen fertilizer. I applied last night. So in 6 weeks I will use the summer survival fertilizer. So like third week of July for that. Then 6 weeks from third week of July would be beginning of September. I will overseed and aeration so I will have use the fertilizer for seeding and sod. Then late October will use the fall fertilizer from Jonathan green. How does that plan seem to you? Much appreciated for your help. Regards
