Man, I remember in the 80's this song 'Conga' was playing EVERYWHERE from Miami to South Asia and beyond... Gloria Estefan brought the sound of Cuba to the world and became a superstar w/ songs like 'Rhythm is gonna get you'... "1,2,3" ... "Don't wanna lose you" ... 'Anything for you'... 'Turn the beat around'... 🔥🔥 Gloria was discovered by her husband Emilio Estefan... she became the lead singer in his band Miami Sound Machine... They are one of the few famous couples who have stayed married & together...
First of all, let me say both my husband and I love your show! I believe this is the first time I actually post a comment. I am Cuban, born in the island but for obvious reasons left in 1962 at the age of 4. One thing I can tell you about Cubans is besides the fact that we are loud, among other things, is that we have music and dance in out soul. It is part of who we are. Our music is a mix of Spanish melody, and the vibrant African beats and drumming. Conga was derived from the Cuban carnival dance of the same name. The dancers form a long, processing line, which would usually turn into a circle. The basic dance steps start from left leg 1-2-3 kick then repeat, opposite. I guarantee you that if you go to a Cuban party, and at some point, you’ll end up in a conga line. Gloria and Emilio Estefan, both Cuban immigrants to this great country are one of those wonderful success stories of two hard working people pursuing the American dream. They have become one of the most powerful couples in the music industry. Miami Sound Machine went through many transitions, started out as The Miami Latin Boys, Gloria joined, and Miami Sound Machine was born. Oh, of course, they fall in love and get married... After years being successful in the Latin American market, Gloria and Emilio with the input of some of their band members come up with this idea of imparting part of our Cuban flavor to pop music. A new record is released using this concept in which this song Conga is included, and the rest is history. Their biggest accomplishments however, are their son Nayib, producer and director and their daughter Emily a very talented singer, musician and producer. I am including a link to a performance she did honoring her parents at The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize several years ago. ruclips.net/video/djLJA7cAvt0/видео.html
They were one of the bands playing during closing ceremonies for the '96 Olympics in Atlanta. I was a volunteer usher in Olympic Stadium, and during the rehearsal that afternoon, several of us were standing by one of the tunnels where all the mini-stages on wheels were bringing in the performers & got to see her up close. She was so friendly! She's a really cool person who's done a lot with her money and fame to help others.
In 1986 they performed at Steamboat Days in Burlington, IA, which was about an hour and a half drive from where we live. Wife and I went with another couple and were in the crowd. They are famous for their Conga line dance while performing this song. During this show, Guiness Book of Records people were there and Officially confirmed the the Conga line at that show "was the official Record conga line " with just over 11,000 people doing the Conga at one time. Gloria led the line through the crowd and at one time passed within about 3 feet of where we stood. WHAT A MEMORY "Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, who will perform tonight before a sold out house at the State Theatre in Easton, have been at the head of quite a few conga lines in their time, but never like the one they led at Burlington, Iowa.
For a young white farm boy in Kentucky, this was probably my first introduction to Latin music....and I loved it. I know I bought at least one album or two of Miami Sound Machine as a kid. I also loved their song The Rhythm is Gonna Get You. This group is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥.
This was the first of many wonderful hits for Gloria and her husband. They are like royalty in S. Florida. Right now she can be seen on TV in the new version of Father of the Bride.
I lived in Miami, Florida when this song came out!! Loved this and it was hot in the clubs!! So many different sounds and so many clubs!!! Good times!!!!!! My college life was great!!!!! Stayed there for 15 years ! Moved after Hurricane Andrew due to losing our home and business. Still miss the place!
Did you get to stick around for her concert/Hurricane Andrew fundraiser at Joe Robbie Stadium in 1992? It was spectacular. Especially when the Bee Gees came on stage. The whole stadium was dancing in their seats for their entire set. I'm still here...60 years, but just north in West Palm.
Me too! I loved her and Expose, both of whom I saw live back in the 80s! Living in Miami back then, watching Miami Vice filmed too - what an amazing time! I am sorry to hear that you lost so much during Andrew! We were lucky - our house was okay (without power for a bit; my cousin was out of power for a lONG time). My dad did get very sick from the debris and crap in the air afterward and was in the hospital at Jackson Memorial for nearly a month and they couldn't do anything until they figured it out. He couldn't eat, was losing such weight and was just stuck in the hospital. :-(
Just love watching Lex react to music ! .. She has the joy of life in her soul, and it makes her body move in the most beautiful and fun ways .. Plus, her face just lights up when she's happy, and she makes those adorable sounds, squealing and laughing with delight .. Absolutely a pleasure to behold !
@@paulkane7771 Cardboard cut-outs are actually more animated than Brad 😅 .. He does have some occasional moments where he seems to feel the groove of the music .. but they're few and far between .. He and Lex are total opposites in that regard.
I love Lex’s reactions and commentary, she really feels the music. If it was just her, I would watch this channel a lot more. Brad is a buzzkill, for me. I hate to say. They seem like a nice couple and are attractive.
I first heard Gloria do it live and assumed it was her song later i found out it was a cover. When it comes to Gloria's studio version i agree the orginal is much better but when she did it live with a full band lots of percussion and big horn section it's a completely different thing.
You can't help but Salsa when you hear it - I'm shaking my hips as I type. 💃If you both haven't danced the Salsa, I'd love to see you both dancing the Salsa in a Vlog. Come on Brad and Lex take/join a Salsa class.
Senior year 1986! This song was played the first night in the club on our Senior Cruise. No drinking age at sea...we had a crazy conga line going. My God, what fun memories of youth!
I lived there from 1985-2016. Yes Gloria and Emilio have a restaurant, "Mangos" on Miami Beach. Go to eat and enjoy the music of the islands and dance.
Did the conga at Universal Stuidos so fun , great song and great fun Brad just feel the beat of the music and move to it , have fun with it, just find the beat and move with it
When this album was released my mom wore it out listening to it so much. It was in the cassette player anytime she cleaned, drove, had people over, whatever. It was such a wonderful sound back in the day
YES Miami Sound Machine was huge in Miami back in the 80's, you should also check out Yaz with the song "Situation" that was in the nightclubs in the early 80's and/or also check out The Beat Club with their song "Security" in the late 80's. That was Miami music ...
Gloria Estefan & MSM songs...Wow, they sure bring it!...That piano in the middle was seismic! Some others, "Get On Your Feet" "1, 2, 3" "Words Get In the Way"(a gorgeous ballad) "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" "Bad Boys"(Make Me Feel So Good), "You'll Be Mine" (more)
Great reaction, great song! I love Brad's question, "do you have any instructions that are not metaphors?"..Lol. Too funny! Don't let it deter you though, Lex. Keep being you.
thank you. been waiting for y'all to react to this song. :) happy y'all enjoyed it. and yes this old dog lived in Miami in the 80s. even seen The Miami Sound Machine before they became a US billboard top 40 hit. most of their music were and are hits in Latin America. the majority of their music is in Spanish. but that still did not stop me from enjoying the music parts. yes lived in Miami and can only speak and understand a hand full of words in Spanish. but thats on me. no Miami is not the same look as it was in the 80s. then Miami only had one real skyscraper at the time, now there are dozens in the downtown area. if you want to see how the Miami skyline has changed, you can see it the old "Flipper" tv show, from time to time , that was filmed at the Miami Seaquarium. not a skyline you could see from miles out at sea as you can now. the tallest building before is what is now called "The Freedom Tower."
This song was popular in Canada too where we need a tropical infusion once in awhile. I do recall it being playef a lot and people doing the conga line on the dance floor

Emilio fainted upon learning his wife's suspicions were confirmed: Her back was indeed broken.
