I bought the TRD Pro Skid Plate from my local dealer in Jackson MS to install on a 2024 TRD ORP Premium. The bolts that came with it, along with the pre-installed spacers went on with no problem. No issues. I used the bolts supplied with the Skid plate. I did not use the bolts I removed from the old black steel TRD ORP skid plate. Easy as pie. No issues. A little anti seize on the bolts and torqued to 22 ft-lbs. Perfect.

That Motivix filter tool is the best one made for the Toyota’s. It’s forged unlike the other stamped models. I’ve got it for my sienna and also got there threaded funnel that threads into the oil cap threading so no more funnels falling over when pouring.

Howdy from Palouse, WA! Great video! I have a 2019 SR5 4Runner and ran out of the free dealer oil changes. Took it back to them for the last oil change in January and they charged me $106 and didn't even top off fluids, or vacuum, or any of the other perks normal oil change places do. So, got in my OEM filter cartridge and Mobil 1 this week and started looking at videos. Yours is the best and I will be ordering the new metal housing and tool.

Hey DrJWR1… I just completed it in about an hour. My driveway is pitched so I was able to drive up on ramps until it was level. That skid would have been a “pita” if I hadn’t created space under the front. That had to have been your issue. My torque wrench crapped out, so I simply marked the filter housing and put it right back to that point. It actually stopped right there when I tightened it. Put just shy of 6.5 quarts of pennzoil platinum in it to account for any residual. That frigin dipstick is difficult to read, so I dragged my fingers down it until they were wet. No leaks, so all is well.

Finally got my metal filter housing in from Japan and changed the oil today. Used my new Motiv filter tool, and it worked great! But, I did use Mobil 1 in 5w-20, which is a tiny bit higher viscosity, but in the summer, it makes me feel better. Fun Fact: 4Runners sold in Puerto Rico use 10w-30.

@@JasonExplainsThings I drive a ‘17 Honda Civic…obviously a much different vehicle than a 4-Runner. But I used the Kirkland synthetic 0W - 20 for a 7K mile oci. Sent a sample off to Blackstone Labs, and the report came back with flying colors - low wear metals and additive package still intact. They said I COULD extend it out to 10K miles, but I’ll stick with 7K. 👍🏼

Metal filter housing for the oil filter is a must and it should be upgraded. Now, 5th Gen 4runners sold in Puerto Rico still use 0W-20. I also live in Puerto Rico and I would be very skeptical of permanently changing the weight of the oil on this engine. Now, we will never experience a 32⁰F or colder weather in Puerto Rico but Toyota prefers the 0W and suggests the usage of 5W as an alternative in case there is no 0W available and Toyota also recommends switching back to the 0W when it's immediately available. Toyota designed this motor and they know whats good for it. At least I will not deviate from their instructions, unless a Toyota TB is sent out and mandates this change for us in Puerto Rico.

Your video about the TRD skid plate saved me time and problems as I could not figure out why the brand new TRD bolt kit would only screw in about 1/4 way and then get very tight. After seeing your video, I tapped the threads and no problem! FYI when tapping all 4 holes metal was being cut which tells me the threads are not cut all the way through for 10 x 1.25 bolt. Thank you.

Good video....but not the "best". I would add the torque spec for the filter housing (18 ft lbs) and the torque spec for the filter housing drain plug (10 ft lbs). Also, PLEASE PEOPLE don't use a tap to install the TRD skid plate! The threads are there, they're just filled with gunk from manufacturing. If you're a gun owner, use a bore brush (I used a .38 special bore brush) and some gun solvent and run it through the holes where the aft bolts go a few times to get the threads good and clean. Now the bolts will go in like butter, I guarantee it. For the love of all things holy don't go tapping new threads in your brand new truck! Also, you overfilled the oil. Your dipstick is showing that you are in the "excessive" area (ref: pg, 410 of 2021 4Runner Owner's Manual). Lastly, the plastic filter housing is totally fine, especially when using the latest version of the Motivx tool that doesn't even touch the tabs. Sorry for busting your chops a little but people need to know the correct way to do maintenance, not the RUclips way.

So I need to try to avoid having tool "bloat" by sticking to only the minimum needed tools. I have a storage room but I just can't store a large variety of tools. I ran into a snag I wonder if anybody else has observed: the tabs for the hanger for the front skid plate. The driver’s side came off the frame just fine, I never could get the passenger’s side to let go and I couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t letting go. Great video! I actually didn't know that you must extend the tapping in order to install a TRD skidplate. It might be good to explain that the part number for the oil cap housing does not indicate that it fits the 5th Gen 4Runner. The reason for that is because of the center tube that you must exchange with your plastic housing. Other than that, it's the same.

Great video, thank you , doing it yourself is always best. For the first oil change, I recommend 1000 miles if you plan to keep you 4Runner forever. After that I do mine every 3500 miles, changing the filter every other oil change up to 25K miles after that I change the oil every 4-5K miles. Oil is cheap and this will extend the life of your motor exponentially. I NEVER leave the oil fill cap off while I am working on the truck, debris or something larger could fall inside the motor, especially if you have other people or children around. Just loosen the cap to allow the oil to drain out. Ideally, you want the car to be as level as possible so jacking up only the front of the vehicle may leave some old oil in the pan. For the first few oil changes I went all out and purchased genuine Toyota oil at my local dealer. I always fee great knowing I have new oil in my engine!

I'm confused. I haven't done an oil change myself for a couple decades but when did we go from the canister filters to this style? This seems so much more work and it doesn't save me any money on my bill when I pay to have it done. It seems cheaper with just replacing the paper portion but the added labor I guess offsets it. I just bought a 2022 3 days ago. I'll have to run outside after work and see what I'm dealing with.

Definitely. Like I said in the video... do oil changes at 5K! The 10K thing is more of a marketing gimmick (low cost of ownership) and more about the engine lasting through the warranty.

I know there are more expensive options out there so I wanted to let you know that when I did my first oil and filter change on my 4Runner this weekend, I didn't realize that my oil filter wrenches were too big and wouldn't work. There was a breif panic as this was a weekend and I thought I'd need some special service tool but I tried the local Auto Zone. Not only did the have a wrench but they also had the metal filter housing so I got both...for $33.11 with tax. Don't spend the $25 plus on the MotivX(?) wrench. The $7 Auto Zone wrench is fine. $33.11 FOR BOTH!
